The safest starting point for GTA 6 on a TV or monitor is simple: select the display’s Game Mode, turn on HDR for the console HDMI input, calibrate HDR in the console menus, disable automatic picture processing and Dynamic Tone Mapping, and use HGiG if the display provides it. A direct HDMI 2.1-capable connection is appropriate when your target resolution, refresh rate or VRR mode requires that bandwidth.

These settings follow Rockstar Games Customer Support guidance. They do not imply that GTA 6 will run at 60 or 120 frames per second. Rockstar has confirmed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions and a November 19, 2026 release date, but has not published the game’s launch frame-rate modes, VRR range, HDR format or exact in-game HDR sliders.

What are the best baseline TV and monitor settings for GTA 6?

Use the display’s lowest-latency gaming preset, enable HDR on the exact HDMI input used by the console, and remove processing that changes the image after it leaves the game. Complete the console’s own HDR calibration before adjusting model-specific picture controls.

Display control Recommended starting value Reason and qualification
Picture preset Game Mode, Game Optimizer or equivalent low-latency mode Reduces processing and input delay. Rockstar Games Customer Support says, “Enable the Game Mode preset, if available.”
HDR for the console input On Manufacturers may label this HDMI UHD Color, Ultra Deep Color, Smart HDR or a similar input-bandwidth setting.
Dynamic Tone Mapping Off initially Start with a controlled tone-mapping path; recalibrate if you later change this setting.
HGiG On when supported, after disabling Dynamic Tone Mapping HGiG can hand tone-mapping control to the game and console. It is a starting point, not a universal guarantee for every panel.
AI, Smart, Dynamic and Adaptive enhancements Off Automatic contrast, sharpening, noise reduction and similar processing can alter the intended image and add latency.
Motion interpolation Off for the normal gaming profile Interpolation invents intermediate frames, can change the game’s appearance and may increase delay or create artifacts.
Brightness, contrast, colour and local dimming Leave at the display’s calibrated defaults until console HDR calibration is complete There is no single numeric value that is correct for every TV, monitor, panel type, room or firmware version.

After this baseline is active, run the HDR calibration on the console. Only then make small room- or panel-specific adjustments. If you change the preset, HGiG, Dynamic Tone Mapping or another major HDR control, repeat the calibration because the display’s luminance response has changed.

How do I set up HDR on PS5 for GTA 6?

On PS5, select On When Supported rather than forcing HDR over every game and app, then use Adjust HDR to complete the console calibration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Choose Screen and Video, then Video Output.
  3. Open HDR and select On When Supported. This allows HDR titles to use HDR while leaving non-HDR content in SDR. Always On makes the console convert SDR content to HDR and is a deliberate preference, not a requirement for GTA 6.
  4. Select Adjust HDR and follow each on-screen pattern. Set the symbol until the console’s instructions indicate the correct level; do not substitute a television’s generic demo image for this process.
  5. Return to the video-output information screen and confirm that the PS5 reports the intended resolution and HDR state for the connected display.
  6. If your display and the game support a compatible variable-refresh output, enable VRR as a compatibility option. Treat that as a capability check, not evidence of a GTA 6 frame-rate target.

Keep the TV or monitor in Game Mode while calibrating. If you later switch to a different picture preset, enable or disable HGiG, or change Dynamic Tone Mapping, run Adjust HDR again. The PS5 menu labels above are Sony’s documented path; firmware revisions can move secondary options without changing the purpose of the controls.

How do I calibrate HDR on Xbox Series X|S?

Use the Xbox display settings and its built-in HDR calibration sequence while the display is already in Game Mode. Xbox menu names can change with system software, so follow the current on-screen prompts instead of relying on an old button-by-button path.

  1. Open the console’s TV & display options.
  2. Check the information panel for the connected display’s supported resolution, HDR capability, refresh rate and VRR availability.
  3. Start the HDR calibration tool from the display or HDR section. Follow each pattern and adjust only the control the prompt identifies.
  4. Keep the display’s HDR input mode enabled and its automatic enhancements disabled while the calibration screens are visible.
  5. Save the result, launch the game and verify that the display switches to its HDR picture mode rather than remaining in SDR.
  6. If you alter HGiG, Dynamic Tone Mapping, Game Mode or another major picture setting, repeat the HDR calibration.

This process calibrates the console-to-display path. It does not establish GTA 6’s final peak-brightness target, paper-white value, black-level control or frame-rate mode; Rockstar has not published those game-specific details.

How can I reduce motion blur and improve motion clarity in GTA 6?

Prioritize low processing, stable frame pacing and an accurate signal. A 120Hz panel or VRR can provide flexibility, but neither feature can create frames that the game does not render.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the gaming preset active

Game Mode normally bypasses television processing that adds delay. Leave motion smoothing, cinematic interpolation, noise reduction, AI sharpening and adaptive contrast disabled in the gaming profile. Those controls may look impressive with video content, but they can change game motion, introduce halos or add latency.

Use 120Hz as preparation, not a performance promise

A 120Hz display can accept a compatible high-refresh signal if the console and game provide one. Rockstar’s currently available official information does not confirm a 120fps or 60fps GTA 6 mode, so buying a 120Hz display should be framed as flexibility for this and other games, not as proof that GTA 6 will output at that rate.

Understand what VRR can and cannot do

Variable refresh rate allows a compatible display to follow changing frame delivery within its supported range, which can reduce visible tearing when the output varies. The active VRR range for GTA 6 on each console has not been published. Enable VRR when the console and display report compatibility, but do not promise a specific range, minimum frame rate or guaranteed smoothness.

Do not use interpolation as a default fix

Television motion interpolation generates estimated intermediate frames. Rockstar’s guidance is to disable picture-enhancement features, and interpolation can conflict with that low-latency goal. If you experiment with a model-specific motion option, keep it in a separate profile, expect possible artifacts, and turn it off if controls feel delayed or moving objects develop halos.

Should I use HGiG or Dynamic Tone Mapping?

Start with Dynamic Tone Mapping disabled and HGiG enabled when the display supports it, then rerun console HDR calibration. This gives you a controlled baseline; it is not a universal verdict for every panel.

Dynamic Tone Mapping continuously remaps highlights to fit the display. That can make an image look brighter, but it also changes the relationship between the game’s signal and the panel’s output. HGiG is intended for compatible gaming displays that can follow the game-and-console tone-mapping instructions more directly. Because implementation differs by model and firmware, record your original setting before changing it and compare only after recalibrating.

If HGiG makes the image too dim, clips detail or is not available, return to the display’s documented HDR mode and use the console calibration again. Do not compensate by publishing a universal brightness or contrast number: peak luminance, black-level behaviour, local dimming and room light vary too widely between models.

Do I need an HDMI 2.1 cable for GTA 6?

Use a direct HDMI 2.1-capable connection when your desired signal path requires that bandwidth, such as a 4K high-refresh or VRR configuration supported by the console and display. Connect the console directly to the TV or monitor first, then add an audio receiver or switch only if it also supports the required signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable supports the connection’s bandwidth; it cannot increase the game’s rendered frame rate, unlock an unannounced performance mode or improve HDR beyond what the console and display can produce. If a direct connection works but an intermediary device does not pass HDR, 120Hz or VRR, check that device’s documented HDMI capabilities before changing picture settings.

What should I look for in a TV or monitor for GTA 6?

Choose by capability and viewing environment rather than by a brand label or an unverified “GTA 6” claim. The relevant differences are HDR control, signal bandwidth, latency and how the screen fits your room.

Buying axis Questions to ask Why it matters
HDR behaviour How bright is the panel, how well are black levels controlled, and is local dimming available? Does it offer HGiG or a comparable gaming tone-mapping mode? These determine highlight detail, shadow visibility and whether the console calibration behaves predictably.
Signal support Does the input accept 4K, HDR, HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, VRR and 120Hz? The console can use only the features supported by every link in the chain.
Latency What does the manufacturer specify for Game Mode, and does the display support automatic low-latency switching? Low processing is more useful for control response than a high refresh number by itself.
Room and seating What screen size fits the viewing distance? How much ambient light and reflection reaches the panel? A large glossy screen can be difficult in a bright room, while a smaller monitor may be easier to place close to a desk.
Native motion behaviour How does the panel respond without interpolation, and can all enhancement features be disabled? Accurate native response avoids adding artificial frames or processing to solve a problem the game may not have.

No single TV or monitor can be ranked as the universal best without model-specific measurements. Rockstar’s official guidance supports these capability-based criteria, not a one-size-fits-all model recommendation.

What GTA 6 display details are confirmed?

Rockstar says Grand Theft Auto VI is being released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. Its currently available official material does not state a launch frame-rate mode, VRR operating range, HDR format, peak-brightness target or exact in-game HDR values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters when shopping. A display can be fully equipped for 4K HDR, 120Hz and VRR while the game itself remains capped to a different mode. Use those specifications to preserve options across the console generation, not to claim a result Rockstar has not announced.

What should I check if HDR looks wrong or motion feels sluggish?

Work through the signal path in order. Changing several controls at once makes it difficult to identify whether the console, cable, display preset or calibration caused the problem.

  • The image is washed out or remains in SDR: confirm HDR is enabled for the exact HDMI input, verify the console reports HDR capability, and check that the display has not switched to a non-HDR picture preset.
  • Highlights are clipped: disable Dynamic Tone Mapping, enable HGiG if supported, and rerun the console HDR calibration. If the result is still clipped, return to the display’s documented HDR mode rather than raising contrast blindly.
  • The image is too dark: check that HGiG was not enabled without recalibration, confirm the room lighting has not changed dramatically, and repeat the console calibration after restoring the intended HDR preset.
  • Controls feel delayed: select Game Mode, disable interpolation and other enhancements, and test the console directly on the display rather than through an intermediary device.
  • 120Hz or VRR is unavailable: verify that the display input, cable and any receiver or switch support the required mode. Then check the console’s reported output information; do not infer GTA 6 support from the panel’s specification alone.
  • Motion tears or judders: enable VRR only when the console and display identify a compatible mode. VRR cannot correct a game mode that falls outside the display’s operating range, and GTA 6’s range has not been published.
  • Settings keep changing: disable automatic picture modes and confirm that the display is not applying a separate HDR or console input profile. Save a dedicated gaming profile if the model supports one.

How should I maintain the setup after launch?

Keep a note of the display preset, HGiG state, Dynamic Tone Mapping state and console HDR calibration date. Recheck the console’s video-output information after a system or display firmware update, after moving the console to another HDMI input, or after inserting a receiver or switch into the path.

When Rockstar publishes final information about GTA 6’s frame-rate modes, HDR controls or VRR behaviour, compare those documented values with your current profile. Until then, the reliable approach is to preserve an accurate, low-latency HDR path and avoid claims based solely on a 120Hz label.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an older HDR TV still work with GTA 6?

If it accepts the console’s supported resolution and HDR signal, it can be used with the baseline settings. You may miss newer options such as HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, 120Hz or VRR, but those features are not confirmed requirements for the game.

Does VRR remove all judder in GTA 6?

No. VRR operates only within the range supported by the display, console and game output. Rockstar has not published GTA 6’s active VRR range, so VRR should be treated as compatibility headroom rather than a guarantee of perfect motion.

When should I repeat the console HDR calibration?

Repeat it after changing Game Mode, HGiG, Dynamic Tone Mapping or another major HDR preset, and after moving the console to a different display input. Firmware updates that alter HDR behaviour are another reason to run the calibration again.

Can an HDMI 2.1 cable make GTA 6 run at 120fps?

No. The cable can carry a compatible high-bandwidth signal, but it cannot create frames or unlock a performance mode that Rockstar has not provided. GTA 6’s final frame-rate options remain unconfirmed.
