For a long-book adaptation, Claude is the strongest first choice when your manuscript is in EPUB, PDF, or DOCX and you want to map the source in one working context. ChatGPT is a capable option for a staged, chapter-by-chapter process, while Grok 4.7 offers a large context window and useful exploratory potential—but its reviewed documentation is less explicit about ebook file formats. None of these context limits guarantees a faithful or high-quality adaptation. A continuity bible, bounded drafting, and human editorial checks matter more than feeding a whole book into one prompt.

Which AI should you use to adapt a long book?

Choose based on the job you need the assistant to do, not just the largest number on a context-window chart. For reading and mapping a complete manuscript in a single session, Claude has the clearest combination of a documented 1-million-token context window and explicit EPUB support. ChatGPT has an unusually high per-file text and document upload cap, but its published chat context tiers are smaller; it is a better fit for organizing and revising a book in stages. Grok 4.7 sits between them on stated context size at 500,000 tokens, and can be attractive for brainstorming or API-based workflows, though xAI’s reviewed documentation does not provide an equally detailed ebook-format list.

These are workflow recommendations based on current official documentation, not the result of a controlled comparison in which the three models adapted the same book. Output quality can change with the prompt, genre, manuscript condition, chosen output format, model, and plan. Treat the assistant as a drafting and analysis tool, not as an editor that can verify its own interpretation of a novel.

At a glance

Service Best fit for a book adaptation Published context or file limit Format and workflow notes
Claude Whole-manuscript mapping and EPUB-first workflows Anthropic lists context windows up to 1M tokens for many current models; upload limit is 30MB per file and 20 files per chat. Anthropic explicitly lists EPUB, PDF, DOCX, and several other formats. Project knowledge bases can contain unlimited files subject to the context window.
ChatGPT Structured, staged work in Projects with chapter files and repeated revision OpenAI documents a 2-million-token cap per text or document file. Published total-context tiers vary by model and plan, reaching 400K for Pro reasoning models. DOCX, PDF, and TXT are among supported formats. Projects have plan-dependent file counts.
Grok 4.7 Large-context brainstorming, alternate pitches, and API workflows xAI lists a 500K-token context window and configurable reasoning. xAI documents Files & Collections, Chat with Files, and Collections Search, but the reviewed documentation does not enumerate a comparable EPUB/PDF support matrix.

Each number describes a different kind of limit. A context window is the total space for material considered in a model request, including such things as the conversation, attached documents, tools, and generated output. A per-file upload cap describes how large a document may be accepted; it does not mean the model can actively reason over every token in that file at once. Check the relevant plan and model before committing a full manuscript to a workflow.

Why a large context window does not solve adaptation

Context size answers a capacity question: how much material can fit into a request under a particular model and plan. Adaptation asks a more demanding set of questions. Can the model track who knows what, preserve a character’s development, recognize which scenes depend on earlier events, and distinguish a deliberate ambiguity from a missing explanation? Can it transform those elements into a new medium without flattening voice or inventing connective events? A large context can make more source material available, but it does not settle those editorial decisions.

Anthropic specifically cautions that a larger context window is not automatically better: recall and accuracy can degrade as the amount of context grows, a problem its documentation calls “context rot.” That warning is relevant to any whole-book workflow. If the task requires close attention to one confrontation or a small continuity detail, a short, carefully selected source excerpt may work better than a huge prompt that includes the entire manuscript.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also distinguish a model’s advertised context from the useful size of a production request. The request has to leave room for instructions, notes, the source passage, any conversation history, and the response. If a book nearly fills the context, there may be little room for a detailed adaptation or for the model to explain its choices. A staged workflow is not a workaround for weak technology; it is a way to give each decision enough space and make errors easier to find.

How the three options differ in practice

Claude: the clearest fit for manuscript ingestion

Anthropic’s current documentation lists context windows up to 1M tokens for many current Claude models. Its file-help page explicitly includes EPUB, PDF, DOCX, TXT, HTML, ODT, RTF, JSON, CSV, and XLSX. That combination makes Claude a natural first option when you want to build a map of a manuscript, especially if the source already exists as an EPUB or a clean text document.

For chat uploads, Anthropic specifies a maximum of 30MB per file and up to 20 files per chat. A project knowledge base can contain unlimited files, subject to the context window. These are not interchangeable limits: the per-chat upload count and size still matter when assembling an initial set of files, while a project offers a persistent place to organize source materials. PDFs over 100 pages are text-only outside the multimodal cases Anthropic lists. If your book is a scan, or its meaning depends on page design, illustrations, handwritten annotations, or other visual information, test the document’s legibility and prepare an accessible text version where appropriate.

Claude is most useful as a first-pass manuscript analyst: have it extract characters, chronology, settings, motifs, and unresolved threads, then ask for an adaptation map before requesting scenes. The 1M figure should not be treated as a promise that every book will fit usefully or that the assistant will retain every detail. Even when a manuscript fits, verify important plot and continuity claims against the source.

ChatGPT: a strong choice for organized, iterative adaptation

OpenAI says ChatGPT can work with attached documents and lists DOCX, PDF, and TXT among supported text and document formats. It caps text and document files at 2 million tokens per file. That is a file limit, not a claim that a whole file will remain in one model’s active chat context. Projects provide a place to keep related work together, with the number of files depending on the plan.

OpenAI’s listed total-context tiers distinguish GPT Instant and GPT Reasoning models. On the pricing page checked October 25, 2026, Instant is listed at 27K tokens for Free, 54K for Go and Plus, and 128K for Pro. Reasoning is listed at 256K for Go and Plus, and 400K for Pro. The model and plan you select therefore affect how much source and working material can be handled in a request; do not infer a context size from the 2-million-token upload cap.

That makes ChatGPT a good fit for a chapter-file workflow: store the manuscript and the project’s continuity materials together, produce one adaptation unit at a time, and carry forward a concise set of approved decisions. It is also well suited to tasks such as producing a structured outline, comparing two scene versions, or revising a sequence against a checklist. The key is to make sure each request includes the relevant source and the current approved continuity notes rather than assuming that a project will automatically recall every detail in every answer.

Grok: promising capacity, with format details to confirm

xAI lists Grok 4.7 as its flagship model, with configurable reasoning and a 500K-token context window. Its product documentation describes Files & Collections, Chat with Files, and Collections Search, including a retrieval-augmented search option. Those features can support research and repeated work across a collection of materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reviewed xAI documentation does not publish an EPUB/PDF support matrix as explicit as Anthropic’s format list. Before uploading a book, confirm that the particular Grok interface you plan to use accepts your file type and check how it handles extraction, file size, and retained materials. A large stated context is helpful only if the text gets into the system cleanly and the model can access the right passages when needed.

Grok may be worth considering for alternate adaptation pitches, exploratory brainstorming, or an API workflow where you want to control how requests are assembled. xAI’s API pricing distinguishes short- and long-context rates, so the cost of repeated long prompts needs to be considered separately from a consumer subscription. For an unpublished manuscript, assess the relevant privacy terms as well as the model’s capacity.

Plans, pricing, and API costs

Subscription prices and API token rates are different ways of paying for access. A subscription may impose plan-specific limits or rate limits, while an API workflow charges by token use according to its applicable rates. The figures below are the documented prices available for this comparison, not a guarantee that a particular adaptation workflow will stay within a plan’s usage limits.

Service or plan Documented price Qualification
Claude Free $0 US plan pricing checked October 25, 2026.
Claude Pro $17 per month equivalent with annual billing, or $20 month to month The annual option is $200 billed up front; US pricing checked October 25, 2026.
Claude Max From $100 per month US plan pricing checked October 25, 2026.
ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro Dollar amounts for Go, Plus, and Pro were not stated in the pricing-page capture. Verify the live price and plan limits for your location. The plan page describes expanded uploads, memory, and context for Plus, and maximum memory and context for Pro.
Grok Free $0 per month xAI consumer pricing checked October 25, 2026.
SuperGrok $30 per month xAI consumer pricing checked October 25, 2026; includes Grok 4.6 access and higher rate limits.
Grok 4.7 API, short context $2.00 per 1M input tokens and $6.00 per 1M output tokens xAI API pricing checked October 25, 2026.
Grok 4.7 API, long context $4.00 per 1M input tokens and $12.00 per 1M output tokens xAI API pricing checked October 25, 2026.

Anthropic’s pricing page marks model training as opt-out on the listed Claude plans. That is a meaningful plan-level privacy detail, but it is not a substitute for reviewing the current terms, settings, and data controls that apply to your account and location. The xAI privacy policy, updated October 11, 2026, says user content may be used to provide, analyze, and maintain its service, develop and improve the service, and conduct research. Review the current consumer and API terms separately rather than assuming one interface has the same treatment as another.

For ChatGPT, the available pricing-page information establishes context tiers and plan descriptions, but not a reliable dollar amount for Go, Plus, or Pro here. Check the live page in your region before choosing a plan. The same practical rule applies across services: test your actual manuscript size, desired output length, and expected revision frequency against the account limits before relying on a subscription for a deadline-driven project.

A reliable workflow for turning a book into another format

Whether the destination is a screenplay, series bible, audiobook plan, or synopsis, treat adaptation as a series of explicit editorial decisions. The assistant should identify what the book contains and propose how to transform it; you decide what to retain and approve the resulting work.

  1. Prepare a clean source file. Export the manuscript to EPUB, DOCX, or plain text when possible. Preserve chapter titles, scene breaks, and page references if they matter to later discussion. Remove confusing duplicate drafts and label the version you want adapted. If you work from a PDF, check that its text is selectable and in reading order; a scan may need OCR or a different export before an assistant can analyze it reliably.
  2. Ask for a continuity bible before asking for scenes. Request a structured record of the characters, relationships, chronology, settings, unresolved threads, recurring motifs, and relevant source chapters or pages. Have the model flag uncertainty instead of filling gaps with guesses. Review the bible against the book and correct it; it will become a working reference, not an authoritative replacement for the manuscript.
  3. Specify the destination and constraints. State whether the output is a feature screenplay, episodic outline, series bible, audiobook adaptation plan, or another form. Set the intended audience, tone, approximate length, point of view, and any constraints on invented scenes, changed chronology, or quotations. If those decisions are not made, the model may produce a polished but unsuitable transformation.
  4. Request an adaptation map. Before drafting, ask for a unit-by-unit plan showing what will be retained, merged, reordered, externalized, or cut, with a reason for each consequential change. Ask it to identify plot dependencies and scenes whose removal would require a compensating change elsewhere. Compare the map with your adaptation goals and revise it before proceeding.
  5. Draft in bounded units. Work on a chapter, sequence, or episode at a time. Include the corresponding source material and the relevant approved continuity notes. Ask the assistant to identify the source chapters behind major choices. Bounded drafting makes it easier to notice invented facts, missing motivations, and continuity drift before those errors spread into later units.
  6. Run focused revision passes. Separate continuity, voice, pacing, clarity, and factual checks rather than asking one broad “make it better” question. A continuity pass should compare names, chronology, relationships, and setup against the approved bible. A voice pass should identify where the adaptation sounds generic or unlike the intended work. A pacing pass should explain what a cut or compression does to character and plot.
  7. Review quotations and rights questions. Keep track of language carried over from the source and obtain appropriate legal or rights-holder advice for publication and distribution when needed. An assistant’s ability to transform text does not establish that a particular use is authorized.
  8. Approve each major transformation yourself. Compare the draft with the source, resolve disagreements, and update the continuity bible after approved changes. Do not let an unverified model summary silently become the only record of the book’s events.

How to choose a format and manage context

Use one file or split into chapters?

Start with the simplest clean manuscript format your chosen service supports. If a complete text fits comfortably in the model’s usable context and is ingested accurately, it can be useful for a high-level overview: mapping the arc, identifying recurring motifs, or comparing early setup with the ending. It is not necessary to force a whole-book upload into every task. For drafting or detailed analysis, split the source into chapters or sequences and attach only the material relevant to the current decision, alongside the continuity notes.

Splitting has a cost: a chapter may rely on a clue, promise, or relationship established much earlier. That is why the continuity bible and chapter references are important. A short excerpt without those links may miss the larger story; an entire book without a clear task may dilute attention. The useful middle ground is a bounded source unit plus an accurate, compact map of the broader manuscript.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the book is a PDF or scan

A PDF can contain selectable text, page images, complex layouts, or a mix. The assistant’s ability to accept a PDF does not guarantee clean extraction. For a scanned book, OCR errors can change names, punctuation, or dialogue; inspect the extracted text before relying on it. Anthropic says PDFs over 100 pages are text-only outside its listed multimodal cases, which makes visual interpretation especially important to check. A clean DOCX, EPUB, or plain-text export may preserve the words and chapter structure more reliably, though no format automatically preserves every design feature.

Keep a small, authoritative project packet

As work proceeds, maintain one approved continuity bible, an adaptation map, the current unit draft, and a clear record of decisions that affect later scenes. Label drafts and distinguish approved changes from suggestions. This makes it less likely that a model will use an old version or mistake a brainstorm for a settled story fact. In a service with a project or collection feature, organizing files helps retrieval, but you should still cite the relevant source chapters in prompts and verify the answer against the manuscript.

Privacy and unpublished manuscripts

An unpublished book can contain commercially sensitive work, personal material, or text whose rights you do not control. Before upload, determine which account and service you are using, what its current retention and training settings say, who can access the project, and whether those terms meet your needs. Do not infer privacy treatment from a context limit or subscription tier. Anthropic’s listed plans mark model training as opt-out, while xAI’s policy updated October 11, 2026 describes possible use of user content to provide and improve its service and conduct research. Those statements are reasons to check the current applicable terms, not a complete privacy comparison across every product, plan, or API configuration.

If the manuscript is confidential, contractually restricted, or not yours to upload, get the appropriate permission and review the service terms before submitting any text. You can also test the workflow on a non-sensitive sample first, using the same file format and adaptation instructions, to see whether extraction and output quality are adequate without exposing the complete work.

Common failure modes and how to correct them

The model invents a plot detail

Ask it to support each disputed statement with a chapter or page reference and label uncertain interpretations as uncertain. Check the cited section yourself. Update the continuity bible only after the claim is verified; otherwise an initial hallucination can become a repeated error in later drafts.

A character’s motivation changes between chapters

Compare the draft against the character’s established goals, knowledge, relationships, and turning points. Record approved changes in the continuity bible and include the relevant earlier source chapters when revising a later scene. A character summary that omits what they know at a particular time is not enough to protect chronology.

The adaptation feels like a summary rather than a new work

Define the destination’s dramatic requirements before drafting. A screenplay, episodic series, and audiobook plan make different demands on scene structure and exposition. Ask for a scene or episode map that explains where conflict is staged, how information reaches the audience, and what is being compressed. Then review those choices as adaptation decisions instead of accepting a prose condensation with new headings.

The model loses details in a very long prompt

Narrow the task. Supply the relevant chapter or sequence, a concise continuity reference, and a specific requested output. If the broader book is needed, ask one question at a time—such as how an early clue pays off—rather than combining plot analysis, scene drafting, style revision, and continuity checking into a single request. Anthropic’s warning about context rot is a reminder that more source text can make recall less dependable, not more.

The uploaded file is rejected or poorly read

Check file size, supported format, and plan limits first. Claude’s documented chat limit is 30MB per file, and its PDF handling has the page-related qualification described above. ChatGPT’s 2-million-token text/document cap is per file, not a guarantee of equivalent active context. For any service, try a clean DOCX, EPUB, or text export if the original document’s layout or extraction is problematic, and confirm the result against the original.

Which service fits which kind of adaptation project?

  • Choose Claude first when the source is EPUB, PDF, or DOCX and your first priority is broad manuscript mapping with a large documented context window. Keep within the upload constraints and verify long-context summaries.
  • Choose ChatGPT for staged production when you want project organization, chapter-by-chapter drafting, structured outlines, and repeated revisions. Select the model and plan deliberately because the published context tiers differ.
  • Consider Grok for exploratory work when a 500K-token context, configurable reasoning, file collections, or API use suits the project. Confirm the interface’s book-format support and review applicable privacy terms before uploading.
  • Choose a human-led workflow regardless of service when the book is sensitive, the adaptation is commercially important, rights are unclear, or continuity and voice need close editorial judgment. AI can accelerate analysis and draft options, but it cannot authorize use of the source or validate its own adaptation.
