Verdict: The Homelite HBLT25CD is a conventional 26 cm³ petrol, two-stroke grass trimmer with a wide 432 mm swath and 2.4 mm line. Its specification is useful for routine domestic trimming, but operation is hands-on: you must mix fuel at 50:1, start it with a primer, choke and recoil, and keep up with filter and spark-plug maintenance. Owner feedback is mixed, scoring 2.7/5 from 12 ProductReview.com.au reviews, with ease of use at 2.5/5. It can last several years, yet difficult warm starts and maintenance effort are recurring concerns.

What is the Homelite HBLT25CD?

The HBLT25CD is a petrol grass trimmer built around a 26 cm³ two-stroke engine. It drives a line head rather than a metal blade and is intended for cutting grass and edging vegetation where a mower cannot reach. The operator manual lists a 432 mm cutting swath, which is the width cleared in one pass when the line is at full reach.

This is not a battery machine or a push-button electric starter. Fuel preparation, a primer bulb, choke control and a recoil starter are part of normal use. That arrangement avoids charging and battery storage, but it also means starting technique, fresh fuel and periodic service have a direct effect on whether the trimmer runs reliably.

Key specifications

Specification HBLT25CD figure What it means
Engine 26 cm³, two-stroke petrol Runs on a gasoline-and-two-stroke-oil mixture rather than straight petrol.
Maximum engine performance 0.80 kW Manual-listed maximum output, not an independent field test.
Rated performance 0.65 kW Manual-listed rated output.
Maximum spindle speed 12,000 min⁻¹ Maximum rotational speed specified for the spindle.
Cutting swath 432 mm Nominal line-cutting width per pass.
Line diameter 2.4 mm Use this diameter when buying replacement line.
Fuel-tank capacity 250 cm³ (0.25 L) Tank volume stated by the operator manual.
Weight 4.30 kg without fuel, cutting attachment or harness; 4.4 kg without fuel and harness, with cutting attachment Use the second figure when comparing the machine as configured for trimming.
Operator-position sound pressure 93.8 dB(A) A loudness figure measured at the operator position in the manual; hearing protection is required.

The two different weight figures are not contradictory: one excludes the cutting attachment as well as fuel and harness, while the other includes the attachment but still excludes fuel and harness. Carrying fuel adds a small amount, and the harness changes the way the load is supported rather than the machine’s dry mass.

How does the HBLT25CD perform in practical use?

On paper, the combination of a 26 cm³ engine and 432 mm swath favors covering open grass quickly rather than making very delicate cuts in tight beds. The 2.4 mm line is the size specified for the head, so fitting a thinner or thicker line changes the head’s operating characteristics and is not a safe substitute for the specified size.

The manual’s 0.80 kW maximum and 0.65 kW rated figures describe the engine, not a controlled comparison against another trimmer. No independent acceleration, cutting-rate, vibration or fuel-consumption test is established for this model. Treat the published figures as specification data and judge suitability by the vegetation you actually cut, the condition of the head and the quality of starting and maintenance.

Noise, handling and fatigue

At 93.8 dB(A) operator sound pressure, the HBLT25CD is loud enough that hearing protection should be part of every session, not an optional extra. The 4.4 kg configuration weight is before fuel and harness, so the perceived effort also depends on how the harness is adjusted and how long the engine is held at working speed. The available owner ratings put noise at 2.8/5 and safety at 3.4/5, indicating varied personal experiences rather than a laboratory comfort measurement.

What fuel and oil does the HBLT25CD use?

Use gasoline mixed with synthetic two-stroke lubricant at a 50:1 ratio. The manual specifically warns against automotive two-stroke oil and outboard two-stroke oil. Using the wrong lubricant or running straight gasoline can damage a two-stroke engine, while an incorrect ratio can produce poor running, excess smoke or inadequate lubrication.

Mixing examples

  • For 1 litre of gasoline, a 50:1 ratio requires 20 ml of synthetic two-stroke oil.
  • For 5 litres of gasoline, use 100 ml of the same oil.
  • The 250 cm³ tank holds 0.25 litre; do not confuse tank capacity with the amount of oil in the storage container.

Measure both liquids accurately in a clean, approved fuel container, mix before filling and label the container. Follow local rules for storing and disposing of petrol mixtures. If a fuel batch is old, contaminated or made with the wrong oil, replacing it is safer than trying to correct the ratio in the tank.

How do you start the Homelite HBLT25CD?

Cold starting uses the primer bulb, choke and recoil starter in the sequence described by the operator manual. A warm engine normally needs less enrichment, but the exact control position should follow the model’s manual rather than a generic trimmer procedure.

  1. Place the trimmer on stable ground in a clear area. Keep the line head away from people, pets and objects.
  2. Confirm that the fuel is the correct 50:1 gasoline/synthetic-two-stroke-oil mixture and that the tank contains enough fuel.
  3. Use the primer bulb and choke as specified for a cold start.
  4. Hold the machine securely and pull the recoil starter with controlled strokes until the engine fires, then return the choke according to the manual’s sequence.
  5. Allow the engine to settle before moving to the work area. If the cutting head continues rotating after you release the trigger, stop the engine and correct the fault before using the trimmer.

Why is it hard to start once it has been running?

One ProductReview.com.au owner described the machine as lasting almost six years but becoming hard to start after it had been running for a while, especially in the final year of ownership. That is an owner report, not a controlled diagnosis, but it matches the practical checks worth making: verify the warm-start control position, inspect the air filter, replace a worn spark plug, and confirm that the fuel mixture is fresh and correctly measured.

Do not keep pulling the starter indefinitely. Stop if you smell heavily flooded fuel, allow the engine to cool, and return to the manual’s starting sequence. If the engine starts but the head remains engaged at idle, shut it down immediately; a spinning head after trigger release is a safety fault, not a condition to work around.

What line fits the HBLT25CD?

The specified line diameter is 2.4 mm. The manual identifies spare line as part number 528721006. When buying generic line, match the 2.4 mm diameter and confirm that the package is intended for the HBLT25CD head; diameter alone does not guarantee that a particular pre-cut length, shape or spool will fit.

Replacing line safely

  1. Stop the engine, disconnect the spark-plug lead if the manual directs this for servicing, and wait for the head to stop completely.
  2. Clean grass and debris from around the guard and head so contamination does not enter the spool.
  3. Open the head using the manual’s retaining procedure. Do not force a cover or substitute an unapproved retainer.
  4. Install 2.4 mm line or the specified 528721006 replacement, winding it evenly in the correct direction and leaving the ends at the manual’s stated length.
  5. Reassemble the head, check that it turns freely by hand with the engine off, and inspect the line-cutting blade on the guard before restarting.

Line that is too large can overload the head and engine; line that is too small may break more readily and alter cutting performance. Never fit an attachment that Homelite does not specify for this model.

What maintenance does the HBLT25CD need?

Routine service is central to reliable starting and cutting. The operator manual calls for attention to the foam air filter and a TORCH L7RTC spark plug, with annual replacement recommended for best performance.

Air filter care

  1. Stop the engine and let it cool before opening the filter housing.
  2. Remove the foam filter and wash it in warm, soapy water.
  3. Rinse as appropriate, squeeze out excess water without tearing the foam, and let it dry completely.
  4. Apply a light amount of suitable filter oil, reinstall it correctly, and replace the element if it is damaged.

The manual says replacing the filter at least once a year gives best performance. A clogged or deteriorated foam element restricts airflow and can contribute to difficult starting or poor running, so inspect it more often when trimming dusty or dry vegetation.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Spark plug replacement

The specified plug is a TORCH L7RTC. The manual advises annual replacement. Install the correct type and set it up according to the manual; do not substitute a plug solely because its thread appears to fit. A plug that is fouled, worn or incorrectly gapped can make both cold and warm starting more difficult.

Before every session

  • Check the fuel tank, fuel lines and cap for leaks.
  • Inspect the guard, line head, retainer and cutting blade for damage or looseness.
  • Verify that the trigger returns and that the head stops when the trigger is released.
  • Look for loose fasteners, cracked plastic and grass packed around the head or cooling areas.

Always stop the engine and let it cool before cleaning or servicing. Removing packed grass while the head can still move risks serious injury.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What safety equipment and work-area checks are required?

Clear the work area before starting. The manual specifically names rocks, broken glass, nails, wire and loose string as hazards that can be thrown by the rotating line. Walk the area rather than relying on a quick visual scan, and keep bystanders and pets away from the cutting zone.

  • Wear eye protection to guard against thrown fragments and line.
  • Wear hearing protection because the manual lists 93.8 dB(A) at the operator position.
  • Wear head protection where the work environment requires it and use sturdy footwear and clothing that cannot catch in the head.
  • Keep clear of the sharp line-cutting blade mounted on the guard.
  • Use only attachments specified by Homelite for the HBLT25CD.
  • Stop the engine before carrying, clearing a blockage, refuelling or performing maintenance, and let hot components cool first.

Refuelling deserves particular care: stop the engine, move away from ignition sources and wipe up any spilled mixture before restarting. Never test a suspected head or throttle fault with the cutting attachment near your body.

What do owners say about the HBLT25CD?

ProductReview.com.au lists 12 reviews and an overall score of 2.7/5. The category scores are user opinions, not controlled tests:

Category Score
Build quality 2.6/5
Value for money 3.0/5
Ease of use 2.5/5
Cleaning and maintenance 3.3/5
Noise level 2.8/5
Safety 3.4/5

The spread matters: owners rate cleaning and maintenance more favorably than ease of use, while build quality and noise remain below the midpoint. One visible review from Luke b (VIC) says: “You get what you pay for – For a cheaper model, it’s lasted almost 6 years. I agree that it’s hard to start once it’s been going for awhile but for me, that’s only been in the last year or so.” That account supports the possibility of long service for some owners while also highlighting a late-life warm-start problem.

With only 12 reviews, the scores cannot establish a failure rate or predict how every HBLT25CD will behave. They are useful for identifying recurring ownership themes, not for replacing an inspection of a used machine or a check of its service history.

Is the HBLT25CD worth buying?

It is most defensible for a buyer who accepts a manual-start petrol tool, is comfortable mixing fuel and servicing a foam filter, and can obtain the correct 2.4 mm line and model-specific parts. The wide swath and modest dry weight are useful specification advantages, while the 93.8 dB(A) sound pressure, recoil starting and mixed ease-of-use feedback are practical trade-offs.

Reasons to consider it

  • 432 mm cutting swath covers a broad strip in one pass.
  • 26 cm³ engine avoids battery charging and runtime limits.
  • Published parts identifiers make the consumables requirement clear: 2.4 mm line, part 528721006, and TORCH L7RTC plug.
  • An owner report documents almost six years of service, although that is a single experience.

Reasons to look elsewhere

  • Starting requires a primer, choke and recoil procedure rather than an electric start.
  • Warm-start difficulty is reported by an owner and ease of use averages only 2.5/5.
  • Fuel must be mixed at 50:1 with the correct synthetic lubricant.
  • Noise is high enough to require hearing protection.
  • Current price, warranty status and parts availability are not established here and can vary by seller and date.

How should you compare it with another trimmer?

There is no controlled competitor test for the HBLT25CD, so a fair comparison should use like-for-like specifications and ownership requirements rather than assuming that a larger number is automatically better.

Comparison area Questions to ask
Powertrain What engine displacement and rated output are published, and are the figures measured under the same standard?
Coverage What cutting width and line diameter are specified?
Weight Does the listed mass include the cutting attachment, guard, fuel or harness?
Starting Is it recoil, electric or battery start, and what is the warm-restart procedure?
Noise and vibration Are sound and vibration figures supplied at the operator position, and under what conditions?
Fuel and service Does the machine require a premix, what oil type is allowed, and how often are filters and plugs replaced?
Head and guard Are the correct spool, retainer and line-cutting blade available for the exact model?
Support Can the seller document warranty terms and current parts support in your country?

For a used HBLT25CD, inspect a cold start and a restart after it reaches operating temperature. Check that the head stops at trigger release, examine the guard and retainer, and ask which line diameter and fuel mixture the owner used. Those checks reveal more about an individual machine than the model’s headline output.

HBLT25CD troubleshooting checklist

Engine will not start cold

  • Confirm the tank contains fresh 50:1 fuel made with synthetic two-stroke oil.
  • Use the primer and choke sequence in the manual.
  • Inspect the TORCH L7RTC plug and replace it if worn or fouled.
  • Clean the foam filter and replace it if damaged.

Engine starts, then dies

  • Check for a restricted or over-oiled air filter.
  • Look for stale or incorrectly mixed fuel.
  • Inspect the fuel system and cap for leaks or blockage; stop and seek qualified service if a fuel fault is not obvious.

Head keeps spinning at idle

Stop the engine immediately and do not continue trimming. The manual specifically instructs stopping if the head remains rotating after the trigger is released; have the throttle, clutch or related mechanism inspected before use.

Line breaks or feeds poorly

  • Verify that the line is 2.4 mm and that the spool is wound in the correct direction.
  • Check for a damaged head, retainer or guard.
  • Remove grass packed around the spool only with the engine stopped and cool.

What should you buy with the trimmer?

The most directly justified consumable is compatible 2.4 mm replacement line, including the manual’s part number 528721006 where available. A TORCH L7RTC spark plug and a replacement HBLT25CD foam air filter are sensible service items. A model-specific grass deflector or retainer may be needed only if the original is damaged; verify fit against the exact model marking before ordering.

Retail stock, prices, warranty terms and affiliate eligibility are not fixed by the model specification and should be checked with the seller at the time of purchase. Do not assume a listing is compatible merely because it mentions a different Homelite trimmer with a similar engine size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Homelite HBLT25CD suitable for commercial landscaping work?

The available evidence does not include commercial-duty testing, duty-cycle data or a fleet warranty. Its 26 cm³ specification and mixed owner ratings can describe the machine, but they cannot establish suitability for sustained professional workloads; a commercial buyer should require documented support and service coverage from the seller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I check a used HBLT25CD before paying for it?

Ask to see a genuinely cold start and then restart it after it has warmed up. Inspect the guard, line head, retainer, fuel system and trigger return, and confirm that the seller can identify the correct 2.4 mm line and fuel ratio.

What does the 93.8 dB(A) figure tell me?

It is the operator-position sound-pressure value published in the manual, not a promise that every environment will measure exactly the same. Use hearing protection and follow local noise rules, especially near homes or during extended trimming.

Can I install a different cutting attachment on this trimmer?

Only attachments specified by Homelite for the HBLT25CD should be used. An attachment that physically fits can still change balance, guarding and overspeed risk, so compatibility must be confirmed from the model documentation or an authorized parts source.
