Haunted Chocolatier has no release date or window, and PC is the only confirmed platform. It is a single-player RPG/simulation in development by Eric Barone, the solo creator of Stardew Valley. Its central loop is different: gather ingredients, make chocolate, and run a shop in a haunted castle, with more emphasis on action-RPG combat, equipment, monsters, and boss fights. Barone was still working on the game in October 2026; he has not announced a year, console version, co-op mode, or pre-order.

When does Haunted Chocolatier come out?
There is no announced release date, release year, or release window. In its official FAQ, Barone says he cannot commit to a date or even an estimated year because he wants to work without that pressure. His latest public updates in 2026 describe ongoing development, not a launch schedule.
The often-repeated 2030 date is not an announcement. On January 29, 2026, Barone explained that he had been asked in 2025 whether the game might come out within five years and replied, “I hope so.” He said that was not the same as saying the game was coming in 2030; his position remains that it will be released when it is done.

That distinction matters because there is no dependable countdown to calculate. A developer’s hope, a database entry, or a speculative guess is not a release window. GameSpot’s game hub has displayed “Dec 31, 2097,” but that is a database placeholder, not a date announced by Barone.
What the development timeline does—and does not—tell you
Barone announced the game on October 21, 2021, and said development had begun in 2020. Work slowed while he handled the large Stardew Valley 1.6 update, then resumed more fully. In a December 5, 2024 update, he said he was returning to the project and had already created a vertical slice—a playable section intended to demonstrate the game’s core experience. That was evidence of progress, not a promise that the finished game was close.
In September 2025, Barone said work on Stardew Valley 1.7 might slow Haunted Chocolatier somewhat, although he expected to take a more supervisory role on the update. A May 2026 report by Game Informer, quoted by Kotaku, said he was spending about five days a week on Haunted Chocolatier and two on Stardew Valley. On August 30, 2026, Barone said he was making progress but would not rush or compromise the game’s quality. In an October 12, 2026 interview with British GQ, he was still working alone and said he would not show the game to anyone until it was ready.
These are useful status updates, but none supplies a date. Barone has also said that he will not release the game until he is satisfied with it. The schedule is therefore intentionally open-ended.
What platforms will Haunted Chocolatier be on?
PC is the only platform Barone has confirmed. The official FAQ says it is the one platform he is “100% certain about.” He also says he has every intention of bringing the game to other major platforms, but has not identified or committed to specific consoles.
That means PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2 versions are not confirmed, nor is a simultaneous PC-and-console launch. Barone expects to get help with console ports when the game is closer to completion. The fact that Stardew Valley later appeared on consoles and mobile is precedent for his willingness to support more platforms, not confirmation of a particular Haunted Chocolatier version.

A specific storefront is also unannounced. There is no Steam page in the information available as of October 2026, and no confirmed Epic Games Store or GOG listing. Steam Deck verification, mobile availability, price, system requirements, and a release-day platform list have not been announced. The official game site is the project’s hub, but it is not a substitute for a store page or a platform commitment.
Is Haunted Chocolatier multiplayer or co-op?
It is currently single-player, and Barone has no current plans to add multiplayer. That is the answer in the official FAQ. It does not rule out every possible future change, but players should not treat co-op as a planned feature.
Stardew Valley eventually gained one-to-four-player co-op after launching as a single-player game. That history does not predict what will happen here. Barone’s stated position for this game is no current multiplayer plans, and speculation about what unofficial mods might do is not a developer-backed feature.
What kind of game is Haunted Chocolatier?
It is a town-focused RPG/simulation built around a chocolate shop, with a stronger action-RPG emphasis than Stardew Valley. You play as a chocolatier living in a haunted castle, gather ingredients, make chocolates, and sell them in a shop while getting to know people in a new town. Barone describes it as a “town game,” but says its core gameplay and theme differ from his earlier game.
The shop takes the place of the farm as the center of the player’s livelihood. The game’s basic loop, as Barone described it in the announcement, is gathering ingredients, making chocolate, and running the shop. He has also said that this is not all there is to the game: adventuring and combat are a more substantial part of the design than they are in Stardew Valley.
What has been shown about the shop and chocolate-making?
Official footage has shown shop customization, including different countertop styles, chocolates displayed for customers, and ghosts helping carry chocolates or staff the counter. Reported trailer footage also shows a portal from the shop to an area for combat and ingredient gathering, as well as gift-giving with townspeople. These are glimpses of a work in progress, not a guarantee that every interface or mechanic will ship unchanged.

Barone confirmed in a May 10, 2025 blog post that there will be more than one way to make chocolate. He has described one approach as more intuitive and whimsical, alongside more conventional or mechanical methods. The point is that chocolate-making is not presented as a single mandatory minigame; the different methods are intended to give players reasons to choose between approaches. Their final details have not been fully specified.
How does combat work?
Combat is being built from scratch rather than copied from Stardew Valley. Footage and official descriptions have shown swords, a bow and arrow, shields, and other off-hand items. Barone’s combat explanation describes blocking as a deliberate option: many attacks can be blocked with a shield, and a successful block usually stuns the enemy, creating an opportunity to attack faster. Other off-hand items are intended to support different play styles, while charging into a fight is also possible.

Are relationships and fishing included?
Relationships are planned, but their exact form is undecided. In a 2021 interview with VGKami, Barone confirmed relationships “like in Stardew Valley” and said he expected to approach some things differently. He has not confirmed marriage, children, or a list of romance candidates, so it is too early to assume the same relationship milestones or options.
Fishing has also been confirmed by Barone in a social-media reply, as reported by PC Gamer. No detailed description of its mechanics or minigame has been provided. As with the other features shown or discussed before release, details may change during development.
Is Haunted Chocolatier a Stardew Valley sequel or set in the same world?
It is not confirmed to be a sequel, and the shared-world question remains unanswered. Barone has said he wants Haunted Chocolatier to have its own identity. The official FAQ says he is not ready to reveal whether it takes place in the world of Stardew Valley; a separate statement reported by Polygon described “some connection,” but did not establish a shared setting or direct sequel.

Barone has said Haunted Chocolatier is “way bigger” than Stardew Valley in the number of maps and monsters, the depth of its item system, and the equipment available. That is his description of scope in a May 2026 Game Informer interview, quoted by Kotaku; it is not a measured comparison of finished games. The project is still in development, so its scope and systems may change.
Is Haunted Chocolatier a horror game?
Barone has described it as creepy, not as an evil or relentlessly frightening game. In the 2021 announcement, he said he intended it to be “positive, uplifting and life-affirming,” even though the setting includes a haunted castle and ghosts. His image for the contrast was that Stardew Valley channels the energy of the sun, while Haunted Chocolatier channels the energy of the moon.
In 2026 comments reported by Kotaku from Game Informer, Barone expressed interest in a darker atmosphere while distinguishing “creepy” from “totally horrifying.” The available description supports an eerie mood alongside a positive outlook, not a claim that the game is a conventional horror title. Is the game cancelled, and who is making it?
Barone said in January 2026 that the game was not abandoned or being folded into Stardew Valley; he was still developing it in August and October. The work has taken longer than some players expected, but the dated updates describe ongoing development rather than cancellation.
Barone—also known as ConcernedApe—is directing, designing, programming, drawing, and composing the game on his own. He has said he will likely bring in help for console ports and localization when development is close to finished, while continuing to self-publish. The game uses a new engine written in C# with MonoGame, rather than the technology stack used for Stardew Valley. Barone has explained that he moved from XNA to MonoGame because MonoGame is cross-platform, open-source, and actively maintained, while XNA is no longer maintained. Some code from Stardew Valley can be reused, but this is not a project made by pasting the old game into a new setting.
He has also ruled out early access, crowdfunding, and pre-orders. In a December 2024 update, he said he did not want those approaches to create additional pressure to finish on a particular timeline. The game is self-published, but no price, rating, runtime, sales figure, or official store listing has been announced.
