AI companies find human data labelers through two main routes: direct contract job postings for specific work, and contributor platforms or data vendors that build pools of applicants and match them to projects. Applicants may submit a profile, verify identity, show relevant experience, complete training or an assessment, and then wait for a project match. None of those steps necessarily guarantees paid work: the requirements, assignment availability, and terms depend on the particular role and project.
How do AI companies hire data labelers?
There is no single hiring pipeline. A company or vendor may advertise a defined contract role, while a platform may collect contributor profiles and invite or match eligible people to jobs. In either case, “recruiting” can mean screening people for a pool rather than offering an immediate, continuing job.

Direct contract listings
A direct listing describes a particular project or contractor role, often with its own location, schedule, task description, and qualifications. For example, a Cohere posting for a remote, part-time contractor in Canada describes comparing and ranking model outputs, explaining those judgments, stress-testing model behavior, creating datasets, and applying or helping develop rubrics. That posting specifies a 16-hour weekly commitment and CAD $30 per hour. These are terms from one posting, not a general rate or guarantee that the opening remains available.
A Legion Intelligence listing describes labeling and curating scanned text and images. It emphasizes accuracy, consistency, attention to detail, and following instructions; it requires a laptop and reliable internet and says special hardware is not required. The listing gave a $20 hourly rate, 15 hours per week, and an initial five-week contract. It was crawled about a year before October 25, 2026, so its pay and availability are dated examples rather than current offers.

Contributor platforms and vendor pools
Other routes begin with a worker profile rather than a single advertised position. HumanSignal describes account creation, email verification, entering skills and languages, identity verification, and project matching based on skills, location, and project requirements. OpenTrain AI describes a marketplace model in which employers post jobs and review candidates while labelers create profiles and apply.
Handshake’s contractor agreement describes registration and expertise information, possible learning materials, an initial task to demonstrate expertise, and additional onboarding for individual projects. It says explicitly that completing onboarding and an initial task does not guarantee participation in a project. In its words: “Successful completion of the onboarding process, including reviewing the learning and development materials and successfully completing an initial Task does not guarantee that you will be offered the opportunity to participate in any Projects.”
What kind of work do human data labelers do?
The job title can cover much more than attaching a short tag to an example. The precise task depends on the dataset, model, project instructions, and the expertise required.
Labeling and curation
Some work involves labeling or organizing text, images, scanned material, or other media. Workers may need to apply a project’s categories consistently, follow detailed rules, and curate examples. A listing may prioritize careful execution over specialized AI knowledge, but applicants should read the actual instructions rather than assume every labeling job is interchangeable.
Reviewing and evaluating model outputs
Other roles ask contributors to compare possible answers, rank outputs, judge their quality, or write reasons for a judgment. The Cohere posting also includes stress-testing model behavior and creating datasets or rubrics. Terac’s listing describes labeling text or media and evaluating AI responses, and seeks applicants with prior annotation or model-evaluation experience.
These evaluation tasks can require a worker to make a reasoned judgment rather than identify an objectively obvious label. Depending on the role, relevant criteria may include accuracy, helpfulness, tone, or safety. Some positions may involve developing examples or quality criteria as well as applying them.
What qualifications do employers look for?
Across the examples, reliable work habits and the ability to follow detailed instructions recur. Prior experience matters for some roles, but the listings do not establish a universal credential or experience requirement for the field.

Commonly requested abilities
- Attention to detail, accuracy, and consistency when applying a rubric.
- Ability to understand and follow project-specific guidelines.
- Reliable, independent work habits.
- Clear written explanations when a task asks for reasons behind a rating.
Specialist evaluation may call for more than careful labeling: the Cohere and Terac examples include model-output evaluation, and Terac specifically seeks prior annotation or model-evaluation experience. Aelven’s project-based contributor listing, by contrast, says no prior AI experience is required for that opportunity; its projects may involve using AI tools, carrying out activities, or providing feedback. This contrast is why a blanket claim such as “you need experience” or “no experience is needed” would mislead applicants.
What does the recruitment and screening process involve?
Screening varies by platform and project. A process can involve profile review, skill or language information, identity or background checks, training, or a qualification task; not every applicant should expect every step.
- Find the original route. Start with the company’s or platform’s own job page or sign-up flow. Check that the listing identifies the work source and project, rather than relying on an unsolicited message.
- Review eligibility and task details. Confirm location, task type, required skills, schedule, equipment, contractor status, pay basis, and any stated project duration. Those terms belong to the specific listing, not to “data labeling” as a whole.
- Complete the profile or application accurately. Platforms may request skills, languages, expertise, or work history to determine potential project fit. HumanSignal describes identity verification and matching that considers location and project requirements.
- Complete any screening step with its terms in mind. A platform or employer may provide learning materials, an annotation exercise, or an initial task. Ask whether that task is paid and what data or work product it involves; the reviewed examples do not establish a universal payment rule for assessments.
- Wait for a project decision, not just an intake result. A successful assessment can qualify someone for consideration without creating an assignment. Handshake’s agreement states this directly, and TIME’s reporting describes workers’ varied experiences with assessments and uncertain task access.
AI recruitment technology is broader than recruiting labelers. The OECD discusses uses such as CV parsing, candidate ranking, chatbots, and automated assessments in recruitment and labor-market matching. That context does not establish that all AI companies use those tools to recruit data labelers.

Where can you find AI data annotation jobs?
Use both direct listings and contributor-platform routes, while checking whether a page represents a specific opening or simply invites applicants into a pool.
- Company or vendor postings: Look for roles with a defined task, location eligibility, work arrangement, and terms. A direct posting can be easier to assess because it may state expected hours, duration, or pay.
- Contributor platforms: Review how profiles are used, what verification is required, how project matching works, and whether joining the platform is separate from being offered work.
- Project listings: Read the project-specific qualifications and onboarding instructions rather than inferring them from the platform’s general sign-up page.
Before sharing sensitive information, use the official sign-up route and verify that you are communicating with the named company or platform. DataAnnotation advises applicants to use its official sign-up flow, says it will not ask applicants to pay, and cautions against unverified outreach or providing financial information outside the logged-in platform. That is the platform’s own safety guidance, not an independent finding about every service.
How should you compare two opportunities?
Compare the actual offer details, not just the job title or advertised hourly amount. A platform-pool invitation and a defined short contract can have very different prospects for immediate work and continuity.
| What to compare | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Work source | Is this a direct employer posting, a vendor role, a marketplace job, or registration for possible matching? |
| Selection steps | Does it require experience, identity or background verification, an assessment, training, or project onboarding? |
| Task and expertise | Is the work basic labeling, quality review, ranking, model evaluation, dataset creation, or specialist judgment? |
| Terms | Is the role described as employment, contract work, or project-based work? What location, pay basis, hours, payment terms, and duration are stated? |
| Continuity | Does the listing describe a defined assignment, or only possible future matching? Does onboarding promise a project offer? |
| Equipment and data handling | What device or software is required? What personal information is collected, and what project-specific privacy or safety terms apply? |
Do not treat a stated hourly rate as a prediction of earnings across the industry. The examples reviewed are individual advertisements, not representative wage statistics. Likewise, remote work does not necessarily mean open to applicants everywhere: the Cohere example is Canada-only, while the Legion listing is a U.S. contract example.

What equipment and work arrangement should you expect?
The documented postings support a modest baseline, not a recommendation to buy specialized hardware. Legion requires a laptop and reliable internet and says special hardware is not needed; Cohere describes its role as bring-your-own-device. Requirements may differ for another project, so use its own listing rather than assuming a particular computer specification.
The examples include remote, part-time, independent-contractor, and project-based arrangements. Those labels do not tell you whether work will continue after the stated project or whether additional projects will be available. Check the duration, expected hours, payment terms, and whether an assignment is actually being offered before treating a contributor profile as a job.
What should applicants be cautious about?
The main practical risk is confusing eligibility or onboarding with a confirmed paid assignment. A platform may collect contributors because future projects need different skills or locations, and a qualification exercise may be only one step in deciding who can be considered.
- Verify the listing through an official company or platform route before submitting information.
- Do not pay an application fee unless you have independently established why it is legitimate; DataAnnotation states that it will not ask applicants to pay.
- Clarify whether assessments and training are paid, and what the project expects you to submit.
- Read the agreement for privacy, payment, contractor, and project-specific terms before accepting work.
- Do not assume that an advertised rate, location, schedule, or opening remains current. Job terms and task availability can change.
There is no reliable topic-specific total established for how many human data labelers AI companies recruit, nor do these examples establish a typical wage or how often each screening practice occurs. TIME’s reporting includes individual worker accounts and broader estimates about online labor platforms, but those broader figures do not count data annotation workers specifically and should not be presented as the size of this workforce.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an AI data-labeling assessment paid?
There is no universal answer established across platforms. Before starting, look for a written statement covering compensation, expected time, and how the submitted work may be used; if those terms are unclear, ask the platform or employer before completing the task.
Can I do AI data-labeling work from any country?
No universal worldwide eligibility rule is established. A remote role can still be limited by country, as shown by the Canada-only Cohere posting, so confirm the eligible location on the specific listing.
How many human data labelers do AI companies employ?
The available examples do not establish a reliable industry-wide headcount. Broad estimates for online platform labor cannot be substituted for a count of data annotation workers.
Does data-labeling work require a degree?
The reviewed postings do not establish a uniform degree requirement. Requirements are described in terms of task skills and experience, and the Aelven listing is an example of a project-based opportunity that says prior AI experience is not required.
