For higher and steadier Half-Life: Alyx VR frame rates, update the game, enable Foveated Rendering when the toggle is available, and tune performance in a real gameplay scene. Check SteamVR’s render resolution first, then Alyx’s overall Fidelity and separate Texture Quality; if the GPU is still the limit, test a lower headset refresh rate. Valve has not published a universal FPS gain, and Alyx’s dynamic resolution can spend newly available headroom on a sharper image instead of a higher counter reading.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Foveated Rendering | Compatible GPUs needing more rendering headroom | Advanced Performance toggle; fixed foveation works without eye tracking | Windows Direct3D 11 for listed NVIDIA cards; Vulkan for AMD and Intel; Linux Vulkan | Oct 2026 |
| SteamVR Auto Render Resolution | A safe first resolution setting | SteamVR Settings > Video > Render Resolution > Auto | PCVR through SteamVR | Oct 2026 |
| Low Fidelity | Diagnosing a GPU-limited setup | Alyx Performance menu; move upward gradually after testing | PCVR | Oct 2026 |
| Independent Texture Quality | Reducing GPU or memory pressure without changing every quality setting | Adjust separately from overall Fidelity | PCVR | Oct 2026 |
| 90 Hz Index test | Valve Index systems missing a higher refresh target | Valve’s suggested lower-refresh diagnostic when the GPU is overtaxed | Valve Index on SteamVR | Oct 2026 |
What changed in the October 2026 Alyx patches?
Two releases matter, and they should not be conflated. Valve’s September 14, 2026 update added native Steam Frame support, including standalone foveated rendering and headset-specific work. The October 26 update added the supported desktop-PC Advanced Performance > Foveated Rendering toggle. Valve’s release notes describe the feature cautiously: it “Can increase rendering performance.” That wording is a conditional capability, not a promised percentage increase. Read the release history at Valve’s Half-Life: Alyx news page.

Valve recorded fixes on October 28 for an AMD regression and visual glitches involving decals and splatters. Update before judging the feature, rather than treating the original October 26 build as the final state. Steam Frame’s native depth-reprojection work also does not automatically apply to every desktop PCVR configuration.
How do I enable Foveated Rendering in Half-Life: Alyx?
On a supported PC, the switch is in Alyx’s own performance settings and starts disabled.

The patch-linked PC guide documents the menu location and compatibility details at mbucchia’s Half-Life: Alyx foveated-rendering guide. If the toggle is absent, do not assume a separate download is required: first check your GPU family and rendering backend.
Which GPUs and rendering backends support the toggle?
The guide’s listed threshold is newer than Alyx’s minimum game requirement. It names NVIDIA GTX 16-series and RTX 20-series or newer, AMD RX 6000-series or newer, and Intel Arc A-series or newer. Backend selection matters on Windows.
| GPU family | Windows backend listed by the guide | What to do | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA GTX 16-series and RTX 20-series or newer | Direct3D 11 normally used by Windows | Check for the toggle on the default path | The release announcement names NVIDIA; the linked guide supplies the detailed series list |
| AMD RX 6000-series or newer | Vulkan | Add -vulkan in Steam Library > Half-Life: Alyx > Properties > General > Launch Options, then restart |
Feature availability is documented; this does not establish that Vulkan is always faster |
| Intel Arc A-series or newer | Vulkan | Add -vulkan in the same Launch Options field, then restart |
Intel detail comes from the linked guide rather than the shorter announcement |
| Linux systems | Vulkan by default | Check the GPU against the listed families and reopen Alyx | The guide describes Vulkan as Linux’s default backend |
After adding -vulkan, fully restart the game so the backend change is applied. Compare the resulting Vulkan setup with your previous configuration; the available evidence establishes support for the feature, not a universal Direct3D-versus-Vulkan performance ranking.
Do I need eye tracking for Alyx foveated rendering?
No. A compatible GPU can use fixed foveated rendering with any VR headset. The guide states that “Foveated Rendering can be enabled with any Virtual Reality (VR) headset,” subject to its GPU and backend rules.
Gaze-following foveation is different. It requires a supported headset and a SteamVR driver that actually supplies eye-tracking data to the game. Owning a headset with eye sensors does not prove that Alyx receives that data, and the guide warns that OpenVR compatibility layers can block eye-tracking integration. If eye data is unavailable, use the fixed behavior and evaluate its image-quality trade-off rather than troubleshooting headset ownership alone.

Should SteamVR render resolution be Auto?
Auto is the sensible first setting because it lets SteamVR choose a render resolution for the current setup. Open SteamVR > Settings > Video > Render Resolution, select Auto, and return to a demanding gameplay scene.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf Auto still misses your refresh target, reduce the render resolution one step and reassess. Lowering it improves GPU headroom at the cost of image sharpness; there is no single percentage or numeric value that is correct for every headset, connection method, or GPU. Alyx also adjusts effective resolution dynamically, so a lower SteamVR ceiling and the game’s own scaling can interact.
How should I set Fidelity and Texture Quality?
Use Alyx’s overall Fidelity as a diagnostic lever, then tune Texture Quality independently. They are not one combined preset.
Start with Low Fidelity to identify the bottleneck
In Alyx’s Performance menu, try Low Fidelity when the setup is slow. If the scene becomes smooth, move upward gradually until you find an acceptable balance between clarity and frame-time headroom. This is a troubleshooting baseline, not a recommendation that every player should remain on Low.
Adjust Texture Quality separately
Texture Quality has its own control. Lower it when the GPU or available graphics memory remains under pressure after checking resolution and overall Fidelity. Because it is independent, you can preserve more of the scene-quality settings while making a targeted compromise. Raise it again only after the demanding gameplay scene remains stable.

Should I lower my headset refresh rate?
If the GPU is overtaxed, Valve specifically suggests that Valve Index owners test 90 Hz instead of a higher refresh rate. A lower target gives each frame more time, but it changes motion cadence and is not a universal prescription for other headsets.
Make the refresh-rate change in SteamVR, then retest the same gameplay location. Keep the setting only if its motion consistency and visual trade-off suit you; do not infer that 90 Hz is the fastest setting for every PCVR system.
Why did FPS not increase after I enabled the patch?
Alyx dynamically raises or lowers its effective resolution as performance headroom changes. Foveation may create enough headroom for the game to render a clearer image at the same refresh target, leaving an FPS counter nearly unchanged. An unchanged number therefore does not, by itself, prove that the toggle failed.
Valve’s release notes and the linked guide provide no verified universal percentage uplift. Assess frame-time consistency, dropped frames, and clarity in a repeatable gameplay scene rather than promising a patch-wide FPS result. Menus are a poor comparison because they do not reproduce the workload of a busy scene.

For a temporary controlled comparison, the linked guide gives these Steam Launch Options:
+vr_fidelity_level_auto 0 +vr_fidelity_level 3
They disable Alyx’s dynamic-resolution adjustment for the comparison. Remove both options afterward; they are not presented as a permanent optimization. A fixed-resolution result can look worse or better than normal play simply because it prevents Alyx from adapting to changing headroom.
What does foveated rendering actually change?
The guide describes three rendering regions: an inner region at full resolution, a middle region with reduced shading, and an outer region rendered at lower resolution. Its documented quarter and sixteenth fractions describe the rendering resolution of those regions, not a claim of four-times or sixteen-times the frame rate.
With eye tracking, the high-detail area can follow the viewer’s gaze when the headset driver exposes that data. Without eye tracking, the effective high-detail area follows the fixed behavior supported by the implementation. In both cases, the visual result depends on headset optics, resolution, and your selected quality settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I change the advanced foveation variables?
Usually not at first. The guide says its defaults should work for most people and treats console variables as advanced tinkering. If you deliberately experiment, it documents fove_level values lo, med, hi (the default), and ultra.

The effective presets can change when eye tracking is unavailable. “Ultra” is therefore not a universal best choice: it may trade more performance headroom for image quality, and the result depends on your GPU, backend, headset and gaze-data path. Establish a stable baseline with the supported menu controls before touching console variables, and change only one value at a time.
What should I do if the toggle is missing or performance is still poor?
- Toggle missing: compare your card with the GTX 16/RTX 20-or-newer, RX 6000-or-newer, and Arc A-or-newer list. On Windows AMD or Intel, confirm
-vulkanis present and restart Alyx. - Visual problems after updating: install the current game update. Valve’s October 28 notes recorded fixes for an AMD regression and decal or splatter glitches that affected the initial October 26 state.
- Eye tracking unavailable: verify that the headset’s SteamVR driver supplies eye data and that no OpenVR compatibility layer is intercepting it; fixed foveation remains the fallback.
- GPU still saturated: use SteamVR Auto, then a lower render resolution, Low Fidelity, and lower independent Texture Quality in that order. Raise settings one at a time after stability returns.
- High-refresh Index stutter: test 90 Hz as Valve suggests for an overtaxed GPU, then compare motion consistency in the same scene.
- FPS counter unchanged: account for Alyx’s dynamic resolution. Check clarity and dropped-frame behavior instead of expecting a fixed percentage gain.
Do I need a new graphics card?
Not automatically. The Steam store lists a GTX 1060 or RX 580 with 6 GB of VRAM as the game’s minimum requirement, but that is not the foveated-rendering compatibility threshold. The newer feature list starts at GTX 16-series, RTX 20-series, RX 6000-series, or Arc A-series, depending on backend. Check your existing card and backend first rather than buying hardware solely because the toggle is absent.

How should I choose a final profile?
| Situation | First change | Next change | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compatible NVIDIA card on Windows | Enable Foveated Rendering on the Direct3D 11 path | SteamVR Auto, then lower resolution if needed | Peripheral detail and overall sharpness versus headroom |
| Compatible AMD or Intel card on Windows | Add -vulkan, restart, then enable the toggle |

| GPU-limited image-quality setup | Keep Foveated Rendering on and test Auto | Lower Fidelity or Texture Quality separately | Scene detail or texture detail versus smoother frame delivery |
| Valve Index missing a higher refresh target | Test 90 Hz | Revisit resolution and quality after the refresh change | Lower refresh target versus motion cadence |
| Setup with no eye-data path | Use fixed foveation | Leave advanced variables at defaults | Stable compatibility versus gaze-following detail placement |
How we picked these settings
The order follows Valve’s performance guidance and the patch guide’s compatibility rules: establish an in-game baseline, enable the supported feature, verify SteamVR render resolution, use Low Fidelity and independent Texture Quality as diagnostics, and test refresh rate only when the GPU remains the limit. The choices avoid unsupported FPS promises and keep dynamic resolution in the interpretation of every comparison.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Half-Life: Alyx’s foveated-rendering toggle work on Linux?
The linked guide says Linux uses Vulkan by default. The GPU still needs to be in its listed compatibility families, so a Linux installation does not bypass the hardware requirement.
Is Vulkan always faster than Direct3D 11 for Alyx?
No. Vulkan is the backend the guide requires for AMD and Intel feature support on Windows, but the available documentation does not establish a universal performance ranking between backends. Compare your own repeatable gameplay scene after restarting with the new launch option.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I leave the dynamic-resolution launch options enabled after comparing settings?
No. +vr_fidelity_level_auto 0 +vr_fidelity_level 3 is described as a temporary controlled-comparison override. Remove it for normal play so Alyx can adapt resolution to changing performance headroom.
Does a GTX 1060 meet the new foveated-rendering requirement?
The Steam listing’s GTX 1060 or RX 580 6 GB specification is the minimum game requirement, not the feature threshold. The patch guide lists GTX 16-series and RTX 20-series or newer for NVIDIA, so check the exact GPU and backend before assuming the toggle will appear.
