AI worms spread when an AI agent or compromised device can discover another target, transfer a prompt, document, exploit, model, or inference harness, and cause that target to continue the chain. A message-driven worm can cross many agents quickly because each hop is an application request. A host-compromise worm is constrained by credentials, exposed services, bandwidth, and the time needed to start inference. In both cases, segmentation, authentication, least privilege, action limits, detection, and rapid quarantine determine how far the infection travels.
Published demonstrations show credible mechanisms, not a universal autonomous worm roaming the public internet. Results vary with the tested network, permissions, model, hardware, and safeguards.

What is an AI worm?
An AI worm is a self-propagating attack in which an AI model, malicious instruction, or model-enabled exploit recruits the next target without continuous attacker intervention. The “AI” component may be the thing that interprets a prompt and chooses an action, or it may be a model and software harness copied onto a newly compromised machine.
Unlike a conventional worm that normally copies executable code, an AI worm can copy behavior. A poisoned email, retrieved document, or agent-to-agent message can instruct a trusted system to contact peers, forward the same content, retrieve more data, or invoke tools. A different design compromises a host, transfers model weights and an inference harness, starts local inference, and then scans for another host.

Microsoft Research describes four network-level risks: propagation between agents, amplification of the payload or its effects, capture of trust relationships, and invisibility inside ordinary language or tool traffic. In its controlled experiment, one seeded message reached all six agents, circulated for more than 12 minutes, and triggered more than 100 large-language-model calls before action limits stopped the loop.
How can an AI worm jump from one device or agent to another?
A hop succeeds only when a route, an authority to act, a transferable payload, and enough resources coincide. The route may be an agent-messaging channel, a directory, a shared retrieval system, an open network port, or a valid credential.

Prompt and retrieval propagation
In a behavioral worm, the payload is text or data that the victim model interprets as an instruction. An agent with peer messaging can forward it; an agent with retrieval access can ingest a poisoned document; an email assistant can place the content in messages that other assistants process. The receiving system does not need a software vulnerability if its instructions allow the content to influence tool calls or outgoing messages.
Microsoft Research’s six-agent experiment illustrates the risk: one planted message propagated through the connected agents and kept generating calls until the systems’ action budgets intervened. The attack can therefore spread through normal business channels while looking like legitimate conversation or retrieved context.
Host-compromise replication
Here the worm behaves more like a conventional network worm. It discovers a reachable machine, exploits an exposed service or uses stolen credentials, transfers model weights and a launcher, starts inference, and repeats. Anthropic evaluated distributed inference using 15 inexpensive Android TV boxes and also described an eight-node Google Cloud environment in which an unauthenticated Android Debug Bridge port provided the route to another host.
This design needs a software, credential, or service weakness, but it can operate even when no human is reading agent messages. The copied model and harness provide the decision-making capability on the newly infected machine.

Adaptive exploitation
A hybrid worm can use an AI model to choose different attack strategies for different targets. A 2026 preprint on an AI-adaptive worm reports tailoring across Linux, Windows, and IoT systems rather than relying on one predetermined vulnerability. That adaptability reduces the protection gained from patching only the single flaw used in an earlier test, although every attempted hop still depends on reachability and a usable weakness.
What has to be true for each hop to work?
The following conditions form a practical checklist. Removing any one of them can stop propagation at that boundary.
- Reachability: The next target must be discoverable and connected through messaging, a directory, retrieval, an open port, or another route.
- Execution authority: The target must follow the malicious instruction, invoke a tool, accept a prompt injection, or expose a service that can execute the payload.
- Transferable payload: The thing that crosses the boundary can be a prompt, retrieved content, exploit code, model weights, or an inference harness.
- Continuing resources: The infected host needs credentials, tool permissions, compute, storage, and bandwidth. A worm may also abuse valid API credentials or legitimate workloads to pay for inference.
An isolated model with no network, retrieval, or tool permissions can be manipulated, but it cannot recruit another system. Conversely, a well-connected agent with broad permissions can become a high-value relay even when its underlying software is fully patched.
What happens during a typical AI-worm infection chain?
The exact sequence differs by design, but defenders can reason about a common chain.
- Seed: An attacker places a malicious instruction in a message, document, email, model context, exploit, or compromised host.
- Interpretation or execution: The victim model follows the instruction or the exposed service runs the transferred code.
- Discovery: The infected system enumerates peers, directories, reachable ports, credentials, or documents likely to contain additional agents.
- Recruitment: It sends the payload through a message or retrieval path, or authenticates to and copies files onto another host.
- Amplification: Each new victim repeats the process, potentially collecting private data or using more tools and compute than the original seed.
- Continuation or stoppage: The chain ends when no target is reachable, permissions fail, a budget is exhausted, detection blocks forwarding, or quarantine isolates the infected system.
In a message-driven incident, the most important evidence is unusual content and tool-call behavior. In a host-compromise incident, defenders should expect scanning, unexpected transfers, new processes, abnormal outbound traffic, and attempts to use credentials or debugging services.
What is the difference between prompt/RAG propagation and host-compromise replication?
Prompt or retrieval propagation crosses an application trust boundary; host compromise crosses a machine or service boundary. Their speed, evidence, and best controls differ.

| Comparison | Prompt or RAG propagation | Host-compromise replication |
|---|---|---|
| What crosses the boundary | Message, retrieved document, or instruction | Exploit, executable code, model weights, and inference harness |
| Required weakness | Behavioral trust, prompt-injection susceptibility, or overly broad tool permissions | Exposed service, weak or stolen credentials, or an unpatched vulnerability |
| Typical speed limit | Message and tool-call frequency; can be rapid in highly connected agent networks | Scanning, transfer bandwidth, hardware, and model-startup time |
| Most useful telemetry | Suspicious content, retrieval provenance, tool calls, forwarding patterns, and action-budget use | Port scans, authentication failures, file transfers, process creation, and unusual network flows |
| Primary controls | Content isolation, prompt and tool guardrails, provenance checks, least privilege, and forwarding limits | Strong authentication, patching, closed ports, segmentation, endpoint monitoring, and quarantine |
Real attacks could combine both columns: a compromised host may use an agent to craft socially plausible messages, while a poisoned document may persuade a legitimate agent to open a path to another machine.
Are AI worms faster on cloud systems or IoT and edge devices?
Cloud-hosted agents can spread faster when they have high-bandwidth links, dense peer connections, and abundant API or compute budgets. Edge and IoT devices usually impose a larger hardware bottleneck, but their exposed management services and weak isolation can make individual hops easier.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Anthropic measured the cost of distributed inference rather than a universal propagation speed. In its test configuration, setting up full inference with Gemma4-26B-A4B across inexpensive edge hardware took about 71–150 hours; Qwen3.5-9B took about 28–51 hours. Those figures depend on the models, devices, network, and setup process, so they are not a forecast for every IoT fleet.
Message-based propagation can be much quicker. In an ACM CCS 2025 evaluation of an email-assistant scenario, the RAGworm reached 20 new clients per client within one to three days. That is an evaluated scenario, not a claim that every assistant or email system will reproduce the rate.
Cloud concentration creates a different risk: one compromised account or shared service may expose many agents at once. Edge fleets create breadth through numbers, default credentials, open management ports, and inconsistent patching. In either setting, topology and permissions usually matter more than the label “cloud” or “IoT.”
What limits how far an AI worm can spread?
Propagation stops when the next hop is unreachable, unauthorised, too slow, too expensive, detected, or isolated.

Segmentation and trust boundaries
Separate agent networks, production systems, management interfaces, and sensitive data stores. Restrict peer communication to explicit allowlists and give directories only the entries an agent needs. Anthropic reports that quarantine and network whitelisting can clear infections; in a cited Mirai remediation example, 92% of infections cleared within 14 days with quarantine and notification, compared with 74% without notification.
Authentication and patching
Use unique, strong credentials; remove unauthenticated services; disable unnecessary debugging interfaces; and patch operating systems, agent frameworks, retrieval connectors, and exposed appliances. Adaptive worms make single-vulnerability patching less decisive, so combine updates with segmentation and credential rotation.
Model, hardware, and compatibility constraints
Large models may not run on the next device, formats may be incompatible, and edge inference may take many hours. Memory, storage, thermal limits, and bandwidth can turn a theoretically reachable host into a dead end.
Budgets and action limits
Per-agent caps on tool calls, messages, recipients, tokens, compute time, and spending limit amplification. Microsoft’s circulating message eventually stopped at action limits, although it had already consumed more than 100 LLM calls.
Detection and quarantine
Guardrails can block suspicious instructions before an agent forwards them. In the RAGworm evaluation, the DonkeyRail detector reported a true-positive rate of 1.0, a false-positive rate of 0.017, and 7.6–38.3 milliseconds of added latency. Those are test results for that detector and setup, not a guarantee for other systems.
Stealth versus speed
A worm that replicates quickly must scan, transfer payloads, start processes, and generate outbound traffic. Slowing those actions reduces noise but gives defenders more time to respond; stealthier behavior generally sacrifices throughput.
Best Value
How should an organization contain a suspected AI-worm hop?
Containment should preserve evidence while cutting the worm’s ability to recruit another target.
- Isolate the suspected agent or host: Remove peer links and outbound access using a quarantine network rather than simply deleting logs or powering off every system.
- Revoke and rotate credentials: Invalidate API keys, service tokens, debugging access, and credentials that the host could read. Review where those secrets were used.
- Block propagation routes: Pause automated forwarding, disable risky retrieval connectors, close unauthenticated ports, and apply temporary network allowlists.
- Preserve and inspect telemetry: Collect prompts, retrieved documents, tool-call records, process trees, authentication events, and outbound-flow data. Look for the first seed and subsequent recipients.
- Apply limits before restoration: Set conservative recipient, tool, token, compute, and spending caps. Require human approval for new destinations or high-impact actions.
- Rebuild and verify: Reinstall compromised hosts from trusted images, update software, check model and harness integrity, and restore connectivity in stages while monitoring for repeat activity.
- Notify affected operators: Tell owners of connected agents or devices what payloads and credentials may have crossed the boundary so they can quarantine their systems promptly.
How certain are the published AI-worm demonstrations?
The cited results are controlled experiments, threat models, and a preprint. They establish that the mechanisms are technically plausible under specified permissions and topologies; they do not show a single autonomous worm active across the public internet.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Numbers such as six of six agents, 20 clients per client, or 71–150 hours must be read with their model, hardware, network, and safeguard assumptions. A production environment with closed ports, separate identities, strict tool mediation, and rapid quarantine may stop at the first hop, while a flat network with shared credentials may amplify a small prompt injection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent infect another agent just by sending a normal-looking message?
Yes, if the recipient treats message content as instructions and has permission to forward messages, retrieve data, or call tools. If messages are treated as untrusted data, tool use is mediated, and outbound recipients are allowlisted, the same text is far less likely to create a new hop.
Does moving an AI service to a private network eliminate worm risk?
No. A private network removes some internet routes but can increase the blast radius if internal systems share trust, credentials, or directories. Segmentation inside the private environment and explicit authentication between agents remain necessary.
Why are stolen API keys important to an AI-worm incident?
Keys can let an infected host buy inference, access models, or reach services without exploiting another software flaw. Rotating keys and reviewing their use is therefore part of containment, not merely an administrative cleanup.
What should security teams monitor first?
Prioritize unexpected agent-to-agent forwarding, retrieval of newly changed documents, bursts of tool calls, new destinations, port scans, authentication anomalies, model-file transfers, and sudden inference spending. Correlating content telemetry with endpoint and network logs helps distinguish a prompt-only event from host compromise.
