AI agents are billed for the model work performed across an entire run, not merely for the text you see at the end. A single request can trigger several model calls, and each call may resend instructions, conversation history, tool definitions, files, and tool results. The bill therefore depends on input, cached-input, and output tokens for every call, plus any applicable tool, compute, runtime, third-party, retry, or delegated-agent charges.

Tokens are model-specific pieces of text rather than whole words. A token can be a word fragment, punctuation mark, or other encoded unit, and the count changes with language and encoding. To estimate a run, total the token categories for all calls, apply the selected model’s current rates, then add non-model charges shown by your provider.

What is a token, and why is it not the same as a word?

A token is the unit a language model uses to read and generate text. Depending on the model’s tokenizer, one token might represent a short word, part of a long word, a space-plus-word pattern, a number, or punctuation. Code, JSON, markup, and languages other than English can split into tokens differently from ordinary prose.

That is why word-count estimates are unreliable for billing. Two prompts with the same number of words can produce different token totals, and the same text can have different counts when sent to different models. Count tokens with the tokenizer or usage report for the model you actually call, rather than applying a universal words-to-tokens conversion.

Input tokens

Input tokens are the material supplied to a model call. They can include your instructions, the user’s message, conversation history, retrieved documents, uploaded files, tool definitions, and results returned by earlier tools. In an agent, the input at step four may be much larger than the original request because it carries the accumulated task state.

Output tokens

Output tokens are generated by the model. They include the visible answer and, where the provider exposes or bills them, hidden reasoning tokens used to reach that answer. OpenAI’s token guidance states that reasoning tokens count toward billed output usage; other providers can expose or price these categories differently.

Cached input tokens

Some providers identify a repeated prefix of input as cached input. Those tokens can use a lower rate than new input, but only when the model and request qualify under that provider’s cache rules. Cache eligibility, minimum lengths, read and write charges, expiration, and discounts are provider- and model-specific.

How does an agent turn one request into multiple model calls?

An agent is usually a control loop: the model decides what to do, a runtime executes a tool or other action, the result is returned to the model, and the model decides the next action. Each model decision is a separate call unless a particular product combines steps internally.

  1. Planning call: the model interprets the goal and chooses a plan or first tool.
  2. Tool call: the runtime invokes a search, database, browser, code interpreter, or business API.
  3. Observation call: the tool result, often with the previous context, is sent back to the model.
  4. Follow-up calls: the model may request more tools, ask a subagent to work, revise an output, or retry after an error.
  5. Final response call: the model formats the result for the user.

The visible answer is usually only the last output. Earlier planning, tool-selection, correction, and summarization calls still consume tokens. A delegated subagent can add its own sequence of calls, and its usage may be aggregated into the parent run or reported separately.

What content is counted on each agent call?

For cost analysis, inspect every call rather than only the initial prompt and final response. The following categories commonly appear in usage records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Content sent or generated How it affects usage Typical reason it grows
System and developer instructions Input tokens on each call that includes them Large policies, examples, or repeated rules
User request and conversation history Input tokens, often resent as context Long chats, pasted drafts, or many turns
Tool definitions and schemas Input tokens before the model can select a tool Many tools, verbose parameter descriptions, nested schemas
Files and retrieved passages Input tokens when included directly or after extraction Large documents, duplicated passages, broad retrieval
Tool results Input tokens on the next model call Unfiltered logs, HTML, search results, database rows
Model response, including billable reasoning where applicable Output tokens Complex planning, long explanations, retries, or verbose formats

A runtime may summarize or trim context between steps, but that behavior is product-specific. Do not assume that a persistent session means the provider receives no repeated input; inspect the request and usage fields.

How do I estimate the model portion of an agent’s cost?

Use a per-call inventory and the provider’s current rate card. The conceptual calculation is:

estimated model cost = uncached input tokens × input rate + cached input tokens × cached-input rate + output tokens × output rate

Apply the rates for the exact model, region, endpoint, and feature you use. Some rate cards use different units or separate prices for particular capabilities, so normalize units before multiplying.

A practical estimation procedure

  1. List every model call. Include planner, tool-selection, observation, final-answer, retry, and delegated-agent calls. Give each call an identifier so no step is silently omitted.
  2. Record token categories. For each call, capture uncached input, cached input, and output tokens from the provider’s usage object or billing export. If a field is unavailable, mark it unknown instead of treating it as zero.
  3. Separate repeated prefixes. Determine which input tokens were actually accepted as cached under the provider’s rules. A stable prompt does not prove a cache hit.
  4. Apply current prices. Multiply each category by the rate for the selected model at the time of the run. Rates can change, so save the rate-card date with your estimate.
  5. Add non-model charges. Include tool-use fees, container or code-execution charges, runtime or hosting time, third-party API calls, storage, and any other metered service that participated in the run.
  6. Compare estimate with the invoice. Reconcile differences caused by rounding, minimum billable units, currency conversion, delayed usage records, or charges reported outside the model usage object.

Illustrative calculation (not a typical usage claim)

Suppose a four-call workflow records the following token quantities. The numbers below are only an example of the arithmetic; they are not an industry average.

Call Uncached input Cached input Output
Planner 2,000 0 500
Tool selection 1,000 1,500 200
Observation and revision 2,500 1,500 700
Final response 1,000 1,500 900
Total 6,500 4,500 2,300

If the model’s prices are represented by Rin for uncached input, Rc for cached input, and Rout for output, the model estimate is 6,500 × Rin + 4,500 × Rc + 2,300 × Rout. Replace those symbols with the provider’s published prices and then add any applicable tool or runtime charges.

Does a longer final answer always cost more?

No. A long final answer can be a small part of the total. An agent may spend more tokens reading a large file, carrying history through several calls, or processing verbose tool output than it spends writing the final response. Conversely, a concise answer can be expensive if it required multiple planning rounds, retries, or delegated work.

Output length still matters because generated tokens are metered, and hidden reasoning may add output usage even when the displayed answer is short. The only reliable way to know the split is to inspect per-call usage for the run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How does prompt caching change the bill?

Caching can reduce the price of eligible repeated input, especially when a long, stable instruction prefix is sent on many calls. The provider may charge separate rates for writing a cache entry and reading it, impose a minimum prefix size, or expire entries after a period of inactivity.

Design the request so stable instructions and tool schemas form a reusable prefix, while changing user data comes later. Then verify cache-read and cache-write fields in usage records. A long-lived conversation, connection, or session is not itself evidence that the provider reused tokens, and cache behavior can vary by model and endpoint.

What non-token charges can make an agent run expensive?

Model tokens are only one part of the bill. Depending on the platform, the following may be metered separately:

  • Tool execution: search, browser, database, messaging, or specialized tool calls can have per-call or usage-based fees.
  • Containers and code execution: CPU time, memory, storage, or generated artifacts can incur compute charges.
  • Runtime duration: an agent that waits, streams, or keeps a worker active may consume time-based capacity.
  • Third-party services: external APIs, data providers, vector stores, and hosted functions may bill independently.
  • Retries: timeouts, malformed tool arguments, rate limits, or validation failures can repeat both input and output usage.
  • Delegated agents: subagents add their own model calls and may use different models or tools with separate rates.

Not every provider charges every category, and a workflow may not use all of them. Check the service’s pricing and billing documentation for the features enabled in your implementation.

Why can usage dashboards show incomplete or null data?

Agent observability systems aggregate usage across calls, but records can arrive after the run, omit fields that are not known, or change as accounting is finalized. OpenAI’s agent documentation cautions that trace usage can appear as null when unknown and that usage details may change. A null field is therefore not proof that the call used zero tokens.

For dependable accounting, retain request identifiers, model names, timestamps, per-call usage objects, cache indicators, tool events, and billing exports. Reconcile after delayed records arrive, and keep an audit note when a provider reports only a run-level total.

Which models or providers should I compare for an agent?

Compare the whole workflow, not a single headline price. A lower per-token rate can produce a higher cost per completed task if the model needs more calls, longer outputs, or more retries.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Input and output rates What are the current prices for the model, endpoint, region, and output category?
Cached input Is cached input discounted, and what are the minimum, write, read, and expiration rules?
Context size Can the model hold the workflow’s instructions, files, history, and tool results without repeated summarization?
Telemetry Are per-call input, cached-input, output, reasoning, and tool fields exposed and exportable?
Extra services Are tools, containers, runtime, storage, or third-party connectors billed separately?
Task success How many calls, retries, and human corrections are required to finish the task reliably?

OpenAI and Anthropic publish model-specific pricing and documentation for these mechanisms, but their rate cards and product rules are examples rather than a complete market survey. Recheck the applicable official pricing page before making a budget or comparing vendors because rates and features change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I control an agent’s token costs without breaking results?

  • Limit context deliberately. Keep only relevant history and retrieve narrow passages instead of attaching entire files or logs.
  • Compress tool output. Return structured fields, summaries, or selected rows rather than raw HTML and verbose traces.
  • Reuse stable prefixes. Place durable instructions and schemas before changing data so eligible caching can work.
  • Choose tools selectively. Expose only the tools needed for the task; every schema adds input tokens and every extra option can trigger exploration.
  • Set output limits. Use an appropriate maximum output budget and request the required format, while leaving enough room for valid results.
  • Route by difficulty. Use a less expensive model for classification or extraction and reserve a stronger model for steps that need it, if quality remains acceptable.
  • Stop runaway loops. Set maximum turns, retry limits, timeouts, and duplicate-action checks.
  • Measure success cost. Track cost per completed task, not just cost per call, so failed or manually repaired runs are visible.

What are the most common estimation mistakes?

  • Counting only the prompt and answer: intermediate calls and tool results are omitted.
  • Using words as tokens: tokenization varies by model, language, and encoding.
  • Assuming all input is cached: cache eligibility and hit status must be reported by the provider.
  • Ignoring reasoning usage: generated reasoning can count toward output billing even when it is not displayed.
  • Treating missing telemetry as free usage: unknown or delayed fields are not zero.
  • Using a stale rate card: model prices and add-on fees change over time.
  • Leaving out retries and subagents: recovery paths can multiply calls after an apparent failure.

Build estimates from real traces, label assumptions, and update them whenever you change the model, tools, prompt structure, or provider terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I estimate tokens from characters before sending a prompt?

Only approximately. Character-to-token ratios vary by tokenizer, language, punctuation, and code, so use a tokenizer for the selected model when a budget matters and treat any preflight estimate as a range.

Should I keep an agent’s entire conversation forever to preserve context?

Usually not. Older turns can be summarized or stored externally and retrieved when relevant, reducing repeated input while preserving the facts the agent needs; test that summarization does not remove details required for correct actions.

How should I set a spending limit for an autonomous workflow?

Combine a per-run token or currency ceiling with maximum turns, retry limits, tool allowlists, and a timeout. Make the runtime stop or request approval when any limit is reached, then review the trace to identify the step that consumed the budget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did two identical-looking requests receive different bills?

The underlying context may differ: cached-prefix eligibility, tool results, hidden reasoning, retries, model routing, or third-party calls can change between runs. Compare per-call usage and event logs rather than comparing the visible prompts alone.
