Food-delivery apps use AI both before and after you tap an order: to help restaurants create and organize menu content, to rank dishes and suggest meals, and to make discovery or cart-building more conversational. Some features also turn complicated menus into guided ordering screens. These tools can make a large menu easier to navigate, but availability varies by app, market, merchant, and whether a feature is still a pilot.
Where does AI enter the food-delivery experience?
AI can influence several connected parts of an order, not just a chatbot or a recommendation carousel. A restaurant may use it to draft an item description; the app may interpret menu data to present clearer choices; and the customer-facing app may rank restaurants, recommend dishes, or help assemble a cart. After an order is placed, the broader idea of AI support is relevant, but the available platform examples here chiefly describe discovery and ordering assistance—not a measured share of order-status or customer-support work handled by AI.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat distinction matters: an announced feature proves that a company has introduced or is testing a particular capability, not that every customer sees it or that AI runs every step of every order. Individual launches should not be treated as evidence of an industry-wide adoption rate.
Merchant-facing tools
These are tools intended to help restaurants create, improve, or structure the information customers see. Examples include generating descriptions, improving photo presentation, reviewing uploaded images, and converting unstructured menu details into selectable options.

Customer-facing tools
These shape what customers discover and how they order: recommendations, menu tags, suggested add-ons, guided customization, and conversational or voice-based assistance. A single experience may combine several of these functions, but each has a different job and should be judged on its own results.
Can AI write restaurant menu descriptions and improve photos?
Yes. DoorDash announced a tool that generates item descriptions from an item name and existing photos, as well as AI photo tools, automated photo approvals, and background enhancement intended to leave the food itself unchanged (DoorDash, 2025). These are merchant-content tools: they help prepare or review what appears on a menu, rather than deciding what a customer should order.
How description generation can work
A short item name may not tell a customer what a dish contains or how it differs from similar choices. A generation system can use that name and available images to draft fuller copy. DoorDash Engineering describes a production approach that combines structured and multimodal item information, learning and generation adapted to merchant voice and cuisine, and ongoing evaluation with automated and human review (DoorDash Engineering, 2025).
The engineering account also describes structured options, computer vision, similarity retrieval, conditional prompting, few-shot examples, and retrieval-augmented generation. In practical terms, the system can draw on information already attached to an item, use visual cues, and retrieve relevant examples to help produce a description when the item’s own data is sparse. The account specifically identifies sparse information and cold-start items as challenges the pipeline is designed to address.
That does not make a generated description a verified ingredient list. A polished sentence can still omit an allergen, overstate a feature, or misread an image. Restaurants remain important reviewers because they know the recipe and must make sure the final text accurately represents the dish. Customers with allergies or other strict dietary needs should rely on confirmed ingredient and preparation information, not infer safety from generated prose or a photo.

What photo tools do—and do not claim to do
Automated approval can help screen submitted images, while background enhancement can make a photo presentation cleaner. DoorDash described its background tool as intended to change the setting without changing the food itself. That stated design goal is not a guarantee that every image will be perfect or that all platforms use the same safeguards. Merchants should check the resulting image against the actual menu item before publishing it.
How can AI turn a complicated menu into an easier order?
AI can interpret menu items and their options, then present them as a more structured sequence of choices. DoorDash’s AI pizza experience identifies pizza items and guides customers through choices such as size, crust, specialty shape, and half-and-half toppings; it is designed to preserve selections when a customer changes options (DoorDash, 2026).
From modifier list to guided choices
Restaurant menus often represent a customizable dish with long or inconsistent lists of modifiers. A customer may need to work out which options are required, which can be combined, and whether one selection replaces another. A guided interface can turn those details into a sequence: choose a base option, then select compatible additions or configurations. The value is not merely a conversational layer; it is the conversion of menu data into a usable ordering structure.
For a half-and-half pizza, for example, the interface needs to represent the two sides without losing the fact that both belong to one item. If a customer changes the size or crust, preserving compatible selections can avoid making them rebuild the order. That is the kind of interaction the announced experience is intended to support; it should not be read as a claim that every menu or every possible combination is handled correctly.
Availability and the limits of the example
At announcement, the pizza feature was rolling out to select merchants, with expansion to other cuisines planned. That makes it an example of a limited rollout, not a universal app capability. Whether a customer sees it depends on the market and merchant, and the announcement does not establish the present availability for every account.

How do food-delivery apps decide what to recommend?
Recommendation systems use signals about a customer and the available menu to order or suggest choices. Platform announcements describe recommendations tailored to tastes and past orders, menu tags such as vegetarian or high-protein, cart add-on suggestions, custom menu recommendations, and promotions informed by prior orders (DoorDash, 2025; Uber Eats, 2025).
Signals that can shape a recommendation
In general, a recommendation may combine behavioral history, menu and merchant information, location or delivery radius, time context, and stated constraints such as dietary preferences. These inputs answer different questions: past orders may indicate familiarity; menu metadata may describe a dish; location determines what can be delivered; and time context may make a particular meal more relevant. The specific weighting, data use, and controls vary by service and are not established by the cited announcements.
A recommendation is therefore a ranked suggestion, not proof that a dish is objectively the best choice or that the system understands a person’s needs. If a customer has not ordered through an app before, there may be little personal history to use. Menu descriptions and tags can still help organize choices, but a label is only as dependable as the underlying menu information.
Useful relevance versus unwanted promotion
Personalization can reduce browsing when it surfaces a dish that matches a customer’s preferences or routine. It can also feel repetitive if the same familiar items dominate, or intrusive if promotional messages arrive too often. Uber Eats’ 2025 restaurant-trends material describes personalized promotions based on past orders, including add-ons and time-specific messages aligned with a customer’s normal ordering routine. That is a description of the approach, not independent evidence that every promotion is helpful or that the timing is accurate for each person.

Do food-delivery apps use chatbots or voice assistants to help order?
Some announced experiences use conversation or voice to help customers discover food and build an order. Just Eat Takeaway.com announced an AI Voice Assistant first launching in the UK, designed to let customers converse naturally about cuisines, restaurants, dishes, and other offerings before moving through the ordering process (Just Eat Takeaway.com, 2026). DoorDash’s help page describes an AI Assistant experience for meal ideas, reordering, adding ingredients to a cart, and weekly planning, presented as a pilot or product experience whose availability should be checked by market and account (DoorDash Help Center, 2025).
Discovery is not the same as autonomous ordering
A conversational interface can let someone describe a mood or goal instead of searching category by category. It can suggest a meal, help find a restaurant, or assist with placing items in a cart. Those tasks make it an alternative discovery and transaction interface. They do not, by themselves, establish that the system can independently finalize an order, make every choice, or resolve all exceptions without the customer.
Customers should review the restaurant, item, customization, delivery details, and total in the normal checkout flow before confirming. Natural-language requests can be ambiguous: a request for something light, for example, does not specify a portion, ingredients, or dietary standard. Conversation can make the first step easier, but it does not replace checking the actual item details.
When a voice or chat feature is worth trying
- It may help when a customer has a broad goal but does not know which cuisine or dish to search for.
- It may reduce repetitive browsing for someone who wants to repeat a prior order or assemble a cart from a request.
- It may be less useful when the request depends on exact ingredients, strict allergy requirements, or menu details that are not clearly listed.
- Because launches can be limited, check the relevant app and account rather than assuming an announced feature is available everywhere.
What happens after an order is placed?
The phrase “order support” can mean several things: helping someone choose and submit an order, answering questions while it is being prepared, or resolving a problem after delivery. The announced examples in this article provide concrete detail about discovery, reordering, cart building, menu structure, and merchant content. They do not establish what proportion of order-status inquiries, complaints, refunds, or other post-purchase support is handled by AI across the industry.
That boundary is important because a conversational assistant that helps build a cart is not automatically a customer-service agent for an active delivery. Nor does a company’s launch of one AI feature establish that the same system handles delays, missing items, cancellations, or refunds. Without reliable cross-industry figures, it would be misleading to claim that AI handles a particular share of delivery support contacts.
Best Value
How should customers and restaurants judge these AI features?
A 2025 systematic review of 55 studies published from 2022 to 2025 identifies five dimensions for evaluating customer experience in AI-enabled mobile food-ordering apps: instrumental usability, personalization value, affective engagement, data trust and procedural fairness, and social co-experience (Shorbaji, Alalwan, and Algharabat, 2025). Together, they offer a more useful test than asking only whether an app has AI.
| Dimension | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Instrumental usability | Does the feature make browsing, customization, or checkout clearer and more efficient? |
| Personalization value | Do recommendations reflect useful preferences, rather than repeatedly promoting the same items? |
| Affective engagement | Is the experience pleasant without pressuring or manipulating the customer? |
| Data trust and procedural fairness | Can customers understand how their information affects recommendations, ranking, or offers, and do they have meaningful control? |
| Social co-experience | Do social or shared features improve discovery and ordering for the people using them together? |
For restaurants, add a content-quality check: generated descriptions and enhanced images must match the real dish, and structured options must represent valid choices. For customers, distinguish a helpful suggestion from a verified fact. A recommendation may be personalized without being nutritionally or medically suitable, and an attractive image is not an ingredient disclosure.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How common is AI in food delivery?
There is no reliable cross-industry statistic in the available evidence establishing what share of food-delivery orders or support contacts are handled by AI. Company announcements show that particular features exist, are launching, or are being piloted; they cannot be converted into a percentage of all delivery activity.
One illustrative platform figure needs similar care: DoorDash reported that more than 150 million pizza orders were placed on its platform in 2025 (DoorDash, 2026). This is a platform-specific category figure, not an AI-adoption rate, a count of AI-assisted orders, or evidence about the broader delivery industry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn off AI recommendations in a food-delivery app?
The cited platform announcements do not establish a shared setting or universal opt-out. Check the app’s current account, privacy, and notification controls for options that may limit personalization or promotional messages; labels and controls can differ by service.
Does an AI-generated menu description confirm that a dish is safe for my allergy?
No. A generated description is not a verified allergen statement, and a photo cannot confirm ingredients or preparation practices. Contact the restaurant for explicit confirmation when an allergy or other strict dietary requirement is involved.
Does using AI mean a delivery app changes menu prices for each customer?
The cited examples describe recommendations and personalized promotions, but they do not establish that menu prices are individualized. To understand a specific offer or displayed price, review the item and checkout details shown in your account.
