For GTA 6, RAGE is the answer: the game is not made in Unreal Engine 5. For a developer choosing an engine they can actually license, Unreal Engine 5.6—with Chaos Physics and World Partition—is the practical option. RAGE is Rockstar’s proprietary technology, and its current systems are not publicly documented. The real comparison is therefore between Rockstar’s integrated, studio-only approach and Epic’s configurable toolkit—not two engines available on equal terms.

Is GTA 6 made in Unreal Engine 5?

No. GTA 6 runs on Rockstar’s proprietary RAGE engine, not Unreal Engine 5. Rockstar lists the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of 19 November 2026. That date is still in the future as of October 2026, so claims about the finished game’s physics should be distinguished from what Rockstar has confirmed or what footage appears to show.

The visual similarity to a modern Unreal game is not evidence of Unreal technology. RAGE has evolved across Rockstar releases, and Rockstar has not published a GTA 6 technical specification identifying every subsystem. In particular, there is no public GTA 6 physics white paper, solver timestep, or like-for-like performance benchmark against Chaos.

What is the difference between RAGE and Unreal Engine 5?

RAGE is a private engine and production pipeline made for Rockstar’s games; Unreal Engine 5 is a commercial toolkit that other studios can adopt. That difference shapes everything from how much technical information is available to whether an outside developer can use the engine at all.

What does RAGE do for GTA 6’s physics?

RAGE’s value is not one publicly specified physics feature; it is the way Rockstar combines simulation, animation, AI, and world streaming for its particular kind of open world. Its history helps explain the design, but it does not let anyone outside Rockstar verify the exact GTA 6 implementation.

RAGE’s history and the Euphoria connection

RAGE stands for Rockstar Advanced Game Engine. Rockstar’s first game built on it was Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis, released for Xbox 360 on 23 May 2006. The engine traces back to Angel Game Engine technology and has been developed by Rockstar’s RAGE Technology Group at Rockstar San Diego. Rockstar moved toward in-house technology after Electronic Arts acquired Criterion and its RenderWare technology in 2004.

Historically, RAGE titles have used Bullet for rigid bodies and Euphoria for character movement and reactions. Euphoria, made by NaturalMotion, uses Dynamic Motion Synthesis: rather than playing only a fixed animation, it can synthesize a response using a simulated character’s body, muscles, and motor system. Rockstar used it in GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption, GTA V, and Red Dead Redemption 2. NaturalMotion ended third-party Euphoria licensing in 2017, and Euphoria is integrated into Rockstar’s technology. That history is a reason not to assume another studio can simply reproduce Rockstar’s setup by selecting a plug-in.

These are historical and lineage facts, not a public GTA 6 subsystem list. Rockstar has not announced an official engine version called “RAGE 9” or a GTA 6 product called “Euphoria 2.0.” Those labels are community shorthand or speculation, not confirmed names.

Why a busy city is a physics problem

In a dense city, the hard part is not merely calculating a convincing collision. The game must decide which pedestrians, vehicles, animations, AI behaviors, and physical interactions deserve CPU time nearby—and what can be simplified or unloaded farther away. The more systems that remain active at once, the less capacity remains for everything else.

Wikipedia’s 2026 technology summary reports more than 600,000 unique NPC animations in GTA 6, compared with 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2 and 55,000 in Grand Theft Auto V. It also reports that different NPC heights led Rockstar to use runtime animation retargeting rather than duplicate animation sets, saving console memory, and that the density of NPCs plus associated AI and animation simulation heavily taxes the Zen 2 CPU cores in the ninth-generation consoles. Those figures underline the scale of the simulation challenge; they do not disclose a body count or physics performance benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same technology summary says Rockstar Los Angeles was founded in 2023 for NPC development and describes NPCs as handcrafted, with personalities shaped by their district, what they have seen, and how the player has treated them. Rockstar’s Rob Nelson said the projected number of NPCs needed to populate Leonida was “horrifying,” and that interaction goes further than in Red Dead Redemption 2. These are examples of the content and behavior RAGE must support, not proof that every NPC is running full physics at every moment.

What trailers show—and what they do not

Official footage shows detailed water, wakes, splashes, wet skin, hair, clothing, vehicle deformation, and reactions to impacts. Digital Foundry’s 2 September 2026 analysis described strand-based hair as a major visual step forward and reported extensive ray-traced global illumination, alongside variable-penumbra shadow maps rather than fully ray-traced sun shadows. Those are observations of footage, not a published account of Rockstar’s physics solvers.

Rockstar has confirmed dynamic weather. Its weather system has been described by Owen Shepherd, Rockstar’s vice president of art for lighting and rendering, as more localized and persistent. The 2026 technology summary attributes to the system seasonal hurricanes and tropical storms, reduced visibility, prominent winds, persistent puddles, rooftop runoff, and rainbows. A 2023 technical report credited to RAGE Technology Group has been cited by secondary explainers as evidence of physically simulated water, but Rockstar has not published the solver or confirmed a specific implementation. Surfing as a playable activity is also unconfirmed.

Vehicle deformation is visible in trailers, but claims about its exact polygon budget or underlying method have not been independently established in a published physics paper. Likewise, footage showing hair and clothing movement does not identify a cloth or hair solver. A further caveat from Digital Foundry’s footage analysis is a movement-update judder that does not lock-step with frame rate, an animation-pipeline artifact also seen in earlier RAGE games. It is a reminder that realistic-looking motion and perfectly smooth motion are not the same claim.

How does Chaos Physics handle open-world simulation?

Chaos is Unreal Engine’s documented physics system, with features for rigid bodies, vehicles, ragdolls, cloth, fluids, hair, flesh, destruction, and networked physics. Its tools give developers more public documentation and authoring control than Rockstar provides for RAGE, but they do not make every object in a large world cheap to simulate.

Characters, cloth, and vehicles

Chaos ragdolls simulate rigid bodies attached to a skeletal mesh. Unreal also provides a Physics Asset Editor and Rigid Body Animation Nodes for blending simulation with animation, including secondary motion. That can support convincing reactions, but achieving an active, self-correcting character response like Euphoria’s synthesis is a design and engineering task—not an automatic result of enabling ragdoll physics.

Chaos Cloth supports wind, animation drive, exposed Blueprint parameters, and machine-learning cloth simulation. The documented examples include clothing responding differently underwater. Unreal’s 5.6 feature list also includes hair and flesh simulation, though the specific solver details belong to their individual documentation and should not be guessed from the feature names.

Chaos Vehicles can support arbitrary numbers of wheels and gears, aerofoil surfaces for uplift or downforce, and thrust forces. Developers can change or disable wheel friction and engine behavior during simulation. Unreal’s asynchronous physics mode is intended to provide more deterministic results. Those are flexible building blocks; they do not dictate whether a shipped game’s handling feels like a driving simulator or an arcade crime sandbox.

Destruction is a strength, not a whole-city answer

Chaos Destruction is designed for authored, interactive breakage. Geometry Collections can combine one or more static meshes, including meshes nested in Blueprints, and fracture them into multiple levels. Artists can set damage thresholds per cluster and use Connection Graphs to represent structural integrity. World Support can keep a building’s kinematic parts from sliding as one object; cached destruction can be replayed while remaining interactive; Niagara can respond to break and collision events; and Physics Fields can apply forces, break clusters, or anchor bodies in a region.

That makes Chaos a strong fit when a game needs selected buildings or props to fracture in a controlled, cinematic way. It does not mean an entire city can be destructible at no cost. GTA 6’s visible emphasis is on traffic, pedestrians, vehicles, water, hair, and prop response—not on collapsing city blocks as a central gameplay system.

Epic’s 2024 Unreal Fest presentation on large-scale, high-fidelity Chaos scenes described Fortnite-scale networked destruction, from small objects to dynamic buildings, using server-authoritative connectivity graphs so the server tracks object connectivity. It demonstrates that Chaos can support ambitious multiplayer destruction when the project is engineered for it; it is not a direct performance comparison with Leonida.

Networked physics

Unreal Engine 5.6 documents three replication modes for physics-driven multiplayer simulations: Default, the legacy mode; Predictive Interpolation, which remains server-authoritative while improving local predictive interactions; and Resimulation, in which clients predict physics and resimulate when the server state diverges enough. Those capabilities matter to developers building multiplayer physics toys. GTA 6 is a single-player action-adventure at launch, so this is an engine distinction rather than a reason to expect a particular feature in the game’s launch build.

How do RAGE and World Partition keep a large map running?

World Partition is Epic’s documented system for automatic, distance-based level streaming. RAGE has private systems for the same broad job, but Rockstar has not published their design; no public evidence supports a detailed cell-by-cell RAGE comparison with Unreal.

In Unreal Engine 5.6, World Partition stores a world in one persistent level and divides it into grid cells. It loads and unloads cells based on distance from streaming sources, which default to Player Controllers but can include Streaming Source components for cases such as teleports. The Open World default map combines World Partition with One File Per Actor, Data Layers, and Hierarchical LODs, and includes a sample landscape measuring 2 km by 2 km.

Epic’s documentation gives an example runtime grid with 256-metre cells and a 768-metre loading radius around a streaming source. Those are example settings, not requirements or a recommended recipe for every game. Epic warns that using more than one 2D runtime hash grid can hurt performance and points developers to City Sample’s “Big City” map for setup guidance.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Streaming also has to work with collision. Epic’s September 2025 Chaos performance guidance says large open-world games should remove collision from distant World Partition HLODs. In the City Sample, only the first HLOD level includes collision; higher levels instance or merge render meshes without it. A distant building can remain visible without being a fully interactive physics object. That is the same practical constraint facing any large-world engine: presentation range and simulation range cannot be treated as identical.

For both RAGE and Unreal, broad principles such as spatial partitioning, AI levels of detail, and limiting active physics are part of the engineering problem. The key distinction is that Rockstar controls its own streaming and simulation rules, while Unreal developers configure documented systems and make their own trade-offs. A wanted-level system that reduces civilian variety as police pressure increases, for example, can also act as a way to manage simulation demand—but that is a design approach, not a published technical specification of GTA 6.

Which engine is better for each kind of open-world physics?

Neither engine is better in every job. RAGE is the stronger fit for Rockstar’s integrated city simulation and character-reaction style; Chaos is the more accessible and documented toolkit for studios that need authorable destruction, configurable physics, or multiplayer replication.

Development goal Better fit Why
Build a GTA-like city as an outside studio Unreal Engine 5 RAGE is not externally licensed; Unreal provides a usable, documented large-world toolset
Make pedestrians react differently to impacts RAGE as Rockstar has historically used it; Chaos if you are building your own system Euphoria synthesizes character reactions; Chaos provides ragdolls and physical animation, but does not automatically reproduce Euphoria behavior
Simulate dense traffic and ambient city life RAGE for Rockstar’s particular pipeline Rockstar’s streaming, AI, animation, and physics systems are integrated for its own games; comparable RAGE internals are not public
Create a destructible building or interactive debris scene Chaos Geometry Collections, Connection Graphs, thresholds, and Physics Fields are documented for this work
Choose vehicle behavior and physics features directly Chaos for configurable authoring; RAGE for Rockstar’s established GTA handling Chaos Vehicles exposes wheels, gears, aerofoils, thrust, and related controls; Rockstar’s handling is tuned for its games
Build a large map with public streaming guidance Unreal Engine 5 World Partition documents cells, loading sources, HLODs, and collision trade-offs; RAGE’s corresponding systems are private

Why didn’t Rockstar just use Unreal Engine 5?

Rockstar already owns a technology stack shaped by two decades of open-world production, and it can control the streaming, animation, and simulation systems that matter to its games. Moving to a general-purpose engine would mean adapting that pipeline rather than simply gaining a better physics solver. RAGE is not available to competitors, but its studio-specific integration is precisely why Rockstar can keep building on it.

Rockstar leaders Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut have said the technology developed for GTA 6 should lay groundwork for future titles and help reduce time between games. That is an argument for carrying forward tools and expertise—not evidence that RAGE is the right choice for other studios. The trade-offs of a private engine include less public tooling, fewer outside developers who know its workflows, and challenges such as slower ports or limited official mod support.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in remarks reported around the company’s February 2026 results that generative AI has “zero part” in what Rockstar is building for GTA 6, describing the worlds as handcrafted “building by building, street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood.” That reinforces the importance of production methods and authored content to the result: engine features alone do not account for a city’s detail.

Can you make a GTA-like game in Unreal Engine 5?

Yes, but the practical goal is to recreate selected design principles, not to copy RAGE or simulate an entire city at full fidelity. Unreal gives a small or large studio tools it can adopt; the team still has to decide what is active, what streams in, and which interactions receive the available CPU and memory budget.

  1. Start with the playable area and streaming plan. Use World Partition for a large map, define streaming sources and cell behavior, then test the map with the intended travel speeds and teleport scenarios. Treat Epic’s 256-metre cell and 768-metre loading radius as an example, not a universal setting.
  2. Pick a deliberate collision range. Decide which nearby objects need physical collision and remove it from distant visual representations where appropriate. Epic’s City Sample approach—collision on the first HLOD level but not higher ones—is one documented example.
  3. Limit the number of active simulations. Keep full AI, animation, and collision for the interactions that matter to the player. Use lower-cost behavior or visual representations for distant actors rather than treating every pedestrian and vehicle as equally important.
  4. Build one convincing character-reaction loop. Combine animation with ragdoll or physical animation, then tune the transition and recovery behavior. Chaos supplies useful components, but the distinctive feeling comes from how a team authors and connects them.
  5. Match destruction to the game’s core activity. Use Geometry Collections, fracture thresholds, and Connection Graphs for structures the player is expected to break. Avoid assuming that spectacular destruction in a contained scene will scale unchanged to a busy city.
  6. Profile the whole scene, not only the solver. Traffic, AI, animation, streaming, rendering, and physics compete for resources. A test with one destructible building cannot establish how a dense city will perform.

The right reference is RAGE’s approach to prioritization: preserve the interactions that define the game and simplify what the player cannot meaningfully perceive. Do not expect to obtain RAGE itself, and do not mistake a Chaos feature demo for a finished open-world simulation.

What can we conclude before GTA 6 launches?

GTA 6 is confirmed to use RAGE and is scheduled for 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has confirmed 30 FPS on both consoles at launch, according to the 2026 technology summary citing an August Rockstar confirmation. That frame-rate figure is a console launch specification, not a published physics timestep or a statement about a future PC release.

Until the game ships, the exact cost and behavior of its physics systems remain unpublished. There is no public RAGE-versus-Chaos benchmark using identical scenes, active-body counts, vehicle pile-ups, water workloads, or destruction tests. For GTA 6, RAGE is the engine; for a studio choosing an engine to build its own open world, Unreal Engine 5.6 is the adoptable option, with Chaos and World Partition tools that still require careful budgets and design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will GTA 6 be available on PC at launch?

As of October 2026, no Windows release is scheduled. Rockstar has announced the 19 November 2026 launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; a later PC release should not be assumed without an announcement.

Are Leonida and GTA 6’s NPCs procedurally generated?

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick described the game’s worlds as handcrafted, built street by street and neighborhood by neighborhood. That statement is about world creation; it does not establish that every small variation or simulation behavior is authored individually.

Does GTA 6 running at 30 FPS mean its physics update at 30 Hz?

No such update rate has been published. A render-frame target alone does not disclose the physics timestep, how many simulation substeps run per frame, or whether physics runs asynchronously.
