Replacing several plug-in UPS units with a properly designed whole-home battery can simplify outage protection, but it does not make power problems disappear by itself. A UPS protects only the equipment plugged into it, while a battery connected to the electrical panel can energize the circuits an installer assigns to backup. Runtime still depends on stored energy, simultaneous loads, battery count, and outage conditions. The practical decision is therefore not “UPS or battery?” but which loads need local ride-through, which circuits need extended backup, and how much electrical work your home can support.

What actually changes when you move from individual UPS units to a whole-home battery?

An individual UPS is a local appliance: utility power enters the UPS, and only its connected devices receive battery power when the utility fails. A home battery is part of an installed electrical system that can feed selected branch circuits—or, when designed and permitted for it, much of the home—through dedicated switching equipment.

That difference removes the need to place a UPS beside every computer, router, television, or networking cabinet. It also moves the difficult decisions upstream: an installer must determine which circuits are backed up, how much power they draw together, where the battery connects, and whether the service panel needs upgrades.

Manufacturers describe these systems differently, so treat the following Tesla example as an illustration rather than a universal architecture. Tesla says a Powerwall installation includes at least one battery plus a Backup Gateway or Backup Switch, with the exact design varying by solar equipment, battery model and quantity, and location. Tesla also specifies installation by Tesla or a certified installer. See the Powerwall System Design guidance.

How does a UPS protect a computer or network device?

A UPS combines a charger, battery, inverter, outlets, and usually surge or voltage protection. During normal operation it passes utility power to the load and keeps its battery charged. When voltage falls outside its operating range, it switches to inverter output quickly enough for compatible equipment to keep running.

Its coverage is deliberately narrow. A desktop UPS protects the computer, monitor, and accessories plugged into its battery-backed outlets; it does not protect another room’s refrigerator or a hard-wired furnace. Runtime is a load calculation, not a fixed promise. APC explains that adding connected equipment reduces runtime in its UPS Buying Guide, and Eaton likewise says runtime varies with the wattage of attached equipment in its Desktop UPS buyers guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes a UPS useful for short interruptions, brownouts, and orderly shutdowns. Some models communicate with a computer or NAS so software can save work and shut down before the battery is exhausted. Eaton specifically discusses desktop computers and NAS devices and ties their runtime to the connected load.

Why runtime charts matter more than VA ratings

Volt-ampere (VA) and watt ratings tell you how much instantaneous load a UPS can support; they do not tell you how long it will run. Use the manufacturer’s runtime chart for the exact model, then compare it with the measured watts of the equipment you intend to connect. A gaming PC at a high graphics load, for example, can run for far less time than the same PC idling at the desktop.

What does a whole-home battery back up?

“Whole home” describes the circuits included in the design, not unlimited energy. Tesla says backup duration depends on battery quantity, appliances, and the home’s energy use. Its What Can Powerwall Back Up page distinguishes whole-home and partial-home configurations and notes that high-demand loads may be excluded from partial backup.

A whole-home design may keep ordinary lighting, outlets, refrigeration, heating controls, and networking online, subject to the system’s power rating and local rules. A partial-home design routes only selected circuits through the backup equipment. That can be a sensible choice when air-conditioning compressors, electric resistance heat, water heaters, well pumps, electric vehicle chargers, or induction ranges would consume too much power or require more batteries than the owner wants to install.

Energy capacity versus power output

Two specifications answer different questions:

  • Energy capacity (kWh) is the size of the fuel tank. It indicates how much energy the battery can store, subject to usable-capacity limits and operating reserves.
  • Continuous power (kW) is the rate at which the inverter can deliver energy. It determines whether several appliances can run at once and whether a motor’s starting surge can be handled.

In a June 9, 2025 article, Tesla reports 13.5 kWh of storage and 11.5 kW of continuous power for Powerwall. Tesla also claims that this covers peak use in about 95% of U.S. homes; that percentage is a company-published claim, not an independent study. The figures appear in Backup Power and Energy Savings for Your Family.

How long will a home battery run the house?

There is no honest single runtime number for a house. A rough planning relationship is usable battery energy divided by the average load, with additional allowance for inverter losses, reserve settings, temperature, and the fact that appliances cycle rather than draw a constant wattage.

For example, a home averaging 1 kW would consume roughly 1 kWh per hour before losses; a home averaging 3 kW would consume about three times as fast. Starting a compressor can also create a short high-power demand even when its average energy use is modest. Ask the installer to model both steady-state consumption and startup surges for the appliances you want backed up.

Loads that commonly change the answer

  • Heating and cooling equipment can dominate demand, especially electric resistance heat and central air-conditioning.
  • Water heaters, ranges, dryers, pool pumps, and vehicle chargers are large discretionary loads during an outage.
  • Refrigerators, freezers, sump pumps, and well pumps cycle, so their daily energy use matters more than their brief running wattage—provided the inverter can handle startup.
  • Internet equipment and security systems use little energy but may be important to keep online continuously.

Battery count and household behavior therefore matter as much as the nameplate capacity. A system that keeps a refrigerator, lights, internet, and selected outlets operating for an extended outage may not run an electric furnace and vehicle charger at the same time.

What installation and electrical work does a residential battery require?

A home battery is not a larger UPS that can simply be plugged into a wall outlet. It requires a compatible inverter, protective disconnects, communications, mounting, and a controlled connection to the home’s service equipment. The backup gateway or switch isolates the home from the utility during an outage so the battery does not energize utility lines.

Tesla’s Powerwall Pre-Installation documentation says a site assessment reviews the home’s electrical system, identifies upgrades, and determines battery quantity from household usage. Utility requirements can affect the allowed configuration and equipment. Local permitting, fire clearances, placement, and interconnection rules are jurisdiction-specific, so a quote made without a site visit is provisional.

  1. Inventory the service and circuits. Record the main service rating, panel spaces, subpanels, solar equipment, generator interlocks, and any existing energy-management hardware.
  2. Measure real loads. Use utility interval data, circuit monitors, or appliance measurements rather than guessing from labels alone. Note motor-starting loads and seasonal heating or cooling.
  3. Choose the backup boundary. Decide whether you need selected essential circuits or a design intended to support nearly all circuits with load management.
  4. Have the installer model power and energy. Confirm simultaneous kW, surge capability, usable kWh, reserve settings, and expected operation if solar is unavailable.
  5. Resolve approvals and upgrades. The installer should identify panel, wiring, grounding, structural, fire-code, and utility requirements before the contract is final.
  6. Commission and test. Verify that the transfer works, backed-up circuits are labeled, monitoring is configured, and the system performs a controlled outage test.

Should you remove every UPS after installing a home battery?

Usually, no. The battery can supply the backed-up circuit, but a local UPS can still provide a controlled bridge for sensitive equipment and an orderly shutdown path. Whether that extra layer is worthwhile depends on the battery system’s transfer behavior, the equipment’s tolerance for brief interruptions, and how much runtime you need at the desk or rack.

Keep a UPS when:

  • a computer, NAS, network switch, or storage device needs software-managed shutdown;
  • you want the equipment to ride through a transfer event without relying on its power supply’s hold-up time;
  • the device is on a circuit excluded from the battery backup; or
  • you need a small, local battery for a specific work session while the home’s larger system is conserving energy.

If you retain one, size it for the actual connected load and replace its cartridge according to the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance. Searching for a category such as “desktop UPS battery backup for computer” is more useful than choosing by appearance or maximum VA alone; a replacement battery must match the exact UPS model and chemistry.

UPS versus whole-home battery: which system fits which job?

Decision factor Individual UPS Installed home battery
Protected equipment Only devices plugged into the unit Circuits selected in the electrical design
Typical purpose Short ride-through, surge/voltage protection, graceful shutdown Extended outage power for essential or broadly backed-up loads
Runtime driver UPS battery size and connected watts; adding loads shortens runtime Battery quantity, usable kWh, household load, reserves, and solar/grid availability
Power limit Unit’s watt and surge rating Inverter’s continuous and surge rating, plus load-management rules
Installation Usually plug-in; follow outlet and circuit limits Professional electrical installation, switching equipment, permits, and possible upgrades
Solar interaction Normally charges from the outlet May coordinate with solar and the grid, subject to system design and utility rules
Shutdown behavior May signal compatible computers or NAS devices Usually keeps assigned circuits energized; individual device shutdown still requires software or a local UPS
Maintenance Battery replacement and self-tests System monitoring, inspections, firmware/service requirements, and eventual battery replacement

The table shows why the technologies are complementary rather than interchangeable. A UPS is precise at the device level; a home battery is powerful at the circuit level.

What problems can still occur after the switch?

The battery runs out sooner than expected

Check which loads were operating, whether a heat pump or water heater was enabled, and whether reserve settings reduced usable energy. Ask the installer to provide a load-shedding plan and an outage estimate for both normal and high-demand seasons.

The system trips when a motor starts

Verify the inverter’s surge specification and the appliance’s locked-rotor or startup demand. A soft starter, dedicated circuit, or exclusion of that appliance may be necessary; adding energy capacity alone does not automatically increase instantaneous power.

A computer reboots during transfer

Confirm the battery system’s transfer characteristics and the computer’s power-supply tolerance. A UPS at the desk or network rack may provide the ride-through and shutdown signaling that a panel-level battery does not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some outlets are dead during an outage

That may be intentional partial backup. Check the circuit schedule and labels, then ask the installer whether the outlet can be moved to a backed-up circuit without exceeding the design limits. Do not backfeed a circuit with an improvised cord or transfer device.

Solar does not recharge the battery as expected

Solar charging during an outage depends on inverter compatibility, islanding controls, available sunlight, and the system’s operating mode. Have the installer explain the exact behavior of your solar array and battery combination rather than assuming that panels will always recharge the battery.

Is a whole-home battery worth it if outages are rare?

The answer depends on the value of the loads, outage consequences, and the cost of installation in your location—none of which can be generalized from manufacturer pages. A battery may be justified by medical equipment, remote work, well or sump-pump dependence, refrigeration, or a need to keep heating controls online. If your main concern is protecting one workstation for ten minutes, a correctly sized UPS is simpler.

Do not use a generic payback claim to decide. Request a design that separates backup value from any solar self-consumption or time-of-use savings, and obtain the utility, permit, and maintenance assumptions in writing. Compare proposals by backed-up circuits, usable energy, continuous and surge power, warranty terms, monitoring, and what happens when the battery reaches its reserve.

What should you ask an installer before signing?

  • Which exact circuits are backed up, and which high-demand appliances are excluded?
  • What continuous and surge power can the inverter deliver, and how were startup loads measured?
  • How many usable kWh are available after reserve settings and operating limits?
  • What runtime model was used for my measured household load?
  • What happens when the battery is empty, the grid returns, or solar production is low?
  • Which panel, wiring, grounding, structural, fire-code, and utility upgrades are included?
  • How will computers, NAS devices, routers, alarms, and medical equipment handle transfer events?
  • What monitoring, inspections, firmware updates, service response, and battery-replacement provisions apply?

These questions turn “whole home” from a marketing phrase into a defined electrical scope. They also reveal where a small UPS remains valuable even after the main installation is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a home battery replace a generator for every outage?

Not automatically. A battery’s energy is finite, and its ability to recharge during a long outage depends on grid restoration, solar production, weather, and the installed controls. A generator and battery also have different fuel, noise, maintenance, and operating requirements, so the choice is site-specific.

Will a whole-home battery protect against surges and bad voltage?

The battery system’s inverter and switching equipment provide the protection specified by that system, but they are not a universal substitute for every point-of-use protection device. Check the installation documentation for surge ratings and keep specialized protection where the equipment manufacturer requires it.

Can I add batteries later if my first system is too small?

Some platforms support additional batteries, while others impose limits based on model, firmware, wiring, or local approvals. Ask for the permitted expansion path before installation; a future addition may require new design work or electrical upgrades.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens to a UPS when the home battery is charging or in standby?

The UPS continues to operate according to its own charger, inverter, and load settings. It may still click or switch modes when the upstream waveform changes, so verify compatibility if the UPS is connected to an inverter-based backup circuit.

How often should I test a residential battery backup?

Follow the system’s monitoring and maintenance instructions, and confirm that automatic self-tests are enabled. In addition, schedule a controlled outage test with the installer or electrician so you can verify transfer, circuit coverage, alerts, and recovery without creating an unsafe backfeed.
