If Google Play app archiving is not working, first identify which feature is failing: Android 15’s manual Archive control, Play Store’s automatic archiving, or restoring an app that is already archived. They have different requirements. Google says manual archiving steps may require Android 15 or later and supporting hardware; automatic archiving depends on Play Store settings, low storage, and app eligibility. To restore an app, you need an internet connection, the original app store installed, the app still available there, and enough free internal storage.
Archiving removes an app’s software, permissions, and temporary files but keeps its icon and data, according to Google Play Help. The app cannot run until its software is downloaded again, and notifications stop while it is archived. Use the checks below for the symptom you actually have; a missing button, an idle automatic setting, and a failed restore are not the same problem.

What does app archiving do?
Archiving is a reversible partial uninstall, not a compressed copy of the app. Google Play Help describes it this way: “When an app is archived, your device removes its software, permissions, temporary files, and stops notifications, but retains the app icon and data.” The faded icon usually remains in the launcher or app drawer, often with a cloud or download badge. Tapping it starts a download rather than opening the app.
The retained data can make returning to an app easier than reinstalling from scratch, but it is not a promise that every login, setting, offline file, or unsynced item will return exactly as it was. Permissions are removed during archiving and may need to be granted again after restoration. Archiving is also not secure deletion: app data remains on the device.

Because the app’s executable software is removed, an archived app cannot run offline. Avoid archiving apps you need immediately for alerts or offline access, such as an authenticator, password manager, messaging app, alarm, health or security app, or an airline, transit, or navigation app before a trip with limited connectivity.
Which archiving feature is not working?
Android has two related but distinct archive mechanisms. Play Store automatic archiving chooses eligible apps when storage is low; Android 15 and later can also offer a manual Archive action in system settings. A fix for one may not affect the other.

| Play Store automatic archiving | Play Store > profile icon > Settings > General > Automatically archive apps | The setting must be enabled; storage must be low enough to prompt archiving; and the app must be eligible. Play’s automatic system is for apps distributed as Android App Bundles. |
| Android manual Archive | Settings > Apps > select an app > Archive | Google says some steps require Android 15 or later and supporting hardware. The phone maker may also move or omit the control. |
Menu wording and placement can vary by Play Store version, Android version, device maker, and region. If you cannot find the precise path, search Settings for “Archive” or “Manage app if unused,” then check the app’s App info screen. Not seeing Google’s exact menu does not, by itself, prove that no archive feature exists on your device.
Why is the Archive button missing?
For the manual system Archive control, check Android version, device support, and the type of app before changing Play Store data. Google’s help says some archive steps work only on Android 15 and up and some only on devices with supporting hardware.
- Check Android version. Open Settings > About phone and find the Android version. If the phone is below Android 15, the Android 15 Settings > Apps > Archive action is not available under Google’s documented requirements. This does not settle whether Play Store automatic archiving is available; it is a separate feature with different requirements.
- Check whether the device supports the action. Google notes that some steps need supporting hardware. If your phone runs Android 15 or later but the control is absent, ask the manufacturer whether that model supports app archiving.
- Check whether the app is preinstalled or critical to the system. Some default system components do not offer an Archive button. Examples reported by MakeUseOf include Chrome, WebView, and Camera. A user-installed app may be archivable even when a similar preinstalled app is not.
- Look in the manufacturer’s app-management screens. Android manufacturers can change menu names and locations. Check the app’s App info page and any device-care or app-management section, or search Settings. The exact OEM-specific location is not consistent across the information available here.
- Consider how the app was installed. Manual system archiving and Play’s store-level archiving are not identical. Sideloaded apps may not have a store available to handle restoration. Android 15’s OS-level archive can work with APK-installed apps, but restoring still depends on the installer of record and a source from which the app can be installed.
- Check available storage if the archive action fails rather than merely being absent. Archiving is intended to free space, but an operation can still be blocked when the phone is already extremely full. Free a small amount of internal storage and try again before moving on to more disruptive troubleshooting.
Google Help does not establish third-party cleaner apps, Play Protect, or a particular APK listing as universal reasons for a missing manual button. Treat those claims as unconfirmed rather than policy. Avoid installing a cleaner to solve an archive problem; aggressive cleanup can remove data you meant to retain.

Why does automatic archiving not happen?
Play Store automatic archiving is not an instant command to archive a chosen app. The setting allows Play to archive infrequently used eligible apps when the phone is running low on storage. If storage is not low, it may simply have no reason to act.
Recommended Free Tools
- Turn on the setting. Open Play Store > profile icon > Settings > General > Automatically archive apps. Enable the toggle if it is off. Names or placement may vary with the Play Store version.
- Check per-app management. Open Settings > Apps > choose the app and look for Manage app if unused. Google documents this control for exempting an individual app from automatic management: turn it off to prevent that app from being managed automatically. Conversely, if you want that app to be eligible for automatic archiving, make sure the per-app setting is not exempting it.
- Confirm that storage is actually low. The Play Store feature is designed to respond to low storage, not to archive apps as soon as the toggle is enabled. There is no published Google threshold in the supplied guidance that says exactly how little space must remain before it acts.
- Check app eligibility. Play auto-archive works with apps distributed as Android App Bundles. It does not cover every app installed on a phone. The Android 15 manual archive is a separate OS-level route and can work with APKs as well as App Bundles, subject to device support.
- Allow for the distinction between “unused” and “not currently open.” Automatic archiving targets infrequently used apps, not every app the owner would personally classify as unnecessary. Enabling the toggle does not let you choose a particular app and archive it immediately; use manual Archive when supported, or uninstall the app if you want it removed now.
Turning the automatic toggle off does not restore apps that were archived earlier. To bring one back, tap its faded icon or use one of the restore paths below.
How much storage does archiving save?
Google’s published claim is up to nearly 60% of an app’s storage, as reported from Google’s 2022–2023 announcements by Android Authority and other coverage. That is a maximum, not a guaranteed result or an archive-specific storage target. Independent examples have ranged from roughly half to more than 90% depending on the app and what its storage consists of.
| Published example | Before | After archiving | Reported reduction |
|---|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn — MakeUseOf, 2026 | 201 MB | 19 MB | About 90% |
| Telegram — MakeUseOf, 2026 | 175 MB | 87 MB | 50% |
| Facebook — MakeUseOf, 2026 | 1.02 GB | 308 MB | About 70% |
| X — MakeUseOf, 2026 | 387 MB | 144 MB | About 63% |
| Uber — Android Authority, 2024 | 387 MB | 17.64 MB | About 95.4% |
MakeUseOf reported a typical range of roughly 50–80% in one 2026 account, while its examples elsewhere included a 50% reduction for Telegram and about 70% for Facebook. These are reported app-specific observations, not a promise for your phone. MakeUseOf also reported about 6 GB reclaimed by archiving nearly 20 unused apps on a Pixel 10 Pro in 2026; that result belongs to that specific report and device.
The key question is what occupies the app’s storage. Archiving removes installed software and temporary files, but user data, offline maps, downloaded media, and separately stored game assets can remain. Open Settings > Apps > the app > Storage to see the breakdown on your device. If the app itself is the largest part, archiving may help substantially. If user data or offline downloads dominate, deleting those downloads or uninstalling the app may recover more space.

How do I restore or unarchive an app?
Restore requires a network connection, the original app store installed, the app still available to download from that store, and sufficient free internal storage. Google publishes no fixed number of gigabytes that guarantees a successful restore; its guidance is to manage storage if there is not enough room to reinstall the app.
- Tap the faded app icon on the home screen or in the app drawer. A cloud or download badge generally indicates the app is archived, and tapping the icon should start restoration.
- Use App info. Open Settings > Apps > select the archived app > Restore if that option is shown. On some devices, long-pressing the app icon and choosing App info (the “i” symbol) is a quicker route.
- Open the app’s Play Store listing. If the app remains available in the store, its details page may offer the restore or install action.
Restoring downloads the app again; MakeUseOf reported that the latest Play version is installed. Since archiving removes permissions, expect to grant any required permissions again. If the icon has disappeared entirely rather than appearing faded with a cloud badge, the app may have been uninstalled instead of archived.
What should I do if restore fails because storage is full?
Free space on internal storage first, then retry the restore. Google’s message is straightforward: “If your device doesn’t have enough storage to re-install the app, you’ll be asked to manage your storage.” Google does not specify a universal free-space floor for unarchiving.
- Delete or move a few large photos or videos that you have backed up or no longer need.
- Remove downloaded movies, music, podcasts, maps, or documents you can download again later.
- Clear temporary files, or clear an unusually large app cache if it is safe to regenerate. Prefer Clear cache over Clear storage or Clear data; clearing app data can sign you out or erase local information.
- If you still need space, uninstall one genuinely disposable app, taking care not to remove an app whose local data is important.
- Try restoring again from the faded icon, App info, or the app’s store listing.
AndroidHire’s 2026 summary of Google Play download guidance treats less than about 1 GB free, or a low-storage notification, as a warning sign for Play downloads generally. That is a practical heuristic, not a Google-published archive-specific requirement. A microSD card or USB-C flash drive usually does not supply the internal free space Play needs to reinstall an app package, so removable storage is not a dependable fix for a blocked restore.

Once you have enough internal space, check whether the app can still be downloaded from the store that originally handled it. An archive retains app data and an icon; it does not preserve a downloadable copy of the app’s software indefinitely.

- Check the app listing and region. If the developer removed the app or it is no longer available in your region, the original store may be unable to restore it. The retained icon cannot override that availability restriction.
- Check the connection and download settings. Connect to a working Wi-Fi network or an allowed mobile connection. If Play downloads are set to Wi-Fi only, a mobile connection will not help until that preference is changed or Wi-Fi is available.
- Clear a stuck download queue. In Play Store, open the profile menu and go to Manage apps and device. Cancel a stalled download or update, then retry the archived app.
- Check date and time. Set date and time automatically in Android settings; an incorrect clock can interfere with store downloads.
- Restart and update. Restart the phone, then check for a Play Store update at Play Store > profile icon > Settings > About > Play Store version. Also install available Android system updates where practical.
- Clear Play Store cache first. In Android Settings > Apps > Google Play Store > Storage, clear the cache, then retry. If that does not work, clearing Play Store storage/data is a more disruptive next step; it can reset settings such as parental controls and purchase PIN preferences.
- Leave Google Play services data as a last resort. Clear its cache before considering storage/data. AndroidHire’s 2026 guidance, citing Google, warns that clearing Play services storage can remove Wallet passwords, transit cards, and virtual payment cards. Do not do this casually.
If the original installation was sideloaded, there may be no Play Store installer of record to handle restoration. Android 15’s OS-level archive supports APKs, but that does not mean Play can reinstall an app it never distributed. Use only a legitimate source you already have a right to use; if no valid installation source remains, the archived data stub may be stranded.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How is archiving different from uninstalling, disabling, or clearing cache?
Choose based on what you want to keep. Archiving removes the app software but retains its icon and data; uninstalling removes the app and ordinarily its local app data; disabling leaves a system app installed but prevents it from running; clearing cache removes temporary files without removing the app.
| Action | What it removes or changes | Does data remain? | Can you use the app immediately? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Archive | App software, permissions, temporary files; notifications stop | Google says app data and icon remain, though individual local items are not guaranteed to return | No. Download the software again to restore it. |
| Uninstall | Removes the app; it is not a reversible archive stub | Local data may be removed, depending on the app and its backups | No. Reinstall the app and recover or recreate data as available. |
| Disable | Prevents a supported installed app, often a preinstalled component, from running | Generally remains installed on the device | No, until enabled again. |
| Clear cache | Temporary cached files only | App data remains | Usually yes; the app may need to rebuild cached files. |
Use Archive when you want to reclaim software space but keep a route back to the app and its retained data. Use uninstall when you want the app gone and do not need its local data. Use Clear cache for a modest cleanup when temporary files are the problem; it will not remove the app. Disabling is mainly useful for supported preinstalled apps, not a general storage strategy.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I leave some apps out of automatic archiving?
Yes, if an app must be available immediately, send alerts, or hold information you need offline. In Settings > Apps > choose the app, turn off Manage app if unused to exempt it from automatic management. Google documents this per-app control.
Consider exempting authenticator and password apps, messaging services, alarms, health and security tools, smart-home controls, and travel apps that contain boarding passes, transit access, or offline navigation. Automatic archiving stops notifications while an app is archived, and restoration requires a connection and a successful download. Those conditions can matter more than the storage saved.

Does the Android 15 Archive feature work on APK apps?
Android 15’s OS-level manual archive can work with APK-installed apps as well as apps distributed through Android App Bundles, according to Android Authority’s reporting on Google’s feature. Play Store automatic archiving is narrower: it depends on Android App Bundles because Play supplies an archived stub for eligible apps.
The distinction matters if an app was installed outside Play. Manual OS archiving may remove its installation files while keeping an icon and data, but restoration still requires a suitable installer or source. An APK archive is not a backup of the app’s original installer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat are the safest fixes to try first?
Use the least disruptive check that matches the failure. Do not clear app data or Google Play services storage before checking version, settings, eligibility, connection, and free space.
- No Archive button: confirm Android version, check the app is not a critical preinstalled component, and search the manufacturer’s App info or device-care menus.
- Automatic archiving is idle: enable Automatically archive apps, check Manage app if unused for the specific app, confirm storage is low, and remember that Play’s feature only supports eligible App Bundle apps.
- Restore does nothing: connect to the internet, confirm the app is still in its original store, free internal storage, tap the faded icon, and clear the Play download queue if it is stuck.
- Play download still fails: restart, set date and time automatically, update Play Store, clear Play Store cache, and only then consider clearing Play Store data.
- Last resort: investigate Play services cache before any data clearing. Be aware that Play services storage cleanup can affect saved payment and transit credentials.
Google’s official requirements are the strongest guide for the archive and restore steps: Android 15 and supporting hardware may be required for some features; the app store must be installed; the app must remain available to download; and the phone must have enough storage. Exact OEM menus and a numeric storage floor are not established by those requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will an archived app reinstall for free?
The research briefing reports that free apps restore without charge and previously purchased paid apps should not require a second purchase. That billing detail is secondary guidance rather than a specific Google Play Help guarantee, and a lapsed subscription may limit access after the app returns.
Can I archive an app right before a flight or trip?
It is risky if you will need the app offline or cannot reliably get online. Archive can stop alerts, and restoring requires downloading the software again; keep travel, transit, boarding-pass, and navigation apps available until you no longer need them.
Does turning off automatic archiving bring back apps already archived?
No. The toggle controls whether Play may archive eligible apps in the future; it does not reverse an archive that already happened. Restore an existing archived app from its icon, App info, or its store listing.
Can archiving securely erase an app’s private information?
No. Archiving is designed to retain app data for a possible return, so it should not be treated as a privacy wipe or secure deletion. If your goal is to remove local information, review the app’s own account and data controls before uninstalling.
