Red Dead Online is a frontier-life sandbox. The map encourages riding between towns and wilderness areas, setting up or returning to camp, hunting, gathering, tracking targets and building a posse. Its five named roles—Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector, Moonshiner and Naturalist—give progression a more deliberate rhythm. The game’s appeal comes from inhabiting that routine rather than constantly switching to a new vehicle or activity.

Should I play GTA Online or Red Dead Online with friends?
Pick GTA Online for organized cooperative heists, quick competitive modes and a group that enjoys cars, weapons and changing activities often. Pick Red Dead Online for posse rides, camp routines, role activities, hunting and cooperative frontier missions where the journey is part of the evening.
GTA’s heists provide an obvious shared objective: divide preparation tasks, coordinate the finale and repeat with a different crew or approach. Races and adversary modes are useful when friends have only a short window. Social venues offer a low-pressure place to gather before deciding what to do next.

There is no reliable sourced figure for how many hours either game takes to unlock a particular path, so avoid choosing on an assumed time-to-endgame. The meaningful choice is breadth versus identity: GTA gives you more kinds of businesses and activities, while Red Dead makes the chosen frontier role more central to the experience.
Is Red Dead Online still getting updates?
Yes, Red Dead Online remains active, but Rockstar no longer presents it as receiving the same type of major themed expansion pipeline as GTA Online. In a July 7, 2022 community update, Rockstar said development resources were being redirected toward the next Grand Theft Auto game. It explained that Red Dead Online would receive monthly events, existing modes, experience improvements and Telegram Missions instead of major themed content updates. Rockstar also thanked players, writing: “We would also like to thank the Red Dead Online community for their continued support and dedication.”

That statement should not be rewritten as “Red Dead Online shut down.” Rockstar’s Newswire index includes a Red Dead Online Halloween entry dated October 6, 2026, alongside GTA Online entries from October 2026. Those listings support the conclusion that events and service activity continue; they do not establish that both games receive equal-sized expansions or equally frequent feature releases.
GTA Online therefore has the clearer future-content advantage for players who prioritize large, themed gameplay additions. Red Dead Online remains a viable choice for its existing world, roles and recurring events, but buy it for the frontier experience available now rather than on an expectation of GTA-scale expansions.
Which game has more to do?
GTA Online has more activity variety in the conventional sense: businesses, heists, races, adversary modes, vehicles, properties and social venues. Its city lets you move quickly between unrelated pursuits, and the long update history adds more layers to that menu.
Red Dead Online has fewer broad categories but more ways to inhabit each one. Hunting can support Trader work, travel can become part of collecting, and a posse can combine roles during a single ride. Do not use publisher sales figures as a substitute for active-player comparisons. Take-Two reported nearly 230 million Grand Theft Auto V units sold-in and more than 85 million Red Dead Redemption 2 units sold-in in May 2026. Those are full-game sales figures, not current populations for either online mode, and no directly comparable active-player count is provided here.
How do the online editions and full games work?
Take-Two states that GTA Online comes with each Grand Theft Auto V copy and Red Dead Online comes with each Red Dead Redemption 2 copy. Standalone online releases also exist. On Rockstar’s displayed PC Red Dead storefront, the full-game editions and the online-only edition have different contents, so read the exact listing instead of assuming every “online” product includes the campaign.
Edition availability and price depend on platform and region. A console copy of Grand Theft Auto V or Red Dead Redemption 2 is the most direct physical route when you want the corresponding online mode included, but verify whether a listing is physical or digital, which console generation it targets, its region and what content the seller actually provides.
