Grimoire is an open-source package manager for AI-agent best practices. It treats a practice such as code review, a retrospective, a pre-mortem or incident preparation as an installable, versioned skill rather than advice someone must remember at the right moment. You declare skill libraries in grimoire.toml, install them from a Git registry, expose the Markdown runbooks to your coding agent, and use grimoire check to inspect project work against the practices you declared.

That distinction is the point of Jeffrey Tse’s project: an AI agent may be able to explain a best practice and still fail to apply it during a hurried review or launch. Grimoire’s proposed loop is to install sourced runbooks, route a situation to the relevant practice, and check the resulting work. The project presents that as a way to make good process available in the moment, not as proof that any agent will automatically become more reliable.

What problem is Grimoire trying to solve?

Teams usually have no shortage of engineering advice. They have review checklists, retrospective formats, reliability guidance and incident procedures. The failure is situational: the team remembers the practice after the review, skips it during a deadline, or applies an informal version that no one can audit. Grimoire is designed around that gap between knowing a practice and using it consistently.

Tse describes Grimoire as “npm for AI-agent best practices.” The analogy is about distribution and repeatability. Instead of pasting a long prompt into one assistant, a team declares a library, pins versions and makes the same skills available to its project and its agents. The repository and website position the project as free and MIT-licensed; those are project-published terms, so check the current repositories before adopting a particular release.

How does the package model work?

A Grimoire installation has three connected pieces: a package declaration, a skill library and the agent context into which the skills are linked.

1. Declare the libraries

The project file is grimoire.toml. It declares which skill libraries a project expects. The repository also describes package manifests and lock files, allowing a team to record resolved versions instead of relying on whatever a registry serves on a later day.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

2. Install from a Git registry

Grimoire clones skill libraries from a Git registry and links their skill files into the context directories used by supported agents. That makes a skill reusable across projects and, where the project’s compatibility claims hold, across different assistants rather than trapping the instructions in one vendor’s configuration format.

3. Give the agent an actionable runbook

A skill is described as a Markdown runbook with four essential parts:

  • a triggering condition that says when the practice applies;
  • a cited source that gives the practice provenance;
  • numbered steps the agent can follow; and
  • a verdict form that records the result.

Because the same skill file supplies agent guidance and compliance criteria, the instructions and the check are intended to stay aligned. That is a design claim, not independent evidence that every skill is complete or that every verdict is correct.

What happens when an agent encounters a situation?

Grimoire describes automatic situation-to-skill routing. The agent or surrounding workflow identifies a condition, then selects an installed practice whose trigger matches it. If the required practice is not installed, the tool is described as identifying what should be added to grimoire.toml.

Missed sprint goals

In the author’s example, a team that is missing sprint goals is routed to a retrospective practice. The runbook can structure the discussion around evidence, causes and actions instead of leaving the agent to produce a generic “what went well” summary.

A launch in 48 hours

For an approaching launch, the example routes first to a pre-mortem, then to service-level-objective and incident-response practices. The sequence is illustrative: it shows how one situation can invoke several practices, rather than proving that the router detects every launch or orders every runbook correctly.

A code review

The article shows a code-review skill flagging missing tests, a possible secret exposure and an undocumented breaking change. These are examples shown by the author, not measured test results or an independent security audit. A team should still validate findings and use its normal secret-scanning, test and release controls.

How do you install Grimoire?

The project website lists three installation routes. Availability and commands can change, so use the current release instructions for the version you intend to run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Platform or route What the project lists Important qualification
macOS Published binary Use the current release asset and verify its architecture support.
Linux Published binary Use the release instructions for your distribution and architecture.
Windows PowerShell installer Review the current script and execution requirements before running it.
Go go install The website states that Go 1.21 or newer is required.

After installation, initialize or update the project’s declared libraries using the current setup commands from the project documentation. The durable part of the workflow is the manifest and lock-file model: commit those files with the project, review changes as code, and run grimoire check from the project directory when you want a compliance pass.

What does grimoire check actually check?

grimoire check audits project work against the practices installed for that project. The repository describes more than one checking mode, including a changed-file scope and JUnit output for systems that consume test-report XML.

Whole-project or declared-practice review

Use the normal check when you want the installed practices evaluated against the project state. The exact criteria come from the skill files, so two projects with different libraries can receive different checks.

Changed-file scope

A changed-file mode limits the inspection to work touched by a change. This is useful when a full repository audit would be noisy or expensive, but it can miss a dependency or operational consequence outside the changed set. Treat the scope as an explicit review decision, not as proof that unaffected files are safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

JUnit output

JUnit output lets a check feed a CI or reporting system that already understands test-result XML. The presence of an output format does not establish that Grimoire automatically blocks merges; configure that policy in your own pipeline and verify the exit-code and failure behavior for your installed release.

Which AI agents and platforms does Grimoire support?

The repositories and website name Claude, Copilot, Codex, Gemini, OpenCode, OpenClaw, Cursor and Antigravity among the detected or compatible agents. These are project claims that can change with releases, and detection is not the same as identical feature behavior on every platform.

Question What to verify locally
Is the agent detected? Run the current setup flow and confirm that Grimoire finds the agent’s context directory.
Are skills linked where the agent reads them? Inspect the generated links or files and check that a small test skill appears in the expected context.
Does the agent preserve the runbook format? Ask it to show the trigger, source, steps and verdict rather than assuming a prompt was loaded.
Does checking work with this agent? Run grimoire check and review the report, then test the changed-file and JUnit modes if your workflow needs them.

How should a team adopt the workflow?

A small, controlled rollout is safer than installing every available domain at once.

  1. Choose one recurring failure. Start with a concrete problem such as reviews that omit tests or launches that lack a pre-mortem.
  2. Declare only the relevant library. Add the selected domain to grimoire.toml and commit the manifest.
  3. Resolve and pin versions. Keep the lock file so another developer or CI runner receives the same package revision.
  4. Inspect the runbook. Confirm that the trigger is recognizable, the source is credible, the steps are actionable and the verdict matches the decision you need.
  5. Run the agent in a low-risk change. Compare the generated review or plan with your existing process; do not grant new production permissions merely because a skill is installed.
  6. Run the check. Use grimoire check and record which findings are actionable, false positives or outside the skill’s scope.
  7. Set a maintenance owner. Review package updates, source changes and local exceptions just as you would review a dependency update.

What are the advantages over a prompt library or agent-specific file?

Grimoire’s claimed distinction is the combination of portability, provenance, reproducibility and checking. A plain prompt library can store useful text, but it may not tell an agent when to use it or provide a machine-readable verdict. An agent-specific configuration file can be convenient, but it usually has to be rewritten when a team changes assistants.

How many skills and domains are available?

The project repeatedly advertises more than 1,000 skills, but that count is a mutable claim by the project rather than an independently audited total. Domain counts are inconsistent across the project’s own pages: the repository description and website domain section use 26 in some places, while the README and website FAQ use 27. Do not treat either number as a permanent inventory; check the current library before planning around a specific domain.

Per-domain counts can also change as skills are added, removed or reorganized. A lock file records the versions your project resolved, but it does not make the public catalog immutable.

What are the main risks and limitations?

Runbook quality is not guaranteed by packaging

A skill can be neatly versioned and still be vague, outdated or inappropriate for your system. Read its source and steps, test it on representative work and keep a human owner for exceptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Routing can be wrong or incomplete

A missed trigger means a relevant practice is never invoked; an overly broad trigger creates noise. Make important practices explicit in release and incident checklists instead of relying only on automatic routing.

Checks are not proof of security or reliability

A finding about a possible secret, missing test or undocumented breaking change is a prompt for investigation. It does not replace secret scanning, test execution, threat modeling, deployment controls or incident command.

Agent context can leak sensitive material

Linking skills into an agent’s context changes what the agent can read. Review repository permissions, avoid placing credentials in runbooks, and check the Git sources you install. Treat third-party skill libraries like any other dependency.

Compatibility can drift

Agent context-directory conventions, installers and supported platforms can change. Pin the Grimoire release, test upgrades in a branch and verify detection after updating an agent or operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should you troubleshoot a failed installation or check?

  • The agent is not detected: confirm you installed a supported current release, then inspect the agent’s documented context location and rerun setup.
  • No skills appear in the agent: verify that the library resolved successfully, the links were created in the directory the agent actually reads, and the project is using the intended grimoire.toml.
  • The check reports unexpected failures: read the skill’s trigger and verdict, confirm the check scope, and decide whether the finding is a real gap or a project-specific exception.
  • CI cannot consume the report: select the repository’s JUnit output mode and validate the generated XML against your CI parser; also verify how the installed version signals failure.
  • An update changes results: compare the lock file and skill diff, review source changes, and roll back to the previous pinned version if the new practice is not ready.

Is Grimoire ready for production governance?

It is best viewed as an infrastructure layer for practices, not an autonomous governance system. The package-and-lock model can make runbooks easier to distribute, review and reproduce, while the check command can expose omissions that a purely conversational workflow might miss. Whether that improves outcomes depends on the quality of the installed skills, the accuracy of their triggers and the human process around exceptions.

The strongest initial use is a narrow, observable workflow: install one sourced skill, pin it, run it on real changes, inspect the findings and measure whether the team actually closes the gaps. Expand only after the runbook and report fit your engineering process. The project’s slogan is “Your AI knows everything — Grimoire makes it practice it,” but the practical qualification is important: Grimoire can supply structure and reminders; your team still has to validate the advice and act on the verdict.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Grimoire train or fine-tune an AI model?

Nothing in the project description indicates model training or weight changes. Its documented approach is to place Markdown skill runbooks in an agent’s context and use them during work, so behavior still depends on the selected agent and the quality of that context.

Can a locked skill library be updated safely?

Yes, treat an update like a dependency change: review the manifest and lock-file diff, read changed runbooks and test the new revision on representative work before rolling it into CI or release procedures. A lock file preserves the revision you selected; it does not certify that the revision is correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a JUnit report automatically fail my pull request?

Not necessarily. JUnit is an output format for tools that consume test-result XML; whether a pull request is blocked depends on your CI rules and on the exit-code behavior of the Grimoire version you installed.

Can I use Grimoire without installing every domain?

The repository describes installing all domains or selected domains. Starting with a selected library keeps the agent context and compliance surface focused, and you can add another domain to the project declaration when a real workflow requires it.
