AI companion memory is not one feature or one database. An app may keep an editable list of facts, build an internal summary from past conversations, infer preferences from patterns, or simply retain chat transcripts that can be searched later. Turning a memory switch off usually changes future personalization; it does not automatically erase every copy of a fact. To remove information reliably, identify every place it may exist—saved memories, chats, uploaded files, and connected apps—then delete each record using that service’s controls. Retention also differs: Snapchat documents up to 30 days for deleting My AI data, while OpenAI documents up to 30 days for logs of deleted memories used for safety and debugging.
What does an AI companion actually mean by “memory”?
“Memory” can describe several different systems operating at once. The product name alone does not tell you which one you are using, so start by separating these layers.

Explicit saved memories
An explicit memory is a distinct record such as your name, city, allergy, favorite food, or communication preference. You may be able to view, edit, or delete each item. Pi describes this model directly: it aims to remember details likely to remain true for a long time, including family members, hobbies, work or study, goals, routines, and habits. You can tell Pi to remember or forget a detail and manage entries under Settings > Account > Manage Memories.
Replika also exposes a Memory area where users can add memories manually. Its help material says its memory is “built on layers,” meaning the visible list is only part of what can influence a reply.

Conversation-derived summaries and patterns
Some companions create an automatically updated summary of your conversations or use recurring patterns without showing every inference as a separate item. A system might learn that you prefer brief answers because you repeatedly ask for them, even if you never saved a memory saying so. Deleting one visible fact therefore may not remove every related pattern.
Chat history that is not a memory feature
A transcript is a record of what was said. An app can retain that transcript for its own data controls even if it does not claim to remember personal details across conversations. Snapchat’s documentation illustrates the distinction: it stores conversations with My AI but says My AI will not remember details from prior conversations over time. Stored conversations can still be deleted through Snapchat’s My AI data controls.

A fact can also survive in an uploaded document or a connected application. For example, a calendar, drive, or other connected source may contain the same information that appeared in a chat. Google’s guidance says deleting chats and disconnecting a connected app may both be necessary. Treat each source as a separate record until the service confirms otherwise.
Why doesn’t deleting a chat always erase what the companion knows?
A chat transcript and a saved memory can be separate records. OpenAI’s help documentation says saved memories are stored separately from chats; deleting a conversation therefore does not necessarily delete a memory extracted from it. Microsoft likewise distinguishes stored memories from the setting that controls whether they are used.
The reverse can also happen. Removing a saved-memory entry may stop a particular personalization while leaving the original sentence in a retained transcript, uploaded file, or connected account. If the assistant continues to mention the fact, check all of those sources rather than assuming the delete command failed.
How do the major companion services handle memory?
The following comparison uses each service’s published description. “Not stated” means the cited help material does not establish that behavior; it is not evidence that the feature is absent.

Controls can vary by subscription, region, platform, account type, and workspace. OpenAI explicitly lists those variables, and similar differences are possible elsewhere; use the controls shown in your own account rather than relying on a screenshot from another edition.
How can I see what an AI companion remembers about me?
Begin with a direct question, then verify the answer in the dedicated settings area. A conversational answer is useful, but it is not a complete inventory when the service has hidden summaries or separate data stores.
- Ask in the chat. Use a prompt such as “What do you remember about me?” where the service supports it. Replika documents this kind of request, and Pi supports direct remember and forget commands.
- Open the memory control. Look for labels such as Memory, Personalization, Manage Memories, or a memory portal. Replika exposes a Memory screen; Pi uses Settings > Account > Manage Memories; ChatGPT places its controls under Settings > Personalization > Memory; Microsoft provides a memory portal.
- Check the chat list and archives. A fact may still be present in a transcript even after a memory entry is removed. Review archived conversations if the service has a separate archive view.
- Review files and connected apps. Look for uploaded documents and integrations that could contain the same name, address, schedule, health detail, or preference.
- Record the exact wording before editing. Save a private note of the item and where you found it. This makes it easier to test whether the assistant is still using an old source after deletion.
How do I make an AI companion forget one detail?
Delete the specific memory first, then remove the material from which it could have been derived. A natural-language request such as “Forget that I work at …” may change future behavior, but use the app’s management screen as the authoritative confirmation when one exists.
- Identify the fact precisely. Distinguish “I moved to Bristol last year” from a broader profile such as your current city, workplace, and travel history. Delete each related item that you no longer want used.
- Use the dedicated delete control. In Pi, open Settings > Account > Manage Memories. In Replika, open the Memory screen. In ChatGPT, use the memory controls under Settings > Personalization > Memory. Microsoft’s memory portal provides the corresponding management interface.
- Remove the source chat. If the fact appears in a conversation, delete that conversation according to the service’s chat controls. Do not assume that deleting a memory entry also removes the transcript.
- Delete or replace uploaded files. Remove a document containing the detail, or upload a corrected version only after deleting the old file if the service keeps file records separately.
- Disconnect and clean connected apps. Google’s guidance indicates that disconnecting an integration and deleting related chat data may both be needed. Also remove the source record in the connected service when appropriate.
- Test with a neutral prompt. Start a new conversation and ask a question that would reveal the old fact without repeating it. If the assistant still uses it, search for another source or allow the documented deletion window to pass before testing again.
Pi notes that negative feedback does not itself delete a memory. A thumbs-down can signal that a response was wrong, but it is not a substitute for removing the corresponding memory item.
What happens when I turn memory off?
Turning memory off generally prevents future personalization from the feature; it is not a universal erase button. Microsoft states explicitly that turning Memory off does not delete stored memories. OpenAI likewise separates disabling memory from deleting saved memories and the chats or files that supplied them.
Use the switch when you want to stop a feature from consulting stored memories while you decide what to delete. If your goal is removal, continue through the memory list, source chats, files, and connected-app controls. The exact label may be Memory, Personalization, or a similar term, and the setting may not be available on every plan, platform, region, or workspace.

Why does the app still know something I deleted?
Persistent recall after a deletion request has several possible explanations. Work through them in order instead of repeatedly sending “forget” messages.
The visible item was only one layer
Replika describes a visible Memory layer and a deeper system that uses conversation patterns. Removing an entry from the visible list may not erase a pattern inferred from other conversations. Ask what the service can list, then inspect the underlying chats.

The source transcript remains
A saved memory may be gone while the original conversation remains available to the system. Delete the relevant chat, including an archived copy if the product has one.
A file or integration contains the same fact
An uploaded résumé, note, calendar event, or connected account can reintroduce information. Remove the file and disconnect or clean the integration, following the service’s separate controls.
Deletion is still processing
Server-side removal is not always instantaneous. Snapchat documents up to 30 days for deleting relevant My AI data from its servers. OpenAI documents up to 30 days for retaining logs of deleted saved memories used for safety and debugging. These periods describe the respective services; do not apply them automatically to another app.
You are testing the wrong account or workspace
Memory controls can differ between personal and work accounts, devices, plans, and regions. Confirm the account identifier and workspace before concluding that a deletion was ignored.

How long does deletion take, and what can remain temporarily?
Deletion has at least two stages: removing the item from normal product use and removing backend copies or logs according to the service’s retention policy. A service may stop using a memory before every safety, debugging, or backup record has expired.
- Snapchat My AI: Snapchat’s 2026 help documentation says deletion of relevant data from its servers can take up to 30 days.
- OpenAI saved memories: OpenAI says logs of deleted memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.
- Other services: The cited Replika, Pi, Microsoft, and Google materials do not state one universal deletion period. Check the current account-specific notice rather than assuming a 30-day rule.
During a stated window, avoid re-entering the same sensitive detail in new chats; doing so can create a fresh source record and make testing ambiguous.
What is the safest workflow for sensitive personal information?
Use a source-by-source checklist before and after sharing information that could harm you if exposed, such as health details, precise location, financial data, passwords, or workplace-confidential material.
- Minimize first. Share only the detail needed for the task, and use a general description when an exact identifier is unnecessary.
- Inspect before trusting. Find the memory and personalization controls before relying on the companion for ongoing support.
- Separate temporary help from long-term context. If the app offers a mode that does not save a conversation, read its current description carefully; do not infer that behavior from another service.
- Correct rather than stack duplicates. If a fact changes, edit or delete the old item instead of adding a second contradictory memory.
- Clean every source when leaving. Remove memories, chats, files, and connected-app records that contain the information.
- Document the request. Keep the date, account, and controls used so you can follow up if the service publishes a retention period.
When should I delete the entire account?
Account deletion is the broadest option and should be reserved for cases where removing individual records is impractical or you are leaving the service. Replika says account deletion permanently erases all data and cannot be undone. That is materially different from turning off memory or deleting one conversation, so export anything you are legally or practically entitled to keep before confirming the final action.

A companion’s statement about what it remembers is not a certified data inventory. The official materials cited for these services do not provide a cross-service prevalence statistic or an independent benchmark of memory accuracy. Treat a confident answer as a clue, then verify it against the app’s memory screen, chat history, files, and integrations.
Memory can also be wrong or outdated. Delete stale facts explicitly, and do not rely on a thumbs-up or thumbs-down signal alone to correct the underlying record. For consequential decisions—medical, legal, financial, or safety-related—check the original source rather than trusting remembered context.
