AI adoption is changing the tasks people do and how work is organized, but current evidence does not show a universal wave of job losses or a broad increase or decrease in wages. Some firm-level studies find productivity gains; whether those gains translate into more jobs, higher pay, or better working conditions depends on the tasks involved, how widely employers use AI, and how businesses and workers adapt.

The key distinction is between a job being exposed to AI and a job actually being automated. Exposure describes tasks that AI might affect. Adoption means AI is being used. Neither, by itself, tells you whether employment or earnings will change.

How will AI affect jobs?

AI is more likely to change the mix of tasks in many jobs than to make every exposed occupation disappear. It can take over particular tasks, help a worker complete them, increase demand for a product or service by reducing its cost, or create new work. The overall employment result depends on which of these forces dominates and how quickly employers, workers, and customers respond.

For example, automating one task does not necessarily remove the role that includes it. A worker may spend less time on that task and more on work that still requires judgment, coordination, accountability, or interaction. But if the task represents a large share of a role and employers do not need the saved labor elsewhere, the same change could reduce demand for that kind of work. These are possible pathways, not a prediction for every occupation.

A 2025 National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) paper examines task substitution and reallocation. It finds reduced labor demand for highly exposed tasks, while productivity-driven growth in labor demand at firms adopting AI offsets some of the losses in overall employment. That distinction matters: a negative effect on a particular task or occupation can coexist with a smaller change in total employment.

The International Labour Organization (ILO), in its June 2026 review of empirical evidence, says large-scale displacement remains limited in the evidence it reviewed. That describes the observed evidence to date; it does not rule out future changes as adoption deepens or technology and business practices evolve.

Why job counts can hide major changes

Employment totals are only one measure of what is happening. Work can be reorganized even when the number of people employed or their recorded hours do not change. In Denmark, a study linking employer adoption surveys with administrative records found no average effect on earnings or recorded hours over the two years following ChatGPT’s launch that was larger than 2% in either direction. At the same time, employers reported reorganizing tasks and introducing work involving content generation, AI oversight, and AI integration.

That result is specific to the Danish study setting and its two-year window. It does not establish that no individual worker was affected, or that the same outcome will hold in other countries, industries, or longer time periods. It shows why a stable average can coexist with changes in what people do at work.

Will AI take my job?

An exposure estimate cannot tell you whether your job will be lost. It indicates that AI could affect some tasks in an occupation; it does not measure whether an employer has adopted AI, whether a task will be automated rather than assisted, or whether the employer will reduce staffing.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimated in 2024 that AI could affect about 40% of jobs globally. “Affect” refers to potential exposure, not a forecast that 40% of jobs will disappear. The IMF distinguishes jobs where AI may complement workers from those where it may substitute for some work, and notes that productivity effects can also matter.

What determines whether a task changes a job?

  • What the task involves: Exposure is about task potential. It is not the same as a judgment that an entire occupation can be performed by AI.
  • Whether an employer adopts the technology: A theoretical capability has no direct workplace effect until a tool is introduced and used.
  • How the tool is used: It may assist a worker, automate a task, or change how work is divided among people.
  • What happens to the time or cost saved: An employer may need fewer hours for a task, expand output, shift staff to other work, or create responsibilities related to AI use.
  • How work and demand adjust: Training, reallocation, customer demand, and the pace of change influence whether task-level shifts become job gains or losses.

Exposure also differs among workers and places. The ILO’s 2025 analysis describes variation in transformative exposure by gender and by national or regional income level. Exposure scores are therefore not interchangeable with individual risk assessments: people with similar job titles may do different tasks, and workplaces may adopt tools at different rates.

Does AI increase productivity?

Some studies find productivity gains, but the size and meaning of an estimate depend on what was measured, where, and over what period. A firm-level productivity increase is not automatically an increase in economy-wide output, a pay rise for each worker, or a reduction in working hours.

A European Investment Bank (EIB) study published in January 2026 used matched data on more than 12,000 non-financial firms in the European Union and United States. It estimates that AI adoption increased the level of labor productivity by 4% in its study sample. The study attributes the gain to capital deepening, reports no adverse firm-level employment effect, and says the productivity gains were concentrated in medium and large firms. This is a study-specific estimate, not a universal forecast for every employer or worker.

The ILO’s June 2026 review adds an important qualification: early productivity gains are uneven and often have not been verified in measured output. Workers may report saving a few percent of working hours, but such reported time savings have not consistently translated into measured output, wages, or employment. Saving time on a task and producing more valuable output are related possibilities, not the same result.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) likewise treats broader economic gains as conditional. Effective diffusion, skills, infrastructure, and the ability to reallocate labor and capital all matter. In other words, installing a tool does not guarantee that an organization will redesign work well enough to realize its potential gains.

How to read a productivity figure

  • Check the unit: A result for firms is not necessarily a result for individual workers, a sector, or a national economy.
  • Check the outcome: Labor productivity, reported time saved, output, wages, and employment are different measures.
  • Check the sample and geography: The EIB’s 4% estimate applies to its sample of EU and US non-financial firms, not all businesses worldwide.
  • Check the mechanism: In the EIB study, the reported increase is attributed to capital deepening, not to cutting employment.
  • Check whether a gain is measured or reported: Workers’ accounts of time saved are informative, but they do not by themselves establish a measured increase in output.

Will AI lower wages—or raise them?

Current evidence does not establish a broad causal wage increase or decline for all workers. The direction and distribution of any change can vary among firms, occupations, and workers.

The EIB reports higher wages at firms adopting AI, alongside higher innovation and productivity. This is a firm-level association; it does not show that every worker at an adopting firm receives a raise, or establish that AI adoption alone caused the higher wages. The Danish NBER study, meanwhile, found no average earnings effect larger than 2% in either direction in its two-year study window. These results are not contradictory: they concern different settings and evidence, and neither settles long-run wage effects everywhere.

The IMF has identified distributional risks as well as potential productivity gains. If AI complements higher-income workers more strongly, labor-income inequality could rise. If returns to capital increase, wealth inequality could also increase. These are mechanisms and risks described in IMF analysis, not measured universal outcomes.

Productivity gains do not determine how the resulting value is shared. Their distribution depends on how firms organize work and how benefits reach workers, owners, or customers. The available studies do not justify promising a pay increase to an individual simply because their employer uses AI.

Who is most exposed to generative AI?

Workers are more exposed when their jobs include tasks that generative AI could affect, but exposure varies within occupations as well as across them. It should be understood as a measure of potential task impact—not a ranking of who will lose work.

The IMF’s 2024 estimate is global and concerns jobs potentially affected by AI broadly. It should not be treated as a generative-AI-only estimate or as a country-level prediction. The ILO’s 2025 analysis notes differences in transformative exposure by gender and national or regional income level, but those group differences do not establish what will happen to any particular worker.

An NBER survey paper published in August 2026 describes adoption as widespread but shallow: AI is used across many occupations and tasks, yet in most groups fewer than half of workers adopt it, with meaningful differences among people doing similar work. That finding reinforces the difference between what a technology could affect and what workers are actually using at work.

Why do studies of AI and work reach different conclusions?

Studies can appear to disagree because they examine different technologies, outcomes, populations, and time horizons. A result about task-level labor demand cannot be directly compared with a result about wages or firm productivity as if all measured the same thing.

What to compare Why it matters
Technology Generative AI and chatbots are not the same research subject as broader AI and machine-learning systems.
Outcome Task demand, employment, hours, earnings, and productivity answer different questions.
Unit of analysis Findings about workers, workplaces, firms, occupations, sectors, or national economies describe different levels.
Method Exposure modeling, surveys, administrative records, experimental evidence, and firm-level causal designs offer different kinds of evidence.
Time horizon and geography A two-year Danish result or a study of EU and US firms cannot settle long-run global effects.
Evidence status Measured outcomes differ from reported time savings, correlations, potential exposure, and projections.

For example, the IMF’s 40% figure concerns estimated job exposure; it is not an observed employment outcome. The NBER Denmark study examines earnings and recorded hours following ChatGPT’s launch, while the EIB study estimates firm-level labor productivity in a matched sample. Their results can inform different parts of the question, but they should not be collapsed into a single claim about whether AI “creates” or “destroys” jobs.

What should workers and employers take from the evidence?

For workers, the practical question is not just whether an occupation is exposed, but which tasks in a particular job are changing and how responsibilities are being reassigned. The available evidence supports paying attention to adoption and work organization rather than assuming an exposure score predicts an individual outcome.

For employers, the firm evidence points to complements as well as tools. The EIB study highlights software, data, and workforce training as complements to AI adoption, and reports that productivity gains are concentrated in medium and large firms. The OECD’s broader analysis also emphasizes skills, infrastructure, effective diffusion, and reallocation. These factors help explain why adoption alone does not ensure a uniform productivity payoff.

  • For workers: Track changes in the tasks your workplace actually assigns, including new responsibilities for AI oversight or integration.
  • For employers: Consider how software, usable data, and workforce training fit together with adoption, rather than treating the tool as a standalone productivity solution.
  • For readers assessing claims: Ask whether a number measures exposure, adoption, reported time savings, output, employment, hours, or wages—and whose results it describes.

What is the strongest conclusion so far?

The clearest current finding is rapid task reorganization amid uncertainty about longer-term economy-wide effects. Evidence shows that AI can reduce demand for some exposed tasks, complement workers, and support new AI-related responsibilities. Some firm-level studies find productivity gains, but those gains are uneven and have not consistently appeared as higher measured output, wages, or employment.

It is too early to turn exposure estimates into job-loss forecasts or a firm-level productivity result into a promise of higher pay. The outcome depends on what employers adopt, how they redesign work, and whether productivity improvements generate enough demand and new work to offset labor-saving changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is AI job exposure measured?

Exposure estimates assess whether AI could perform or affect tasks associated with jobs. They are not direct counts of automated positions, and the result depends on how the study defines both the technology and the tasks.

Does AI adoption mean a company will hire fewer people?

Not necessarily. Adoption can change task demand, but lower costs or increased output can also raise demand for labor elsewhere in a firm; the balance depends on how the business responds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are generative AI and machine-learning studies measuring the same thing?

No. Some studies focus on chatbots and generative AI, while others examine broader AI systems. Their findings should be compared only after checking the technology each study covers.

Why can AI save workers time without increasing measured productivity?

Time saved on selected tasks may be too limited, unevenly used, or redirected to work that does not show up as more measured output. A reported time saving is not itself proof that output, pay, or employment rose.
