To adjust GTA 5’s settings, open the Pause Menu and choose Settings, then check the Audio and Display categories. The exact subtitle switch and any dialogue-volume control can vary by edition; Rockstar’s published settings guidance does not confirm one universal submenu or a dedicated dialogue slider. For language, the key distinction is that Rockstar lists English as the only full-audio language: changing the displayed text does not add dubbed voices.
This guide separates three things that are often mixed together: whether subtitles appear, what language the game displays, and what language characters speak. It also explains which language steps apply to each current console or PC launcher, and what to check when sound is missing rather than merely quiet. These are settings changes; you do not need to buy a different copy of GTA V or an accessory to change the game’s displayed language.

Start in Pause Menu > Settings and inspect the Audio and Display options available in your copy of the game. Rockstar confirms those categories as the settings starting point in Story Mode and GTA Online. Its April 20, 2024 article, Adjusting settings within GTAV, says, “The settings for GTAV can be changed within the Pause Menu when in Story Mode or Online.” That establishes where to begin, but it does not identify one exact subtitle-toggle path for every edition.
In the settings, distinguish between three things:
- Subtitle visibility: whether on-screen captions are shown.
- Displayed language: the language used for interface text and supported subtitles.
- Spoken dialogue: the voice audio heard in the game.
These are related but not interchangeable. Rockstar lists a range of subtitle and interface languages, but English alone under Full Audio. Its language-selection instructions describe changing the game’s language; they do not establish that every edition offers a separate subtitles-only language selector. Do not assume that changing one text setting will change voices, or that the interface and subtitles can always be selected independently.

If you want captions on or off, look through the Audio and Display categories in the edition you are playing and use the option actually shown there. If you do not see a subtitle control where expected, check the settings available for your platform and edition rather than following an unverified button sequence from another version. The official settings guidance reviewed here does not name a universal subtitle submenu, so a precise path should not be promised across all platforms.
It also helps to identify the problem before changing anything. If you can hear characters but cannot read captions, you are looking for a subtitle-visibility or displayed-text setting. If the captions are visible but in the wrong language, use the appropriate platform or launcher language procedure below. If you want characters to speak another language, the supported full-audio list is the deciding information: GTA V lists English only for full audio.

Can I change GTA 5’s spoken voices to another language?
No supported language other than English is listed for full audio. Rockstar’s support entry, updated January 7, 2025, covers PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It lists English under Full Audio, while offering additional choices for interface text and subtitles. Selecting another language for the displayed text does not install or activate a different official voice dub.
The supported interface and subtitle languages listed by Rockstar are English, French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain), Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish (Latin America), and Traditional Chinese. PlayStation’s support table independently identifies English for voice audio and additional languages for text. In practical terms, the language choices divide into spoken sound and displayed text: the text list is broader, while the listed full-audio choice is English.
This distinction applies whether you are in Story Mode or GTA Online. Rockstar confirms that settings can be accessed from the Pause Menu in both modes, but that does not mean Online has a separate language dub or voice-language setting. Nor does changing the console or launcher language create a new spoken track. A headset, speaker change, or volume adjustment can affect how you hear the audio, but cannot add a language that is not listed for full audio.
Rockstar’s language list describes supported options for the game overall; it does not guarantee that every listed language will appear in every platform selector or configuration. Check the choices presented on your own system or launcher. If a language you expect is absent, first confirm that you are using the correct platform-specific procedure rather than inferring that another device’s selector applies to yours.

How do I change the displayed language on console?
On PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One, GTA V uses the console’s system language for its in-game language. Change the console language in its System Settings, then start or return to the game to check the result. Rockstar does not provide one console-menu button path that applies across all four systems, so use the system settings for the specific console rather than following instructions for a different model.
If the selected console language is not supported, Rockstar says the game prompts you to choose a language when it starts. Select from the options the game presents. That startup prompt is not evidence of a separate subtitle-only setting, and it does not change the supported full-audio language. If your goal is text in another language, the game’s displayed-language choice is the relevant setting; if your goal is another spoken voice language, the supported-audio list remains English only.
The procedure is different on older consoles. For Xbox 360, Rockstar documents holding LB + RB while booting the game. On PS3, it documents holding L1 + R1 while booting. Rockstar also describes clearing game data as an alternative on PS3. Game data and save data are not the same: do not delete save data when following that alternative. These legacy-console steps should not be applied to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S.
How do I change the language on PC?
The steps depend on which launcher installed GTA V. Steam uses a language utility in the game’s installation folder; Rockstar Games Launcher uses its own Settings page; Epic Games Launcher uses a language choice in its Library settings. Choose the procedure that matches your launcher, not merely the PC brand or the fact that the game runs on Windows. All of these procedures concern the displayed game language; they do not provide a non-English full-audio option.
Steam
- Find the folder where GTA V is installed. Rockstar’s listed default location is
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonGrand Theft Auto V. This is only the default path; if you selected another drive or install location, use the actual GTA V folder. - In that folder, run
GTAVLanguageSelect.exe. - Choose a supported language in Rockstar’s language switcher.
- Select Update and Close to finish without launching immediately, or Update and Run to update the selection and start the game.
A common mistake is searching only the listed default folder even though the game was installed elsewhere. The utility is associated with the GTA V installation, so locate the correct folder first. If you use another launcher, do not assume that the Steam utility or Steam’s default path is the right method for it.
Rockstar Games Launcher
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher and go to Settings > General > Language.
- Choose the preferred language.
- Select Games, then launch GTA V.
This is the documented Rockstar Games Launcher procedure. It is not the same as running Steam’s language-selector executable. If the game does not appear to use the language you selected, confirm that the launcher you changed is the one used for your installation and then launch the game through it.

Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher and go to Library > Settings.
- Choose the preferred language from the drop-down menu.
- Launch GTA V.
Epic’s documented steps use the launcher’s Library settings, not the Rockstar Games Launcher’s General page or Steam’s installation-folder utility. These procedures are not interchangeable, so start with the launcher through which you access the game.
Can I make dialogue louder without turning up everything else?
Open Pause Menu > Settings > Audio and inspect the controls your edition actually provides. If there are separate controls for voices and other sounds, adjust them there; Rockstar’s published settings article does not confirm a dedicated Dialogue Volume or Dialogue Boost slider across editions, so do not expect that exact control to appear in every copy.
If your edition shows a voice-specific control, it may let you change speech relative to other audio; use the labels and options actually present in your settings. If there is no separate voice control, the reviewed official guidance does not establish a universal in-game way to raise dialogue independently of other sounds. Avoid changing unrelated settings on the assumption that they control speech, and do not search for a made-up universal path such as Audio > Dialogue Volume.
First determine whether speech is simply quieter than the music or effects, or whether dialogue is absent altogether. For audio that is present but unbalanced, inspect the edition’s Audio settings and adjust only the relevant controls that are available. The official guidance does not promise that every edition has the same mix controls. If a scene or cutscene has no sound at all on GTA V Enhanced for PC, move to the device and configuration checks below; that problem may not be a language or volume-setting issue.
What should I check if dialogue or cutscene sound is missing on PC?
For GTA V Enhanced on PC, Rockstar’s audio troubleshooting guidance identifies sound-device support, driver support and updates, and speaker configuration as checks for missing audio. Treat this as a different problem from a voice track that is present but quiet. A language change is not the first diagnostic step when cutscene or other game sound is missing.
- Confirm the sound device. Check that the device selected for audio is supported and is the device you intend the game to use. A game output routed to the wrong device can make sound seem absent from the speakers or headset you are listening to.
- Check driver support and updates. Rockstar calls out both whether the device’s driver is supported and whether an update is available. This is a device and driver check, not an instruction to install third-party repair software.
- Match speaker configuration to the physical setup. Verify that the computer’s configuration reflects the speakers actually connected. Rockstar’s example is not to configure Windows for 5.1 surround sound when the physical setup is stereo.
Work through those checks when sound is missing, especially in cutscenes or other parts of GTA V Enhanced. They are not a guaranteed fix for every sound issue, and Rockstar’s cited troubleshooting guidance does not claim that they cure dialogue that is merely quieter than music or effects. If audio is present but out of balance, return to the Audio controls actually available in your edition. Do not treat a PC device fix as a universal console solution, either; the cited device and Windows speaker example is specifically relevant to Enhanced on PC.

Which method should I use?
The quickest way to choose the correct route is to identify both the symptom and the platform:
- Captions missing or unwanted: open the Pause Menu, choose Settings, and inspect Audio and Display for the subtitle option present in your edition. The official article does not confirm an exact universal submenu.
- Text in the wrong language on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, or Xbox One: change the console’s system language. If unsupported, the game can prompt for a selection at startup.
- Text in the wrong language on PC: use the procedure for Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher, or Epic Games Launcher, depending on the installation.
- Text in the wrong language on Xbox 360 or PS3: use Rockstar’s documented legacy-console startup method; on PS3, take care to distinguish game data from save data.
- Voices in a language other than English: Rockstar lists English alone for full audio, so the displayed-language procedures will not provide a different official dub.
- Speech present but relatively quiet: inspect the Audio controls available in your edition; do not assume a dedicated dialogue slider.
- Cutscene or other sound absent in Enhanced on PC: check the output device, driver support and updates, and speaker configuration.
Changing the game’s displayed language or checking its settings is a free settings task; none of the documented procedures requires purchasing a replacement copy, a headset, or third-party software. A listening accessory may be useful for personal comfort or audio playback, but it is not a way to add voice languages or create a missing in-game control.

Does changing GTA 5’s language change the dialogue in GTA Online too?
Rockstar lists English alone for full audio; its additional language choices cover displayed text and subtitles. The Pause Menu settings route is available in both Story Mode and GTA Online, but that does not indicate that a different voice language is available online.
Why does GTA 5 ask me to choose a language when it starts?
Rockstar says this can happen when a console’s system language is not supported. Choose from the options the game presents, or change the system language on supported current consoles. A startup prompt does not add another spoken voice language.

Will a headset add Spanish voice acting to GTA 5?
No. A headset can change how you listen, but it cannot add a voice track that the game does not list as supported. Rockstar lists English alone for full audio.
Can I set subtitles to Spanish but keep the interface in English?
Rockstar lists Spanish among supported interface and subtitle languages, but its reviewed platform instructions do not confirm an independent subtitles-only language selector for every edition. Check the options shown in your copy rather than assuming the two can always be set separately.

Where is the subtitle toggle in GTA 5?
Begin at Pause Menu > Settings and inspect the Audio and Display categories. Rockstar’s settings guidance confirms those categories as the starting point but does not identify one exact subtitle-toggle submenu that applies to every edition.
Why is GTA 5 dialogue so quiet?
Inspect the Audio settings available in your edition. Rockstar’s published settings guidance does not confirm a dedicated dialogue-volume or dialogue-boost control across editions. If dialogue is absent rather than quiet in GTA V Enhanced on PC, check the audio device, driver support and updates, and speaker configuration.
Can I turn up voices without turning up the radio or effects?
Only if your edition actually provides separate controls for those sounds. Check the available Audio controls; do not assume every version has a voice-specific slider or a universal dialogue-boost setting.
Which PC language instructions should I follow?
Use the method for the launcher that installed the game: run GTAVLanguageSelect.exe in the installation folder for Steam, use Settings > General > Language in Rockstar Games Launcher, or use Library > Settings in Epic Games Launcher.
Is the Steam folder path the same for every PC installation?
No. Rockstar’s listed default is C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonGrand Theft Auto V, but the actual installation folder can differ. Locate your own GTA V folder before running GTAVLanguageSelect.exe.
Can I use the Xbox 360 or PS3 startup buttons on a newer console?
Those startup combinations are Rockstar’s documented methods for Xbox 360 and PS3 only: LB + RB on Xbox 360 and L1 + R1 on PS3. Current console language changes use the console system language instead.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If I clear PS3 game data, will my save be deleted?
Rockstar’s alternative refers to clearing game data, not save data. Do not delete save data when following the PS3 language procedure.
Does the 5.1 setting matter if I use stereo speakers on PC?
It can matter when sound is missing in GTA V Enhanced on PC. Rockstar specifically advises matching the computer’s speaker configuration to the physical setup and gives stereo speakers configured as 5.1 as an example to avoid.
The Bottom Line
Start in Pause Menu > Settings and check the Audio and Display categories for the controls your edition actually provides. For displayed-language changes, use the system-language procedure on current consoles or the correct launcher steps on PC. Rockstar lists English as the only full-audio language, and its published settings guidance does not verify a universal subtitle submenu or dialogue-volume slider. If sound is missing in GTA V Enhanced on PC, check the device, driver, and speaker configuration before treating it as a language problem.
