AI checkout systems do not identify a product from a vague sentence alone. They match your request against structured catalog data, retrieve current price and inventory, verify shipping and taxes, then submit a limited, authenticated payment instruction through the merchant’s checkout or payment provider. In designs from OpenAI, Shopify, Visa and Google, the agent acts as a shopping and consent interface; the merchant still controls its catalog, order acceptance, payment processing, tax, fulfillment and refunds.
The practical result is a chain of checks rather than a single “buy” command: interpret intent, select an eligible offer, confirm the final amount, obtain authorization, and use a constrained payment token. Availability depends on the merchant, country, language, payment network and the particular checkout integration.

What is an AI checkout system?
An AI checkout system is software that can search products, assemble a cart and help complete payment on a shopper’s behalf. It may operate through an application programming interface (API), a controlled browser session, or a handoff to the merchant’s normal checkout page.
Visa describes the experience as one in which “AI agents can help you find what you want, check out for you or even handle the order from start to finish.” The agent is not a replacement for the store’s commerce stack. It orchestrates conversation and actions while the merchant and its payment service provider remain responsible for the transaction.

How does an AI know which product I mean?
Recognition begins with machine-readable catalog records, not with the model guessing from a product name. A participating merchant supplies regularly refreshed CSV or JSON data containing identifiers, descriptions, prices, inventory, images or other media, and fulfillment choices. Shopify likewise distributes eligible catalog information to supported AI channels.
1. The agent turns your words into attributes
Suppose you ask for a waterproof black jacket under a stated budget in a particular size. The system converts those constraints into fields such as color, material or feature, size, maximum price and intended use. It can also account for delivery location, seller restrictions and whether you want a single item or a bundle.
2. It matches attributes to catalog records
Each candidate is tied to a merchant identifier, variant identifier or stock-keeping unit. That lets the agent distinguish two colors, sizes or package quantities that share almost the same marketing title. Attribute completeness matters: a feed that omits measurements, compatibility, variant stock or shipping rules gives the agent less reliable choices.
3. It requests live details before purchase
Catalog feeds are starting points, not permanent proof that an item can be bought. Before payment, the agent asks the merchant for current availability and checkout data. A product can therefore disappear, change price, become restricted in your location or lose a delivery option between the first recommendation and the final confirmation.
How does the system verify price, stock and delivery?
The verification stage builds the offer you would actually pay for. Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol describes an initial browsing interaction that retrieves product details, availability, location restrictions, taxes, shipping and final cost, followed by a separate payment interaction.
- Availability: The merchant confirms that the selected variant can be reserved or purchased, rather than relying on an older feed entry.
- Location rules: The system checks whether the item may be sold or shipped to your address and region.
- Taxes and shipping: The checkout calculation adds applicable charges and presents the resulting total before authorization.
- Fulfillment: Delivery methods, pickup choices or other merchant-supported options are returned as part of the offer.
- Final amount: The amount sent for approval is the verified total, not merely the advertised item price.
If any of these values change, a trustworthy flow should pause and ask you to approve the updated cart instead of silently charging a different amount.

Does an AI agent use the merchant’s checkout?
Yes. The exact handoff depends on the merchant’s integration and your eligibility.
Merchant checkout handoff
OpenAI describes checkout sessions that a merchant validates and then accepts or declines. In a handoff model, the agent creates or prepares the cart and sends you to a merchant-controlled checkout URL. You finish on the store’s page, where its normal tax, shipping, fraud and order systems apply.
Embedded or direct checkout
Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) can let an agent iterate on a cart, follow a continue_url to merchant checkout, or call checkout tools such as get_checkout, update_checkout and complete_checkout when the store and channel are eligible. Direct completion reduces page switching, but it does not remove the merchant’s validation step.
Controlled browser interaction
Some systems navigate a browser under strict controls. The agent can read the page and fill permitted fields, while the checkout site remains the authority for the order. Browser automation is more sensitive to page changes and should require a clear confirmation immediately before the charge.
How are the agent and shopper authenticated?
Authentication answers two different questions: “Is this an approved agent?” and “Which consumer and device authorized this action?” Visa’s protocol uses cryptographic agent-recognition signatures linked with consumer and device identity data. That linkage helps a merchant distinguish an authorized shopping agent from an unknown script.
Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) uses signed Checkout Mandates and Payment Mandates assembled by a Shopping Agent. The merchant and payment processor verify those signed instructions before accepting the transaction. A mandate can record what the shopper authorized, reducing ambiguity about the item, amount and conditions.

These controls do not mean every AI purchase is automatically approved. A merchant can decline a request, require a fresh login or ask for an additional confirmation when risk signals, account settings or local rules demand it.
Is my card number exposed to the AI?
In the payment designs described by OpenAI, Visa and Google, the agent is intended to use constrained credentials rather than receive an unrestricted copy of your card number. OpenAI’s Delegated Payment Specification sends a one-time payment request containing a maximum charge and an expiry to a trusted payment service provider (PSP); the PSP returns a payment token. Visa documents tokenization, and Google says its agentic checkout encrypts saved Google Pay payment information.
That architecture limits what a compromised or misbehaving agent could do: a token can be scoped to one transaction, a defined amount and a short validity period. It does not make the transaction anonymous. The merchant and PSP still process the order, and your payment provider may retain the normal records required for fraud prevention, accounting and dispute handling.
What to check before approving
- The merchant name and domain shown in the checkout or confirmation screen.
- The exact item, variant, quantity and total amount.
- The payment method and delivery address selected.
- Any expiry, maximum-charge or one-time-use limits on the authorization.
- Whether the action is a purchase, a reservation or merely a cart update.
Who is responsible after the purchase?
The merchant remains the merchant of record in the models described by OpenAI and Shopify. Its systems, together with its PSP, handle transaction processing, tax calculation, inventory allocation, fulfillment, cancellation, refunds and customer-service obligations. The AI interface does not become the seller simply because it initiated the order.
This distinction matters when something goes wrong. If tracking is missing, an item is defective or a refund is needed, the order confirmation should identify the merchant that accepted the transaction and the payment method used. The agent may help locate an order or submit a request, but the merchant’s policies and support channels govern the outcome.
How do the main agentic-commerce designs differ?
The systems share the same broad sequence but make different choices about data, checkout location, identity and payment.

Where is AI checkout available?
Availability is narrower than the phrase “AI shopping” suggests. Google’s help documentation says Agentic checkout is currently available only in the United States and Australia, in English, for select merchants that accept Google Pay, with a valid saved payment method and address. A user outside those conditions may still receive product recommendations but not an agent-completed purchase.
Shopify says channel support and direct checkout are rolling out and depend on store eligibility and channel settings. A merchant can therefore expose its catalog to an AI channel while withholding direct completion, requiring a conventional checkout handoff instead.
Visa reported a 4,700% surge in AI-driven traffic to U.S. retail sites in its October 14, 2025 Trusted Agent Protocol release. That figure describes traffic growth reported by Visa, not a guarantee that 4,700% more orders were completed by agents.
What does an AI purchase look like step by step?
- State the goal and constraints. Give the agent the product type, required attributes, budget, quantity, delivery location and deadline. Mention exclusions such as refurbished goods or incompatible sizes.
- Review candidate products. Check the title, variant, seller and key specifications. Ask the agent to identify which catalog attributes satisfied your request.
- Request a live offer. The system should refresh stock, price, taxes, shipping and location eligibility before adding the item to a payable checkout.
- Inspect the cart. Confirm quantity, variant, delivery address, fulfillment method and the complete total.
- Authorize the action. Approve the specific checkout mandate or confirmation request. Do not treat a general instruction such as “find one” as permission to charge an unspecified amount.
- Let the merchant and PSP process payment. A constrained token or encrypted wallet credential is sent through the approved payment flow; the merchant validates and accepts or declines the transaction.
- Save the merchant confirmation. Keep the order number, merchant identity, total and refund terms. Those details are needed for support even if the agent remains available.
What can go wrong, and how should you recover?
The recommendation is the wrong variant
Ask for the exact identifier, size, color or package quantity and have the agent re-query the catalog. Do not authorize until the variant shown in the final checkout matches your request.

Treat the updated total as a new offer. Require a fresh confirmation; a previous approval should not be assumed to cover a changed amount.
The item becomes unavailable
Ask whether the merchant can back-order, substitute or remove the item. A trustworthy system should report the failure rather than silently selecting a different product.
The merchant declines the session
Use the merchant’s normal website or support channel. A decline can result from inventory, fraud screening, location restrictions or an integration rule and does not necessarily indicate a payment failure.
You do not recognize the charge
Compare the merchant name and order number in the confirmation with your payment statement. If they do not match, contact the payment provider promptly and use the merchant’s dispute or refund process.

Shoppers should expect a visible final total, a specific confirmation step, a recognizable merchant, an understandable record of what was authorized and a payment credential limited in amount or duration. Merchants should maintain accurate feeds, validate every checkout server-side, apply ordinary fraud and tax controls, and preserve a clear support path after an agent interaction.
AI checkout is therefore best understood as an authenticated orchestration layer. Its reliability depends less on conversational fluency than on fresh catalog attributes, live offer verification, signed identity signals, constrained payment tokens and a merchant that remains accountable for the order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent buy something without asking me first?
That depends on the permissions you grant and the merchant’s integration. A properly designed flow separates searching or cart building from payment authorization and uses a mandate, confirmation or other recorded consent before charging.
What happens if two stores sell nearly identical products?
The agent should compare merchant identifiers, variant attributes, delivery terms and the final landed cost rather than matching only the product title. If catalog fields are incomplete, ask it to show the exact seller and specifications before choosing.

Can I return an item purchased by an AI agent?
Returns normally follow the merchant’s published policy because the merchant remains the seller of record. Use the order number from the confirmation and contact that merchant, even if the agent helped submit the request.
Why can I see AI product results but not an AI checkout button?
Discovery and payment are separate capabilities. Your country, language, saved payment method, address, merchant eligibility or channel settings may support catalog access while excluding direct checkout.
