There is no verified, universally best Dead by Daylight preset for smoother performance on Hartshorne Mall, the map many players call the “Terrifier map.” The most useful approach is to compare the upscaling options available on your setup—FSR and XeSS where offered—against your current settings, then keep the combination that improves motion without making the scene harder to read. Official PTB notes can help identify the map, but PTB observations are not measurements of a later live build.
What is the Terrifier map officially called?
The official name used in Dead by Daylight’s PTB notes is Hartshorne Mall. “Terrifier map” is a common player description, but using the official name helps distinguish the map from general settings advice and makes clear which location is being discussed.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe distinction between a test build and the live game matters. A note about Hartshorne Mall in a PTB establishes that the map appeared in that test context; it does not establish how a later live version performs, nor does it identify a best graphics preset. Map-specific FPS claims require measurements from a specified build and hardware, and no such controlled Hartshorne Mall comparison is established here.
Which settings should I compare first?
Start with the graphics settings you already use, then compare FSR or XeSS if either option is available on your system. They are documented upscaling choices to evaluate, not proven Hartshorne Mall fixes, and there is no supported basis for ranking one above the other on this map.

FSR and XeSS
Upscaling is a performance-versus-image-quality trade-off: a setting that makes motion feel smoother may also make details look softer. Compare the result on your own hardware, checking both consistency of motion and whether objects and scene details remain easy to distinguish. Availability can vary; do not assume both options appear on every build or configuration.
Brightness and visibility
Brightness is a readability choice, not an established FPS optimization. Adjusting it may make the scene easier for you to interpret, but it should not be treated as a way to increase frame rate or eliminate stutter.

How can I compare settings without confusing the results?
Use a repeatable, like-for-like comparison rather than changing several options at once. The steps below are practical editorial guidance, not an official benchmark procedure.
- Record your baseline. Note the graphics settings currently in use and whether the problem is persistently low frame rate, intermittent hitching, or both.
- Keep the comparison as similar as possible. When practical, compare sessions on Hartshorne Mall under similar conditions. A different build or substantially different session makes it harder to tell whether a setting caused the change.
- Change one graphics option at a time. Compare your existing setup with one available upscaling choice, then with the other if it is offered. Avoid changing several options together, since that obscures which change affected the result.
- Judge motion and clarity together. Note whether movement seems more consistent, but also check whether the image becomes too soft for you to read the scene comfortably.
- Keep the setting that works on your hardware. If neither option offers a useful balance, return to the baseline rather than assuming an upscaler must help.
Is low FPS the same problem as stutter?
No. Low FPS describes a generally low rate of rendered frames; stutter is an intermittent hitch or unevenness. An upscaler’s documented performance-and-quality trade-off does not show that it will fix every cause of a hitch, so note which symptom you are trying to improve and assess it separately from image clarity.

Do not interpret a smoother-looking comparison as proof of a particular FPS gain. There is no established, hardware-specified Hartshorne Mall FPS figure or percentage improvement to quote, and no evidence-based winning preset for the map.
What can a display refresh rate tell me?
A display’s refresh rate and the game’s rendered frame rate are different things. A 120 Hz gaming monitor can display up to 120 refreshes per second, but that does not mean the game is rendering 120 frames per second; the PC must be able to supply the frames. A higher refresh rate does not by itself fix stutter or low FPS.

What should I conclude from a PTB performance note?
Treat it as information about the test build it describes, not as a performance result for the current live build. Without a specified build, hardware, and controlled comparison, a PTB observation cannot establish which settings deliver the highest FPS on Hartshorne Mall.

Can I use a Hartshorne Mall settings recommendation from an older patch?
Use it as a starting point, not a guarantee. A recommendation tied to a test build or older version does not establish performance in a later live build.

Why is XeSS missing from my graphics options?
XeSS is documented as an option where offered, not as a setting available on every setup. If it is absent, compare the options that your current build and hardware actually provide rather than assuming a hidden map-specific toggle exists.
Should I lower every graphics setting to get smoother play?
The available evidence does not establish that an all-low preset is best for Hartshorne Mall. A one-change-at-a-time comparison is more informative because it shows whether an individual setting improves your result without unnecessarily reducing clarity.
