If a gunfight gives you a wanted level in Grand Theft Auto VI, stop firing, break the officers’ line of sight, read the red information icons under the stars, and change the clues they can use. Leave the identified vehicle, swap clothes out of view, split Jason and Lucia when the couple clue is active, and leave the hot district instead of circling back. Shooting usually escalates the response; escaping the first patrol is not the same as making the area forget you. Rockstar has shown these systems in previews, but the game is still unreleased as of 29 October 2026, so there is no confirmed countdown or guaranteed star-clearing trick.
What should you do the moment a gunfight makes you wanted?
The safest response is a controlled withdrawal rather than a longer firefight. Rob Nelson of Rockstar North described the intended rhythm as “hit-and-run”: commit the crime, move before dispatch develops a useful description, and avoid escalating when you still have a choice.

In an IGN demonstration on 27 August 2026, Jason aimed at aggressors without firing; they fled and the wanted state stayed low because it was not treated as a violent shooting.
- Break visual contact. Use a corner, wall, alley, fence, or crouch position. Solid white stars mean officers still have a direct line of sight; flashing white stars indicate that you have broken sight but the search is continuing.
- Read the red icons. They show what dispatch knows about your appearance, clothes, vehicle, camera exposure, weapon, or the fact that Jason and Lucia are together. Remove the clue that currently identifies you instead of simply driving faster.
- Leave the known car after sight is broken. A new vehicle removes one useful description, but changing cars does not by itself erase the wanted state. Do not make the swap in front of an officer.
- Change clothes out of view. A personal vehicle can carry spare outfits in its trunk. A hat or glasses can alter the face description, but a full outfit change is needed to remove the clothing clue.
- Split the pair when the couple icon is active. Send Jason and Lucia on different routes. Nelson said this lowers police perception of the pair; it is a clue-management option, not a guaranteed instant escape.
- Exit the hot area. The map can show a district where police remain interested. Returning too soon can restore pressure even after the immediate chase appears to have ended.
- Expect roadblocks, spike strips, and dogs on foot. Abandoning a car is no longer a reliable end to the pursuit. Use Focus Mode to check corners and avoid running blindly into a K9 unit.
These actions are conditional choices, not a documented “press this to clear stars” recipe. Rockstar has not published a seconds-to-clear timer, a fixed number of actions per star, or a universal escape route.
How does a gunfight become a wanted state in GTA 6?
Police do not automatically know every crime. Nelson told IGN that a witness must report the crime or an alarm must be triggered. Dispatch can then receive a highly specific description rather than a generic alert.

The report may include what you look like, your clothing, the vehicle you were driving, the weapon seen, CCTV footage, and whether Jason and Lucia are together. A person carrying a weapon is not automatically reported in every situation shown by previews; aiming it at people is what makes civilians react, flee, or call police. Firing at someone is the fastest way to turn a low-information report into a violent manhunt.
This distinction explains why the same encounter can produce very different heat. If no one sees the act and no alarm sounds, dispatch has no report to act on. If a witness sees an armed confrontation, police may arrive while still lacking a useful description. If you shoot and remain in the area, every additional witness, camera, or patrol observation can add information.
What do the six stars and red heat icons mean?
GTA VI restores a six-star HUD; GTA V used five. IGN’s 27 August 2026 coverage and Rockstar’s Extended Look show four visual star states, but Rockstar has not published a complete table for the fifth and sixth stars or confirmed military units.

A red-icon row beneath the stars is the more useful tactical display. IGN confirmed a person silhouette, clothes hanger, and camera; Nelson also pointed out vehicle and couple information. Secondary preview coverage widely reports a weapon icon as well.
- Person silhouette: police have a physical description.
- Clothes hanger: they know the outfit you are wearing.
- Camera: CCTV may have recorded you.
- Vehicle: dispatch knows the car or motorcycle connected to the report.
- Couple: police know Jason and Lucia are operating together.
- Weapon: a reported gun may remain part of the description; this icon is less tightly documented than the three IGN-confirmed icons.
More active icons mean an easier search. Prioritize the clue that is visible in your current situation: vehicle during a rolling chase, clothing and appearance after leaving the car, and the couple clue when both protagonists are together.

How do you clear the clues police know?
Change your appearance without confusing a partial disguise for a full reset
IGN showed Jason buying a baseball cap. The cap cleared the description icon but left the clothing icon. Nelson explained that glasses, a hat, or changed hair can alter how Jason looks, while police still know what he is wearing. Jason can also change facial hair. These are useful when you cannot reach a store, but they do not replace a complete outfit change.

Masks are expected to limit what witnesses can report, in a role similar to masks in Red Dead Redemption 2. The previews do not establish that putting on a mask after police already saw you erases clothing, vehicle, camera, weapon, or partner information.
Change clothes in a place police cannot watch
Nelson demonstrated two practical sources for a new outfit: a clothing store or a personal vehicle with outfit changes in the trunk. Change after breaking sight and move away from the swap location. If someone is watching the change, secondary coverage warns that it may not count as a clean change of identity.
Replace or abandon the identified vehicle
Jump out after the patrol loses sight, switch to another vehicle, and separate the new vehicle from the old one. In the Extended Look, Lucia took a used heist car somewhere quiet and burned it with a Molotov; when it was destroyed, the vehicle icon disappeared, according to grandtheft.gg’s preview account. Destruction is not required every time, and changing cars does not itself lower the wanted level.
Deal with the reported weapon
If the weapon icon appears, ditch, switch, or stash that gun in the trunk when you can do so safely. Do not stop in an exposed street merely to perform the swap; surviving the search comes before cleaning every clue.

Account for CCTV
GameSpot reported that a camera can preserve your identification. If footage is already recorded, you may need to find where the files are kept inside the location and destroy or wipe them. The previews do not provide a universal list of cameras or a guaranteed time at which footage expires.
Should Jason and Lucia stay together during a chase?
Staying together gives you coordinated fire and shared mobility, but it also leaves police with a distinctive two-person description. Nelson specifically said splitting Jason and Lucia can lower police perception of the pair.

Split only after you have escaped direct view. Separating in front of officers simply gives dispatch two visible targets instead of one.
What changes when you escape on foot?
On-foot movement can break patrol routes through alleys, fences, and interiors, but it is no longer a guaranteed advantage. Edge issue 430, on sale 29 October 2026, described a preview in which Nelson’s motorcycle hit spike strips that were almost invisible at high speed at night. Jason and Lucia continued on foot, and a German Shepherd K9 caught and pinned Jason.

Developers urged Nelson not to shoot the dog. The reported confirmed consequence of shooting a police dog is damage to the Criminal Profile. The preview does not publish a K9 star threshold, prove a scent-trail mechanic, or establish whether shooting also raises stars immediately. Treat a dog as a reason to change route, use cover, or surrender the vehicle—not as a target.

Spike strips are a particular danger on dark, fast road escapes. Changing vehicles, slowing before blind intersections, or leaving the road is safer than trying to thread a strip you cannot see.
Police are not displayed on the minimap in the GTA V way, according to GameSpot, grandtheft.gg, and GTAbase coverage. Focus Mode is reported to reveal officers through walls, making it the best way to check the next corner before committing to an alley or building.
Why does leaving the district matter after the stars change?
Wanted heat is regional rather than a single bubble attached permanently to the player. Nelson showed a map hot-area indicator and explained that police would remain in the district for a while; hovering back over it could still show one star. Losing the patrol in front of you therefore solves only the immediate pursuit.

Wanted stars describe the current crime and what dispatch can act on. Criminal Profile is a longer-term record of how violent your behavior is and how you treat your partner. Nelson told The New York Times that giving actions meaning in those areas is new for GTA.

Defending yourself from pursuers is not presented as equivalent to repeatedly escalating without reason. Shooting a police dog is the clearest confirmed penalty so far: Edge’s preview coverage says it damages Criminal Profile. Fan labels such as “Professional,” “Aggressive,” “Violent,” or “Psycho” have not been confirmed by Rockstar and should not be treated as official ranks.
What remains unknown before the 19 November 2026 launch?
Rockstar has shown the direction of the system, not a complete manual. The following details remain unpublished or unconfirmed:

- The radius, shape, and decay timer of a hot area.

- The wanted-level threshold for K9 deployment.
- Whether every mission uses identical police rules.
- A guaranteed number of seconds needed to clear any star.
Claims about returning Pay ’n’ Spray services or trackers on every police and some civilian cars come from individual preview accounts rather than a published Rockstar specification, so they should not be used as dependable escape plans.
When can you use this system?
Grand Theft Auto VI is officially scheduled for 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The wanted-system details above come from Rockstar’s Extended Look and press previews available by 29 October 2026. You will need the game on one of those launch platforms to apply these tactics; a PC edition has not been officially announced for launch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does simply carrying a visible gun make civilians call the police?
Not automatically in the behavior described by the previews. GameSpot’s 10 September 2026 explainer says the fictional Florida-style open-carry context allows someone to walk with a weapon without an automatic report; aiming it at people is what prompts alarm or a call. Firing then adds the strongest escalation risk.
Can a mask erase a report after an officer has already seen me?
That has not been established. Masks are expected to limit what witnesses can report, but Rockstar has not shown them retroactively deleting clothing, vehicle, CCTV, weapon, or partner clues once dispatch has them.
What happens if Jason is arrested while Lucia gets away?
The preview guidance reported by grandtheft.gg says one protagonist being arrested still produces the Busted screen, even if the other escapes. Splitting up is therefore a way to reduce the description police search for, not a guaranteed way to save the mission.
Will every GTA 6 mission use the same wanted rules?
Rockstar has not confirmed that. The published previews show the open-world system and specific demonstrations, but they do not state that every mission, scripted chase, or restricted area shares the same witness, camera, disguise, or K9 behavior.
