AI-generated artwork can decorate or promote a retro-game listing, but it is not evidence that the cartridge, disc, box, or manual shown actually exists or is the item for sale. The key distinction is whether an image is clearly illustrative or is being used to represent the physical collectible. For the latter, buyers need accurate images of the actual item and evidence relevant to its authenticity and condition. Marketplace policies support those standards, but they do not establish how common AI-generated game listings are or whether AI has changed retro-game prices, fraud rates, or collector trust.
How can AI-generated images affect a retro-game purchase?
They can affect what a buyer believes is included, what condition an item is in, and whether the listing appears to show a real object. Those are distinct questions. An AI-created promotional illustration may be a presentation choice; an AI-altered product photo that hides a crack, changes a label, or makes a worn box appear pristine could misrepresent the thing being sold.

There is an important boundary to what can be concluded: marketplace guidance addresses disclosure, accurate representation, and counterfeit goods. It does not measure how often AI images appear in retro-game listings, whether they have affected realized prices, or whether they have increased fraud or changed collector confidence. Those market effects should not be assumed from image policies alone.

What is the difference between AI artwork and an AI-edited listing photo?
AI artwork is an image created or substantially generated for presentation; an AI-edited listing photo purports to depict the physical item being sold. The first can be illustrative if it is clearly presented as such. The second raises a representation problem if editing makes the actual item look materially different.

These are practical comparison categories, not a published rating system. A listing can include both an illustration and genuine item photos; the important point is that decorative art should not be mistaken for documentary evidence.
Can AI-generated art be used in a game listing?
That depends on the marketplace and on what the listing is offering. Etsy’s guidance permits certain seller-prompted AI creations when the seller discloses AI use, but disclosure alone does not make a listing accurate, authentic, or eligible under Etsy’s item categories.
When the artwork is promotional
If a seller uses generated artwork as a banner, cover image, or concept illustration, the listing should make clear that it is artwork rather than a photograph of the specific game or collectible. Buyers still need to know exactly what physical item is included. An illustration of a complete-in-box game, for example, should not leave the buyer guessing whether the box, manual, inserts, or other components are part of the sale.
When the artwork resembles the item being sold
The closer an illustration looks to a product photo, the more important it is to distinguish representation from reality. Etsy’s listing-image guidance says images should accurately represent what buyers will receive and calls for an unedited photo for most items, with applicability depending on the item type. Sellers and buyers should consult the current platform guidance rather than assume that every category follows exactly the same image rule.

Why disclosure is not authentication
Disclosure answers a question about how artwork was made; it does not establish that a cartridge, disc, box, label, or manual is original. Etsy’s seller policy also requires listings to fit its made, designed, handpicked, or sourced categories. A seller’s disclosure about AI use does not by itself show that an item meets those rules or that a vintage collectible is genuine.

How can I tell whether a retro-game listing photo is real?
No single visual clue proves that a listing photo is genuine or that the item is authentic. The practical approach is to ask whether the image is of the actual object, request additional current photos, and compare the seller’s claims with item-specific evidence.
- Ask what each image represents. Ask the seller directly whether the images show the specific item for sale, or whether any are AI-created artwork, mockups, stock images, or edited composites.
- Request current photos of the actual item. Ask for images that show the parts relevant to the description and condition claim, rather than relying only on a polished hero image.
- Check the components you expect to receive. Depending on the listing, request views of the front and back of the cartridge or disc, label, box, manual, inserts, seals, and any asserted serial or grading details.
- Compare the photos with the written description. Check that the stated contents and condition are consistent with the images. If an important detail is not visible, ask for clarification rather than inferring that it is present or undamaged.
- Review evidence tied to the item. Ask what documentation supports claims of authenticity or provenance, and consider whether it identifies or otherwise relates to the specific object being offered.
- Read the rules for the marketplace hosting the listing. Confirm what that platform currently requires for image accuracy, AI disclosure, and counterfeit goods. Do not assume one site’s policy is universal.
This checklist is a buyer’s practical method, not a formal retro-game authentication protocol. A clear photo can help assess visible condition, but a photo alone does not prove provenance or authenticity.
What should I ask a seller to prove a game is authentic?
Ask for evidence that relates to the specific item and supports the particular claim being made. A general statement such as “authentic” is not the same thing as documentation, and an attractive listing image is not a substitute for evidence.

Start with item-specific photographs
Ask for additional angles and close views of details that matter to the listing: the cartridge or disc, its label or markings, packaging, included paper materials, seals, and any serial or grading information the seller cites. If the sale is for a particular bundle, request images that make the included components clear. These requests help establish what is visibly present and what condition claims can reasonably be checked from images.

eBay’s counterfeit policy says a seller may list an item only if they are certain it is genuine and complies with the applicable policies. It names invoices, serial numbers, and grading reports as examples of documentation that may support authenticity claims. A buyer can ask whether the seller has relevant records and whether they connect to the item in the listing; the policy examples are not a guarantee that any one document proves authenticity in every case.
eBay’s separate art policy gives other examples of authenticity evidence, including receipts, exhibition materials, expert appraisals, auction catalogs, and archive photos or films. That is guidance for art listings, not a retro-game-specific authentication standard. It illustrates the broader point that evidence can take different forms, but should not be treated as a checklist that certifies games.
Interpret missing or inconsistent evidence carefully
If the seller cannot provide a requested photo or record, that fact alone does not establish that the item is counterfeit. It does mean a buyer has less information with which to assess the claim. If details in the photos conflict with the description, or documentation does not appear to relate to the offered object, ask for an explanation before deciding whether the remaining uncertainty is acceptable.

What do Etsy and eBay policies say about these listings?
The policies provide a platform-specific baseline: Etsy addresses AI disclosure and accurate listing images, while eBay’s cited rules address counterfeit goods and evidence supporting authenticity claims. Neither set of rules should be generalized as the law or policy of every marketplace.

For a game listing on eBay, the counterfeit policy is the relevant cited baseline: it says, “Counterfeit or fake items aren’t allowed on eBay,” and says sellers may list an item only if they are certain it is genuine and compliant with the policy and the Intellectual property policy. For Etsy, image accuracy and disclosure are separate considerations. A seller can disclose AI use and still need to represent the physical item accurately.
Does AI imagery prove a listing is fraudulent or a game is counterfeit?
No. An AI-generated image may be a disclosed illustration, and its presence alone does not establish that the physical game is counterfeit or that a seller intends to mislead. Conversely, an ordinary-looking photograph does not prove authenticity.
Assess the claim, the actual-item photos, the seller’s answers, and any relevant documentation together. A manipulated or misleading image can be a reason to seek clarification or avoid relying on the listing’s visual claims, but determining whether an item is genuine requires evidence about the item—not merely a judgment about the image-generation method.
Has AI already changed retro-game prices or collector trust?
The marketplace policies described here do not answer that. They establish rules and examples for disclosure, accurate representation, and authenticity evidence; they do not provide market measurements of AI listing prevalence, realized prices, fraud frequency, buyer confidence, or collector behavior.
It is reasonable to treat trustworthy representation as important to a purchase, particularly when condition and completeness affect what a buyer is choosing.
