Home Assistant can control music in three practical ways: a tactile control such as a rotary dial, a touchscreen dashboard, or voice commands through Assist. Music Assistant provides the common playback layer: its players appear in Home Assistant as media-player entities, so dashboards, automations, and voice playback can address the same speakers. The best interface depends on whether you value physical volume access, visual browsing, or hands-free control.
There are two important boundaries. Music Assistant must be running before its Home Assistant integration can connect, and the integration requires Music Assistant server 2.4 or later. Also, Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition is a voice endpoint with a dial and audio output, not a dedicated music speaker: Home Assistant says its internal speaker is for voice feedback and is not optimized for music listening.

How can Home Assistant control music from one playback system?
Use Music Assistant as the playback layer, then choose one or more Home Assistant interfaces for control. Music Assistant combines supported streaming providers and personal files into a library and sends playback to compatible players. Its Home Assistant integration exposes those players as standard media_player entities, which means the same player can be operated from a dashboard card, an automation, or a voice intent.
Install and start the Music Assistant server first. The official Home Assistant integration requires server version 2.4 or later and connects only after that server is available. Once connected, Home Assistant can use its normal media-player control actions, including the actions documented for media-player entities. Depending on the player provider, Music Assistant may expose additional entities.

Music Assistant describes itself as free and open-source software, but support for a particular streaming service, file source, or speaker depends on the providers and devices currently supported. Check the current Music Assistant documentation before assuming a service or speaker will work.
What each interface actually controls
- Physical control: a dial or button changes a setting directly, especially volume, while a separate microphone-mute switch can provide a hardware cutoff on Voice Preview Edition.
- Touchscreen: a Home Assistant dashboard renders controls for a selected media-player entity, giving you visible state and transport buttons.
- Voice: Assist interprets a spoken request and Music Assistant handles the Search and Play intent for its players.
These are control methods, not three separate music libraries. If all three target the same Music Assistant player, a volume change made with a dial is reflected in the dashboard and affects subsequent voice playback.
What does a physical knob add to music control?
A physical knob gives you immediate, eyes-free adjustment. Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition has a rotary dial for volume and other input, a multipurpose button, a physical microphone-mute switch, an internal speaker, and a 3.5 mm stereo output. That combination is useful when you want to reach for a control rather than unlock a screen or repeat a voice command.
The dial is best understood as part of a voice endpoint, not as a universal music controller. The available documentation establishes the controls on Voice Preview Edition; it does not establish a plug-and-play ecosystem in which any generic rotary encoder can browse libraries, select albums, or control every player without additional configuration.
What the Voice Preview Edition hardware is—and is not
- Rotary dial: provides tactile adjustment and input.
- Multipurpose button: offers a physical action without opening a dashboard.
- Microphone mute switch: cuts power to the microphones, giving a hardware control for muting voice capture.
- 3.5 mm stereo output: lets you connect an external audio system.
- Internal speaker: intended for voice feedback, not optimized music listening.
Home Assistant’s product documentation states that “The built-in speaker is meant for voice feedback and is not optimized for listening to music.” Plan on an external speaker or stereo system for normal music playback. The device can issue voice commands and provide feedback while the external output handles the music.
When a knob is the right choice
- You change volume frequently and want a consistent physical target.
- You need a quick control when your hands are occupied or a screen is asleep.
- You want a hardware microphone mute in the same room as the voice endpoint.
- You are comfortable adding an external speaker for music.
A dial does not replace visual browsing. If you regularly scan albums, inspect queue order, or verify which player is active, pair it with a dashboard rather than expecting the physical controls to show library information.
How does a touchscreen dashboard control music?
A touchscreen presents the media-player entity visually. Home Assistant’s media-control card displays playback controls for an entity on a dashboard, while the media-player integration documents how those entities can be controlled from dashboards and used in automations. This makes a touchscreen the clearest option when you need status, transport controls, and a visible player selection.
To add the documented control surface, open the dashboard you want to edit, choose the option to add a card, select Media control, and choose the Music Assistant media-player entity. Save the dashboard, then test play, pause, volume, and any other controls shown for that entity. The exact buttons depend on what the player reports to Home Assistant.
The cited documentation does not prescribe a touchscreen model, display size, wall mount, always-on policy, or touch compatibility for a particular device. Choose hardware that can reliably display the Home Assistant dashboard you intend to use, and verify its power, network, and screen-wake behavior separately.

What a media-control card is good at
- Visual state: see whether the selected player is playing or paused and inspect the controls Home Assistant receives.
- Direct transport: tap the available play, pause, skip, and volume controls instead of speaking.
- Room-specific access: place a dashboard where people can reach the player without a phone.
- Automation context: the same media-player entity can be called by Home Assistant automations.
The card is a control surface, not proof that every Music Assistant browsing feature appears there. The available sources do not compare the card’s library-browsing depth with Music Assistant’s own interface, so use the dashboard for the controls it exposes and rely on another interface for deeper selection when necessary.

Home Assistant Assist can send a spoken request to Music Assistant through the built-in Search and Play intent. Music Assistant says this capability arrived in Home Assistant 2025.6 and works with Music Assistant players without custom sentences, blueprints, or an LLM for the documented playback path.
In practice, address an Assist-enabled device and ask it to play the music you want. Assist searches the available Music Assistant sources, resolves the request, and starts playback on the relevant Music Assistant player. You can then use additional spoken requests for ordinary playback changes supported by the player.
What the built-in voice path requires
- Run Music Assistant and connect its Home Assistant integration. The integration page specifies Music Assistant server 2.4 or later.
- Make sure the target player is exposed as a Music Assistant media-player entity in Home Assistant.
- Use an Assist endpoint, which may be Voice Preview Edition or another supported hardware/software endpoint.
- Speak a playback request that Assist can resolve through Search and Play.
Voice Preview Edition is one hardware option, not a requirement. Assist is also a software capability in Home Assistant, so you do not have to purchase that device to use voice playback. More complex requests may need other voice configuration; the “no custom sentences, blueprints, or LLM” statement applies to the documented Search and Play starting capability, not to every possible voice workflow.
Why voice is convenient—and where it is weaker
Voice is fastest when you know what you want and cannot spare a hand. It is less informative when a request is ambiguous, when several artists or albums match, or when you want to browse visually. A screen can show choices; a voice endpoint may need a follow-up clarification. Language support and voice-processing behavior can change over time, so check current Home Assistant and Music Assistant documentation for your installation.

Choose a physical-first setup if…
You want a predictable volume gesture, a hardware microphone cutoff, and occasional voice commands. Connect the 3.5 mm output to an external speaker and use a dashboard elsewhere when you need to inspect queues or browse.
Choose a touchscreen-first setup if…
You select music visually, need to see state at a glance, or want a shared household control panel. Use the media-control card for the player entity and add other dashboard elements only after the basic controls work.
Choose voice-first control if…
You start playback while cooking, working, or entering a room with no free hand. Use Assist’s built-in Search and Play path, but keep a screen or physical control available for ambiguous searches and detailed browsing.

How do I set up Music Assistant as the shared foundation?
Follow this order so interface problems are not mistaken for playback-server problems.
- Install and start Music Assistant. Confirm that the server is running before opening the Home Assistant integration. The integration documentation requires server version 2.4 or later.
- Add the integration. In Home Assistant, open Settings, go to Devices & services, choose Add integration, and select Music Assistant. Point it at the running Music Assistant server when prompted.
- Check discovered entities. Open the Music Assistant integration entry and verify that your intended players appear as
media_playerentities. - Test a basic media-player action. From the entity’s controls, try play, pause, and volume. This confirms Home Assistant can reach the player before you build a dashboard or voice workflow.
- Confirm provider support. Add the streaming or file providers you actually use in Music Assistant, then verify that the desired content and target speaker are available. Provider and player support can change.
If the integration cannot connect, first check that Music Assistant is running and meets the 2.4-or-later requirement. If it connects but a player is missing, investigate that player’s provider support rather than changing dashboard cards or voice sentences.
How do I add the touchscreen control surface?
- Open the Home Assistant dashboard you want to use.
- Enter dashboard edit mode and select Add card.
- Choose Media control, then select the Music Assistant media-player entity.
- Save the card and test the controls on the actual display.
- If the card shows the wrong room or player, edit the card and select the intended entity instead of creating a second playback setup.
The official media-control card documentation explains the card’s supported configuration. The media-player integration documentation explains the entity model and control actions used by dashboards and automations.
How do I use voice playback without custom sentences?
With Music Assistant connected and a player available, use an Assist endpoint and make a natural request to play an artist, album, track, or other content that Music Assistant can resolve. The built-in Search and Play intent is the documented starting path; Music Assistant says it works with its players out of the box from Home Assistant 2025.6.
- Wake your Assist endpoint.
- Ask it to play the desired music.
- Wait for Assist to resolve the request and start the Music Assistant player.
- Use a follow-up playback request if you need to pause, resume, skip, or change volume.
If the request is not resolved, simplify the wording and verify that the content exists in a configured provider. Do not add a blueprint or custom sentence merely because the basic Search and Play path failed; first confirm the server, integration, player entity, and provider.
Can Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition play music?
Yes, it can participate in music control, but its built-in speaker should not be treated as a music-listening speaker. Home Assistant explicitly says the internal speaker is intended for voice feedback and is not optimized for music. Connect an external speaker through the 3.5 mm stereo output and use Music Assistant to control playback.
This distinction matters when planning a room. Voice Preview Edition can hear Assist requests, provide voice feedback, and offer a dial and mute switch, while the external audio system supplies the music. Calling it an all-in-one smart speaker would overstate what the product documentation supports.

Music Assistant is not discovered
Start the Music Assistant server before adding the Home Assistant integration, then confirm the server is version 2.4 or later. A stopped server or an older version prevents the documented connection path.

The dashboard card is empty or controls do nothing
Edit the media-control card and verify that it targets the intended Music Assistant media_player entity. Then test the entity directly from Home Assistant. If direct controls fail, solve the player or provider issue before changing the dashboard.
Voice requests do not start playback
Confirm that Assist is running on the endpoint, Music Assistant is connected, and the target player entity is available. Search and Play is built in from Home Assistant 2025.6, but it still depends on content that Music Assistant can find and a player it can control.
The Voice Preview Edition sounds weak for music
That behavior is expected if you are using its internal speaker. The product documentation limits that speaker to voice feedback; connect an external speaker to the 3.5 mm output for music listening.

What does this mean for privacy and local processing?
The documented hardware mute switch on Voice Preview Edition gives you a physical way to cut microphone power. Beyond that specific control, the sources here do not establish a complete comparison of voice-processing locations, privacy policies, or language coverage among Assist endpoints. Treat those as separate selection criteria and verify the current documentation for the endpoint and voice pipeline you plan to deploy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Music Assistant free to use with Home Assistant?
Music Assistant describes its software as free and open source. You still need compatible hardware, a running server, and any provider accounts required by the music services or files you choose.
Do I need Voice Preview Edition to use Home Assistant music voice control?
No. Voice Preview Edition is one possible Assist endpoint, while Assist itself is a Home Assistant software capability. Use another supported endpoint if it better fits your room, microphone, or speaker arrangement.
Can I connect any USB or smart-home rotary knob to Home Assistant music controls?
The documented material confirms the rotary controls on Voice Preview Edition but does not establish a universal plug-and-play knob ecosystem. A generic controller may require its own integration and automation work, so verify support for the exact device before buying it for music browsing.
Why does my music service not appear in Music Assistant?
Music Assistant support is provider-specific and can change. Check the current provider documentation, confirm the service is configured, and verify that the target player is supported before troubleshooting the dashboard or voice layer.
