If Halo 5: Guardians is stuck searching, first check whether Xbox Network is available. If other games work and you’re on Xbox Series X|S, fully quit Halo 5, relaunch it, start and quit a solo custom game, then try matchmaking again—the game’s Quick Resume session is a common culprit. If multiplayer fails across games, check your Xbox NAT and router instead. - Highlight the Halo 5 tile and press the controller’s menu button.
- Choose Quit. Do not reopen the game from Quick Resume.
- Launch Halo 5 from scratch and wait for it to load.
- Start any custom game by yourself.
- Quit that custom game, then search matchmaking. If the first search fails, try a second search before changing router settings.
Players often call this “burning” a custom game. Treat it as a workaround for a stale session, not evidence that Halo 5’s servers have shut down. Reports in April and June 2025 still recommended it, including for some players whose first matchmaking search failed.
You can also try disabling Quick Resume for Halo 5. Highlight the game tile, press the menu button, and go to Manage game and add-ons > Quick Resume settings > Disable Quick Resume. This is an Xbox platform setting; it is not a Halo 5 patch or a guarantee that the issue can never recur.

Read the exact message before troubleshooting: it can identify a playlist, fireteam, ban, or update problem rather than a general connection failure. Xbox Support’s Halo 5 page documents these messages:
- “Unable to Match. There may not be enough players to support a game in this playlist. Please try a different playlist.” Try another playlist before rebuilding your network. Community reports from June 2025 describe Ranked Slayer as the most consistently populated choice; Warzone, Quickplay, and Fiesta were reported to fill during US evening hours. These are player observations, not an official population count or guarantee.
- “Attention. Could not find a server that was suitable for all members of your fireteam.” Split the fireteam and search solo, or have the group try again with everyone in the same region. If solo matchmaking works, the issue may be the party composition or server suitability rather than your console’s internet connection.
- “Attention. At least one player in your fireteam is banned from playing Halo 5: Guardians.” Remove the banned player from the fireteam. Repeated network tests will not resolve a ban message.
- “Attention. Your fireteam is too large for the selected activity. Manage your fireteam in the Roster and try again.” Open the Roster, reduce the group to a size the selected activity allows, and search again.
- “We’ve encountered a problem and couldn’t join you to the game. Please try again.” Try again; if the error persists, fully quit and relaunch Halo 5, then use the custom-game workaround on Series X|S.
- “An update is available for Halo 5: Guardians. Please restart the game to install this update.” Restart the game so it can install the update, then try again.
For persistent fireteam errors, also make sure the game has not been left suspended in Quick Resume. A 2015 343 community-forum discussion connected a similar server-suitability message with lagging out; the wording does not, by itself, prove that all Halo services are unavailable.
Which Halo 5 playlists are still active?
Community reports are the available guide, not official live player counts. In June 2025, players described Ranked Slayer as the playlist most likely to find a match at different times of day, and suggested Warzone, Quickplay, or Fiesta during US evenings.

An August 2024 community comment also listed Super Fiesta, Slayer, Heroic Firefight, Mythic Firefight, Quick Play, Big Team Super Fiesta, and 2v2 as options, with the writer describing Fiesta as especially popular. How do I fix Strict NAT, Double NAT, or UPnP errors?

- Restart the console and network equipment. Restart the Xbox and router; if you have a separate modem or gateway, power-cycle it too. A brief unplug-and-reconnect may be enough; some troubleshooting guides recommend waiting several minutes before reconnecting equipment.
- Enable UPnP on one router. In the router’s settings, enable Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), save, and restart the router and Xbox. Run Test NAT type again. Router menus vary by model. If UPnP remains unsuccessful, router firmware updates may help; one documented sequence is to turn UPnP off and save, restart the equipment, turn UPnP back on, enable Zero Config if the router offers it, then restart and retest.
- Remove Double NAT. If an ISP gateway feeds a second router, set the gateway to bridge/modem mode or the second router to access-point mode so only one device routes. You can temporarily plug the Xbox into the gateway to see whether the result changes. If Double NAT remains when only the ISP gateway is routing, ask the provider about its network setup.
- Reserve the Xbox’s local IP address. In your router’s DHCP settings, create a reservation for the Xbox so it keeps the same local IPv4 address. Use the router’s reservation feature rather than guessing an address.
- Only if UPnP still fails, forward the core Xbox ports to that reserved address. The repeated core set in the cited Xbox NAT guides is UDP 88, UDP 500, UDP 3074, TCP 3074, UDP 3544, and UDP 4500. Save the mappings and retest. Some secondary guides also list TCP/UDP 53 and TCP 80, but start with the core set and do not treat extra ports as universally required.
Do not run UPnP and manual forwarding for the same Xbox at the same time. If you have multiple Xbox consoles, they cannot all use the same external UDP 3074 mapping simultaneously; use Xbox’s alternate port selection and distinct router mappings where needed. A DMZ exposes more than targeted forwarding and is not a routine fix; do not disable the router firewall as a shortcut.

What if port forwarding does not fix NAT?
Port forwarding cannot create an inbound public address if your provider uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT). Check the router’s WAN IPv4 address: if it falls in 100.64.0.0–100.127.255.255, or is a private address such as 10.x, 172.16–31.x, or 192.168.x that differs from the public IPv4 address, ask your ISP whether it can provide a public IPv4 address.
A VPN with port forwarding is sometimes described as a workaround when the router or ISP cannot be changed, but it is not a Halo 5-specific repair and should not be your first step. First establish whether the problem is a stale game session, a service outage, or a local Double NAT issue.
If the console reports NAT Type: Unavailable, Can’t get a Teredo IP address, or party-chat error 0x89231906, address the reported multiplayer/NAT condition before trying a long list of game-specific fixes. Router settings may include an option called Allow Teredo tunneling or Allow IPv6 tunneling; if present, consult the router’s instructions and retest multiplayer after changing it. Don’t assume that a Teredo setting is needed when the console’s tests are clean and only Halo 5 is affected.
Should I switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet?
A wired connection is a useful diagnostic for wireless drops, but it does not change your NAT type. Connect an Ethernet cable—such as a Cat 6 cable—from the Xbox network port to a LAN port on the router, then run Test network connection and repeat the multiplayer and NAT tests.
If the wired connection works while Wi-Fi does not, troubleshoot the wireless path: move the console closer to the router, reduce interference, and check router settings such as wireless security, MAC filtering, channel selection, or channel width. Try a known-working cable and another router LAN port if Ethernet also fails. A steadier connection can improve reliability, but it will not solve CGNAT, Double NAT, or a Halo 5 Quick Resume session problem by itself.

How do I fix “unable to connect to the Halo 5 Guardians lobby service”?
First check service status and the Xbox multiplayer test; then refresh the console’s network state. If Xbox Network is up and the error persists, clear the Alternate MAC Address and power-cycle the console before considering a reset.
- Go to Settings > Network settings > Advanced settings > Alternate MAC address, choose Clear, and allow the console to restart.
- If the lobby error remains, fully power off the Xbox, disconnect its cables, wait two to three minutes, reconnect, and start it again. A hard restart can clear a stuck network session.
- Retest multiplayer and NAT, then launch Halo 5 cold. On Series X|S, do the custom-game workaround before searching.

Can I play Halo 5 multiplayer offline or over LAN?

Check Xbox Network and Halo service status for the current situation. If services are up, a failed search—particularly on Series X|S—does not by itself mean the game has been shut down. Try the Quick Resume workaround and a more active playlist before concluding that no one is playing.
