GTA VI is not available yet. Rockstar currently lists November 19, 2026 as the launch date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, so there is no verified in-game parental-controls screen to configure. Prepare the console instead: put the child on a supervised account, block games above the age you approve, require purchase approval or set a funded balance, and prevent access through an adult, new or guest profile. The US ESRB entry rates GTA VI Mature 17+ and also lists in-game purchases, so a $0 spending setting does not make the game age-appropriate. This guide gives the exact PS5 and Xbox paths available before launch and explains what each control does—and does not do.
What should parents set before GTA VI launches?
Decide access and spending separately. First determine whether a child should be allowed to play a title rated Mature 17+; then configure the store controls that govern purchases on the child’s account. Finally, close the common bypasses: signing into an unrestricted adult profile, creating another user, or entering as a guest.

- Apply an age-based game restriction. GTA VI’s current US rating is Mature 17+, with descriptors for blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, drugs and alcohol, and in-game purchases. The ESRB record is the current source for that classification.
- Set a purchase rule. PS5 has a monthly child-account limit that defaults to zero. Xbox uses purchase-approval requests and/or a finite child balance rather than documenting the same monthly-cap model.
- Protect the administrator routes. A console passcode, adult-profile login passcode and restrictions on new users and guests stop a child from simply switching profiles.
Rockstar describes GTA VI as a single-player experience. Its rating and storefront information still flag in-game purchases, but there is no confirmed list of currencies, add-ons, online modes or game-specific spending menu to configure before release. Treat the settings below as platform safeguards, not as proof of a GTA VI menu.
How do I block GTA 6 on PS5?
Add the child to your PlayStation family, set the child’s game age level below Mature 17+, and review any exception request yourself. The setting is account-based, so the child must play while signed in to that supervised account.

1. Add or confirm the child’s PlayStation account
Use PlayStation Family Management on the PS5, in Account Management on the web, or in the PlayStation Family app. Create a child account with the child’s real date of birth and add it to the family managed by the adult family manager. Do not let the child use the family manager’s account for ordinary play; restrictions are tied to the child account.
2. Set the game and app age level
- On the PS5, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child, then choose Parental Controls.
- Set Age Level for Games and Apps to the level you consider appropriate. A level below Mature 17+ will restrict GTA VI under the current US rating.
PlayStation may let the child send a request for a specific exception. An approved exception changes access for that title; it is not the same thing as approving a purchase. Review the title, rating and your household rule before accepting a request. Regional rating systems and menu wording can differ, so choose the equivalent age level shown for your account’s country.
3. Set the PS5 spending limit to zero or a deliberate amount
- Return to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > [child] > Parental Controls.
- Open Monthly Spending Limit.
- Leave it at 0 if the child should not make PlayStation Store purchases. Sony says the default is zero.
- If you intentionally allow purchases, enter the maximum monthly amount and explain what it covers.
Purchases made by a child account draw from the family manager’s PlayStation Store wallet. A zero limit prevents child-account Store spending, but it does not revoke a game already granted through another account, cancel an existing subscription, or stop someone from buying on an unrestricted adult profile.
You can make the same change online at Account Management > Family Management > [child] > Edit > Monthly Spending Limit, or in the PlayStation Family app. The official instructions are in PlayStation’s PS5 parental-controls and spending-limits guide.
4. Add time and communication safeguards
In the child’s Parental Controls, configure playtime if you want the console to enforce a schedule. Under Communication and User-Generated Content, choose Restrict when you do not want the child communicating or viewing user-created material through platform features. These are general PlayStation controls; they do not establish that GTA VI itself includes multiplayer chat or user-generated content.
If you change a restriction while the child is playing, Sony advises signing the child out and back in so the new rule is applied reliably.
How do I stop a child bypassing PS5 restrictions?
Secure the console, the adult account and account-creation routes independently. The console-restriction passcode and an adult account’s login passcode are different credentials, so set both.

- Change the console-restriction passcode. Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > PS5 Console Restrictions and replace the default 0000 with a private code. Anyone who knows the default can change console-level settings.
- Protect the adult profile. Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Login Settings and set an adult-account login passcode. Do not share it with the child.
- Block extra profiles. In Settings > Family and Parental Controls > PS5 Console Restrictions, set User Creation and Guest Login to Not Allowed.
- Keep the child signed in only to the supervised account. Check which profile is active before starting a game or approving a request.
These steps prevent a simple profile switch, but they do not replace the age-level setting. A child who is allowed to use an adult profile can still encounter that profile’s permissions, even when the child’s own account is tightly restricted.
For Sony’s current menu locations and recovery information, see PlayStation’s guide to preventing parental-control changes.
How do I turn on Ask a parent for GTA 6 purchases on Xbox?
Put the child in your Microsoft family as a Member, then enable Ask a parent for purchases. Every covered Store transaction generates an approval request instead of silently charging a payment method, provided the child is buying from the supervised account.
1. Add the child as a Microsoft family member
Add the child’s Microsoft account through Microsoft Family Safety, or on the console at Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members. The child should use that account for Xbox play. In Xbox Family Settings, configure the child’s age-based content filter, screen-time schedule and communication permissions as appropriate.
2. Enable purchase approval
- Sign in as a family organizer.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members.
- Select the child and open Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize.
- Choose Buy & download, then set Ask a parent to On.
Microsoft documents this setting in its Xbox purchase-approval instructions. Read each request before approving it; approval is a decision about that transaction, not a blanket confirmation that the game is suitable for the child.
3. Use a finite balance when you want a fixed allowance
In Microsoft Family Safety, select the child and open Manage spending. Add only the amount the child may spend. Microsoft says the balance cannot be overdrawn. This is a funded balance, not a documented PS5-style monthly spending cap: when the balance is exhausted, another payment method or an organizer’s approval may still be relevant depending on the account configuration.
If a card is attached to the child’s account, enable Require approval for every purchase. Purchase notifications and activity reports help you review transactions, but they are monitoring tools and do not substitute for approval or a deliberately limited balance. Microsoft’s explanation of balances, cards and approvals is in Family Safety spending limits.

How do I block age-inappropriate games on Xbox Series X|S?
Use the child’s age-based content filter in Xbox Family Settings before the console is used for GTA VI. The filter is the Xbox equivalent of an account-level game-age gate; it is separate from purchase approval.
- Open Xbox Family Settings or Microsoft Family Safety and select the child.
- Set the content filter to the maximum game age you approve.
- Save the rule and confirm the child is signed in to the Member account when launching games.
- Set communication, multiplayer and screen-time rules separately if your household requires them.
Because the current ESRB classification is Mature 17+, a filter below that level should prevent access under the US rating system. Xbox ratings and labels can vary by country, so use the age category presented for your region. Microsoft’s current family-settings overview is available through Xbox Family Settings guidance.
How do I prevent Xbox sign-in and guest bypasses?
Protect adult credentials and turn on signed-out restrictions. Microsoft specifically recommends a PIN to prevent somebody from signing in as another person and provides signed-out content restrictions so console rules still apply when nobody is signed in.
- Set a console or account PIN that the child does not know.
- Do not leave an adult Microsoft account signed in for unrestricted purchases.
- Enable Signed-out content restrictions in Family Safety so a signed-out session cannot evade the child’s content rules.
- Check which account is active before approving a purchase or starting a restricted game.
Xbox’s family controls govern the Microsoft account and the console’s sign-in state. They cannot police a separate adult account whose credentials are available to the child, so password and PIN discipline matters as much as the filter itself. Review Microsoft’s current purchase-control support page and Family Safety settings when the console software changes.

PS5 gives the child account an explicit monthly Store limit, with zero as the default. Xbox’s documented controls combine an approval switch with a child-funded balance; Microsoft does not present that combination as the same monthly-cap feature.
| Decision | PS5 | Xbox Series X|S |
|---|---|---|
| Content gate | Child-account Age Level for Games and Apps; review individual exception requests. | Child-account age-based content filter in Xbox Family Settings. |
| Purchase control | Monthly Spending Limit; default is 0. Child purchases use the family manager’s wallet. | Ask a parent approval, a funded child balance, and optional approval for card-funded purchases. No equivalent monthly cap is documented in the cited support material. |
| Time and communication | Family Management and the PlayStation Family app. | Xbox Family Settings and Microsoft Family Safety. |
| Bypass protection | Console-restriction passcode, adult login passcode, and blocked user creation/guest login. | Protected sign-in PIN and signed-out content restrictions. |
On either console, content approval comes first. A child who is not permitted to play a Mature 17+ game should remain blocked even if the spending control is set to zero, because spending and suitability are separate decisions.
Does GTA VI have its own parental-controls or spending menu?
There is no verified Rockstar-documented GTA VI parental-controls menu at the time of this pre-release guide. Do not assume that a zero platform limit blocks every possible form of access, or that an in-game setting will exist on launch day.

That combination does not establish a GTA Online mode, a named virtual currency, recurring charges, or a game-specific spending slider. Use the platform account controls above until Rockstar publishes specific post-launch documentation.

What about GTA+ and subscriptions?
Check promotional terms on the adult account that makes the purchase. The US PlayStation preorder offer includes a GTA+ promotional month that becomes a paid monthly subscription unless it is cancelled before the next payment date. Xbox says its preorder GTA+ month cannot be redeemed by a child account restricted from age-restricted content.
A child-account Store cap is not a promise that an already-started subscription will be cancelled. Review the subscription’s renewal date and payment method directly, and cancel it through the relevant platform account if you do not want a later charge.
Does the physical GTA VI box contain a disc?
No. Rockstar says the physical Standard Edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is expected from November 12, 2026, but the box contains a digital download code rather than a disc. For PS5 codes, Rockstar recommends buying from a retailer in the same country as the platform account to avoid region-activation problems.
A physical code-in-box purchase is an adult-directed buying option, not a parental-control method. The code still has to be redeemed on an account, and the console’s age and spending rules still determine who can access or purchase related content. Rockstar’s platform and edition information is at Rockstar Games Customer Support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow much does GTA VI cost, and should that affect the limit?
Take-Two has announced US launch prices of $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. These are publisher-announced prices, not a guarantee of every retailer’s current price or of regional pricing. A spending limit should reflect your household’s rule for all Store purchases, not just the game’s base price.
If an adult buys the game as a gift, redeem it on the account intended to own it and verify which other accounts can use that console’s licenses. Do not give a child an unrestricted payment card or gift-card balance as a substitute for account controls when the goal is to prevent unapproved spending.

What should I check on launch day?
Recheck the settings after the console downloads system updates and after the child first signs in. Menu labels can move, and a new title may trigger an exception request even when the account’s age filter was configured earlier.
- Confirm GTA VI is blocked or allowed exactly as intended on the child’s account.
- Verify PS5’s Monthly Spending Limit is still zero or the amount you chose.
- On Xbox, test that Ask a parent produces an approval request and that any child balance is the intended amount.
- Check that adult accounts require a passcode and that new users and guests cannot be used on PS5.
- On Xbox, confirm the sign-in PIN and signed-out content restrictions are active.
- Review subscription renewal dates, especially any GTA+ promotional month, on the adult purchasing account.
- Look at purchase-activity notifications after the first session so an unexpected charge is caught promptly.
Before November 19, 2026, reconfirm the release date, ESRB record, family-setting labels, GTA+ language and code-in-box availability. After launch, check Rockstar’s support pages for any game-specific controls rather than assuming that platform settings have been expanded.

What these controls cannot guarantee
- They cannot decide whether a Mature 17+ game is appropriate for a particular child; that remains a parent or guardian decision.
- They cannot control an adult account whose password or PIN the child can use.
- They do not prove what GTA VI’s final in-game economy, online features or post-launch menus will be.
- They do not automatically cancel a subscription that was already accepted on an adult account.
- They do not make a digital code in a physical box behave like a disc or remove regional redemption requirements.
The safest pre-launch configuration is therefore straightforward: decide on the Mature 17+ access question first, keep the child on a supervised account, use PS5’s zero monthly limit or Xbox approval-plus-balance controls, and lock every alternate sign-in path.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my child request access to GTA VI after I block it?
On PS5, a child can send a request for a specific exception when an age-level rule blocks a game. The request does not grant access automatically; the family manager must review and approve it, and that decision is separate from approving a purchase.
Will setting a PS5 limit to zero cancel GTA+?
No. The monthly limit governs eligible child-account PlayStation Store spending. A GTA+ subscription already accepted on an adult account follows its own renewal and cancellation terms, so check and cancel it on that account before the next payment date.
Can Xbox approval controls stop purchases made while an adult is signed in?
Not reliably. Ask a parent applies to the supervised child account, so an adult profile with an available payment method can bypass that request flow. Protect adult credentials with a PIN and require the child to use the Microsoft family Member account.
Does a physical GTA VI purchase avoid digital parental controls?
No. The announced physical Standard Edition contains a download code rather than a disc. Redemption, game access and related Store transactions still depend on the platform account and its family settings.
