To limit GTA 6, set parental controls on your child’s own account: use Playtime Settings on PS5 or Screen time on Xbox Series X|S. Xbox also offers an optional per-game limit; Sony’s PS5 timer covers the console as a whole. Set a separate age restriction if you want to block the game rather than merely limit when it can be played. These are console and family-account controls—not an in-game GTA 6 timer—and they do not remove the game’s mature content.

What should parents know before setting a GTA 6 time limit?

Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Its rating lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, and In-Game Purchases. Time controls can limit access, but they do not censor or remove any of that content.

Parental limits apply to a child account in a family group. If your child plays on your adult profile, that profile’s family limits do not protect them. Create a separate child account with the child’s real date of birth, add it to your family, and make sure the child signs in to that account when playing.

GTA 6 is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. These controls can be configured before release. Neither Sony, Microsoft nor Rockstar publishes a recommended number of daily hours for GTA 6; you choose the schedule that fits your household.

How do I set playtime limits for GTA 6 on PS5?

On PS5, a family manager—or a parent or guardian appointed by the family manager—sets the child’s Playtime Settings. The timer applies to use of the console, not just GTA 6, and can also apply to that child’s PS4 playtime.

  1. Sign in to the PS5 as the family manager, parent or guardian.
  2. Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
  3. Select the child’s account. Set its Time Zone if it has not already been set; Sony requires this before playtime controls can be adjusted.
  4. Open Playtime Settings and turn Restrict Playtime on.
  5. Under Duration and Playable Hours, choose how long the child may play and the hours when play is allowed. Choose Same Every Day for one schedule, or By Days of the Week to set different limits for school days and weekends.
  6. Under When Playtime Ends, choose Notify Only or Log Out, then save the settings.

Notify Only gives the child an on-screen warning when the limit is reached; it does not end the session. Log Out is the stricter choice because it signs the child out when time expires. The PS5 can show notifications as the limit approaches, and the child can use Ask for More Playtime. A family manager, parent or guardian can then change the time or decline the request. An adult can also choose Change Playtime for Today on the console or in the PlayStation Family app.

You can also manage the schedule remotely in the PlayStation Family app: select the child and open Playtime Settings. The app requires iOS 14 or later, or Android 8 or later. On the web, use Account Management > Family Management, select the child, choose Edit beside the playtime limit, and save.

Can I limit only GTA 6 on PS5?

No Sony PS5 family setting provides a separate playtime timer for GTA 6. The PS5 limit is console-wide: time spent in GTA 6 counts against the same allowance as time spent in other PS5 games. If the child also uses a PS4, Sony says the same playtime restrictions apply there too.

That means a two-hour console allowance is not two hours reserved for GTA 6. It is two hours of total play on the covered consoles. If you want a time limit on GTA 6 alone, Xbox has a per-game control; on PS5, the available family timer cannot distinguish GTA 6 from other games.

How do I set playtime limits for GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S?

Microsoft’s family controls offer device-level Screen time schedules for Xbox and Windows, plus optional App and game limits for a particular title. Use the Xbox Family Settings app or the Microsoft Family website; Microsoft does not make the Xbox dashboard the primary place to configure screen-time schedules.

In the Xbox Family Settings app:

  1. Open the app and select the child under Your Family.
  2. Select Screen Time.
  3. Under Schedule, select the bar under the day, choose the days of the week, and save.
  4. Set the Time Limit for those days and save.
  5. Set the permitted Time Range—the hours when the child may play—and save.

The app lets an adult extend a child’s playtime remotely when appropriate. Check the current app labels, as menus can change with updates.

On the Microsoft Family website:

  1. Sign in at family.microsoft.com or account.microsoft.com/family.
  2. Open the child’s profile, choose More options > Screen time.
  3. Turn on Use one schedule for all devices if you want the same schedule to cover Xbox and Windows devices. Leave schedules separate if the child should have different allowances on each.
  4. Set the time limit and allowed hours for each day of the week, then save.

Microsoft says its family controls work across Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11 PCs. A unified schedule can therefore use one allowance across devices rather than treating a console and PC as separate playtime budgets.

How can I set a time limit for GTA 6 alone on Xbox?

Use Microsoft Family’s App and game limits to cap a specific game rather than relying only on a general device schedule. This is the Xbox option for a GTA 6-specific limit.

  1. On the Microsoft Family website, open the child’s profile and select More options > App and game limits.
  2. Turn app and game limits on. Add the relevant device if the site asks you to.
  3. Find GTA 6 in the child’s list of apps and games, select it, and configure the allowed time and schedule.
  4. Save the limit. If GTA 6 is not listed yet, check again after the child account has used the game and it appears in the activity list.

Microsoft’s family hub says per-game limits are shared across Xbox consoles and Windows devices through the family account. If your goal is to cap GTA 6 but leave other games available, use the title-specific limit as well as considering whether a general device schedule is needed for the rest of the child’s Xbox or PC use.

What happens when Xbox screen time runs out?

Microsoft’s screen-time countdown starts when the child signs in and stops when they sign out. Consequently, leaving the child signed in while away from the console can use up their allowance even if nobody is actively playing.

Screen-time access is tied to signing in, so do not assume that reaching the limit makes every game or app inaccessible in every circumstance. Microsoft recommends setting Signed-out content restrictions as an additional safeguard. The exact console menu can vary by dashboard version; check the current family and content-restriction settings on your Xbox. Sign the child out when they finish playing, rather than leaving the account open.

Xbox can also provide screen-time notifications and activity reports. These help an adult see when time is running low and review what was played. Use the family app to adjust a schedule or extend time when you decide to allow it.

How do I stop a child from launching GTA 6 at all?

Set the child’s content rating restriction below the game’s M rating. A time limit alone does not block an M-rated game during permitted hours, and an age restriction alone does not create a daily schedule.

On PS5: choose an age-appropriate restriction preset, then review Age Level for Games for the child’s account. Sony’s presets include Child, Early Teens, Late Teens, Older and No Restriction, with the option to customize. Set the restriction to reflect the child’s age. The child may request an exception from the blocked-game screen; an adult can approve or decline through the PlayStation Family app, email or console notifications. Do not add GTA 6 as an allowed game if the intention is to block it.

On Xbox: in the Xbox Family Settings app, select the child, open Content Restrictions, turn on Filter Inappropriate Content, and choose Allow Content Suitable for Age. Parents can also allow or block individual titles. On the Microsoft website, use the child’s content settings to block inappropriate apps, games and media, then set the permitted age rating. Console settings also offer content restrictions under Settings > Privacy and online safety for the family member.

ESRB’s example makes the rating cutoff concrete: a restriction set to 11 allows games rated up to E10+, but not T or M. Menu wording and rating categories can vary by region, so use the rating system and storefront for your country. The ESRB and US Xbox listing show GTA 6 as M 17+; some regional store displays may not match the US page.

What other parental controls should I set?

Playtime and age filters address different risks. For GTA 6, also review spending and communication controls so a child cannot use an allowed play session to make unwanted purchases or interact without the limits you intended.

Communication Communication and User-Generated Content restrictions Social and online communication settings

Spending on PS5: go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, select the child, then Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit. Sony sets the default monthly limit to 0. Purchases draw on the family manager’s wallet, and an appointed guardian can change the limit. Keeping the limit at $0 prevents spending through the child account unless an adult changes it.

Spending on Xbox: turn on the setting that requires adult approval for purchases in the child’s family account. Adults can approve requests through email or the Microsoft Family website. A child may still be able to spend gift-card funds already on the account, so approval settings are not a substitute for checking the account balance and purchase options.

Communication on PS5: under Communication and User-Generated Content, restrictions can disable sending text and voice messages to other players, sharing user-generated content, viewing others’ content and linking some third-party communication apps. Pre-written in-game messages may still be available.

Can parental controls make GTA 6 kid-safe?

No. Parental controls can block access, set times, limit spending and restrict communications, but they cannot make the game’s scenes or dialogue age-appropriate. GTA 6’s M 17+ rating describes mature content; if that content is the concern, blocking the game is different from allowing it under a timer.

Decide first whether the child should be allowed to play at all. If not, set the age filter and do not approve an exception. If you choose to allow an older teen to play, combine the age decision with a time schedule, purchase approval and communication settings. The controls do not replace a conversation about the game or supervision appropriate to the child.

How do I stop my kid playing GTA 6 all night?

Set both an allowed time range and a daily duration, then choose an end-of-time behavior that actually stops play. On PS5, select Log Out rather than Notify Only if a warning alone is not enough. On Xbox, set a schedule that closes the permitted hours, and make sure the child is signed out when finished.

Check for simple ways around the schedule. On PS5, a child may try a guest login or create a new local user; review PS5 Console Restrictions, change its default 4-digit passcode from 0000, and disable guest login or new-user creation if needed. Keep the console from remaining signed in to the adult’s account. On Xbox, consider signed-out content restrictions because some content may still be available when the child is not signed in. These settings are most effective when the child uses only their own account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limits also cannot follow a child onto a friend’s adult account, prevent watching a gameplay video, or control a separate phone conversation. They are account and console controls, not a way to supervise every screen or social interaction.

Which console gives parents more control over GTA 6 playtime?

PS5 provides a straightforward console-wide schedule and a clear choice between a warning and logging the child out. Xbox offers device screen-time scheduling plus a per-game limit, which is more suitable if the household wants to cap GTA 6 without applying that same game limit to every title.

Neither platform’s timer is a substitute for a content restriction. Both need a separate age filter if the goal is to prevent the child profile from launching an M-rated game. On PS5, the main trade-off is that the time allowance applies to other console play too. On Xbox, the extra per-game option brings more setup and still relies on the correct child account and device settings.

What should I check before letting the child play?

Do a brief account-level check before relying on the limits. Confirm the child—not an adult or guest—is signed in, review the schedule and age rating, and make sure purchase and communication rules match your decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Account: the child has a separate account in the family group, and the console is not left signed in as an adult.
  • Age: GTA 6 is blocked if the child should not play it; any exception is intentional.
  • Time: permitted hours and daily duration reflect your household schedule. On PS5, decide whether a warning or log-out is appropriate; on Xbox, account for any Windows devices using a shared schedule.
  • Spending: PS5 monthly spending remains at $0 unless you intend otherwise; Xbox purchase requests require adult approval.
  • Communication: review chat, friend, multiplayer and user-generated-content permissions.
  • Bypasses: review PS5 guest/new-user access and Xbox signed-out restrictions.

After changing PlayStation parental controls while the child is already in a game, have them sign out and sign back in so the changes take effect. Also verify settings using the child account rather than assuming an adult account’s view confirms what the child can access.

How we chose the settings in this guide

The steps here follow the platform controls identified for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the ESRB rating used to explain why age restrictions and playtime limits must be treated separately. The practical distinction is the scope of each control: Sony’s family timer is console-wide, while Microsoft supports device schedules and an optional app/game-specific limit. Regional rating displays can differ, so check the local storefront and rating board for the child’s region rather than relying on a screenshot from another country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does GTA 6 have a built-in playtime timer?

No in-game GTA 6 session timer is documented in the available platform or publisher material. Use the console family controls, and do not assume a setting exists inside the game unless Rockstar documents one.

Will PS5 parental-control changes apply immediately?

If the child is already playing when you change the controls, Sony advises having them sign out and sign back in for the changes to take effect. That refresh is especially useful before relying on a new age restriction or schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can my child still buy GTA 6 add-ons with a gift card on Xbox?

Microsoft’s family guidance notes that children may still spend gift-card funds already on their account, even when adult approval is required for purchases. Check existing account funds as well as the purchase-approval setting.

Does an Xbox playtime limit count time when the console is idle?

The countdown begins when the child signs in and ends when they sign out, so leaving the account signed in can consume the allowance even while nobody is playing. Have the child sign out when finished.
