GPT4All is an open-source desktop application from Nomic AI that downloads compatible large language models and runs them on your own Windows PC, Windows ARM device, Mac, or Ubuntu/Linux computer. To install it, choose the installer matching your operating system and processor architecture, open the app, select Start Chatting, add a model, load it, and begin prompting. The important preparation is checking AVX or AVX2 CPU support, available RAM, and disk space for the model file. Downloaded models process prompts locally, while an API connection sends prompts to the API provider instead.
What is GPT4All, and how does its installation work?
GPT4All is both a desktop chatbot application and a Python client for running compatible large language models locally. Its documentation describes the goal as running LLMs privately on everyday desktops and laptops, with no API calls or dedicated GPU required for the basic download-and-run workflow.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The application itself is small compared with the models. During setup you install the program, then use its model explorer to download a quantized model to your computer. When you load that model, inference is performed by your local CPU, Apple Metal backend, or supported GPU backend. Your computer therefore needs enough memory for the selected model, not merely enough space to install the application.
The installation sequence is the same in principle on every supported platform:

That first successful response is the useful test: it confirms that the installer, model file, backend, and available memory all work together on your machine.
Which GPT4All installer should I download?
Download the package that matches both your operating system and its processor architecture. Installing the wrong architecture can prevent the application from launching even when the computer appears powerful enough.
Windows
The project requirements list an Intel Core i3 2nd Generation processor or AMD Bulldozer equivalent, or better, for the standard Windows build. Confirm that the machine is a conventional x86-64 Windows installation before selecting that installer.
Windows on ARM
GPT4All provides a Windows ARM option for devices using Qualcomm Snapdragon or Microsoft SQ1/SQ2 processors. Select this build rather than the conventional Windows package when the computer uses one of those ARM platforms.
macOS
The documented minimum is macOS Monterey 12.6 or newer. Older macOS releases do not meet that stated requirement, so update the operating system first or use a supported computer.
Ubuntu and Linux
The Linux build is x86-64 only. A Linux computer with an ARM processor does not match the documented architecture requirement, even if it has sufficient RAM.

What hardware does GPT4All need?
Two checks matter before downloading a model: instruction-set support and memory. The FAQ states that the CPU must support AVX or AVX2 instructions and that the computer needs enough RAM to load the selected model into memory.
- CPU: AVX or AVX2 support is required by the documented FAQ.
- Architecture: match the installer to x86-64, Windows ARM, or macOS requirements.
- RAM: use the model’s listed requirement, not a generic application minimum.
- Storage: keep free disk space for the downloaded model file and normal operating-system headroom.
- Acceleration: GPT4All can use CPU, Apple Metal, or GPU backends where supported.
A laptop with at least 8 GB of RAM is a reasonable entry point for smaller quantized models, but it is not a guarantee for every model. The official model table gives a separate RAM requirement for each entry, and larger parameter counts generally need more memory.
How much storage and RAM do the example models require?
The following values are the model-table figures published in GPT4All documentation. File size is the download footprint; the RAM figure is the documented amount needed to load that model. Quantization, shown as Q4_0 in these examples, reduces memory and storage needs compared with an unquantized model, with a possible quality trade-off.
| Model | Quantization | File size | RAM requirement | Parameters | Developer | License |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Llama 3 Instruct | Q4_0 | 4.66 GB | 8 GB | 8 billion | Meta | Llama 3 License |
| Nous Hermes 2 Mistral DPO | Q4_0 | 4.11 GB | 8 GB | 7 billion | Nous | Apache 2.0 |
| Phi-3 Mini Instruct | Q4_0 | 2.18 GB | 4 GB | 4 billion | Microsoft | MIT |
| Mini Orca (Small) | Q4_0 | 1.98 GB | 4 GB | 3 billion | Microsoft | CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0 |
| GPT4All Snoozy | Q4_0 | 7.37 GB | 16 GB | 13 billion | Nomic AI | GPL |
GPT4All documentation says the application is optimized for models in roughly the 3–13 billion parameter range. A 3B or 4B model is the safer first download on a 4 GB machine. On an 8 GB computer, the 7B and 8B examples fit the published model requirements, but the operating system and other applications also consume memory. The 13B example has a 16 GB requirement and should not be treated as an 8 GB option.

Which model should I download first?
Start with the smallest model that meets your task and memory budget, then move up if its answers are not coherent enough. Smaller quantized models generally load faster and use less memory; larger parameter counts generally improve instruction-following coherence but require more storage and RAM.
If the computer has about 4 GB of RAM
Choose either Phi-3 Mini Instruct Q4_0 (2.18 GB download, 4 GB documented RAM requirement) or Mini Orca (Small) Q4_0 (1.98 GB, 4 GB). Leave other applications closed while testing because the published requirement does not mean the whole operating system will fit inside the same 4 GB.

If the computer has about 8 GB of RAM
Llama 3 Instruct Q4_0 is an 8B-parameter example with a 4.66 GB file and an 8 GB documented requirement. Nous Hermes 2 Mistral DPO Q4_0 is a 7B alternative with a 4.11 GB file and the same 8 GB requirement. Compare their responses on your own tasks rather than assuming one is universally better.
If the computer has 16 GB of RAM
GPT4All Snoozy Q4_0 is the listed 13B option, with a 7.37 GB file and a 16 GB documented requirement. It may provide more coherent instruction following than smaller choices, but it also leaves less memory for other programs.
How should I account for licensing?
Model licenses are not interchangeable. Apache 2.0 and MIT have different obligations from the Llama 3 License, GPL, or CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0. If you plan to distribute outputs as part of a product, redistribute model files, or deploy the model commercially, read the complete license for that specific model and satisfy its attribution, source, or noncommercial conditions before use.
How do I install GPT4All step by step?
Use this procedure after confirming the operating-system version, architecture, AVX or AVX2 support, RAM, and free storage.
- Get the matching installer. Select Windows, Windows ARM, macOS, or Ubuntu/Linux according to the platform requirements. On Linux, verify that the system is x86-64; on macOS, verify Monterey 12.6 or newer.
- Run the installer. Accept the operating system’s normal installation prompts and launch GPT4All when setup finishes.
- Start a chat. On the first screen, click Start Chatting.
- Add a model. Click + Add Model to open the model explorer. Review the file size, RAM requirement, parameter count, and license before starting the download.
- Download the model. Keep the application open until the download completes. Ensure the destination drive has more free space than the displayed file size.
- Load it. Open Chats and select Load Default Model, or select the downloaded model by name.
- Run a simple test. Ask a short factual or summarization question. A response confirms that the model loaded and the selected backend is functioning.
- Try a representative task. Use the prompts you actually care about and observe response quality, loading time, and whether the computer remains responsive. No comparable official tokens-per-second or latency benchmark is provided for these models across current hardware, so a local trial is more reliable than an advertised speed assumption.
Is GPT4All really private and offline?
When you download a model and run it locally, the prompt is processed on your computer rather than sent to a remote inference service. That is the privacy boundary described by GPT4All’s documentation: local models can operate without API calls, and an internet connection is mainly needed to obtain the application and model files or to use online features.
GPT4All also allows connections to model APIs. In that mode the application does not download the model; your prompt is sent to the selected API provider for processing. Treat local-model mode and API mode as different data paths, and check which model or provider is selected before entering confidential information.

What can developers do with GPT4All?
The Python package is installed with pip install gpt4all. It wraps llama.cpp implementations and can load a local GGUF model from Python. The README example uses Meta-Llama-3-8B-Instruct.Q4_0.gguf, a 4.66 GB model corresponding to the Llama 3 Instruct entry in the model table.
A minimal installation command is:
pip install gpt4all
After installation, use the package’s documented Python loading pattern and provide the model filename. Keep the model file available locally and make sure the process has enough RAM for that model. The FAQ also documents an OpenAI-compatible server mode and a lightweight Python CLI, which can be useful when an existing tool expects an OpenAI-style endpoint or when you want to script prompts without opening the desktop interface.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do when installation or loading fails?
The installer will not launch
Recheck the platform and architecture first. Windows ARM devices need the ARM package, Linux must be x86-64, and macOS must be Monterey 12.6 or newer. A CPU that lacks AVX or AVX2 does not meet the documented requirement.
The model download fails or stops
Check the available disk space against the model’s displayed file size and retry the download. If the computer is on a restricted network, complete the download on an approved connection and then use the model through the normal local workflow.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The model will not load
Compare the model’s RAM requirement with installed memory and close other memory-intensive applications. A 16 GB model requirement should not be interpreted as suitable for an 8 GB computer. If a larger model fails, remove it from consideration and test a smaller 3B or 4B quantized model.
Responses are too slow or not useful
Try a smaller quantized model, then compare it with a larger model if memory allows. GPT4All can use CPU, Apple Metal, or GPU backends, but actual speed depends on the computer and backend. Because the published material does not provide a common speed or quality benchmark, judge the result with a repeatable set of your own prompts.

I expected local privacy but connected an API
Inspect the selected model and connection type in the application. A downloaded local model keeps inference on the device; an API-connected model sends prompts to its provider instead. Switch back to the downloaded model before processing information that must remain local.
How should I evaluate a model after it installs?
Use the same short test set for every model you are considering. Include one instruction-following task, one summarization task, and one question that resembles your real work. Record whether the model follows constraints, how much context it handles, and whether the computer remains usable while it runs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Parameter count: larger counts can improve coherence but increase memory needs.
- Quantization: smaller quantized files are easier to run but may reduce quality.
- Context needs: long documents can require more memory than a short prompt.
- Backend fit: CPU, Metal, and GPU availability changes the practical experience.
- License: verify permissions before commercial deployment or redistribution.
- Storage: retain enough free space for model files and updates.
This approach avoids choosing solely by parameter count. A model that fits comfortably and answers your prompts consistently is more useful than a larger model that cannot load reliably.
What is the practical installation checklist?
- Identify the operating system and CPU architecture.
- Confirm AVX or AVX2 support.
- Verify the minimum operating-system version or platform requirement.
- Check installed RAM against the chosen model’s published requirement.
- Reserve disk space larger than the displayed model download size.
- Read the model license, especially for commercial work.
- Download through + Add Model, then load it from Chats.
- Test local prompts before connecting an API.
- Keep a smaller quantized model available as a fallback.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can GPT4All use a model file I already downloaded?
Yes, the desktop workflow is based on selecting a model in the model explorer and loading a local model. The file must be a GPT4All-compatible model in the format supported by the application, and its RAM requirement still applies even when you did not download it through the interface.
Does GPT4All require a dedicated graphics card?
No. The official description says the basic workflow requires no GPU, and GPT4All can run through a CPU backend. Apple Metal and GPU backends are additional acceleration options when the computer supports them.
Can I use the Python client without opening the desktop app?
Yes. Install the package with pip install gpt4all and load a compatible local model from Python. The project also documents a lightweight Python CLI, so scripted use does not depend on the desktop chat window.
