For groups of NPCs, an assault rifle is the most useful provisional all-rounder in GTA 6, while an SMG suits mobile close-to-mid-range fights and a pump shotgun is better inside tight rooms. Handguns are the lower-profile choice, throwables can disrupt people or vehicles, and sniper rifles and melee weapons are specialists rather than universal answers. That is a role comparison, not a final damage ranking: Rockstar has not published authoritative GTA 6 damage, accuracy, rate-of-fire, enemy-health or time-to-kill tables. Grand Theft Auto VI is currently announced for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, so the arsenal and tuning can still change.

Which GTA 6 weapon type is best against multiple NPCs?
An assault rifle is the strongest provisional general-purpose answer because it combines reach, automatic fire and the ability to keep pressure on moving targets. It is not automatically the best choice in every encounter: an SMG is easier to handle while moving, a shotgun is more practical in a hallway, and a throwable may influence several enemies or a vehicle without requiring a prolonged exchange.
Assault rifles: the open-area all-rounder
The Duke 556-style rifle is shown during vehicle chases and firefights. The extended gameplay breakdown also shows a substantial reserve count, but that on-screen amount is footage from a pre-release build, not a confirmed ammunition capacity or balance value.

For a group, the category’s likely advantages are medium-to-long reach and sustained fire. Those traits help when NPCs are spread across a street, moving between cars or approaching from several angles. Automatic fire also gives the player more opportunity to correct aim between targets than a single-shot weapon.
The trade-offs are strategic rather than merely numerical. A long gun is conspicuous, its muzzle report can escalate an encounter, and holding it exposes the player before the first shot. Use cover and short bursts when the group has sightlines on you; staying exposed to maintain continuous fire is likely to create more incoming fire than it solves.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSMGs and machine guns: mobile close-to-mid-range pressure
SMGs are the provisional choice when the fight is moving and distances are short or medium. PC Gamer reports an MP5-inspired SMG during the bank-robbery footage and identifies MAC-10-, Uzi- and other SMG-like designs, but several exact names remain visual identifications or speculation.
A compact automatic weapon fits vehicle exits, alleys and encounters where you must move between cover quickly. It can keep pressure on a group without the handling burden implied by a full-length rifle. That makes it a useful bridge between a concealed handgun and an assault rifle.
Do not read the category as a confirmed rate-of-fire or damage advantage. Rockstar has not released final figures, and the visible weapons may change before launch. The practical question is whether mobility and quick target transitions matter more than rifle reach in the particular space.
Pump-action and double-barrel shotguns: room-clearing specialists
Shotguns are best in tight spaces where enemies must pass through a doorway, hallway or cramped interior. The Moreland 850 pump-action shotgun is shown in a close-quarters hallway fight; hunting imagery also shows a double-barrel shotgun.
The pump design emphasizes timing. The gameplay breakdown specifically frames the hallway sequence around reload decisions, so a missed shot or an empty chamber can create a dangerous pause while several NPCs remain active. A double-barrel has an even more obvious limited-shot trade-off, though no final capacity or damage table is confirmed.

Shotguns are therefore powerful by encounter geometry, not by a published one-shot claim. They are a poor universal answer in open ground, where targets can spread beyond the weapon’s effective range and the reload window becomes easier to punish.
Handguns and revolvers: discreet, flexible carry
Handguns suit players who need a weapon ready without immediately displaying a long gun. The reported named sidearms include the Klose K17, Girardi ES9, Morgan revolver, Mustang .357 and Nipper .38.
Their main advantage against a group is control of the encounter before it becomes a firefight. A concealed or less conspicuous sidearm can support low-profile movement, a quick response after a vehicle stop or a transition when a long gun would draw attention. Revolvers and pistols should not be described as faster crowd-clearers than automatic rifles; the available evidence does not establish that.

Against several alerted NPCs, a handgun generally gives up sustained pressure and reach. Its value is flexibility: keep moving, use cover, and avoid escalating a public scene until a larger weapon is actually necessary.
Sniper-style rifles: distance and preparation
Sniper-style rifles are appropriate for scouting and selecting isolated targets before a group closes in. The sources visually identify Remington 700-, M1A- and other hunting-rifle analogues, but none of those identifications supplies a verified final model name or handling statistic.
Long range gives the player time to observe patrols, vehicles and cover. Once several NPCs are inside close range, however, a slow, precision-oriented weapon becomes a liability: targets can flank, the player may need to relocate, and missed shots do not provide the same sustained pressure as an automatic weapon.
Heavy and projectile weapons: concentrated impact with consequences
Heavy weapons and projectiles are the most promising category for concentrated groups or vehicles, but they also carry the largest visibility, escalation, ammunition and collateral-cost risks. A grenade launcher appears in the named or reported arsenal, while gameplay footage shows a Molotov used against a getaway vehicle.

The evidence does not establish an explosive radius, damage value, guaranteed kill effect or universal NPC reaction. Treat these weapons as encounter-changing tools: they may break up a formation or disable a vehicle, but their use can also make the player the most obvious threat in the area.
Throwables: disruption and area denial
Throwables are useful when the goal is to force movement, deny a route or affect a vehicle rather than win a direct exchange with every NPC. The Molotov is shown in an explosives slot and used to set a getaway car on fire.
This makes throwables valuable before or alongside gunfire. A burning vehicle can alter an escape route, while a thrown incendiary can make a doorway or patch of cover unattractive. Final crowd damage, burn duration and consistency across throwable types have not been published, so the reliable comparison is functional rather than numerical.
Melee weapons: only when distance has already collapsed
A hammer and baseball bat are among the confirmed or reported melee examples. They make sense when the player is already within reach, wants to avoid gunfire or is dealing with one vulnerable target.

Can NPCs react to your weapon before you fire?
Reported Rockstar presentation comments indicate that weapon visibility can change NPC behavior. GamesRadar quotes Rockstar North joint boss and development lead Rob Nelson saying a drawn handgun may make people walk away cautiously, while a long gun held in hand can provoke a stronger reaction. Nelson explained the design goal this way: “We don’t feel that works any longer at this resolution with the behavioral sophistication we need from our population now.”
This matters because weapon choice can affect the encounter before combat starts. A handgun may let the player move through a crowd with less immediate alarm; displaying a rifle may cause dispersal, alerts or escalation. The report is about observed pre-release behavior, not a complete rulebook for every NPC type, mission or location.

Does GTA 6 let you carry multiple guns?
The same GamesRadar report says two concealed handguns can be carried, while two long guns are visible through a combination of back and off-hand carry. That suggests a more physical loadout system than an unlimited invisible inventory.
Recommended Free Tools
Carry decisions therefore involve exposure as well as firepower. Two long guns provide options for range and close quarters, but they also advertise that the player is armed. A handgun pair supports a lower-profile approach, while switching to a rifle or shotgun can itself become part of the escalation.
The redesigned weapon wheel shown in extended gameplay provides quick selection, but the footage does not establish every slot, capacity limit or final interface rule. Ground weapon pickups are also shown, giving players an emergency way to replace or supplement a weapon during a fight.
What combat systems matter most when several NPCs attack?
The pre-release footage supports comparing weapons by exposure, movement and recovery time rather than by invented damage numbers.
- Cover use: Blind-fire from behind cover is shown, so weapons that can maintain pressure without exposing the entire body have a tactical role.
- Mobility: Rifle fire appears during vehicle chases, and compact automatics are naturally suited to movement between cars and cover.
- Reload pressure: The pump shotgun sequence makes reload timing central in a narrow hallway; any extended fight can punish a poorly timed reload.
- Emergency scavenging: Ground pickups mean a player who runs low or loses a preferred weapon may still adapt instead of treating the initial loadout as permanent.
- Area influence: Throwables and projectile weapons can affect routes, vehicles or clusters without relying solely on direct hits.
- Visibility: NPC reactions may begin when a weapon is displayed, making a concealed handgun strategically different from a rifle even before firing.
How should you choose a weapon for a specific group encounter?
Match the weapon to the space, the distance and whether you need to remain inconspicuous.
- Open street or parking area: Start with an assault rifle if the group is spread out or moving between vehicles. Use cover and avoid treating the displayed reserve count as a guaranteed final capacity.
- Moving fight or vehicle chase: An SMG is the provisional fit when quick movement and close-to-mid-range pressure matter more than maximum reach.
- Hallway, stairwell or doorway: A pump shotgun can exploit short sightlines, but plan the reload window before committing to a second wave.
- Public space where alarm matters: Keep a handgun available when the goal is discreet movement. Drawing a long gun may change NPC behavior before the first shot.
- Vehicle escape or blocked route: Consider a throwable or projectile weapon to disrupt the vehicle or force movement, accepting the higher visibility and collateral risk.
- Rooftop or distant overlook: A sniper-style rifle can support observation and isolated targets, but switch plans before the group reaches close range.
- Single nearby target: Melee can avoid gunfire when there is no surrounding crowd; it is not a dependable substitute for a firearm once several NPCs are active.
Which GTA 6 weapon names are actually confirmed?
PC Gamer’s named list includes the Klose K17, Morgan revolver, Girardi ES9, Mustang .357, Nipper .38, Moreland 850, Duke 556 Assault Rifle, hammer, baseball bat, Molotov cocktail and grenade launcher. Those names are tied to official videos or Rockstar communication in that report.
A separate extended-gameplay breakdown identifies five weapons in use: a compact sidearm pistol, the Moreland 850 pump-action shotgun, a Duke 556-style assault rifle, a gold-plated AK-style rifle and Molotov cocktails. Only the Moreland 850 is presented there with a fully confirmed name; the other descriptions should not be upgraded into official model names without a Rockstar source.

GTABase’s broader categories—handguns, assault rifles, machine guns, shotguns, sniper rifles, heavy weapons, thrown weapons and melee weapons—are useful for discovering what appears in screenshots, trailers and leaked footage. They are not proof that every listed item or statistic will ship at launch.
What is still unknown before launch?
No authoritative final table has been published for weapon damage, accuracy, rate of fire, enemy health, ammunition capacity or time to kill. That prevents a defensible numerical tier list and means claims such as “one-shots,” exact crowd counts or guaranteed clearing speed would be speculation.
Rockstar’s current announcement places Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for November 19, 2026. Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 Trailer 2 release noted that its footage was captured on PlayStation 5 and described Vice City and the state of Leonida; that older release carried an earlier date, so the October 2026 Rockstar announcement is the current date authority. If the article is read after another announcement, verify the date and platforms again.
What is the practical verdict for group fights?
Choose an assault rifle as the provisional default for open areas and mixed distances. Choose an SMG when movement and close-to-mid-range pressure dominate, a pump shotgun for tight interiors, and throwables when disruption or a vehicle matters more than sustained direct fire. Keep handguns for concealment and lower-profile movement; reserve sniper rifles and melee weapons for the situations they are built for.
These recommendations describe encounter roles visible in pre-release material, not final launch balance. Weapon names, carry rules, NPC reactions and tuning can change before November 19, 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will GTA 6 have the same weapon roster at launch as the trailers show?
Not necessarily. The named and visual lists combine official videos, communications, screenshots and pre-release footage, and Rockstar has not published a final inventory. Treat models shown without an official name as provisional until launch documentation confirms them.

Can you pick up weapons from the ground in GTA 6?
Extended gameplay coverage shows ground weapon pickups during combat. The footage demonstrates the mechanic, but it does not define every pickup location, replacement rule or the full list of weapons that can be collected.
Will every NPC respond the same way when you show a gun?
No universal behavior rule has been published. Rob Nelson’s comments describe weapon visibility changing population behavior, but reactions can depend on NPC type, context and the final build.
