AI wearables do not all listen in the same way. A device might wait for a wake phrase, activate after a button or touch, or keep its microphone ready briefly after a request. Speech may be processed on the device, sent to a cloud service, or handled by a combination of the two. What happens to audio and transcripts afterward—and whether anyone can review them—depends on the specific product, feature, settings, and policy.

The practical question is not simply “Is it listening?” It is what triggers the microphone, what is captured, where speech is processed, what is retained, and what controls you have. Here is how to distinguish those stages and assess the privacy claims without assuming one wearable represents them all.

What does “listening” mean on an AI wearable?

“Listening” can describe several different states, not just an ongoing recording. A microphone may be monitoring for a wake phrase, ready to respond to a physical interaction, briefly available after a request, or actively capturing speech for a specific interaction. Those states have different implications for what can be picked up and when.

  • Wake-phrase monitoring: The device listens for a sound pattern that may signal a request. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that voice assistants can mishear a wake word and activate unexpectedly. Monitoring for a trigger should not automatically be equated with saving every surrounding conversation as an audio file.
  • Button- or touch-triggered use: A physical or touch control can initiate an interaction instead of a spoken wake phrase. The available documentation here does not establish that every wearable offers this option, or how its microphone behaves before and after activation.
  • A follow-up window: Some systems keep the microphone ready for a short time after answering so the wearer can make another request without repeating a wake phrase. That is distinct from a claim that the microphone is continuously recording and retaining everything.
  • Active capture: When an interaction is underway, the microphone captures speech for processing. It may also pick up nearby voices, not just the wearer’s words.

These distinctions matter because a device can be ready to detect a trigger without retaining a continuous audio file, while a short active interaction can still capture speech that a wearer did not intend to include. A light, sound, or stop command may help identify or end certain states, but their presence and scope vary by product.

What happens between speaking and getting an answer?

A voice interaction is a chain of steps. Separating them makes it easier to understand what a privacy notice or setting actually covers: microphone readiness, capture, speech recognition, interpretation, response, and any later retention.

1. The device becomes ready for a request

A wake phrase, button, touch, or another trigger may start the interaction. Ray-Ban’s UK FAQ describes one particular option for Ray-Ban Meta glasses: when “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’” is enabled, the microphone remains on for a short time after a request. The FAQ says it switches off after a few seconds without another request, and that the wearer can end the conversation by saying “Stop” or “Cancel.” This is a product-specific description, not a standard behavior for AI wearables generally.

2. Speech is captured and may be indicated

Ray-Ban says the glasses record and process audio if the wearer starts speaking during that follow-up window. Its FAQ also says the notification LED shows when the glasses are processing audio. An indicator can be a useful cue, but it does not establish that every wearable has an equivalent light or that indicators on different products cover the same stages. Check what a manufacturer says its indicator means: readiness, capture, processing, or some combination.

3. Speech is recognized and interpreted

Speech recognition turns spoken words into text or another machine-readable representation. Microsoft’s documentation distinguishes device-based speech recognition from cloud-based recognition. Its privacy statement says cloud speech recognition collects voice recordings and creates a text transcription. That example shows why “Does my voice go to the cloud?” cannot be answered universally: a product or operating system may offer more than one processing path, and the path can depend on the feature and settings.

Recognition and interpretation are also different jobs. Recognition identifies what was said; the system then uses that result to carry out a command or formulate a response. A spoken or visual answer does not, by itself, tell you whether the original audio or resulting transcript was saved.

4. The system responds, then may retain data

After processing, the wearable or its connected service can return an answer or perform an action. Audio, transcripts, or both may be retained, and some services may allow recordings to be contributed for product improvement. Those are separate policy questions from whether speech recognition happens on-device or online.

Microsoft Support describes an optional contribution process for voice clips. It says contributed clips are stored for up to two years, while sampled clips may be retained longer for continued model improvement. This is a Microsoft policy statement about contributed clips, not a general retention period for wearables or for every voice interaction.

Does an AI wearable record everything you say?

The available product descriptions do not support a universal yes or no. Wake-phrase systems can mishear and activate unexpectedly, according to the FTC, but that is not the same as establishing that a particular wearable continuously saves everything spoken nearby. To assess a device, distinguish microphone readiness and capture from saving or transmitting a recording.

Ask what the device does in each state: before activation, during a request, and after the response. Look for a product-specific explanation of whether audio is captured during a wake-word check, how long any follow-up window lasts, what an indicator signals, and whether audio or text is retained. If the documentation does not answer a question, treat that behavior as unestablished rather than assuming the most reassuring—or most alarming—interpretation.

Does the speech stay on the device or go to the cloud?

Either path is possible, and one product can use more than one. On-device processing can limit the need to transmit raw audio for a covered feature, while cloud processing can involve sending recordings to an online service. The precise answer must be tied to the feature, model, and setting—not just the wearable brand.

Apple says its Audio Intelligence features on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 process raw audio in a protected buffer in the S11 chip’s Secure Exclave and immediately delete it after processing; Apple also says those features do not create or store audio recordings. This is Apple’s description of those named features and models. It does not establish how every Apple Watch feature, Siri interaction, or other device handles audio.

Microsoft’s documentation provides a contrasting example of selectable paths: it describes device-based and cloud-based speech recognition, and says online speech recognition can be turned off. Microsoft notes that features relying on online recognition may stop working when it is disabled, while device-based features may continue. A privacy setting can therefore change both the data path and what the device can do.

What privacy controls should you look for?

Useful controls let you limit activation, understand when audio is being processed, manage what is retained, and choose whether clips contribute to improvement. The available controls differ by product, so verify them in the current documentation for the particular feature you use.

  • Activation: Can you choose a button or touch interaction instead of a wake phrase? Can voice activation be disabled?
  • Capture cues and stop controls: Does the device identify when audio is being processed, and can you end an interaction with a command or physical control? Ray-Ban documents an LED and “Stop” or “Cancel” commands for the behavior described in its FAQ.
  • Cloud processing: Can you turn online speech recognition off? Which features will stop working, and which device-based functions remain available?
  • Retention and deletion: Does the service retain raw audio, transcripts, or both? How long are they kept, and can you delete them?
  • Human review and improvement contributions: Can employees or contractors review clips? Is contributing audio optional, and can you opt out without disabling essential functions?

The FTC recommends checking privacy settings, looking for a physical mute control or listening alerts, and reviewing options to delete recordings or opt out of human review. Its advice concerns voice assistants generally; it is a checklist of issues to investigate, not proof that a particular wearable has any one control.

Can someone listen to your recordings?

That depends on the service’s policy and your choices. A product may process speech without retaining it as a recording, or a service may retain some clips under particular settings. Microsoft’s optional voice-clip contribution example illustrates why you should check whether review is possible, whether participation is opt-in, and what retention terms apply; it does not establish that Microsoft or another provider reviews every interaction.

Do not treat “processed on-device,” “not stored,” and “not reviewed by a person” as interchangeable claims. Each describes a different part of the data path. A useful privacy notice should make clear which data type is covered—raw audio, transcript, or both—and whether the statement applies to all interactions or only a named feature.

What about people speaking nearby?

An activated microphone can capture surrounding speech as well as the wearer’s command. That is a practical concern in shared spaces, even when the wearer intends to ask a brief question. Think about whether people nearby can reasonably tell that a voice interaction is happening, whether the conversation is sensitive, and whether a less intrusive way to use the feature is available.

The sources cited here do not establish jurisdiction-specific rules for recording other people. Legal requirements depend on where the people involved are and the circumstances, so do not treat a device’s indicator or manufacturer policy as a substitute for checking applicable local law.

How can you compare two voice-enabled wearables?

Compare the whole interaction rather than relying on a broad label such as “AI,” “private,” or “on-device.” A device’s behavior may differ by feature, and two products’ indicators or retention promises may cover different things.

  1. Identify the trigger. Find out whether speech starts with a wake phrase, button, touch, or another action. Ask how long the microphone remains ready after a request.
  2. Trace the processing path. Check whether recognition is on-device, cloud-based, or selectable. Find out whether core voice features work without online recognition.
  3. Read the indicator definition. Determine whether a light or sound signals active capture, processing, or another state. Do not assume an indicator means no audio was captured before it appeared.
  4. Separate audio from text. Look for distinct statements about raw recordings and transcripts, including retention, deletion, and whether data is used to improve a service.
  5. Check review and opt-out terms. Ask whether human review is possible, whether contributing clips is optional, and whether turning it off affects the features you need.
  6. Confirm the scope. Match each privacy claim to the exact model, feature, region, and setting. Recheck the current product documentation because features and policies can change.

The FTC’s guidance is useful for general questions about wake-word errors, settings, deletion, and human review. Product documentation from Ray-Ban, Microsoft, and Apple gives examples of particular controls and processing claims. The Bipartisan Policy Center’s May 2026 AI Wearables Fact Sheet also identifies transparency, data control, and accountability as open questions. None of these sources establishes a universal technical standard for wearable microphone indicators or independently verifies the actual audio path of every named device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an AI wearable for a confidential conversation?

The sources here do not establish that any wearable is appropriate for every confidential setting. If the conversation is sensitive, the safer choice is to avoid voice features unless you have checked the device’s capture behavior and the service’s applicable data terms.

Is a microphone indicator proof that nobody else can hear the audio?

No. An indicator can show a device state, but it does not by itself explain where audio is processed, whether a transcript is retained, or whether a service permits review. Read the product’s definition of the indicator alongside its data-handling terms.

Do privacy claims from a manufacturer count as independent verification?

No. A manufacturer’s documentation establishes what the company says about its product, not an independent audit of the audio path. The cited documentation does not provide independent testing of the named devices.
