AI wearables do not handle just the photo or voice note you intentionally save. Depending on the device and feature, they may generate camera and microphone data, transcripts, summaries, Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi status, battery and software diagnostics, and security telemetry. Simple actions can run on the wearable, while transcription, visual search, or long-term recall may send data to a vendor’s cloud. Retention then depends on settings: some media stays on the device, some is temporarily uploaded, and account records may persist until you delete or deactivate the account.

The practical way to judge a wearable is to trace one recording from sensor to deletion: what it captures, where processing occurs, how long each copy survives, whether it can enter model training, and how people nearby are notified.

What data do AI wearables collect?

AI wearables collect raw sensor data, the results derived from it, and operational information needed to run and secure the product. The visible photograph or spoken command is only one layer.

Raw camera and microphone content

Camera-equipped glasses can create photos, videos, livestreams, and still frames used to answer visual questions. Microphones can capture voice commands and, on audio-first devices, complete conversations or meetings. A recording may later produce a transcript, summary, note, embedding, or other AI-generated result.

Device and service telemetry

Ray-Ban Meta documentation lists Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi status, battery condition, operating-system version, errors and crashes, temperature and physical-safety signals, and security or abuse telemetry alongside camera media and voice data. This information helps operate, troubleshoot, secure, and improve the glasses, but it can also reveal when a device is active, which connections it uses, or whether it is malfunctioning.

PLAUD documents audio recordings, transcripts, summaries, notes, and related metadata. Metadata can include information about a file or request even when the spoken words are not being retained in the same place, so a privacy review should cover both content and account activity.

Are AI wearables always listening or watching?

A wearable may keep sensors ready for a wake word, button press, or gesture without saving every moment as a user-accessible recording. The available product documentation does not establish one universal “always listening” or “always watching” behavior across the category; recording, preview, livestream, and AI-query modes can have different rules.

Camera indicators are feature-specific

Ray-Ban Meta says a capture LED signals gallery photos, videos, and livestreams. Its newer models may use the camera for certain AI questions without turning on that capture LED, while applying protections such as removing license plates or phone numbers. Consequently, the absence of a visible light is not proof that no image data was processed; it means the device is not using the indicator for that particular AI interaction.

Check the active mode, not just the hardware

Before using a wearable in a meeting, review which gesture, button, voice phrase, or app command starts a recording; whether a phone connection is required; and which indicators appear. Treat a livestream or gallery capture as different from a one-shot visual question, and explain those differences to people nearby.

How does data move from the wearable to an AI answer?

Most current products use a hybrid pipeline. The wearable handles latency-sensitive or simple actions locally, while larger models and searches run on a phone or vendor cloud. The exact path changes with the feature, network state, and account settings.

1. Capture and local buffering

The sensor creates audio, images, or video. The device may keep the capture locally until you import it, request transcription, or enable synchronization. A local copy can therefore exist even when no cloud copy has yet been made.

2. Phone-mediated or cloud processing

Some actions are sent through a companion phone; others go directly to a service when the wearable has a network path. Streaming transcription, contextual search, and long-term recall are examples of workloads that Ray-Ban Meta identifies as requiring cloud compute, whereas simple hands-free actions can occur on-device.

3. AI output and account storage

The service returns a transcript, summary, answer, or edited media. That result may be saved in an app account even when the temporary input used during processing is later deleted. Deleting one layer does not automatically mean that every other layer—device cache, phone import, cloud library, or account record—has disappeared.

Ray-Ban Meta’s documented private-processing design

Meta describes a Private Processing architecture using confidential virtual machines, remote attestation, encrypted transport and storage, and user-provided keys for persistent memory. Meta’s engineering explanation notes that conventional cloud systems must decrypt data in host memory while processing, whereas its confidential-computing boundary is intended to keep data unreadable to the host operating system, hypervisor, and Meta itself. These are architectural claims made by Meta, not an independent audit finding.

PLAUD NotePin’s documented flow

PLAUD NotePin records locally and sends audio or text over TLS 1.2 or later when you request transcription or summarization. The AI provider returns the result and, under PLAUD’s stated enterprise agreements, discards the input and output without retention, caching, logging, or model-training use. The resulting transcript or summary is then saved to your PLAUD account.

Where are recordings, transcripts, and summaries stored?

Storage is feature- and setting-dependent. The table separates the documented locations and retention rules for two representative products.

Product and data path Documented storage and retention Processing and security details
Ray-Ban Meta gallery captures Captures remain privately on the glasses until imported to a phone. Simple hands-free actions can run on-device; more advanced features can use cloud compute.
Ray-Ban Meta cloud media for higher-quality processing Temporarily stored for 30 days, then auto-expires; the FAQ says this can be disabled in settings. Meta describes encrypted transport and storage and a confidential-processing design for selected workloads.
Ray-Ban Meta AI-feature photos and videos The FAQ says these are not saved in Meta AI conversation history. This statement concerns conversation history, not every possible device, phone, or gallery copy.
PLAUD NotePin recordings Stored on the device. They can also be stored in PLAUD Cloud when Cloud Sync is enabled. The NotePin product page lists 64 GB of device storage and up to 20 hours of continuous recording.
PLAUD audio sent for transcription or summarization When Cloud Sync is disabled, PLAUD says audio and transcription data are transferred for processing but are not stored in the cloud. Transfers use TLS 1.2 or later; PLAUD says its AI providers discard inputs and outputs and do not use them for model training under enterprise agreements.
PLAUD account data Generally retained while the account is active; after deactivation, PLAUD says data is deleted or anonymized according to applicable law. Controlled personnel access is limited to cases such as requested support, incident diagnosis, or legal requirements, with role-based controls and logging.

The 30-day period applies to Ray-Ban Meta’s temporary cloud media used for higher-quality processing, not to every item associated with an account. Likewise, disabling PLAUD Cloud Sync controls cloud storage but does not by itself tell you what remains on the NotePin or in a phone export.

Can an AI wearable company use your recordings to train models?

Do not infer a training policy from the presence of encryption or a deletion button. Training use is a separate contractual and product-policy question that should be checked for recordings, prompts, transcripts, summaries, images, and metadata.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PLAUD’s stated policy

PLAUD says its AI providers operate under enterprise agreements requiring zero data retention and no training use. Its processing documentation says recordings, transcripts, and summaries are processed to deliver the service and then discarded by the AI provider. The resulting transcript or summary can still be stored in your PLAUD account, which is a different retention layer from the provider’s temporary processing copy.

Meta’s private-processing claims are not the same as a blanket training promise

Meta’s confidential-computing description explains how selected data is protected while being processed. That architectural boundary does not, by itself, answer whether every category of account data, diagnostics, or feedback may be used for product improvement. Read the current privacy and feature settings for the exact service you are enabling, especially when a feature creates persistent memory.

How long does data remain, and how can you delete it?

Deletion is a sequence, not a single switch. Work through every place a copy may exist.

  1. Stop new collection. End an active recording or livestream and disable optional AI, memory, or cloud-sync features you do not need.
  2. Remove local copies. Delete recordings from the wearable using its companion app or device controls. For Ray-Ban Meta, gallery captures can remain on the glasses until you import them, so check the glasses as well as the phone.
  3. Review phone storage. Imported photos, exported audio, downloaded transcripts, and automatic backups can survive a wearable-app deletion.
  4. Delete cloud media and results. Remove files, transcripts, summaries, and notes from the vendor account. Ray-Ban Meta’s temporary higher-quality-processing media is documented as auto-expiring after 30 days, but user-managed copies follow their own controls.
  5. Deactivate the account if appropriate. PLAUD says account data is deleted or anonymized after deactivation according to applicable law. Save any records you are legally required to keep before deactivating.
  6. Confirm the outcome. Sign out, check the account’s web and mobile views, inspect connected phones, and review the privacy dashboard or support confirmation. Deleting an account cannot retract a copy you already shared with another person.

Keep screenshots of the setting you changed and the date of a deletion request. Vendor interfaces and retention rules can change, so repeat this review after major app or firmware updates.

What do encryption and confidential computing protect—and what do they not?

Encryption protects data while it travels and while it is stored. It does not automatically hide operational metadata, prevent an authorized account holder from opening a transcript, or stop a person in the room from hearing what was recorded.

Transport and storage encryption

PLAUD documents TLS 1.2 or later for transfers to its processing service. Meta describes encrypted transport and storage for its Private Processing system. These controls reduce interception risk, but the service still has to process a request somewhere, and cloud operators may observe some metadata unless the design specifically conceals it.

Confidential-computing boundaries

Meta says confidential virtual machines, remote attestation, non-targetable routing, publicly witnessed binary transparency, and encrypted stateful storage are intended to restrict access during processing. Such features can narrow the trust boundary, but they do not eliminate risks from compromised devices, account takeover, incorrect settings, policy changes, or data you deliberately export.

Human access and support

PLAUD says personnel access is restricted to controlled cases such as user-requested support, incident diagnosis, or legal requirements, with role-based controls and logging. That is a governance safeguard, not a guarantee that no employee will ever handle data; it describes when access is permitted and how it is controlled.

How should you protect people who are recorded nearby?

User control and bystander consent are separate responsibilities. You may control your account, but another person still has privacy interests in their voice, face, license plate, phone number, or confidential conversation.

Give a clear notice

Before capturing a meeting or conversation, say what the device will record, why you are recording, who can access the result, and how long you plan to keep it. PLAUD’s product guidance recommends a quick heads-up and obtaining consent when required by law.

Respect places with an expectation of privacy

Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance recommends asking permission before taking a photo or video and avoiding places where people reasonably expect privacy. Turn off capture or leave the device behind in bedrooms, changing areas, medical consultations, classrooms, and confidential workplaces unless everyone has agreed and local law allows it.

Do not rely on the indicator alone

The Ray-Ban Meta capture LED covers gallery photos, videos, and livestreams, but certain AI questions may use the camera without that LED. Explain the active feature instead of presenting the light as a universal guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you compare before buying an AI wearable?

Use a written data-flow checklist rather than judging a product only by camera quality, battery life, or model features. The following comparison axes expose the privacy trade-offs.

  • Sensor scope: Identify cameras, microphones, location or motion sensors, and operational telemetry such as connectivity, battery, temperature, crashes, and abuse signals.
  • Processing location: Ask which actions are on-device, which pass through a phone, and which require a vendor cloud or confidential cloud enclave.
  • Retention: Look for local-only defaults, cloud-sync switches, automatic expiration, account-lifetime rules, and the exact deletion path.
  • Training policy: Check whether recordings, prompts, transcripts, summaries, images, or metadata may train models, and whether the policy applies to subcontracted AI providers.
  • Bystander signaling: Verify visible LEDs, spoken notices, on-screen indicators, and the manufacturer’s consent guidance for each recording mode.
  • Offline capability: Determine whether capture works without a phone or network and which functions wait for cloud processing.
  • Regional handling: Find where data is processed, which subprocessors receive it, and which legal regime governs account deletion and access requests.
  • Ongoing cost and limits: Check subscriptions, transcription-minute allowances, cloud-storage plans, and whether a paid tier changes retention or processing options.

For a concrete baseline, PLAUD NotePin lists 64 GB of device storage and up to 20 hours of continuous recording, while Ray-Ban Meta documentation specifies a 30-day automatic expiration for certain temporary cloud media. Those figures describe particular products and features, not an industry standard.

What are the most common privacy mistakes?

  • Assuming “on-device” applies to every feature: Advanced search, streaming transcription, and persistent recall can trigger cloud processing even when a basic command works locally.
  • Deleting only the app: Phone imports, device caches, cloud libraries, and account records can remain elsewhere.
  • Treating encryption as consent: Secure transport does not give you permission to record another person.
  • Confusing provider deletion with account deletion: A processing provider may discard an input while the returned transcript stays in your account.
  • Ignoring updates: Firmware, app, and privacy-setting changes can alter which features use the cloud or how indicators behave.
  • Promising universal behavior: There is no independent cross-industry statistic showing how often AI wearables upload data. Compare the exact model, feature, region, and setting instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my AI wearable has no phone or internet connection?

Local capture may still work, but cloud-dependent transcription, contextual search, and summaries generally wait until a network path is available. Check the device’s offline documentation before relying on it in airplane mode or a restricted workplace.

Does turning off cloud sync delete files that were already uploaded?

Not necessarily. A sync switch controls future transfers or ongoing synchronization; it may not remove existing cloud files, phone imports, or account results. Delete those copies separately and look for a confirmation in the service’s storage controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a recording LED legally sufficient notice to other people?

An indicator is a technical signal, not a substitute for consent rules. Recording laws differ by jurisdiction and circumstance, so tell participants what you are capturing and obtain permission whenever local law or the setting requires it.

Can I use an AI recorder for confidential work meetings?

Only after your employer, clients, and every required participant approve the practice. Confirm where transcripts are processed, who can access the account, whether cloud sync is enabled, and how quickly the resulting files can be deleted.

What should I do when a wearable captures sensitive information by mistake?

Stop the recording, delete the local file, remove any phone and cloud copies, and review account activity for exports or shared links. If another person’s information was involved, notify the relevant people or your organization’s privacy contact and follow applicable incident procedures.
