Why this update matters (even if you don’t notice new features)
When updates land on older streaming hardware, the impact is usually felt indirectly: fewer connection dropouts, improved compatibility with casting sources, and better handling of network changes.
- Security and maintenance: Even if the UI looks identical, firmware can receive security updates.
- Compatibility: Casting relies on network behavior and app protocols that evolve over time; old firmware can become “close but not quite.”
- Stability: Long gaps increase the chance of regression against newer mobile OS and browser versions.
What to check before you update
You don’t typically need to do anything special—Chromecast updates are handled automatically. Still, a few quick checks reduce the odds of problems.
Confirm your Chromecast is online
Open the Google Home app and verify your Chromecast shows as available. If it’s offline, the update may not download yet.
Use a stable Wi‑Fi setup
Older Chromecast models can be more sensitive to Wi‑Fi quirks. If possible, avoid guest networks and heavily isolated router modes that block device-to-device traffic.
Don’t plan the update around a critical viewing moment
If the Chromecast is actively casting, you may see brief hiccups during the firmware install. If you’re about to watch something important, postpone and let it update first.
How to confirm you actually received the update
The key is checking the device’s firmware status in Google Home. You’re looking for a changed firmware version or an update indicator.
On iPhone or iPad (Google Home)
- Open the Google Home app.
- Select your Chromecast device.
- Tap Settings (gear icon).
- Find Device information or About.
- Look for Firmware version and note it.
- If you updated, confirm the firmware version number changed from before.
On Android (Google Home)
- Open Google Home.
- Tap your Chromecast.
- Go to Settings.
- Open Device information / Device details.
- Check Firmware version.
- Compare with the version you previously recorded, or watch for the update to finalize.
If the firmware screen doesn’t show a version
Some UI variations show update status without a clearly labeled firmware number. In that case, check for an Update or Software update status entry in the device settings.

Common changes you may see after a long-delayed Chromecast update
Chromecast updates don’t always add a visible feature. Still, users typically notice one of these outcomes.
Fewer casting interruptions
If you previously experienced “stuck buffering” or sudden stops, the update may improve how Chromecast handles stream renegotiation—especially on unstable Wi‑Fi.
Better compatibility with modern casting apps
Mobile OS updates and app updates can drift over time. Firmware updates can restore compatibility with the casting protocols those apps use.
Minor UI differences on the TV screen
Some updates subtly adjust menus, background graphics, or the setup/broadcast screens. If you’re seeing small UI changes, that’s usually normal.

Troubleshooting if the update causes issues
If the Chromecast updated and something got worse—audio/video sync, lag, or casting failures—use a structured approach. Start with the least disruptive steps.
1) Reboot the Chromecast and router (power cycle)
Unplug the Chromecast from power, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in, and allow it to fully start. If the issue persists, reboot your router (then try casting again).
2) Verify Wi‑Fi credentials and router settings
- Use the same Wi‑Fi band: If your router uses band steering, try separating 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs temporarily to see if stability improves.
- Avoid guest Wi‑Fi: Guest networks often block device discovery and control.
- Check client isolation: If enabled, Chromecast control can break.
3) Update or reinstall the casting app
Because casting involves both the source app and the receiver, an updated Chromecast can expose outdated app behavior. Update the app on your phone (or try a different phone) to isolate which side is misbehaving.

4) Clear cache on Android (if casting works from another device)
If casting fails only from one Android device, clearing cache for the Google Home app and the affected casting apps can help. On Android, the exact path varies by manufacturer, but you’re aiming for Settings → Apps → (app name) → Storage → Clear cache.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5) Factory reset the 2013 Chromecast
If playback repeatedly fails after the update and other devices still work, a factory reset can clear corrupted settings.
- On the Chromecast, locate the button on the dongle.
- Keep it pressed for about 25 seconds until the LED changes behavior, then release.
- Wait for the setup screen to appear on the TV.
- Reconnect in Google Home using the standard setup flow.
Gotcha: A factory reset wipes your network pairing. You’ll need to set the Chromecast up again in Google Home.
6) Use the correct casting method (from the app vs from the browser)
Some content supports casting only through specific apps. If you’re trying to cast from a browser tab, test using the native app (for example, the YouTube app) to reduce compatibility issues.
Power users: best practices after updating an older Chromecast
The original Chromecast hardware is capable, but it’s older. A few setup choices can make post-update performance noticeably better.
Place Wi‑Fi gear for signal reliability
Ensure the Chromecast has a strong Wi‑Fi signal. Even if it connects, weak signal can cause stream instability that looks like a “software problem.”
Prefer stable networks over “performance tricks”
Router features like aggressive band steering, strict firewall rules, or heavy traffic shaping can interfere with Chromecast discovery and control.

Cast from a nearby, frequently updated phone
Because the source device initiates the cast, casting from an older phone with outdated Google Play services can be more fragile than using a current device.
Does this affect apps like YouTube, Netflix, or Spotify?
Usually, Chromecast updates aim to keep receiver compatibility with common casting workflows. That doesn’t guarantee every app will behave perfectly, especially if the app’s casting support has evolved beyond what older hardware can fully support.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →YouTube and video casting
YouTube casting is widely used on Chromecast devices, including older models. After an update, failures typically come from network settings or app-side changes rather than the receiver being unable to play.
Music apps and audio-only casting
Audio casting is often more tolerant than video streaming. If video is failing but audio works, it points toward bandwidth, router behavior, or specific video codecs rather than a total Chromecast failure.
Netflix and similar apps
Netflix support can be more sensitive to compatibility shifts. If an app suddenly stops casting, confirm your Chromecast firmware status, update the mobile app, and try again from a different phone to rule out a source-side bug.

If the update didn’t fix your experience—or you’re hitting repeated limitations—upgrading the Chromecast device is often the cleanest long-term path.
Replace with a newer Chromecast or streaming device
Newer streaming devices typically have better Wi‑Fi hardware, smoother playback buffers, and improved codec support. If you’re using a high-demand service (4K video, high-bitrate streams), the hardware gap becomes more visible.

Consider TV-native apps
If your TV supports the same services (often via built-in apps), native playback avoids casting-layer issues entirely. The tradeoff is convenience and sometimes fewer control features versus casting.
FAQ
Why would Google update a 2013 Chromecast after so long?
Long-delayed firmware updates are often about security, stability, and keeping the receiver compatible with newer casting sources and network conditions. Even if the device looks unchanged, the firmware can still be updated.
Will this update add new features or a newer interface?
It’s possible to see minor interface changes, but these rollouts typically focus on maintenance. If you’re expecting a major “new UI,” the odds are low; the more likely improvements are behind-the-scenes.
How long does Chromecast updating take?
It varies by network speed and whether the device already has components cached. Expect it to take anywhere from a few minutes to longer if your network is unstable.
Can I force the update manually?
Usually you can’t “push” a specific firmware version on demand. The reliable method is to ensure the Chromecast is online and connected in Google Home, then wait for the update check.
If the update breaks casting, can I roll back?
Rolling back Chromecast firmware isn’t something typical users can control. If the update causes persistent issues, the practical recovery path is power-cycling, router adjustments, updating the casting app, or performing a factory reset.
Does changing my Wi‑Fi name affect the Chromecast after an update?
Yes. If you change SSID/password, you’ll likely need to re-pair the Chromecast in Google Home. Keep Wi‑Fi credentials current to avoid repeated reconnect loops.

Google’s update to the 2013 Chromecast after more than three years is a reminder that Chromecast firmware still matters—especially for compatibility and stability. Even if you don’t see flashy new features, the improvement can show up as fewer casting hiccups.
If the update doesn’t improve your setup (or it causes issues), verify firmware in Google Home, check Wi‑Fi/router settings, and use power cycling or a factory reset as your final recovery steps.
