The fastest way to make a horror game more comfortable is to disable motion blur and camera shake, lower camera sensitivity, and then adjust field of view in small steps. If dark scenes strain your eyes, balance brightness and contrast, control glare, keep a little ambient light in the room, and take regular breaks. These changes address two related but different problems: motion sickness comes mainly from a mismatch between what your eyes see and what your inner ear senses, while digital eye strain is aggravated by glare, low visibility, prolonged focus and infrequent blinking.
Settings names and availability vary by game, platform and patch, but the sequence below gives you a practical starting point without sacrificing more control or visual information than necessary.

What should I change first to stop a horror game making me motion sick?
Start with the camera effects that create the most artificial movement, then adjust speed and field of view. Change one setting at a time and play for a short interval so you know which change helped or hurt.
- Disable motion blur. Blur is applied while the camera or your character moves. Turning it off keeps edges and room geometry sharper, which can make rapid turns easier for your visual system to process.
- Turn off camera shake and camera bob. Explosions, sprinting, impacts and scripted scares can move the viewpoint even when you are not moving the camera. Remove both options if the game separates them.
- Lower camera sensitivity or speed. Begin below the default value. Increase it only if aiming or turning becomes impractical. A slower camera generally means less abrupt visual rotation, but it requires more stick or mouse movement.
- Test field of view (FOV) gradually. There is no universally comfortable number. Move the slider in small increments, use the same short route in the game, and keep the setting that produces the least discomfort while preserving useful peripheral vision.
- Try a persistent center dot or comfort mode. A fixed reference point can help some players maintain a stable visual anchor. Others find an overlay distracting, so treat it as an experiment rather than a guaranteed fix.
- Disable remaining moving effects. If available, switch off head bob, weapon sway, speed lines, chromatic aberration and forced camera movement. These effects may add atmosphere but also add motion or reduce image clarity.
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 asks games to let players disable or adjust camera shake, camera bob, motion blur, weapon sway and automatic camera movement, along with camera sensitivity and field of view. Those controls are useful because they let you reduce movement without disabling the game itself.

Why do motion blur, camera shake and FOV affect motion sickness?
Motion sickness can occur when your eyes report movement that your vestibular system does not detect. A game can create that conflict through simulated acceleration, rapid rotation, screen shake or a narrow view that magnifies apparent movement. Removing unnecessary camera motion reduces the amount of conflicting information.
Camera speed versus control
Lower sensitivity is usually the least disruptive first adjustment. It slows visual rotation while leaving the game mechanics intact. The trade-off is physical: you may need a longer mouse swipe or more controller-stick travel to turn the same distance. If you lower sensitivity so far that you constantly lift the mouse or lose targets, raise it one step and compensate by disabling shake and sway.
Choosing an FOV without guessing
A wider FOV shows more of the scene and can reduce the feeling that the view is tunnel-like, but it can also make objects near the edges appear to move faster. A narrower FOV reduces peripheral movement but may feel claustrophobic or amplify the apparent effect of walking. Because both responses are common, test in small steps rather than copying a number from another player.

Stable visual anchors
A center dot, reticle or comfort vignette gives your eyes a stationary reference while the environment moves. PlayStation accessibility documentation for The Last of Us Part I, for example, lists a persistent center dot and several motion controls. That example shows what a comfort option can look like; it does not mean every game offers the same controls or that a dot helps everyone.
How can I reduce eye strain in dark horror games?
Eye comfort depends more on visibility, glare and viewing habits than on motion settings. Make dark details readable without turning the display into a bright source in a dark room.
- Calibrate brightness and contrast in the game’s own pattern. Raise brightness until shadow detail is visible, then reduce it if black areas turn gray or bright effects bloom. Increase contrast only as far as details remain distinguishable.
- Control reflections. Keep the screen out of direct alignment with windows and lamps. Close blinds, reposition a light source or change the display angle when you can see reflections across dark scenes.
- Keep some ambient light. Playing in total darkness makes the screen a much brighter visual target. A small, indirect room light can reduce the contrast between the display and its surroundings.
- Use a comfortable viewing distance. Sit far enough away that you are not leaning toward the screen to read menus or inspect shadows. If text remains difficult to read, use the game’s subtitle, HUD or accessibility-size controls where available.
- Blink deliberately. Long, tense scenes encourage staring, which dries the eye surface. Briefly close or relax your eyes during loading screens and dialogue.
- Take periodic breaks. The American Optometric Association’s gaming guidance emphasizes breaks, blinking and glare control. Xbox health guidance likewise recommends managing light levels, adjusting brightness and contrast, and taking breaks.
These steps target digital eye strain and glare. They will not necessarily stop nausea caused by a moving camera, so keep the motion controls adjusted as well.

What should I do when dizziness or nausea begins?
Stop the game as soon as symptoms appear instead of trying to finish a scene. Pause, look at a fixed point, get fresh air and allow the feeling to settle before deciding whether to continue.
- Pause or quit immediately when you notice dizziness, nausea, headache, sweating or disorientation.
- Look at a stable object in the room rather than the moving game image.
- Move to fresh air or a comfortably ventilated space and breathe slowly.
- Drink water if you need it and wait until you feel normal before returning.
- When you resume, change one camera setting and use a shorter session. If symptoms return, stop again.
The NHS describes motion sickness as feeling dizzy or feeling or being sick during travel; similar symptoms can occur with visual motion in games. Seek advice from a pharmacist or clinician if symptoms are persistent, severe, unusual for you, or happen outside gaming. Do not treat an accessory or a display filter as medical care.
How do I tune a game’s settings step by step?
Use this order whenever you install a new horror game or a patch changes its menu.

- Open Settings, then check Accessibility, Camera, Controls and Graphics; developers place motion controls in different sections.
- Set motion blur, camera shake, head bob and weapon sway to Off or their lowest values.
- Turn off chromatic aberration, speed lines and any automatic camera or sprint movement.
- Lower camera sensitivity one or two steps from the default. Keep separate horizontal and vertical values balanced unless one axis causes more discomfort.
- Adjust FOV by a small increment. Walk, sprint and turn for several minutes, then compare with the previous value.
- Enable a center dot, reticle or comfort vignette if the game provides one. Keep it only if it feels helpful.
- Run the game’s brightness or gamma calibration. Confirm that shadow detail is visible without making bright effects painful.
- Save the profile, then test a normal play session rather than judging the menu alone. Record the settings that feel comfortable so a later update can be restored quickly.
Menu labels, slider ranges and the presence of these options differ by game, platform and patch. If a control is missing, use the closest available option and compensate with the room and display changes described above.
Which comfort trade-offs should I expect?
| Change | Likely comfort benefit | Possible trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Motion blur off | Sharper moving detail and less smeared motion | Less cinematic appearance |
| Camera shake off | Fewer unexpected viewpoint jolts | Impacts and scares may feel less intense |
| Lower sensitivity | Slower, steadier camera rotation | More mouse or stick movement is required |
| FOV adjustment | Can reduce tunnel vision or peripheral motion, depending on the player | Changes spatial awareness and edge distortion |
| Center dot or vignette | Provides a stable visual reference | Overlay may distract or hide small details |
| Higher brightness | Reveals dark details | Can increase bloom, washed-out blacks or glare |
The goal is not to remove every visual effect. It is to keep enough visual information and control for the game to remain playable while eliminating effects that provoke symptoms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What common mistakes make discomfort worse?
- Changing every slider at once: You cannot tell which setting caused improvement or deterioration. Change one category, then reassess.
- Copying someone else’s FOV: Comfort varies with display size, distance, platform and individual sensitivity.
- Raising brightness without reducing glare: A brighter image can reveal shadows but make reflections and bloom more tiring.
- Playing through nausea: Symptoms can intensify and may last after the session. Pause at the first warning sign.
- Assuming eye-strain tools cure motion sickness: Anti-glare measures help reflections and visual fatigue; they do not remove a visual-vestibular conflict.
- Using accessories as treatment: A steadier controller, monitor light bar, bias lighting or anti-glare glasses may improve comfort for some setups, but none is a medical treatment and blue-light filtering should not be presented as a guaranteed way to prevent eye strain.
How should I set up the room for long horror-game sessions?
Place the display so windows and lamps do not reflect directly into it, use soft indirect ambient light, and keep the screen at a distance that lets you read without leaning forward. Keep water nearby, blink during pauses and schedule breaks before a long chapter rather than waiting for pain or nausea. If you use a monitor light bar or bias lighting, aim it to illuminate the wall or desk without shining into your eyes or creating a bright reflection on the panel.

Comfort controls are most effective when paired with sensible sessions. A game can still trigger symptoms through scripted movement, rapid transitions or flashing effects even after the camera is tuned, so stop whenever your body signals that the session should end.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a wider FOV permanently prevent motion sickness in games?
No. A wider view helps some players by reducing tunnel vision, while others find edge movement more uncomfortable. Treat FOV as an individual setting and change it gradually rather than relying on a universal value.

They are not a guaranteed solution. Glare control, sensible brightness, blinking and breaks address the main practical contributors described by optometry and gaming guidance; glasses may be an optional comfort aid if glare is the specific problem.
Why do I feel sick only during sprinting or turning?
Sprint effects often combine camera bob, weapon sway, speed lines and rapid field-of-view changes. Disable those effects first, then lower sensitivity and test a smaller FOV adjustment.
When should gaming-related dizziness be checked by a professional?
Get pharmacist or clinical advice when symptoms are severe, persist after stopping, are unusual for you, or occur when you are not playing. Do not continue a session while symptoms are worsening.
