For a new computer, 256 GB of SSD storage is a basic-use starting point; 512 GB gives more room for locally stored photos, videos, games, and projects. Neither is a universal minimum: the right size depends on what you keep on the computer at the same time, how quickly that collection grows, and whether files need to be available offline. If you keep a large game library or substantial media projects locally, consider 1 TB or more. Choose capacity for the computer’s built-in working storage separately from capacity for an external archive or backup.
What does “hard drive storage” mean when you’re choosing a computer?
In a computer listing, storage usually means the capacity of the internal drive that holds the operating system, applications, and files. Although people often call any computer storage a “hard drive,” the built-in drive in a new computer is commonly an SSD. An external drive is a separate device: it can hold files or backups, but it does not increase the capacity of the computer’s internal drive while disconnected.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Capacity is only one part of the decision. Think about whether the drive will be your main working storage, an archive for material you rarely open, or a separate destination for backup copies. Those jobs can have different needs: a primary drive benefits from fast access, while an archive or backup drive needs enough capacity for the files it is meant to retain. Check a computer’s ports and upgrade options before counting on adding another drive later.
For a primary drive, an SSD is generally the more suitable choice. Microsoft describes SSDs as faster than HDDs, while an HDD can still serve as external storage for files that do not need to be accessed as quickly. The distinction matters most when comparing a computer’s main drive with a storage device intended for archiving or backup—not when deciding how much data you own. Microsoft’s overview of SSDs, HDDs, and storage types explains the difference.

How much internal storage do I need for everyday use?
Start with how much you plan to keep locally, not with a universal “minimum.” Microsoft’s January 2026 buying guidance describes 256 GB as solid for basic needs and 512 GB or more as suitable for photos, videos, games, and creative projects. These are buying ranges, not a requirement that every user needs the larger tier. Microsoft’s new-PC guide provides the baseline.
| How you use the computer | Starting point | What could shift the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Browsing, email, documents, and streaming | 256 GB SSD | Frequent downloads, locally synced folders, and files kept for offline access take up space beyond the operating system and applications. |
| Mixed use, including local photos or occasional games | 512 GB SSD | Choose more if the photos, videos, or games you want installed together add up to a substantial collection. |
| A large personal library kept on the computer | About 512 GB to 1 TB or more | Cloud-heavy use may reduce the amount kept locally; a larger offline collection points the other way. |
| Several games installed at once | Calculate from the games you want installed; about 1 TB is a practical starting estimate | Microsoft’s published gaming range is 512 GB to 2 TB-plus, depending on games and other files. The 1 TB estimate is a planning midpoint, not a Microsoft minimum. |
| Substantial photo or video projects | Size from source files and planned projects | Consider separate fast media storage as well as the internal drive used for the application and its cache. |
A smaller drive can be workable if much of your collection is online and you are comfortable managing which files are stored locally. A larger drive is more forgiving if you want a broad library available without moving files, uninstalling games, or relying on an internet connection. Think in terms of what you need to access at the same time, rather than the total amount of data you have ever created.

How should I calculate the capacity I’ll use?
Add three things: the space used now, the additional files and applications you expect to keep together, and an allowance you choose for future growth, updates, and working files. Then round up to a sold capacity. This is a planning method, not a formula with an official percentage of free space: the allowance depends on how quickly your files accumulate and how much housekeeping you are willing to do.
- Find current usage. On Windows, open File Explorer > This PC and check the used and available space on the internal drive. This gives you a starting snapshot rather than a forecast.
- Identify what you will add. Count the games, downloads, media, and projects you expect to keep locally at the same time. For games, use the actual installations you want—not a guess based on the number of games you own.
- Allow for change. Add room for future additions, updates, and project working files. Choose an allowance that fits your own habits; there is no fixed percentage in the cited Windows guidance.
- Round up and check the actual model. Compare the estimate with the computer’s offered drive sizes and available upgrade options. If your estimate is already at or above a listed capacity, the next size up gives more breathing room.
- Revisit what occupies space. Windows Storage and Cleanup recommendations can help identify large or unused files. Microsoft also documents moving infrequently used files to an external device when local space is tight. Microsoft’s storage overview covers external-storage options.
For example, someone with 300 GB of current files who expects to add 150 GB and chooses a 100 GB growth allowance gets an estimate of 550 GB. That does not mean a particular computer will use exactly that amount or that 512 GB is categorically inadequate; it means a 512 GB option would be tight against this person’s own estimate, so comparing a 1 TB configuration is sensible.
Low free space can make routine management harder, including installing updates. If the calculation is close, do not treat the drive’s full advertised capacity as space you can commit in advance: the operating system, applications, and temporary working data also need room. Microsoft’s Windows storage guidance covers both cleanup and external-storage choices.

How much space do games, photos, and video need?
Games: count the installed library
Gaming capacity depends on which games you want installed at the same time and what else lives on the computer. Microsoft’s gaming guidance gives a broad range of 512 GB to 2 TB-plus for a gaming PC holding games alongside other files. That range is a guide, not a promise that a particular game library fits a particular tier. Make a list of the installations you want to keep together and add their actual storage requirements to your other local files.
A computer that is used for gaming but has only one or two games installed may need less space than one holding a larger rotating library. Conversely, buying a drive based on the size of today’s game list can leave little room for later additions. The useful question is not simply “How many games do I own?” but “How many do I want installed and ready to play without moving or reinstalling them?”
Photos: distinguish the application from the library
An application’s installation requirement does not tell you how much space your photo collection needs. Adobe lists 8 GB of available disk space for Lightroom Classic installation, with additional installation space required; that figure is for installing the application, not for storing a photo library. Estimate the library from the files you already have and the new shoots you intend to keep.
If photos are stored online or on another device rather than fully on the computer, local needs can be lower, but confirm that the files you expect to edit or view offline are actually stored locally. A cloud-synced folder can have a different local footprint from a folder containing full downloaded copies.
Video: source material can outweigh the software
Video workflows can grow quickly because working footage, project files, exports, and application cache can all occupy space. Seagate says an illustrative 30-minute 4K shoot can produce over 150 GB of raw footage and gives 4–8 TB as a planning range for 4K video projects. Those are Seagate’s November 2025 examples, not a universal file-size rule: resolution alone does not determine a video’s size, and format and workflow matter. Seagate’s video-editing storage guide describes its examples.

Adobe’s Premiere guidance separates the job of the fast internal SSD used for the application and cache from the additional high-speed storage used for media. For a substantial project, budget for the active source files and working materials rather than treating the editor’s installation size as a proxy for the whole job. A dedicated media drive can make sense when the footage library outgrows the internal drive, but it remains separate from the computer’s built-in capacity.
Does cloud storage replace local storage?
Cloud services can reduce how much of a collection is downloaded to the computer, but they do not make local capacity irrelevant. Microsoft’s OneDrive Files On-Demand can leave placeholders instead of full downloaded files, which can save local space. Files you need without a network connection must be available locally, so consider offline access when estimating how much internal storage to buy.
Also distinguish synchronization from backup. A cloud-sync folder is useful for keeping files accessible across devices, but it is not a reason to delete the only copy of important material without checking that a separate, usable copy exists. Backblaze explicitly says its Computer Backup service is not extra storage into which a user can upload files and then delete them locally. The practical lesson is to understand what a service retains and how access works before using it as an archive.
How much backup storage should I buy?
Plan backup capacity separately from the computer’s internal drive. A 2 TB external backup disk does not give a laptop with a 1 TB internal drive 3 TB of built-in working space; it is a second destination for copies. Nor is an external archive automatically a backup if it holds the only copy of a file.

Bombich Software, which makes backup software, likewise recommends a device with twice the capacity of the source device or devices to allow for growth and backup history. That is another provider’s recommendation, not a guarantee that the same ratio suits every collection. The right amount depends on what you back up, how long you retain history, and whether the device also holds unrelated files.
- Working storage: the internal drive holding the operating system, applications, and files you use directly.
- Archive storage: a place for material you want to retain but do not need on the computer all the time.
- Backup storage: a separate copy intended to help recover data if the working copy is lost or damaged.
Keep those roles clear when choosing capacity. If you put archived files on an external drive and erase the originals, that external drive is their only copy—not a backup. For important files, plan for an additional copy rather than treating one external device as protection against every loss scenario.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does a 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?
Manufacturers and operating systems can express capacity using different units. A nominal 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes; when that byte count is expressed in binary units, it is approximately 931 GiB, before formatting and other uses. That difference in unit conventions explains why a displayed figure can look smaller without the bytes having disappeared.
There is a second reason the space available for your files is lower than the advertised capacity: the operating system, installed applications, formatting, and other data use some of the drive. So compare like with like and look at the drive’s reported free space after setup rather than assuming every advertised byte is available for personal files.

- Total cost: compare the actual configurations available to you; no price comparison is established here, and capacity should not be chosen from a guessed price premium.
If you mainly browse, write, and stream, 256 GB may suit a modest local collection. For a mixed-use computer, 512 GB is the more flexible starting point. If your calculation already approaches that capacity—or you keep a growing game, photo, or video library locally—consider a 1 TB or larger internal drive, then size any archive and backup storage for their separate jobs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is storage the same thing as RAM?
No. Storage retains the operating system, applications, and files when the computer is off; RAM is temporary working memory used while programs run. Choosing a larger SSD does not add RAM, and choosing more RAM does not create more room for files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan an external drive stay plugged in all the time?
It can be connected when its role and the computer’s setup call for it, but an external drive remains a separate device and may be disconnected or unavailable. Keep essential working files on storage you can reliably access, and do not assume an external archive is a second copy if it contains the only original.
Should I choose a larger drive if I cannot upgrade later?
If a computer has no suitable upgrade path, the internal capacity you choose is harder to change later, so compare it against expected growth as well as current usage. Verify upgradeability for the exact computer model before relying on a later SSD addition; configurations and interfaces can differ.
