Short answer: Rockstar has not announced GTA 6 Online, so there is no official Mbps, ping or gigabytes-per-hour requirement. The game launching on 19 November 2026 is listed by both console stores as a single-player experience with offline play. The immediate internet requirement is the installation: an unofficial but independently corroborated PlayStation tracker figure puts the PS5 Standard Edition download at about 210 GB. Plan for at least that much data plus unpacking space and patches. At ideal advertised speeds, 10 Mbps takes about 46 hours 40 minutes, 100 Mbps about 4 hours 40 minutes and 1 Gbps about 28 minutes. Once the story is installed, it can run offline; any future Online mode will need a stable, low-latency connection, but Rockstar has published no target.
Is GTA 6 Online available at launch?
No. Rockstar’s June 2026 pre-order material and the live PlayStation and Xbox listings describe Grand Theft Auto VI as single-player. The store wording is explicit: “Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.” PlayStation lists one player and offline play enabled; Xbox lists single player only, with no online-multiplayer or cross-platform capability flag.

Rockstar announced the launch for Thursday, 19 November 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PC availability has not been announced. A later GTA 6 Online mode, its release date, price, crossplay policy and network requirements are all unknown. Rockstar’s licence text saying that some features “may require internet connection, Rockstar Games account registration” is standard legal wording, not an Online announcement.
For context only, GTA Online launched two weeks after Grand Theft Auto V in 2013, while Red Dead Online’s beta arrived about a month after Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar has not said GTA 6 will follow either timetable. Existing GTA Online for Grand Theft Auto V is continuing; Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick said on the 7 August 2026 earnings call that “we expect to continue to support GTA Online going forward.”

How much data does GTA 6 use to install?
Use about 210 GB as the current planning figure for the PS5 Standard Edition, while treating it as unofficial. PlayStation Game Size posted that number on 27 October 2026, including a 12 November pre-load and 19 November release, and Insider Gaming independently corroborated it. Rockstar has not confirmed the file size. The live store data visible when pre-load opens should settle it.
The 210 GB figure is being treated as the download/install package, not a guaranteed final space requirement. Consoles need temporary room to unpack, copy and verify files, so guidance published by TechWiser is to clear roughly 230–250 GB on the internal SSD. A day-one update could require additional download data.
| Console or edition | What is established |
|---|---|
| PS5 Standard Edition | About 210 GB reported by PlayStation Game Size; unofficial |
| Xbox Series X|S | No official size; an estimate of about 240 GB from ISPreview is not a store listing |
| Ultimate Edition | Size not stated |
Compression can explain a platform difference. ISPreview estimated that Sony’s Kraken compression is often 20–35% more efficient than Xbox compression on recent releases, but that does not establish GTA 6’s Xbox size.
How long will GTA 6 take to download?
For a 210 GB package, the theoretical transfer time is calculated by converting 210 GB to 1,680 gigabits and dividing by the advertised line rate. These are best-case times when the store server, your router and the rest of the network all deliver the full speed.
| Advertised connection | Ideal time for 210 GB | Common plan example |
|---|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | 46 hours 40 minutes | Basic copper or fixed-wireless service |
| 25 Mbps | 18 hours 40 minutes | NBN 25 |
| 50 Mbps | 9 hours 20 minutes | NBN 50 |
| 100 Mbps | 4 hours 40 minutes | NBN 100 |
| 200 Mbps | 2 hours 20 minutes | — |
| 300 Mbps | 1 hour 33 minutes | — |
| 500 Mbps | 56 minutes | NBN 500 |
| 750 Mbps | 37 minutes 20 seconds | NBN 750 |
| 1 Gbps | 28 minutes | NBN 1000 |
| 2 Gbps | 14 minutes theoretical | NBN 2000 |
Real waits are longer because advertised speeds are not guaranteed throughput. Wi-Fi interference, walls, other household traffic, peak-time congestion and the console store’s servers all reduce the transfer rate. After the progress bar reaches 100%, the console can still spend time installing, copying and verifying; broadband analyst Max Beckett of Uswitch warned that completion of the download does not mean immediate play. A launch-day patch may follow.

A 2 Gbps service will not make one wired PS5 or Xbox twice as fast: the consoles’ Ethernet interfaces top out at roughly 1 Gbps, according to coverage from Wilson’s Media and Newegg.
Can I download GTA 6 on 10 Mbps, 25 Mbps or NBN 50?
Yes, provided you start early and have enough allowance, but the wait can span most of a day or several days. A 10 Mbps line needs about 46 hours 40 minutes in ideal conditions; 25 Mbps needs about 18 hours 40 minutes; 50 Mbps needs about 9 hours 20 minutes.
Use the 12 November 2026 pre-load rather than waiting for the 19 November launch. Enable automatic downloads and leave the console in rest or sleep mode. On a slower connection, pause other large downloads and avoid simultaneous 4K streaming or video calls. If your service is unstable, begin as soon as pre-load becomes available so a brief outage does not consume launch day.
At 100 Mbps, a quiet connection can pull the package in roughly one evening, although Uswitch describes a real-world 100 Mbps download as nearly five hours. At 500 Mbps or faster, the transfer is theoretically under an hour, subject to the same server and installation delays.
Does GTA 6 need unlimited data?
Unlimited home broadband is the practical choice. A capped plan must provide at least 210 GB of unused allowance, with headroom for the unpacking process, patches and every other person’s usage during the billing period. A 100–200 GB mobile or fixed-wireless allowance will not cover the current install estimate.

Physical packaging does not solve the data problem. Rockstar’s store says, “Physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12. A disc will not be included in the box.” A boxed purchase therefore consumes essentially the same download allowance as a digital purchase.
After installation, the single-player campaign can run offline. Updates, account checks, optional connected features, Remote Play and any eventual Online mode use additional data that Rockstar has not quantified. No published GTA 6 Online session figure in megabytes per hour exists.
What storage space should I clear?
The 210 GB download is a large share of console storage. An original PS5 has about 667 GB usable, making the game nearly one-third of the available space. A PS5 Slim has about 840 GB usable, so it is roughly one-quarter. Xbox Series X has around 802 GB usable from its 1 TB drive; the original Series S has about 364 GB usable from 512 GB, leaving much less room for temporary files and other games.
- PS5: Delete or move games until 230–250 GB is free, or install a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD. A USB drive can store PS5 games but cannot run GTA 6 directly from USB.
- Xbox Series X|S: Clear the internal drive or use an official expansion card. Series S owners should expect the tightest storage decision because its usable pool is about 364 GB.
- Either console: Check free space before 12 November, not after the download starts; insufficient temporary space can stop installation even when the nominal file size fits.
Is Ethernet better than Wi-Fi for GTA 6?
Yes. A direct Ethernet cable is the simplest reliability upgrade for a large download and for any future multiplayer. Uswitch’s Max Beckett recommends wiring the console to the router; toob likewise notes that Ethernet avoids the interference, walls and packet loss that can affect Wi-Fi.
- Use a Cat 6 cable for typical in-home gigabit connections.
- If wiring is impossible, place the router in an open, central position and connect on a clean 5 GHz band.
- A Wi-Fi 6 router is the sensible general upgrade; Wi-Fi 6E helps in crowded apartments. Wi-Fi 7 mainly benefits PS5 Pro owners and busy households, while Xbox Series X|S hardware uses Wi-Fi 5.
- A mesh system with a wired node is generally more reliable for a distant console than a cheap range extender. MoCA over coax is usually preferable to powerline networking where a television coax outlet is available.
For Remote Play, platform guidance cited by Newegg recommends at least 15 Mbps for PlayStation Remote Play. Microsoft recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or a wired connection for Xbox Remote Play. Those figures concern streaming the game from your console, not downloading the 210 GB package.

What would a future GTA 6 Online connection need?
There is no Rockstar-published minimum speed, recommended speed, ping target or monthly allowance for GTA 6 Online. Any precise “3 Mbps minimum” or “X GB per hour” claim is speculation until Rockstar documents the mode.
The useful distinction is between throughput and responsiveness. A fast line gets the initial game and updates onto the console; once an Online mode exists, stable latency, low jitter and low packet loss will matter more during driving, chases and firefights. NAT also affects matchmaking and party chat: PlayStation Type 2 and Xbox Open are the practical targets. Enabling UPnP on the router often resolves a strict NAT, although router menus and policies vary.
Do not buy a faster package solely for an unannounced mode. Choose speed based on the 210 GB installation and the number of people sharing your connection, then prioritize stability and Ethernet for interactive play.

Rockstar’s store states, “Pre-load begins November 12, 2026.” Launch is 19 November 2026, generally at midnight local time; the sampled US PlayStation listing shows 05:00 UTC. Starting pre-load on the 12th is especially important below 100 Mbps.
- United Kingdom: Uswitch cites a 170.2 Mbps average broadband speed, which would transfer 210 GB in about 2 hours 45 minutes theoretically. Wildanet cites a 73.21 Mbps median, implying roughly 6 hours 20 minutes. Mean and median describe different households, so neither predicts an individual line. Uswitch’s survey of 1,000 employed adult UK gamers found one-third expected broadband problems downloading GTA VI, 30% expected connection problems after starting to play, and 6% feared their connection could not handle the download.
- Australia: NBN 25, 100 and 500 correspond to approximately 18 hours 40 minutes, 4 hours 40 minutes and 56 minutes under ideal conditions. FTTN and FTTC services generally cannot take NBN 500 or faster without a suitable FTTP or HFC path. Console Ethernet still limits one device to about 1 Gbps on an NBN 2000 plan.
- Mexico: The Competitive Intelligence Unit, citing the March 2026 Ookla Speedtest Global Index, reported a 104.3 Mbps average fixed connection. That is roughly 4 hours 40 minutes for 210 GB at a sustained 100 Mbps-equivalent rate.
Openreach technology director Trevor Linney said the company is watching GTA 6 as a potential major traffic event, while Wildanet’s Simon Hughes warned that very large downloads can compete with streaming, home working and calls. Those observations describe network demand, not a GTA 6 Online bandwidth specification.

- Any GTA 6 Online release date, price, crossplay, bandwidth, ping or per-session data figure.
- PC availability and PC network requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play GTA 6 without an internet connection after installing it?
The PlayStation listing marks offline play as enabled, and the launch product is described as single-player. You may still need occasional connectivity for account registration, patches or other services, but the installed story is not a continuously streamed game.
Will a physical GTA 6 copy avoid the download?
No. Rockstar says the box contains a download code and no disc. It supports pre-loading on 12 November but does not remove the roughly 210 GB transfer.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How much free space does GTA 6 leave on a PS5?
The game itself is reported at about 210 GB, but temporary unpacking and verification mean you should clear roughly 230–250 GB before starting. The exact final requirement can change when the official package appears.
Is a mobile hotspot suitable for downloading GTA 6?
Only if its allowance comfortably exceeds 210 GB and the connection remains stable for many hours. Typical 100–200 GB mobile caps are smaller than the current install estimate, and cellular congestion can make the theoretical download times much longer.
