AI video generators do not point a virtual camera at a finished scene. They convert your text into conditioning information, create a noisy internal representation of a possible clip, and repeatedly refine it until a decoder can turn the result into video pixels. The system must generate both what appears in each frame and how people, objects, lighting, and camera movement relate from frame to frame. That temporal problem is why a prompt can produce an attractive shot yet still cause a hand, face, or prop to change during the action.

What does an AI video generator actually do with a prompt?

A prompt is an instruction signal, not a screenplay that the model follows line by line. The text is converted into numerical conditioning information that influences a generative model trained on visual and motion patterns. The model then samples a possible sequence and refines it; the wording, the model architecture, and the examples represented in training all affect the result.

That distinction matters when you evaluate an output. A request such as “a cyclist turns left at an intersection” does not cause the software to simulate a complete 3D street, attach a camera to it, and render the scene in the conventional computer-graphics sense. It steers a learned system toward visual and temporal patterns associated with cyclists, intersections, turning, and the requested style. The result can be plausible without being physically or narratively exact.

Different products use different architectures and pipelines. A useful general description is prompt encoding, noisy generation, iterative refinement, temporal-consistency processing, decoding, and optional enhancement. Runway presents that sequence in its vendor-authored explainer, but it should not be treated as a specification for every generator: Runway’s overview of AI video generation.

How does diffusion create motion from noise?

In diffusion-based generation, the system begins with a representation dominated by noise and predicts a cleaner version over many steps. Each prediction is guided by the prompt and by the model’s learned visual statistics. As the noise is reduced, broad structure such as composition and subject placement emerges before finer details and textures are resolved.

OpenAI describes Sora this way in its official system card: “Sora is a diffusion model, which generates a video by starting off with a base video that looks like static noise and gradually transforms it by removing the noise over many steps.” That sentence describes Sora specifically, not a universal implementation: OpenAI’s Sora System Card.

Why the process takes many steps

A single prediction from random noise would have to decide the scene, subjects, actions, camera, lighting, and every pixel at once. Iterative denoising lets the model make progressively more constrained decisions. Early stages establish a coherent global arrangement; later stages add edges, color, surface detail, and motion cues. The exact number and scheduling of denoising steps vary by model and may be hidden by the product interface, so a setting in one service cannot be compared directly with a setting in another.

What “latent” means in this context

Many systems do not perform the entire computation on raw pixels. They first compress visual data into a lower-dimensional latent representation, operate there, and decode the finished latent back into pixels. Compression reduces the amount of data the generative model must process, while the decoder reconstructs an image sequence that users can view and download.

Why is video harder than generating a single image?

A still image needs to be plausible at one instant. A video must remain plausible across a sequence of instants. The model has to preserve identity, shape, lighting, perspective, and object relationships while also changing the parts that should move.

OpenAI’s technical description of Sora illustrates one approach: video is compressed in both spatial and temporal dimensions, then divided into small space-time patches that function as transformer tokens. The model predicts those patches together rather than treating the clip as unrelated still images. This design is described in OpenAI’s technical explanation of video generation models; it is not evidence that every commercial system uses the same representation.

The temporal-consistency problem

Temporal consistency means that an element keeps an appropriate identity and relationship as frames change. A person should retain recognizable facial features, clothing, and body proportions; a cup should remain on the table instead of changing shape; and a camera move should alter viewpoint smoothly rather than jumping unpredictably. Occlusion makes the task especially difficult: when a person passes behind a vehicle, the model must reconstruct the person when they reappear.

OpenAI says Sora receives information from many frames at once, which can help a subject remain consistent when it temporarily leaves the field of view. That can reduce, but does not eliminate, continuity errors. A generator can still lose track of fingers, text on signs, jewelry, or the exact location of a prop, particularly during fast motion or a cut.

What happens inside a prompt-to-video pipeline?

The stages below are a conceptual map. Products may merge stages, add proprietary modules, or omit some entirely.

  1. Prompt encoding: the written description is converted into a numerical representation that can condition the generative network. Words about a subject, action, setting, style, and camera influence different aspects of the output.
  2. Initial noisy representation: the system creates or receives a noisy latent video representation. In a text-only workflow, this is generated from random initialization; in an image-guided workflow, the starting representation is anchored by the supplied image.
  3. Spatiotemporal prediction: the model predicts cleaner representations while considering content and motion across frames. Architectures that process space and time jointly can use relationships between neighboring and more distant frames.
  4. Iterative denoising: repeated predictions move the representation toward a clip that better matches the conditioning information and the model’s learned distribution.
  5. Latent decoding: a decoder converts the refined representation into pixel frames. This is where compressed information becomes an ordinary video sequence.
  6. Post-processing: a service may upscale resolution, interpolate or stabilize motion, extend a clip, add audio, or apply safety and quality checks. These options differ by provider and plan.

Because these steps are implementation-dependent, avoid assuming that a control exposed in one interface—such as a “motion strength” slider—has an equivalent meaning elsewhere.

What should you put in a text-to-video prompt?

Describe what should be visible and how it should move. Runway’s official prompting guide recommends specifying the subject and its appearance, environment, lighting, composition, subject action, environmental motion, camera movement, timing, direction, and speed. The guide is product-specific advice, so use it as a practical starting point rather than a guarantee: Runway’s Text to Video Prompting Guide.

A reliable writing order

  1. Subject: name the main person, animal, object, or group and include distinctive visible traits.
  2. Setting: state where the action occurs and identify important background elements.
  3. Action: use a concrete verb and describe the change over time, not just a static pose.
  4. Camera: specify shot size or viewpoint and any move, such as a slow push-in, pan, orbit, or tracking shot.
  5. Motion and timing: describe direction, speed, rhythm, and environmental movement such as wind, rain, smoke, or traffic.
  6. Visual treatment: add lighting, color, lens or composition preferences, and an animation or live-action look when they are important.

Put the elements that matter most near the beginning and change one or two variables at a time while iterating. If a desired component is missing, make it more explicit rather than adding a long list of unrelated adjectives.

Illustrative prompt pattern

A medium shot of a red kite flying over a beach. The camera tracks it from left to right as the wind ripples the water; soft overcast light.

This example is a writing aid, not a validated formula. It identifies the subject, setting, action, camera behavior, environmental motion, and lighting without pretending to specify every frame.

How does image-to-video differ from text-to-video?

In image-to-video generation, the input image supplies much of the initial composition, subject appearance, color palette, and viewpoint. The prompt can therefore concentrate on motion and camera behavior: for example, “the subject turns toward the window while the camera slowly arcs right.” This workflow can provide a stronger visual anchor than text alone, but it does not guarantee that the generator will preserve every detail.

Runway documents this division of labor in its prompting guidance: when an image is supplied, describe the movement you want to see rather than rewriting all of the image’s contents. Other providers may expose different controls, so check the instructions for the specific model.

Why does a generated video lose track of a person or object?

Identity drift usually occurs when the model must infer details that are weakly specified, hidden by an occlusion, or represented inconsistently in its learned patterns. Fast camera movement, long durations, multiple interacting subjects, reflections, fine text, and hands are demanding because small errors compound across frames.

Common symptoms and likely causes

  • Face or clothing changes: the subject lacks a strong visual anchor, or the requested motion exposes unseen views.
  • Object morphing: the object is partly hidden, unusually shaped, or involved in contact with another object.
  • Background swimming: the camera move, lighting change, or depth relationship is ambiguous.
  • Broken text and logos: small lettering is difficult to preserve during generation and decoding.
  • Action stops or reverses: the prompt describes an outcome but not the direction, speed, or sequence of the movement.

Ways to improve continuity

  1. Shorten the action to one clearly defined event and reduce the number of simultaneously moving subjects.
  2. Use an image input when the person, product, or layout must begin from a particular appearance.
  3. Describe camera direction and subject direction separately, including left-to-right or right-to-left movement.
  4. Keep lighting and environment stable unless a change is essential to the shot.
  5. Generate several short candidates, select the most consistent one, and extend or edit it only if the product supports that workflow.

These steps improve the odds; they do not turn a probabilistic generator into a deterministic animation rig.

How do text-only, image-guided, and video-guided workflows compare?

The input type determines how much of the starting appearance and motion is already fixed. The table compares the workflow choices at a conceptual level; exact duration limits, formats, controls, and editing features depend on the provider and model.

Workflow What you provide Where it gives control Typical trade-off
Text-to-video A written prompt Concept, setting, action, camera and visual treatment Most flexible starting point, but appearance and continuity are less anchored
Image-to-video An image plus a motion prompt Starting composition, subject look, and requested movement Stronger visual reference, while unseen views and complex motion remain uncertain
Video-guided or video-to-video An existing clip plus instructions Timing, pose sequence, and broad motion from the source clip Can preserve choreography, but may inherit source artifacts and require more processing

When evaluating a service, compare these input workflows alongside motion and camera controls, temporal consistency, output duration and format, extension or editing tools, and current availability. The available sources do not establish a neutral benchmark that ranks providers overall.

What controls the output’s size, duration, and aspect ratio?

In Sora’s technical description, arranging latent patches in a grid at inference time helps control output size, duration, and aspect ratio. That is an architectural account of Sora, not a promise that every interface exposes those dimensions in the same way. A product may offer a small set of presets, enforce a maximum duration, or charge different amounts for different resolutions.

Before starting a project, check the model’s current documentation for maximum clip length, frame rate, aspect-ratio options, file format, generation limits, and whether an extension is a new generation or a continuation from the existing clip. These details can change independently of the underlying research description.

What is currently available from major providers?

Availability is volatile and must be checked in the provider’s own documentation. For a dated example, Google’s Gemini API video-generation page, accessed October 25, 2026, identifies Gemini Omni Flash as the default video-generation model in that API and states that Veo 3.1 Preview API models were shut down on October 22, 2026: Google’s Gemini API video-generation documentation. That statement applies to the Gemini API documentation at that date; it does not establish the status of other Google products or other vendors.

Do not choose a model solely because its name appears in an older tutorial. Confirm the endpoint, model identifier, regional access, authentication method, quota, pricing, safety restrictions, and supported input types immediately before implementation.

How should you troubleshoot an unsatisfactory generation?

Change the variable that corresponds to the failure instead of rewriting the entire prompt at once. This makes it easier to tell whether the problem came from subject description, action, camera direction, or an incompatible output setting.

  • Wrong subject or setting: move the essential noun and location to the beginning, remove competing subjects, and regenerate.
  • Correct subject, wrong action: replace abstract wording with a visible verb and specify direction and speed.
  • Correct action, unstable identity: use a reference image, shorten the shot, simplify occlusions, and keep wardrobe or lighting constant.
  • Camera behaves incorrectly: state the camera move independently from the subject move, including the starting and ending direction.
  • Output is visually plausible but unusable: verify aspect ratio, duration, frame rate, resolution, and whether the service added enhancement or cropping.

Save the prompt, input image, model identifier, settings, and generation date for each accepted clip. Reproducibility is limited because sampling and service versions can change, but a record makes successful iterations easier to diagnose and repeat.

What are the limits of the “world simulator” idea?

Generative video can reproduce regularities in appearance and motion without possessing human-like understanding or a guaranteed physical model. It may produce a convincing shadow while getting the object’s geometry wrong, or show a plausible collision without preserving momentum. The safest description is that the model uses conditioning information and learned representations to generate a likely visual sequence.

OpenAI’s Sora research description discusses varied resolutions, durations, and aspect ratios through its latent and patch representation. Those capabilities do not imply reliable long-form storytelling, exact physical simulation, or perfect object permanence. Treat each output as a synthesized clip that requires inspection, especially when continuity, readable text, identity, or legal and safety-sensitive details matter.

What should you check before using a generated clip?

  • Inspect the entire sequence, not only the first frame or thumbnail.
  • Check faces, hands, reflections, text, logos, and contact points frame by frame when they matter.
  • Confirm that the motion, camera path, duration, and aspect ratio match the intended use.
  • Review the provider’s rules for training data, uploaded images, likenesses, copyrighted material, and commercial use.
  • Keep an unedited source export and record the model and date so later revisions can be traced.

The practical result is a fast way to explore moving-image concepts, not a replacement for judgment. Prompt clarity improves the conditioning signal, while short shots, strong visual references, and deliberate review reduce—but cannot remove—the uncertainty inherent in generated motion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI video generator guarantee that a character looks identical in every frame?

No. Temporal methods can improve continuity, but identity can still drift when the character is occluded, viewed from a new angle, or involved in rapid motion. For critical continuity, use a reference image, shorter shots, and manual review or conventional compositing after generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does changing one word sometimes change the whole clip?

The prompt is conditioning information for the entire generation, not a set of isolated commands. A changed noun or action can alter the model’s inferred composition, camera choice, lighting, and motion together, especially when the wording removes an anchor that constrained the original result.

Can these systems generate synchronized dialogue and sound automatically?

Some products offer audio or speech features, while others return silent video or require a separate audio workflow. Treat sound generation, lip synchronization, and licensing as separate capabilities and verify them in the current model documentation rather than assuming they come with video output.

Is a longer prompt always better for video generation?

No. Extra adjectives can compete with the action or camera instruction and make the intended priority unclear. A concise description of the subject, setting, visible action, camera behavior, and essential lighting is usually a better starting point than an exhaustive paragraph.
