GQ Ball Pen Industries Limited reported a return to profit in fiscal 2025-26 after nine years, with earnings per share (EPS) recovering to Tk0.12 from a Tk1.83 loss per share in 2024-25. Its board recommended a 12.5% cash dividend. However, the result is not yet proof that pen manufacturing has recovered: management said rent from a 14-storey Uttara building and investment returns helped earnings, while ageing machinery led it to reduce production. The auditor also identified unresolved valuation, tax and receivables-control issues.

GQ’s price-sensitive information filing dated 8 October 2026 shows a sharp year-on-year improvement in reported earnings. EPS moved from Tk(1.83) in 2024-25 to Tk0.12 in 2025-26. The board recommended a 12.5% cash dividend for all shareholders. Shareholders are due to consider the recommendation at the annual general meeting on 30 November 2026; 4 November 2026 is the stated record date. Why did GQ Ball Pen return to profit after nine years?
The reported recovery appears to have come from a mix of cost reduction and income outside core pen production, rather than a demonstrated surge in sales.
Rental and investment income supported earnings
Ershad told Daily Sun that rent from GQ’s 14-storey commercial building in Uttara and returns on investments contributed to the improved result. Those sources can lift accounting profit even when factory output and product demand remain weak.

Management also said it cut production to reduce operating costs because the company’s machinery is ageing. That may protect cash in the short term, but it is not the same as expanding manufacturing capacity or selling more pens.

The preceding year showed how weak the core trend was
Daily Sun, citing the company’s earlier report, said FY2025 sales were Tk1.85 crore, down from Tk5.43 crore a year earlier, and that the company recorded a Tk1.63 crore net loss in FY2025. These figures make the distinction between a return to reported profit and a recovery in pen demand especially important.
Are GQ Ball Pen’s audit concerns serious?
The auditor’s points are control and measurement concerns that require follow-through. They are not, by themselves, proof of wrongdoing, but they can affect the reliability of reported assets, liabilities and earnings if left unresolved.
Associate-company investment still lacked a completed fair valuation
GQ carried a Tk2.17 crore investment in Maladesh International (Pvt.) Ltd. while the fair-value assessment was still in progress. Management expected a positive result based on the associate’s underlying properties, including land, but the final valuation could change the investment’s carrying amount and therefore reported assets and equity.

Some source-deducted taxes remained unpaid
At 30 June 2026, source-deducted VAT and income tax totaled Tk14.61 lakh: Tk6.20 lakh of VAT and Tk8.41 lakh of income tax. The company later paid Tk94,770 in income tax on 26 July and Tk1.19 lakh in VAT on 15 September. Daily Sun reported that Tk12.47 lakh remained outstanding after those payments.
Receivables provisioning lacked a documented method
GQ had provided Tk10.20 lakh against potentially doubtful trade and other receivables. The auditor said the provision was not supported by a formal policy or an ageing analysis. A proper ageing schedule would classify invoices by how long they have been unpaid and apply a documented provisioning basis, making future bad-debt charges more consistent and reviewable.
Is the profit recovery coming from pens or from other income?
Based on the available disclosures, the evidence supports the latter interpretation more strongly. Management specifically cited rent and investment returns, while also acknowledging lower production because of ageing equipment. No disclosed figure in the cited reports demonstrates that pen sales or factory margins rebounded.

What does the 12.5% dividend mean for shareholders?
