To enable or disable automatic app archiving, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, then go to Settings > General > Automatically archive apps and switch the setting on or off. To protect just one app, turn off Manage app if unused in that app’s Android settings instead.
Archiving removes an app’s installed software but retains its icon and app data. It is not the same as uninstalling, and it does not mean the app will keep working in the background: archived apps stop sending notifications until they are restored. This guide explains which setting to use, how to find it, and what to check if an app will not restore.

Automatic app archiving is an opt-in Google Play feature for making room on a device. When an app is archived, Android removes the app’s installed software, permissions, and temporary files. The app’s icon and app data remain on the device, and the icon appears faded with an archiving indicator. Notifications stop while the app is archived.
In practical terms, archiving frees space used by the installed app without removing every sign that it was there. The saved icon offers a route back to the app, and retaining the app data means the archive is different from starting over with a newly installed app. However, the app is not fully installed while archived, so do not rely on it to provide notifications or other installed-app functions until you restore it.

Archiving is different from uninstalling. Both remove the installed software from the device, but an archived app keeps its icon and app data for possible restoration. An uninstall does not preserve the app in this archived state. If you want to make an app temporarily less space-consuming while keeping its presence and data, archiving is the closer fit. If you choose to uninstall, do not assume the archive’s data-retention behavior will apply.
Restoring an archived app requires downloading it again. The app must still be available from the app store, the store must be installed, and the device must have enough free storage to complete the reinstall. Keeping an icon and data is therefore not a guarantee that every app can be restored at any time: availability and storage still matter.

How do I turn automatic app archiving on or off?
The global control is in the Play Store app, not in the phone’s general Settings app. Use this path:
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Open General.
- Switch Automatically archive apps on to opt in, or off to disable the global option.
Turning the setting on opts in to automatic archiving. Turning it off stops the global automatic-archiving option; it does not itself reinstall or restore apps that have already been archived. If you disable the setting because you want to keep a particular app installed, the per-app control described below is usually the more targeted choice. If you want no automatic archiving across eligible apps, use the global switch.
The setting governs automatic archiving across eligible apps rather than just the app currently selected on the phone. It is not a command to archive every app immediately, nor is switching it off a command to undo past archiving. Think of it as a preference for the automatic feature, while archiving and restoration for an individual app are separate actions.
How do I stop Android from archiving one app?
If automatic archiving is useful for most apps but one app needs to remain installed, change that app’s own setting rather than turning off the feature everywhere. This can be useful for an authentication app, a travel app you need on a trip, a work app, or an accessibility app. Those are examples of why someone might want an exception; the documented control is the same for each.
- Open the phone’s Settings app, rather than the Play Store’s settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the app you want to protect.
- Turn off Manage app if unused.
This is a per-app setting. Turning it off for one selected app does not disable automatic archiving for other apps. It is the narrower option when the goal is to keep one app from being automatically managed while leaving the global feature available elsewhere.

Google notes that turning off Manage app if unused does not prevent you from archiving that app manually. The distinction is between automatic management of that app and a deliberate manual archive action. If you are looking for the Play Store’s global switch, return to Google Play Store > profile picture > Settings > General; if you are protecting one app, use that app’s page under the phone’s Settings > Apps.
How do I archive or restore an app manually?
Archive an app
On supported devices, open Settings > Apps > [app name] > Archive. Select the app you intend to archive and use the available Archive control. This is a manual, app-by-app action, rather than a change to the global Play Store preference.
The manual archive control is not guaranteed to appear on every Android device. Google says some archive steps work only on Android 15 and up, and some require supporting hardware. If you cannot find the control, it may reflect the device’s Android version or hardware support; it does not necessarily mean that you have missed the global automatic-archiving switch.
Restore an archived app
The simplest route is to find the faded archived icon on the home screen and tap it. Tapping the icon starts the reinstall process. Google also documents unarchiving an app from its App info page in Settings or from the app’s details page in the Play Store.
Restoration is a download and reinstall, not simply a change to the icon’s appearance. Check the practical requirements before troubleshooting further:
- The app store must be installed.
- The app must still be available to download from the store.
- The device needs enough free storage to reinstall the app.
If storage is insufficient, the reinstall can be blocked until you make room. If the app is no longer available in the store, keeping its archived icon and data does not make the download available. When the listing is available and the device has adequate space, use the faded icon, the app’s Settings page, or the Play Store app-details page to begin restoring it.
Restoring is also separate from switching automatic archiving off. The global switch controls whether automatic archiving is enabled; it does not replace the restore action for an app that is already archived. If you have turned automatic archiving off and still see an archived app, use one of the restore paths above.

When does automatic archiving happen?
Google’s product announcement dated April 10, 2023 described the original flow: someone tries to install a new app while the device is out of storage, is prompted to enable auto-archive, and, after opting in, may have unused apps archived to make room for the requested installation. The feature is opt-in; Google’s announcement does not describe an automatic setting that is enabled without the user’s consent.
That description helps explain why a person might first encounter the option during an attempted installation rather than while browsing settings. The setting can also be checked later in the Play Store under Settings > General. If you accepted the prompt, you can use that global control to turn the option off, or use the per-app Manage app if unused setting to protect one app while leaving the global feature available.
Google’s current help information does not publish a universal number of inactive days before an app is archived. It also does not promise a fixed number of apps that will be archived. Avoid treating an arbitrary period of non-use as a guaranteed trigger; the documented guidance does not establish one. The announcement describes unused apps being archived after opt-in to help with an out-of-storage install, but it does not give a day-count schedule.
Google said auto-archive could free up to nearly 60% of an app’s storage space while preserving the app’s presence and data. That figure comes from Google’s April 10, 2023 announcement and is a product claim, not a guaranteed saving for every app or device. The amount freed can’t be inferred for a particular app from that upper-end figure. In particular, “up to nearly 60%” should not be read as a promise that every archive will free that amount or that the same storage total will apply across different apps.
Why can’t I find the setting?
The exact label or location can vary with the Android release, Play Store version, device manufacturer, and regional configuration. First check that you are in the Google Play Store app and have opened its Settings > General section. The phone’s general Settings app is where you find the per-app control, not the global Play Store toggle.
- Looking for the global setting? Open the Play Store, tap the profile picture, then choose Settings > General. Look for Automatically archive apps.
- Trying to protect one app? Open the phone’s Settings > Apps > [app name] and look for Manage app if unused.
- Looking for manual Archive? The control is under the selected app’s information in Settings on supported devices. Some steps require Android 15 or newer and some require supporting hardware.
- Can’t restore an app? Check that the app is still listed for download, the store is installed, and the device has enough free storage.
If the global switch is absent after checking the correct Play Store menu, Android release, Play Store version, device support, or regional configuration may be the reason. The available guidance does not identify one universal fix for a missing toggle. Likewise, a missing manual Archive control can be a support limitation rather than evidence that automatic archiving is off.
Keep the two routes straight while checking: Play Store > Settings > General is the global automatic option; phone Settings > Apps > [app] is where the per-app management control and, on supported devices, manual archive option may be found. Going to the wrong settings app is an easy way to mistake one control for another.

Which option should I use?
Choose based on how broad a change you want, what should happen to app data, and whether you may need the app again. The global option, per-app setting, manual archive, and uninstall do different jobs:

Use the global switch if you want to opt in to or out of automatic archiving for eligible apps generally. Use Manage app if unused if you want to make an exception for one app. Use manual archiving when you want to choose a particular app yourself and the device supports the control. Uninstalling is not the equivalent of archiving: it does not keep the same archived icon-and-data state.
There are two practical trade-offs to keep in mind. First, an archived app stops notifications, so an app that needs to alert you may be a poor candidate to leave eligible for automatic archiving. Second, an archived icon makes restoration more convenient, but the app still has to be downloadable and enough storage must be available to install it again. If either point matters for one app, consider changing that app’s own setting rather than disabling the feature globally.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing the two Settings menus: the global switch is in Play Store settings; Manage app if unused is on the app’s page in the phone’s Settings app.
- Expecting the global switch to restore past archives: turning automatic archiving off does not reinstall apps already archived. Restore those apps individually.
- Assuming an archived app still sends alerts: Google says archived apps stop notifications until restored.
- Expecting a universal inactivity deadline: Google does not publish one fixed number of idle days or a guaranteed number of apps to archive.
- Reading the storage claim as a promise: “up to nearly 60%” is Google’s 2023 product figure, not a per-app guarantee.
- Assuming every phone has manual Archive: some manual steps need Android 15 or newer and some require supporting hardware.
- Assuming the icon guarantees a successful reinstall: the store must be installed, the app must remain available, and free storage must be sufficient.

Does archiving delete my app data?
Google says archiving removes the installed software, permissions, and temporary files but keeps the app icon and app data. Archived apps stop sending notifications until restored.
How do I restore an archived Android app?
Tap the app’s faded icon on the home screen, or unarchive it from its App info page in Settings or its app-details page in the Play Store. The store must be installed, the app must still be available to download, and there must be enough free storage.
Will Google Play archive an app after a specific number of days?
Google’s current help information does not publish a universal number of inactive days before an app is archived, or promise a particular number of apps will be archived.
How much storage does automatic app archiving save?
Google said in its April 10, 2023 announcement that auto-archive can free up to nearly 60% of an app’s storage space. This is not a guaranteed amount for every app or device.
Can I disable automatic archiving and still archive apps myself?
Yes. The global toggle controls automatic archiving. Google also documents manual archiving on supported devices, though some steps require Android 15 or newer and some require supporting hardware.
Why is the Archive button missing from an app’s settings?
Manual archiving is available only on supported devices. Google says some archive steps require Android 15 or newer and some require supporting hardware, so the control may not appear on every device.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will turning off automatic archiving bring my archived apps back?
No. Turning off the global option does not itself restore apps already archived. Tap an archived app’s faded icon or use its App info page in Settings or its details page in the Play Store to start restoring it.
The Bottom Line
For the global control, go to Google Play Store > profile picture > Settings > General > Automatically archive apps. To keep one app from being automatically managed, turn off Manage app if unused for that app in the phone’s Settings. Archiving retains the app icon and data, but removes installed software and stops notifications; restoring requires an available app listing and enough free storage.
