If Helldivers 2 shows GameGuard Error 114, an initialization or fatal anti-cheat message, error 0xc0000142, or a Steam file error, use the repair path that matches the message. Error 114 is the legacy GameGuard route: run the GameGuard cleanup and compatibility steps first. Helldivers 2 has since moved to Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC), so a launch failure after that transition can come from leftover GameGuard files, stale game data, security software, drivers, Windows state, or damaged Steam files. The most reliable sequence is targeted cleanup, a full Windows restart, Steam file verification, and then Arrowhead Player Support if the failure remains.

These branches can overlap. For example, a machine that still has old GameGuard files may also have damaged Steam files, and security software can interfere with either anti-cheat implementation. Work through the matching branch before trying broad, irreversible changes.

What should you prepare before changing anti-cheat files?
The official procedures are local Windows and Steam changes. Close Helldivers 2 and Steam before deleting or uninstalling anything, and sign in to Windows with an account that can approve administrator prompts.
- Record the exact error code and wording, including whether it appears before or after the first splash screen.
- Know where Steam installed Helldivers 2. You can reach it without guessing the drive letter through Library → right-click HELLDIVERS 2 → Manage → Browse Local Files.
- Save work in other programs before restarting. The transition procedure specifically requires Restart, not merely Shut down.
- If you temporarily change antivirus or firewall settings for diagnosis, plan to restore protection immediately after the launch test.

For an explicit Error 114 or “GameGuard Initialize Error,” begin with the legacy GameGuard route. It combines administrator compatibility settings, a clean GameGuard reinstall, and checks for software that can interfere with initialization.
1. Set the Helldivers 2 executable to run as administrator
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click HELLDIVERS 2, choose Manage, then select Browse Local Files.
- Open the
binfolder. - Right-click
helldivers2and choose Properties. - Open the Compatibility tab and enable Run this program as administrator. Select Apply, then OK.
On Windows 11, Arrowhead also recommends trying Windows 8 compatibility mode from the same Compatibility tab. Use that mode as a compatibility test for Error 114; it is not a general requirement for every Windows 11 installation.
2. Reinstall GameGuard from the installation folder
- Return to the Helldivers 2 installation directory and open
tools. - Right-click
gguninstand choose Run as administrator. - Wait for the uninstall operation to finish completely.
- Right-click
GGSetupand choose Run as administrator. - Launch Helldivers 2 again from Steam.
Arrowhead notes that “Error 114 can trigger for various reasons.” That wording matters: the message does not establish that a player cheated or that malicious software is present. Ordinary utility programs and security tools can also interfere with GameGuard.
3. Close possible utility conflicts
Before the next launch, exit nonessential utilities that hook into games, display overlays, monitor hardware, alter input, or otherwise run alongside the game. Arrowhead specifically warns that Error 114 can be caused by non-hack-related programs. Treat this as an isolation step: close one group of utilities, launch once, and then restore them one at a time if the game starts.
4. Check antivirus and firewall interference
Windows Defender or another firewall and antivirus product may block anti-cheat files or their network activity. For diagnosis, Arrowhead recommends temporarily disabling the security software or adding exceptions for nProtect GameGuard and HELLDIVERS 2.

Prefer an exception when your security product supports a precise rule. If you disable protection, do so only long enough for one controlled launch test, disconnect from untrusted networks if appropriate, and turn protection back on immediately afterward. A successful launch with protection disabled indicates an interference path; it does not justify leaving the computer unprotected.
5. Consider the uncommon connected-drive issue
Arrowhead reports that an older connected hard drive has rarely caused registry creation to hang during GameGuard startup. This is an advanced, uncommon branch, not a first-line fix. If the administrator setting, GameGuard reinstall, utility isolation, and security check do not change Error 114, shut down safely, disconnect the older secondary drive, start Windows, and test again. Reconnect it after the test if it is not implicated.
How do I fix 0xc0000142 or a crash after Helldivers 2 switched to EAC?
Use the post-transition cleanup path when the failure began after the anti-cheat change, shows 0xc0000142, or does not identify Error 114 but appears to involve anti-cheat startup. Arrowhead’s transition guidance calls removing leftover GameGuard files the main fix for a 0xc0000142 error in that situation, while also requiring a restart, driver and Windows updates, and Steam verification.

- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
%appdata%ArrowheadHelldivers2and press Enter. - Delete the contents of that
Helldivers2folder. Delete the contents, not unrelated folders elsewhere in%appdata%.
This removes the local Helldivers 2 data that the transition procedure identifies for cleanup. If Windows reports that a file is in use, close Steam and any Helldivers 2 process in Task Manager, then try again.
2. Remove the old GameGuard components
- In Steam, open Library → right-click HELLDIVERS 2 → Manage → Browse Local Files.
- Open the
EasyAntiCheatfolder. - Run
GGuninst.exe. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one. - Return to the game directory and inspect
binGameGuard. - If that GameGuard folder remains, delete the entire
GameGuardfolder.
Do not delete the whole bin directory at this stage. The targeted removal is intended to clear legacy components while leaving the rest of the installation available for Steam to check.
3. Update Windows and device drivers
Install pending Windows updates and current drivers for the hardware used by the game, then restart the PC. A restart is an explicit part of Arrowhead’s procedure; do not substitute a normal Shut down and assume it has performed the same state reset.
4. Verify the installation in Steam
After the restart, use Steam’s Verify integrity of game files command. The exact procedure is in the next section. Launch only after Steam reports that verification has completed.

5. Use the deeper reacquisition step only if needed
If the crash or 0xc0000142 remains after the targeted cleanup, restart, and verification, Arrowhead’s deeper step is to delete the bin and data folders, then verify integrity again so Steam reacquires them. Delete only those two named folders from the Helldivers 2 installation directory. Do not remove unrelated Steam library folders or other game directories.
Arrowhead describes this transition article as saying that deleting the GameGuard folder is “the main fix for any 0xc0000142 error!” Read that as the article’s guidance for the post-EAC transition scenario, not as a guarantee that every 0xc0000142 on every Windows system has the same cause.
How do I verify Helldivers 2 files on Steam?
Steam’s integrity check replaces missing or altered game files and is the official response to an out-of-date-file message such as 0x44415441. It is also the file-repair step in Arrowhead’s post-EAC workflow.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click HELLDIVERS 2 and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files in the Properties window.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait until Steam finishes the scan and any reacquisition. Do not launch the game while the process is still running.
- Close the Properties window and launch Helldivers 2 again.
Arrowhead identifies 0x44415441 as an out-of-date-file error and directs players to this Steam operation. If Steam reports that files were reacquired but the same anti-cheat error returns, continue with the branch that matches the code rather than repeatedly verifying without changing the underlying conflict.

What other software and Windows conditions can block anti-cheat startup?
Security software, background applications, connectivity, third-party anti-cheat components, drivers, and Windows state are all plausible variables, but none is proven to be the cause of every Helldivers 2 failure. Steam’s secure-connection guidance lists these categories as possible causes of secure-game connection failures, which makes them useful diagnostic checks rather than universal explanations.
Security rules and exceptions
Check both Windows Security and any third-party firewall or antivirus product. Look for blocked or quarantined entries associated with Helldivers 2, nProtect GameGuard, or Easy Anti-Cheat. Install pending Windows updates and the current driver package for the affected device, then use Restart. If the failure began immediately after a driver or Windows change, note that timing for support rather than repeatedly changing several components at once; a record of what changed makes the eventual diagnosis more useful.

Connectivity and third-party anti-cheat software
Steam’s guidance includes connectivity and other anti-cheat applications among possible secure-connection variables. If you run another game’s anti-cheat service or security suite, close that game’s launcher and its background service before testing Helldivers 2.
