Yes, you need a VR headset to play the official PC version of Half-Life: Alyx. Valve and Steam list it as “VR Only” and state that the game requires a VR headset. You do not need Valve’s Index headset specifically: any compatible SteamVR or PC-VR setup can work, including a Meta Quest 3 connected to a gaming PC with Steam Link or a wired Meta Link connection.
The headset is only part of the requirement. You also need Steam, SteamVR, a 64-bit computer and operating system, and hardware that meets the game’s listed minimum of 12 GB RAM plus a GTX 1060 or RX 580 graphics card with 6 GB of VRAM. Quest 3 does not run the game natively; the game is rendered by the PC and streamed to the headset.

Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR-focused return to the Half-Life series. It is a first-person game built around looking, moving, aiming and manipulating objects in three-dimensional space rather than around a conventional monitor, mouse and keyboard.
The official Steam release supports SteamVR and includes Source 2 tools for community-created levels. Valve’s own Alyx page presents the game as software for SteamVR systems, so the supported experience is a PC-based virtual-reality game rather than a standard flat-screen release.

That distinction matters when you are deciding what to buy. A headset alone is not a console that runs Alyx: your computer supplies the game, graphics processing and SteamVR runtime, while the headset displays the scene and provides tracked input.
Do you need a VR headset to play Half-Life: Alyx?
Yes. Steam’s official listing says, “This game requires a VR headset in order to play,” and labels the title “VR Only.” The released version is therefore not supported as a normal monitor game with a mouse and keyboard.
Valve does not advertise an official flat-screen mode. Community projects may attempt to provide non-VR play, but they are separate from Valve’s supported release; their current completeness, compatibility and support are not established here. If you want the version Valve supports, plan on using a functioning PC-VR or SteamVR headset with tracked controllers.
Do you need a Valve Index?
No. Valve says Alyx can be played on any SteamVR system. The Index is one compatible headset, not a mandatory key for the game.
Steam is designed to be hardware agnostic. In practical terms, the deciding question is whether your headset has a documented SteamVR or PC-VR route and whether its tracking and controllers are recognized by that software. A headset from another manufacturer can be suitable if it meets those conditions.
Do not confuse “not required” with “irrelevant.” Alyx depends on tracked head and hand input, so a device that merely displays a stereoscopic image without usable motion controllers is not an equivalent setup.

Yes, through a gaming PC. Meta’s official Steam Link listing supports Meta Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro for streaming games from a computer’s Steam library. Meta’s Link documentation also identifies Quest 3 as compatible with a wired PC-VR connection.

This is PC VR, not a native Quest installation. Alyx remains installed and running on the computer; SteamVR handles the PC-VR session, and the Quest receives the rendered view and sends headset and controller input back to the computer.

The Quest 3 is consequently a practical route for Alyx when you already have, or plan to build, a capable gaming PC. Meta’s documentation establishes the PC connection; Valve’s Steam listing establishes the game’s VR and SteamVR requirements.
What PC specifications does Half-Life: Alyx require?
Steam’s current listing gives the following minimum figures, verified for the 2026 listing. These are baseline requirements, not a guarantee that every complex scene will run at a preferred frame rate or visual setting.

Steam Support separately warns that Alyx can keep a powerful CPU and GPU busy during complex VR gameplay. If performance is uneven, review the game’s advanced performance options rather than assuming that a headset upgrade will solve a computer-side bottleneck. The headset does not reduce the RAM, graphics or operating-system requirements.
How should you interpret the minimum GPU?
“GTX 1060 or RX 580 with 6 GB VRAM” describes a class of hardware, not a promise that every card with a similar name behaves identically. Laptop and desktop versions can differ, and other components, drivers and headset settings affect the result. Use the published minimum as a qualification check; do not treat it as a recommended specification for maximum image quality.
What do you need before installing the game?
Have these items ready before troubleshooting the headset:
- A 64-bit PC and operating system that meet at least Steam’s listed RAM and GPU minimums.
- A Steam account, Steam installed on the computer and Alyx purchased and installed in that library.
- SteamVR installed through Steam and able to detect the headset.
- A compatible VR headset with tracked controllers.
- Either a supported wireless PC-VR path such as Steam Link or the appropriate wired connection, such as Meta Link for a Quest headset.
For a Quest 3, decide on wireless Steam Link or wired Meta Link before you begin. A USB-C Link cable is an accessory for the wired method, not a universal requirement for every Quest owner.

How do you set up Half-Life: Alyx with a Quest headset?
Start with the PC requirements and the connection method. The following sequence keeps the game, SteamVR and headset pairing in the order they are needed.
Wireless Steam Link setup
- Install Steam on the gaming PC, sign in and install Half-Life: Alyx.
- Install SteamVR from Steam and launch it once so the PC has the VR runtime available.
- On the Quest headset, install and open the official Steam Link app.
- Use Steam Link’s pairing flow to select the computer running Steam and complete the on-screen pairing code.
- Start the SteamVR session from Steam Link, confirm that the headset and controllers are visible, then launch Alyx from the Steam library.
This route avoids a headset cable, but it does not avoid the computer requirement: Steam Link is streaming the PC’s game to the Quest.

A cable can be useful when you prefer a direct wired connection, but Meta documents wireless Steam Link as an alternative. Choosing wired or wireless changes how the headset connects; it does not change the game’s PC hardware requirements.
How should you compare headsets for Alyx?
Compare the PC-VR path first, then the interaction hardware. Comfort and display preferences are legitimate personal considerations, but there is no source-backed comfort or image-quality ranking to apply here.

What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?
The game says no headset is detected
Confirm that SteamVR is installed and running, then check whether SteamVR identifies the headset and controllers before launching Alyx. With Quest hardware, reconnect the Steam Link or Meta Link session and repeat pairing if the PC is not shown.
The computer meets the minimum but performance is poor
Meeting the minimum does not make every visual setting optimal. Steam Support recommends reviewing Alyx’s advanced performance options; lower-demand settings can reduce the load on a busy CPU or GPU. Also close unnecessary applications and verify that the computer is using the intended graphics processor, especially on a laptop.
The Quest works in standalone mode but not with Alyx
Standalone Quest operation is not the same as PC VR. Open the PC connection through Steam Link or Meta Link, make sure SteamVR is active on the computer, and launch the PC copy of Alyx from Steam.

The wireless route is unstable
Wireless Steam Link depends on the connection between the headset and the computer. If that route is unreliable, use the documented wired Meta Link method with a suitable USB-C data cable; switching connection method does not remove the need for SteamVR or capable PC hardware.

No. The complete setup can include the headset, tracked controllers, a capable gaming PC, Steam, SteamVR and, for a wired Quest connection, a USB-C data cable. A headset purchase that leaves the computer below the listed 12 GB RAM or 6 GB VRAM minimum will not satisfy the official requirements.
Conversely, if your computer already meets the requirements, you do not have to buy Valve’s Index. Select a headset with a documented SteamVR or PC-VR path and controllers that support the game’s tracked interaction model.
