The best HDMI ARC converter is the one that matches your amplifier’s input and your TV’s ARC/eARC capabilities. Choose an optical or analog extractor for an older receiver, powered speakers, or headphones; choose an ARC/eARC-to-HDMI adapter when the receiver has an HDMI audio input; and choose an eARC, HDMI 2.1 model for lossless Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, 4K/120, or 8K systems. Every setup still depends on the TV port being labeled ARC or eARC, a compatible audio mode (often selected with EDID), and an output your receiver can decode.

What does an HDMI ARC converter do?

An HDMI ARC converter takes the audio that a television sends back through its HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) or eARC port and presents that audio on another output. Depending on the design, that output may be optical S/PDIF, analog RCA or 3.5 mm stereo, or a separate HDMI connection for an older AV receiver.

ARC is useful because one HDMI cable can carry sound from the TV’s built-in apps, antenna tuner, and devices connected directly to the TV back to an amplifier. A converter makes that return audio usable by equipment that lacks ARC or eARC. It does not automatically upgrade a receiver’s decoding, add wireless audio, or make an ARC-only television deliver eARC formats.

Some products do more than extract TV audio. An ARC/eARC-to-HDMI adapter can de-embed audio and send it to an HDMI-equipped amplifier while passing video through to the display. Check the product architecture carefully: a source-audio extractor for a game console or disc player is not necessarily a TV ARC extractor.

Which type should I buy for my equipment?

Start with the input on the amplifier or speakers, not the converter’s marketing name. The table below maps common systems to the appropriate architecture.

Your amplifier or speaker input Converter type What to prioritize
Optical (Toslink) Optical ARC extractor ARC support, optical output, Dolby/DTS handling, and a suitable EDID mode
RCA or 3.5 mm analog ARC extractor with stereo down-mix PCM 2.0 output, volume-control behavior, and the correct analog connector
HDMI input but no ARC/eARC ARC/eARC-to-HDMI audio adapter HDMI generation, audio formats, EDID, CEC, and video pass-through
eARC television with a high-bitrate receiver eARC-to-HDMI adapter Lossless formats, multichannel LPCM, HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, and 4K/120 or 8K pass-through if needed
Headphones or powered speakers Optical or analog ARC extractor 3.5 mm/RCA output, stereo down-mixing, and stable TV volume control

Do not buy an HDMI-to-optical converter intended only for a source device unless its specifications explicitly say it accepts TV ARC/eARC. A television’s ARC signal travels in the opposite direction from ordinary HDMI source audio, so the port direction matters.

What is the difference between ARC and eARC?

ARC is the older return-audio system and is commonly limited to stereo PCM or compressed Dolby and DTS formats. eARC has substantially more capacity and can carry higher-bitrate formats such as multichannel uncompressed PCM, Dolby TrueHD-based Atmos, and DTS-HD Master Audio or DTS:X when every device in the chain supports them.

ARC compatibility

An ARC television can send audio through an optical or analog extractor, but the available format is normally constrained by the TV and the extractor. Products such as the KOA HDMI-ARCEXTRACT list PCM 2.0, Dolby 5.1, and DTS 5.1, with down-mixing for two-channel outputs. Optical output is often the practical choice for an older surround receiver, but it is not a route to the highest-bitrate Atmos formats.

eARC compatibility

eARC requires an eARC-capable TV, an eARC-capable converter, and an amplifier that accepts the desired format. HDCVT’s HDV-MB08 lists Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X, while DVDO’s AudioE-2 lists LPCM 7.1, Dolby TrueHD/Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X. Those are manufacturer specifications; the actual result still depends on the TV’s audio settings and the receiver’s decoder.

Mixed ARC and eARC systems

A converter can sometimes bridge an eARC television to an older HDMI receiver, but the output format may be limited by the older receiver or by the converter’s EDID profile. If any link falls back to ARC-level capability, lossless or uncompressed formats may be unavailable. Treat the weakest device in the TV–converter–receiver chain as the practical limit.

How do I connect an ARC television to an optical or analog system?

Use this procedure when the receiver, sound system, or headphones have optical, RCA, or 3.5 mm inputs but no ARC socket.

  1. Identify the TV port. Locate the HDMI socket labeled ARC or eARC. A regular HDMI input will not send return audio.
  2. Connect the TV to the converter’s ARC input. Use a known-good HDMI cable. Plug it into the television’s labeled port and the converter port marked ARC/eARC, not a generic HDMI output.
  3. Connect the audio output. Run an optical cable to the receiver’s optical input, or connect RCA/3.5 mm to the converter’s analog output. On a model such as the Zenty ZT-AT4K, use optical because its 3.5 mm jack does not carry HDMI-ARC audio.
  4. Power the converter. Use the supplied power adapter if the unit requires one. Some converters will not establish ARC until powered.
  5. Enable TV audio return. In the TV’s sound menu, enable HDMI-CEC and ARC or eARC. Manufacturers use different names for CEC, so look for the HDMI-control option as well as the audio-output option.
  6. Select the TV’s digital-audio format. Start with PCM if you hear silence or intermittent sound. Once stereo works, test Bitstream, Dolby Digital, or the TV’s passthrough setting if your extractor and receiver support it.
  7. Select the receiver input. Choose the optical, RCA, or 3.5 mm input assigned to the converter and raise the receiver volume gradually.

Optical and analog outputs generally provide the most predictable results with older equipment. Analog outputs are normally stereo, even when the television receives a multichannel soundtrack; the converter must down-mix it.

How do I connect an eARC television to an HDMI receiver?

An ARC/eARC-to-HDMI adapter is the right architecture when the older amplifier has HDMI inputs but no ARC/eARC return channel.

  1. Check the amplifier’s HDMI audio capability. Confirm that it accepts audio on the converter’s HDMI output and identify the input you will use. An HDMI socket used only for video may not decode the required audio formats.
  2. Connect the TV and adapter. Run HDMI from the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the adapter’s ARC/eARC input. Follow the labels; reversing the direction can produce video with no return audio.
  3. Connect the adapter to the receiver. Use the adapter’s HDMI audio output and select that input on the amplifier.
  4. Wire video sources according to the adapter’s design. If the unit provides pass-through, connect sources and display exactly as shown in its manual. A model rated for 8K60 or 4K120 still needs compatible cables, sources, display inputs, and receiver pass-through.
  5. Set EDID deliberately. Choose an EDID profile that matches the receiver. A stereo or optical profile may prevent the TV from offering multichannel formats; an aggressive multichannel profile can cause silence on a stereo-only amplifier.
  6. Enable CEC if you want remote volume control. CEC pass-through can let the TV remote adjust the receiver, but behavior varies by brands and by which device is powered on.

HDCVT’s HDV-MB08 is specified at 18 Gbps and up to 4K60, while DVDO AudioE-2 is specified at 48 Gbps with 8K60 and 4K120 pass-through. Choose based on the highest video signal in your system, not only the audio format.

Which audio formats can an ARC converter deliver?

Format support is determined by the TV output setting, the converter’s processing, and the receiving device. A converter cannot restore information that the TV has already down-mixed or that an optical link cannot carry.

  • PCM 2.0: The safest setting for stereo amplifiers, analog outputs, and troubleshooting. KOA, NÖRDIC, and Lindy products document stereo-oriented operation or down-mixing.
  • Compressed Dolby and DTS: Some ARC extractors pass Dolby 5.1 or DTS 5.1 to optical or HDMI. Confirm that the receiver supports the exact format selected.
  • Multichannel LPCM: More likely with eARC and an HDMI output. DVDO lists LPCM 7.1 for AudioE-2.
  • Dolby Atmos and DTS:X: These can mean different transport formats. Lossless Dolby TrueHD-based Atmos and DTS:X require an eARC-capable chain and a receiver that decodes them; a compressed TV-streaming format may work over an ARC-level connection.
  • Analog stereo: RCA and 3.5 mm outputs are two-channel. A down-mixer converts surround content to stereo rather than preserving discrete channels.

When a specification lists a format, read it as capability under compatible conditions rather than a guarantee for every TV app. Streaming apps, disc players, game consoles, and broadcast tuners may expose different output options.

Why do EDID and CEC matter?

EDID is the capability information exchanged over HDMI. An extractor with EDID selections can present the TV with a defined audio profile, helping it choose stereo PCM, compressed surround, or a higher-capability eARC mode. NÖRDIC SGM-279 and DVDO AudioE-2 document EDID controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the EDID mode that matches the receiving device. Use a two-channel or PCM mode for analog speakers and older receivers; use a multichannel or eARC mode only when the amplifier can decode those formats. If the TV stops offering surround sound after connecting the converter, revisit EDID before replacing cables.

CEC is the HDMI control channel. CEC pass-through may allow TV-remote volume, coordinated power, and input switching. KOA, NÖRDIC, Lindy, and DVDO list CEC support. CEC is not universal automation, however: different manufacturers implement it differently, and a receiver may need its own HDMI-control setting enabled.

What video specifications should I check?

Audio extraction does not remove the need to match video bandwidth. Check these items before purchase:

  • Resolution and refresh rate: A 4K/60 converter is adequate for 4K televisions and sources limited to 60 Hz. It is not a substitute for 4K/120 gaming support.
  • HDMI generation and bandwidth: HDMI 2.1 designs offer more headroom. DVDO AudioE-2 lists 48 Gbps, 8K60, and 4K120; HDCVT HDV-MB08 lists 18 Gbps and up to 4K60.
  • Pass-through behavior: Verify whether the converter passes HDR, variable refresh, and other video features you use. An audio-only adapter may not be placed in the video path at all.
  • Cable capability: A converter’s published maximum assumes suitable HDMI cables and compatible ports on the TV, receiver, and source.

If your priority is audio from TV apps and your sources plug directly into the receiver, a lower-bandwidth optical extractor may be sufficient. If the converter sits between a 4K/120 console and the display, select a model whose pass-through rating covers that signal.

How do I troubleshoot silence, stereo-only sound, or control problems?

No audio at all

  • Confirm the HDMI cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC-labeled port and the converter’s ARC/eARC input.
  • Power-cycle the TV, converter, and receiver after enabling CEC and ARC; HDMI handshakes are renegotiated during startup.
  • Set the TV audio output to PCM, then test other formats after PCM works.
  • Choose the receiver input connected to the converter and verify the converter’s power indicator.

Only stereo is available

Check whether the output is analog or optical, whether the EDID switch is set to stereo, and whether the TV is configured for PCM. Analog outputs cannot provide discrete surround; optical may be limited to compressed formats. For uncompressed multichannel or lossless Atmos, the entire path normally needs eARC and HDMI.

Audio cuts out or crackles

Try a shorter, certified HDMI cable, remove intermediate switches, and test PCM. An EDID profile requesting a format the receiver cannot decode can also cause dropouts. Reconnect devices in this order: TV, converter, then receiver, allowing each to finish its HDMI handshake.

The TV remote will not change volume

Enable CEC on the TV and receiver, and make sure the converter’s CEC pass-through is enabled if it has a switch. Some optical and analog installations cannot relay volume commands; in that case, use the receiver’s remote or a universal remote.

Video is limited to 4K/60 or will not display

Compare the source’s resolution and refresh rate with the converter’s pass-through rating. HDCVT HDV-MB08 is specified to 4K60, while DVDO AudioE-2 is specified to 4K120 and 8K60. Connect a high-refresh source directly to a compatible display input if the converter is not rated for it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check before ordering?

  1. TV port: It must be labeled ARC or eARC; verify the television manual if the label is unclear.
  2. Receiver input: Match optical, RCA, 3.5 mm, or HDMI exactly. Do not assume every jack on a multifunction converter carries ARC audio.
  3. Audio goal: Decide whether you need stereo, compressed 5.1, multichannel LPCM, or lossless Atmos/DTS:X.
  4. Video goal: Note your highest resolution and refresh rate, especially 4K/120 or 8K.
  5. EDID controls: Prefer a model with selectable profiles when the receiver’s capabilities are unusual or mixed.
  6. CEC behavior: Look for pass-through if TV-remote volume and coordinated power matter, but treat it as compatibility-dependent.
  7. Power and placement: Confirm the adapter’s power requirement and leave room for HDMI cables without stressing the TV port.

Is an HDMI ARC converter worth it for an older receiver?

Yes, when replacing the receiver would be unnecessary. An optical or analog extractor can bring TV-app audio to older equipment at low complexity, while an HDMI eARC adapter can preserve more advanced formats for an HDMI-equipped amplifier. The trade-off is that the converter becomes another compatibility point: format support, EDID, CEC, and video pass-through must all match your system.

For a simple two-channel setup, choose the fewest features that provide the required output. For a high-refresh gaming or lossless Atmos system, spend the selection effort on eARC, HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, and receiver decoding rather than on the number of connectors.

How should I choose among the listed designs?

Choose KOA HDMI-ARCEXTRACT or Lindy 38363 when optical or analog stereo is the primary requirement and down-mixing is acceptable. NÖRDIC SGM-279 adds 4K60, optical and 3.5 mm outputs, EDID modes, and CEC pass-through. HDCVT HDV-MB08 is aimed at HDMI output with 18 Gbps and 4K60 support. Avantree HAX05 is a 4K/60 HDMI 2.0 ARC converter; its manufacturer page listed $39.99 at crawl time, so verify current regional pricing before buying. Choose DVDO AudioE-2 when the system genuinely needs HDMI 2.1, 48 Gbps, 4K120 or 8K60 pass-through, and high-bitrate eARC formats. Select Zenty ZT-AT4K only when its optical ARC path matches your need, because its 3.5 mm output does not carry HDMI-ARC audio.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an HDMI ARC converter with a TV that has only regular HDMI ports?

No. The television must provide a port specifically labeled ARC or eARC and support audio return in its settings. A normal HDMI input receives video but does not send the TV’s app or tuner audio back to an extractor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will an ARC converter make every sound source play Dolby Atmos?

No. Atmos availability depends on the source app or device, the TV’s output setting, the converter’s format support, and the receiver’s decoder. Lossless Atmos generally requires an eARC-capable HDMI chain, while some compressed Atmos streams may work under narrower conditions.

Can I connect both optical and HDMI outputs from one extractor at the same time?

Some models provide multiple active outputs, but behavior is model-specific and may change with EDID selection. Check the manual before wiring both, and set the audio profile for the device that has the strictest format limits.

Does CEC guarantee that my TV remote will control receiver volume?

No. CEC pass-through enables the control path, but TV and receiver implementations differ. Both devices may need HDMI control enabled, and optical or analog-only connections may not relay volume commands reliably.
