Most people use YouTube Music to search for a song and press play, but five less-obvious tools can change how you find, shape and save music. Samples turns discovery into a swipeable clip feed; custom radio lets you choose the artists and sound of a station; timed lyrics act as a seek control; Smart Downloads prepares an offline mix; and audio-only playback reduces data use while Premium background play keeps audio running outside the app. The exact menus and availability can differ by country, device, account and track. How do Samples turn swiping into useful music discovery?
Samples is a vertical feed of short music clips designed for quick decisions. YouTube describes it as “Discover new music with a swipe.” Instead of committing to a whole track or album, listen to a preview, then act immediately on the clip that catches you.
What can you do from a Sample?
- Save the track for later.
- Share it with someone else.
- Add it directly to a playlist.
- Start a radio station based on the song.
- Open the song’s album.
- Watch the full video.
- Use the song in a Short.
Those actions make the feed more than a passive stream. A clip can become a deliberate listening path: save several candidates, open an album when an artist’s sound is consistent, or start a station when you want related music without selecting every song yourself.

How do you open Samples?
- Open the YouTube Music app and select the Samples tab.
- Swipe through the short clips and listen for a track that fits the moment.
- Use the action controls on that clip to save, share, add it to a playlist, open the album, start a station, watch the full video or use the audio in a Short.
Samples is the better choice when you want breadth and speed. If you already know the artists you want, skip the feed and build a radio station so the recommendation system has clearer boundaries.

How do I make a YouTube Music radio station from artists I choose?
Use the custom radio builder when a preset station feels either too predictable or too random. You can select artists as inputs and then adjust the station’s mood, how much discovery you want versus familiar songs, and whether the mix favors popular tracks or deep cuts.
What should you tune first?

The same announcement says the updated experience is coming soon worldwide; rollout can vary by country, device and account, so its presence in your app is not guaranteed yet.
The announcement also describes a personalized podcast audio guide and reports more than 450 million artist discoveries in July 2026 on YouTube Music. It cites a catalog of over 300 million songs. How do you get a station that is neither too safe nor too chaotic?
- Start with two or more artists that share the style you want.
- Set the mood before changing the discovery slider; mood establishes the station’s basic direction.
- Choose a middle position between familiarity and discovery for a balanced first pass.
- Move toward deep cuts only after the station’s style is right; otherwise obscure tracks can hide a mismatch in mood.
- Save standout tracks to a playlist so the station can remain exploratory without losing your favorites.

Can timed lyrics jump to the exact section of a song?
Yes. When timed lyrics are available, the words appear in sync with the recording. Tap a lyric line and YouTube Music seeks directly to that part of the track. That makes lyrics a navigation tool, not just a display.
What are timed lyrics useful for?
- Karaoke: Jump back to the verse or chorus you want to practice.
- Language or pronunciation practice: Replay a line without dragging the progress bar.
- Finding a remembered phrase: Scan the words, tap the line and verify the surrounding section.

Why might the lyric control be missing?
Lyrics and account access vary by track, region and rollout. A song may have lyrics without synchronized timing, while another version of the same song may expose a different lyric experience. The Google Play listing and YouTube’s guide both note that features can differ by content and account, so an absent control does not necessarily indicate a problem with your phone.

How do you set up an offline mix?
- Open YouTube Music and go to the Downloads area or its download settings.
- Turn on Smart Downloads and allow the app to use your listening history for recommendations.
- For fixed listening, open a song, album, playlist or podcast episode and choose its Download action.
- Before a flight or commute, connect to Wi-Fi and open the Downloads section to confirm that the items are present.
- Use Shuffle downloads when you want an offline mix rather than a particular album or playlist.
Smart Downloads is history-based, so the mix can change as your listening changes. Manual downloads are more predictable for a trip, a workout sequence or a podcast series.
How often must an offline device reconnect?
Downloaded content requires the device to reconnect to YouTube Music at least once every 30 days. Reconnect before that window expires so the app can verify access and refresh the download state. When should I use audio-only mode instead of video playback?
Choose audio-only mode when the song matters more than its video, your connection is limited, or you want to reduce the amount of video data loaded. The track continues as audio without fetching the music video, which can make playback more practical on a slow or metered connection.
What does Premium background play add?
Premium background play keeps music or podcasts playing after the mobile app is closed. Music background play, music downloads and ad-free music are Premium benefits. Podcast behavior can differ by content and region, so the same background or download controls should not be assumed for every podcast.

Which phones, computers and watches can use YouTube Music?
The Google Play listing says YouTube Music works on phones, desktops, smart speakers, smart TVs, cars and smartwatches. That broad device coverage lets you move from a Samples discovery session on a phone to speakers at home or a car interface without changing services, although controls and feature availability can differ on each device.
YouTube has also announced a partnership bringing YouTube Music to Garmin watches. A Wear OS smartwatch is another plausible accessory for wrist-based controls, but no particular model is required for the features in this guide. Treat watch support as device- and region-dependent rather than assuming every watch has identical downloads, lyrics or queue controls.
