AI frame generation (FG) on a phone creates an extra image between two frames the game has actually rendered. A neural network uses color, depth and motion data from those real frames to predict the scene at an intermediate moment. The display can therefore show more frames and smoother camera movement without asking the GPU to rasterize a complete scene for every displayed image.

That extra smoothness is not the same as higher game-simulation speed or lower latency. Qualcomm describes FG as adding one rendered frame’s worth of input latency, while Android’s thermal limits, battery capacity and display refresh rate remain unchanged. Artifacts are most likely when motion vectors or depth are wrong, objects appear from behind other objects, effects are transparent or particle-based, the camera cuts rapidly, or screen-space UI is fed into a model that cannot describe it correctly.

What is AI frame generation on a mobile GPU?

AI frame generation is a temporal image-synthesis stage placed between two genuinely rendered game frames. The game engine supplies information about what moved and how the scene is structured; a neural network estimates the missing in-between view and sends that synthetic image to the display.

It is different from simply rendering at a higher frame rate. A real render advances game simulation, samples new player input and produces a complete scene. A generated frame is an image prediction made from existing evidence, so it can improve perceived fluidity while leaving the underlying simulation rate unchanged.

How frame generation relates to upscaling

Mobile implementations often pair FG with neural super sampling (NSS), also called super resolution. NSS reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render. NFG, or neural frame generation, creates a new temporal sample between two renders. Samsung’s Exynos/Xclipse implementation, called Enhanced Neural Super Sampling (ENSS), combines both operations; either operation can also be used independently.

Super sampling changes the spatial detail of an image that already exists. Frame generation changes the time sequence by inserting an image that did not come directly from the renderer. Enabling both can reduce the amount of original rendering work and increase displayed smoothness, but each stage has its own compute cost and failure modes.

How does the frame-generation pipeline work?

The process is a sequence of render, infer, reconstruct and composite operations. The exact neural-network architecture differs by vendor, but the data flow is broadly consistent.

  1. Render a source frame. The game renders at its chosen internal resolution, which may be native or reduced for performance. Alongside the color image, the engine produces a depth buffer and motion vectors. Depth identifies the distance of surfaces from the camera; motion vectors describe where visible pixels or objects moved between frames.
  2. Collect temporal evidence. The frame-generation pass receives current and prior information. Qualcomm’s documented FG inputs include post-processed color buffers from frames N-1 and N, plus depth and motion vectors from frame N. Some systems also use optical-flow estimates or learned information about shading changes.
  3. Run the neural model on the GPU. The model analyzes the supplied buffers and predicts where surfaces should be at the intermediate time. Samsung says its NFG networks use rendering information including motion vectors and color buffers; its Shade Flow model also analyzes illumination changes, not only object movement.
  4. Warp and reconstruct the intermediate image. The predicted motion is used to reproject visible surfaces into their expected positions. The network fills areas that need newly synthesized detail and attempts to keep edges, lighting and textures temporally stable.
  5. Composite elements that lack scene data. Interface layers, captions and other screen-space elements often have no valid world-space depth or motion vectors. They should be rendered or composited separately rather than passed through the scene model as if they were geometry.
  6. Present real and generated frames with pacing. The display receives an alternating sequence of rendered and synthetic frames. Queue depth, synchronization and the display’s refresh interval determine whether that sequence looks even or develops judder.

Which inputs does a mobile frame-generation model need?

The quality of the prediction depends on the quality and timing of the renderer’s auxiliary buffers. A model cannot reliably infer information that the engine never recorded.

Input Purpose Typical failure when incorrect or absent
Color buffers Show the visible appearance of the previous and current scene, including textures and post-processing. Ghosting, stale detail or incorrect colors when the image history does not match the current scene.
Depth buffer Separates foreground and background surfaces and guides reprojection around occlusion boundaries. Surfaces can appear to smear through one another, especially when a previously hidden object is revealed.
Motion vectors Describe per-pixel or per-object movement so the model can place surfaces at the intermediate time. Warped geometry, trails and unstable edges during fast or nonlinear motion.
Optical flow or learned motion cues Provide an additional estimate of apparent image movement when engine vectors are incomplete. Ambiguous or rapidly changing regions remain difficult, particularly with particles and transparency.
Lighting or shading information Helps account for illumination changes that are not explained by object translation alone. Flickering or stale highlights when lighting changes abruptly.
UI and other screen-space layers Normally composited outside the scene model because they do not have valid world-space depth. Text and icons can warp, duplicate or leave trails if treated as scene geometry.

Qualcomm’s integration guidance explicitly excludes UI from super-resolution inputs for this reason. A game can still display a generated scene frame and then draw its interface at the final output resolution.

What do current mobile implementations actually provide?

Samsung describes a Vulkan zero-copy path intended to avoid unnecessary buffer copies between rendering and neural passes. Fewer copies can reduce memory traffic, but the benefit depends on how the game’s render graph and buffers are organized. Samsung reports that combining NSS and NFG achieved an average FPS-per-watt figure up to three times higher under the same power conditions. That is a vendor-reported result from its stated workload and device conditions, not an independent result that applies to every Exynos phone or game.

Qualcomm Adreno Neural Fusion

Qualcomm’s Adreno Neural Fusion exposes super resolution and frame generation as Adreno GPU compute dispatches. The current SDK documentation lists Android arm64-v8a, Vulkan, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 or newer, runtime support checks and a fallback path. A shipping game must verify support at runtime instead of assuming that a device name alone guarantees the feature.

Qualcomm’s documented contract uses post-processed color from frames N-1 and N together with depth and motion vectors from frame N. Developers are responsible for producing valid vectors, supplying depth in the expected format, pacing the generated output and compositing UI separately.

Mob-FGSR research for constrained mobile hardware

Mob-FGSR, presented at SIGGRAPH 2024, targets phones with limited GPU capability and no dedicated optical-flow hardware. Its authors measured 2.2 milliseconds for interpolation and 1.9 milliseconds for extrapolation at 720p on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in their experiments. Those are measurements on specified hardware, resolution and implementations; they are not a performance promise for another handset, game or operating point.

Implementation What the documentation or paper describes Important qualification
Samsung ENSS/NFG NSS plus NFG on Exynos/Xclipse; motion vectors, color, prior frames and Shade Flow lighting analysis; Vulkan zero-copy path. Samsung’s up-to-3× FPS/W result is vendor-reported and workload-specific.
Qualcomm Adreno Neural Fusion SR and FG as Adreno compute dispatches; Android arm64-v8a and Vulkan; support checks and fallback. Current SDK requirements list Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 or newer; integration still requires correct depth, vectors and UI handling.

Does generated FPS reduce input lag?

No. Frame generation can raise the number shown by an FPS counter or make camera motion look smoother, but it does not create an additional game-simulation step or an additional player-input sample for every synthetic image.

Qualcomm’s 22 September 2026 developer documentation describes FG as synthesizing an intermediate frame between two consecutively rendered frames and states that it comes at the cost of one additional rendered frame’s worth of input latency. In practical terms, a generated image must wait for the source frames and model work before it can be displayed. The rendered frame rate, queueing policy and display scanout still determine responsiveness.

Displayed FPS versus real-rendered FPS

Always separate three numbers:

  • Real-rendered FPS: how often the engine completes a genuine scene render and advances simulation.
  • Generated FPS: how many synthetic images the FG pass inserts.
  • Displayed FPS: the cadence presented to the panel after pacing and synchronization.

For example, a game could display a 120-frame-per-second sequence built from a lower real-render rate plus inserted images. The camera may appear smoother than the native sequence, while controls still feel closer to the lower real-render cadence and include the FG pipeline’s added delay. A higher displayed number is therefore not proof of lower latency.

When can FG still feel better?

If the native render rate is stable and the scene has coherent motion vectors, evenly spaced generated frames can reduce visible judder during camera pans. That is a presentation improvement, not a replacement for a high native rate in competitive controls. If the source rate is erratic, frame pacing or queue delays can outweigh the visual benefit.

Why does frame generation look bad in fast scenes?

Fast motion exposes the limits of temporal prediction because the model has less reliable evidence and less time to hide mistakes. The most common problems are not mysterious AI failures; they are cases where the required scene information is missing, ambiguous or changing nonlinearly.

Disocclusion and newly revealed surfaces

When the camera moves, a foreground object can uncover a background region that was absent from both source images. No motion vector can describe pixels that were never rendered. The model must invent that content, so edges may stretch, holes may shimmer or detail may briefly look soft.

Incorrect or incomplete motion vectors

Vectors generated only for rigid geometry may not describe skinned characters, reflections, particles or post-processing. A wrong vector sends the model in the wrong direction, producing doubled limbs, trails and bent geometry. Nonlinear movement, such as an abrupt animation change, is especially difficult for a method that interpolates between two temporal samples.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transparency, particles and visual effects

Smoke, hair, fire, rain and alpha-blended effects do not behave like opaque surfaces with one stable depth value. Their appearance can change because of blending, lighting and random animation, so the model may leave ghost images or flickering detail.

Rapid camera cuts and large lighting changes

A cut can make consecutive frames depict unrelated views. Likewise, a sudden flash or moving shadow changes color without corresponding object motion. Samsung notes limitations with complex scenes and nonlinear motion; its Shade Flow work addresses illumination changes but cannot guarantee a correct reconstruction for every effect.

UI and other screen-space graphics

Menus, crosshairs, subtitles and status bars are attached to the screen rather than the 3D world. They have no valid scene depth or object motion. If they enter the FG input as ordinary pixels, the model can smear or duplicate them. Rendering the UI after the generated scene avoids that class of artifact.

Can frame generation fix a slow or overheating phone?

It can reduce some rendering work, but it cannot remove the phone’s thermal envelope, battery limits or panel refresh ceiling. AI inference is another workload that must run within the same power and heat budget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens under sustained heat

Android documentation explains that high CPU or GPU utilization can heat a device until it downclocks. Once frequencies fall, the game’s real-render rate can decline and battery drain can increase. FG may delay that point by allowing a lower internal resolution or by using efficient GPU-local inference, but it cannot prevent throttling when the total workload exceeds the cooling system’s capacity.

Why a lower-resolution render can help

Rendering fewer pixels reduces raster and shading work. If the neural pass is efficient, the saved work can be spent on reconstruction while keeping power per delivered frame manageable. The result depends on the game, model and hardware; a heavy model or poorly integrated memory path can consume much of the savings.

The display still sets a hard ceiling

A 90 Hz panel can present at most 90 refreshes per second. Android’s 2020 guidance gives an application about 11.1 milliseconds for each 90 Hz frame, including rendering, neural work, composition and scheduling. Producing more images than the panel can scan out does not make motion beyond that refresh rate visible and can complicate pacing.

How should you compare mobile frame-generation implementations?

Do not compare products by a single displayed-FPS or FPS-per-watt headline. Measure the complete pipeline under the same game scene, resolution, refresh mode and thermal state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison question What to measure Why it matters
Are extra frames real or synthetic? Record native rendered FPS separately from generated and displayed FPS. A larger displayed number may hide an unchanged simulation rate.
How responsive is it? Measure input-to-photon latency or at least compare controlled camera and input response with FG off and on. FG carries the latency cost of waiting for source frames and synthesis.
How stable is image quality? Inspect fast pans, disocclusions, particles, transparency, lighting changes and camera cuts. These scenes reveal vector and depth failures that a static benchmark misses.
Does performance survive heat? Repeat the test after the device warms and note real FPS, displayed FPS, clocks and battery draw when available. Short runs can conceal throttling and changing power efficiency.
What hardware and API are covered? Check GPU generation, Android ABI, Vulkan support, runtime capability checks and fallback behavior. An unsupported device needs a clean native-render path rather than a broken effect.
What is the energy cost? Compare power per delivered frame, not only instantaneous FPS. A high displayed rate can still use more energy if neural inference outweighs raster savings.

Samsung’s up-to-three-times FPS/W figure and the Mob-FGSR millisecond figures illustrate why context matters: each number belongs to a named owner, workload, resolution, device and measurement method.

What do developers need to integrate frame generation correctly?

A reliable implementation is mostly an integration and scheduling problem. The neural model is only one component of the render graph.

  1. Verify capabilities at runtime. Query the vendor SDK and graphics API rather than relying on a marketing name. Qualcomm’s current documentation calls for Android arm64-v8a, Vulkan and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 or newer, with a fallback path for unsupported devices.
  2. Produce synchronized buffers. Ensure color, depth and motion vectors all describe the same frame and camera state. A one-frame mismatch can look like a model error even when inference is functioning.
  3. Define vector coverage. Include animated objects and relevant post-processing where the API permits it. Mark or handle regions that have no trustworthy motion rather than feeding fabricated vectors.
  4. Keep UI out of scene inference. Composite menus, text and other screen-space layers after the generated scene, as Qualcomm’s integration contract requires.
  5. Choose interpolation or extrapolation deliberately. Interpolation waits for the next real frame and generally has more complete evidence; extrapolation predicts beyond the latest frame and can react sooner but is more exposed to sudden direction changes. Mob-FGSR reports separate runtimes for these modes, showing that they are distinct workloads.
  6. Budget the full frame interval. At 90 Hz, the application has roughly 11.1 ms for rendering, neural dispatch, composition and synchronization. Exceeding that interval causes missed refreshes even if an isolated neural-kernel benchmark looks fast.
  7. Provide an explicit fallback. If support checks fail, vectors are unavailable or artifact quality is unacceptable, disable FG and continue with native rendering or super resolution alone. A deterministic fallback is better than presenting corrupted UI or unstable frames.
  8. Test after heat buildup. Validate frame pacing and real-render FPS over sustained play, not only during a cool-start benchmark. Record behavior as clocks change and the device approaches its thermal limit.

How can a player test whether frame generation helps?

Use a controlled before-and-after test instead of trusting the largest on-screen FPS number.

  1. Establish a native baseline. Record the game’s internal resolution, refresh mode, real-render FPS, frame-time graph and input settings with FG disabled.
  2. Enable only the intended features. Test super resolution and frame generation separately before combining them, so a visual change can be attributed to the correct stage.
  3. Repeat the same workload. Use a repeatable route containing a camera pan, fast traversal, transparency or particles, a lighting change and a UI-heavy moment.
  4. Watch frame time, not just FPS. Evenly spaced frames usually look better than a higher average with irregular gaps. Compare the real-render rate and displayed rate independently.
  5. Check controls during motion. Rotate the camera, aim or steer through the same sequence with FG off and on. Note whether the smoother image is worth the delayed response.
  6. Re-test when warm. A feature that looks excellent for a short session may lose its advantage after thermal throttling lowers the source render rate.
  7. Keep the setting that matches the game. Slow, predictable scenes with stable vectors are better candidates than competitive play with rapid cuts, heavy particles or strict latency requirements.

What do the published performance figures really mean?

Published figures are useful when their conditions travel with them. They should not be converted into universal promises.

  • Samsung, 2026: ENSS combining NSS and NFG is reported to reach an average FPS-per-watt improvement of up to 3× under the same power conditions. This is a Samsung technical-article result, not an independent cross-device benchmark.
  • Mob-FGSR, SIGGRAPH 2024: the paper reports 2.2 ms interpolation and 1.9 ms extrapolation at 720p on Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in its experiments. Resolution, model, implementation and hardware are all part of those measurements.
  • Android Developers, 2020: a 90 Hz display gives an application approximately 11.1 ms per frame. That budget applies to the entire application pipeline, not only the neural kernel.
  • Qualcomm Developer Network, 22 September 2026: its documentation defines FG as synthesizing an intermediate frame between two consecutively rendered frames and notes the additional rendered-frame input-latency cost.

The practical question is therefore not whether a phone can claim a high generated FPS. It is whether the implementation delivers stable pacing, acceptable artifacts, responsive controls and sustainable power use for the specific game and thermal state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AI frame generation work without an optical-flow accelerator?

Yes. Mob-FGSR was designed for mobile devices without dedicated optical-flow hardware and uses color, depth and motion information in its approach. Other implementations may add optical-flow estimates, but dedicated optical-flow hardware is not a universal prerequisite.

Is neural super resolution the same as frame generation?

No. Super resolution reconstructs more spatial detail from one lower-resolution render, while frame generation synthesizes an additional point in time between renders. They can be enabled together, as in Samsung’s ENSS design, but they solve different problems.

Why does a game’s HUD distort while the 3D scene looks fine?

HUD elements are screen-space graphics and normally have no world-space depth or motion vectors. If they are included in the scene-model inputs instead of composited afterward, the model can treat text or icons like moving geometry and produce trails or duplicates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can frame generation save battery during a long gaming session?

It can lower raster work enough to improve energy per delivered frame in some workloads, but neural inference and memory traffic also consume power. The net result must be measured on the particular phone after sustained heat buildup rather than inferred from displayed FPS alone.

What should happen when a phone does not support the required API or GPU?

A game should detect support at runtime and use a fallback, such as native rendering or a compatible super-resolution path. Qualcomm’s SDK documentation specifically calls for runtime checks and fallback behavior instead of assuming every Android device is compatible.
