Google Photos uploads supported photos and videos to the Google Account selected for Backup, not automatically every file on every device. On Android, you can also include screenshots, downloads, messaging-app media, and other device folders. Google says backed-up items are private and visible only to you on signed-in devices unless you share them, but shared albums, links, Partner Sharing, and copies saved by recipients create separate access paths.
To know exactly what is online, check the backup account, folder switches, quality setting, item backup status, and sharing controls. Google’s product documentation describes default visibility and sharing behavior; it does not establish how Google itself may process or access content.

What gets uploaded when Google Photos Backup is on?
Backup sends supported photos and videos to the Google Account chosen in Google Photos. An item must meet Google’s supported type and size limits, and Backup must be enabled; simply having a file on a phone or computer does not guarantee that it was uploaded.
Google lists these limits on its Backup and restore help page:

| Requirement | What Google documents |
|---|---|
| Photo size | Up to 200 MB or 200 megapixels |
| Video size | Up to 10 GB |
| Minimum dimensions | Larger than 256 × 256 pixels |
| Common supported photo types | JPG, HEIC/HEIF, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, and most RAW files |
| Video types | Google publishes a supported-format list; unsupported formats may not back up |
Those limits describe eligibility, not proof that an upload completed. Open the item’s backup details and confirm that it has finished uploading before deleting a local original. The destination account matters too: the account selected for Backup is where the cloud copy is stored.
Does Google Photos back up screenshots, downloads, and messaging-app images?
On Android phones and tablets, Google Photos can back up selected folders from other apps and devices in addition to the camera folder. That includes folders commonly used for screenshots, downloads, screen recordings, and messaging-app media, but only when their folder switch is enabled.

In Google Photos, use the On this device area to find local folders, then review the device-folder backup controls. You can enable individual folders or turn on Back up all device folders. With the all-folders setting active, new device folders are automatically included, so a folder that was not present when you first configured Backup can become part of the upload scope later.
The cited folder controls are specific to Android phones and tablets. Do not assume that the same folder selector or automatic-folder behavior applies to iPhone, iPad, or desktop versions. On every platform, verify the actual Backup status and the account shown in the app rather than inferring coverage from where a file is stored.
Which Google Photos backup quality should you choose?
Google offers Original quality, Storage saver, and Express where Express is available. The right choice depends on whether preserving every pixel or conserving shared account storage matters more.

| Setting | What happens to files | Storage implication |
|---|---|---|
| Original quality | Keeps the captured resolution. | Counts against Google Account storage. |
| Storage saver | Compresses some files. Photos above 16 megapixels are resized to 16 megapixels; videos above 1080p are resized to 1080p. Google says some items may not be compressed, and video resizing can remove image information such as captions. | Uses less space than Original quality, but still counts under the current policy. |
| Express | Where offered, photos above 3 megapixels may be resized to 3 megapixels and videos above 480p to 480p. | Designed for lower storage and bandwidth use; availability varies by region. |
If a photograph must remain suitable for large prints, editing, or archival use, inspect its backup details after upload instead of assuming the setting preserved full resolution. Google documents the options and compression behavior at Choose the backup quality of your photos & videos.

How much storage does Google Photos use, and what happens when it is full?
Each Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage shared by Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos, according to Google’s current activity and storage documentation. Current Storage saver and Original quality backups count toward that shared quota. Express uploads also follow the policy shown for the account and region.
Google says older uploads made in High quality (now called Storage saver) or Express before June 1, 2021 are treated differently under its stated policy. Do not use the old name or date as a guarantee for a particular item; check the account’s storage details for what is currently counted.
When the account is full, new photos and videos cannot be saved. Google also warns that content may be deleted after two or more years over the storage limit. You can manage storage or purchase more capacity, but increasing the quota does not by itself verify that missing items were ever uploaded. The current policy is described at About your Google Photos activity & storage.
Are my Google Photos private by default?
Yes, in the product-visibility sense Google documents: “Your backed-up photos and videos are private and viewable only by you on your signed-in devices unless shared.” That default applies to the Photos library associated with your account; it does not make a shared item private again automatically.

This statement should not be expanded into a claim about Google’s internal access, advertising use, or artificial-intelligence training. The help pages cited here explain account visibility and sharing controls, not every way a service provider may process stored content.
Can someone see a photo after I add it to a shared album?
Yes. Shared albums have two different access mechanisms: named Google Account users and link sharing. Album owners can add or remove named people and can turn link sharing on or off.
A shared link is not guessable, but once you create it, a recipient can pass that link to another person. If link sharing remains on, removing an individual named user does not stop someone who has the original link from viewing the album. To make an album private again, remove collaborators and turn link sharing off, following Google’s controls described at How shared album controls give your photos more privacy.
Sharing an album also differs from handing over a file outside Google Photos. The album’s current visibility can be changed by the owner, while a person who has already downloaded or otherwise saved a separate copy controls that copy independently.

How is Partner Sharing different from a shared album?
Partner Sharing can automatically send selected backed-up photos to one partner account instead of requiring the owner to add each item to an album. The setup can use a start date and either all photos or selected face groups.

Selected-person sharing is unavailable in some regions. Google also cautions that face-group matching can occasionally include photos without the selected person, so review the scope before relying on it for sensitive material. The feature and its regional limitations are documented at Set up partner sharing.
The most important retention rule is on the recipient’s side: if the partner saves a photo to their own account, that saved copy remains if the owner later edits or deletes the original, or moves the owner’s copy to Locked Folder. Changing the owner’s library therefore cannot retract a copy that the recipient has saved.
What happens when I move a photo to Locked Folder?
Locked Folder removes items from the Photos grid, search, albums, memories, and normal sharing surfaces. It is a hiding and access-control feature, not a promise that no other copy exists.

- Backup is optional. An item that is not backed up remains only on that device and may be lost if the device is damaged or lost, Photos data is cleared, or the app is uninstalled.
- Backed-up Locked Folder items count toward Google Account storage.
- Moving an item moves the original only. Copies or edited versions elsewhere can remain visible or shared.
- Google says Locked Folder uses its standard encryption practices; the cited documentation does not claim end-to-end encryption.
Review the backup switch and search for duplicate versions before treating Locked Folder as a complete privacy or recovery plan. Google’s documented behavior is at Hide sensitive photos & videos in Locked Folders.
How long does Google keep photos in an inactive or over-quota account?
Google’s current help guidance says photos and videos may be deleted after two or more years of Photos inactivity. For an inactivity-based deletion, Google says it will email at least three months before possible deletion and allow the user to download data to a computer.

Separate from inactivity, Google warns that content may be deleted after two or more years over the storage limit. These are account-policy risks, not a promise that every account will be deleted on exactly a particular day. If a collection must survive an account, service, or device problem, keep an independent local copy in addition to the cloud copy. Google documents downloading to a computer; a portable external drive is one general-purpose way to hold a second copy after export.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I audit what is uploaded and who can see it?
Use this review whenever you set up a new phone, change accounts, or prepare to remove local files:
- Confirm the destination account. In Google Photos, open the account and Backup settings and verify the Google Account selected for uploads.
- Check completion. Inspect individual photos and videos for their backup status or details; do not rely only on the fact that the thumbnail appears on the device.
- Review Android folders. In On this device, inspect every folder switch and determine whether Back up all device folders is enabled.
- Choose quality deliberately. Check whether the account uses Original quality, Storage saver, or Express, and inspect an important item to confirm the resulting resolution.
- Inspect sharing. Review shared albums, named collaborators, link sharing, and Partner Sharing. Turn off links and remove collaborators when an album should no longer be accessible.
- Check sensitive items. For Locked Folder, verify the device screen-lock exposure, backup choice, and existence of copies or edits outside the folder.
- Protect recovery. Export irreplaceable material to a computer and maintain an independent copy before relying on the account as the only archive.
Which setup fits your privacy, quality, and recovery priorities?
| Priority | Configuration to review | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Camera photos only | Keep Android device-folder switches limited to the camera folder. | Other folders, including screenshots, will not be included unless enabled. |
| Everything on an Android device | Use Back up all device folders and periodically inspect newly created folders. | Unexpected app media can enter the library and consume quota. |
| Maximum captured resolution | Use Original quality and monitor shared storage. | Storage fills sooner than with compressed options. |
| Lower storage use | Use Storage saver, or Express where available. | Resizing or compression can reduce editing and print flexibility. |
| Limited audience sharing | Use named album recipients and keep link sharing off. | Recipients can still save separate copies. |
| Hidden sensitive items | Use Locked Folder, choose backup deliberately, and remove duplicates elsewhere. | Device-lock holders may access it, and unbacked items lack cloud recovery. |
| Account-independent recovery | Keep a downloaded local copy in addition to Google Photos. | Requires your own export and storage maintenance. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I back up the same phone to two Google Accounts at once?
Google says one Google Account can be used for Backup at a time. If you need a second account copy, download or export the material and upload it separately rather than assuming both accounts are receiving the live device backup.
How do I find an Android folder before deciding whether to include it?
Open Google Photos and use the On this device view to locate local folders, including app-specific directories that may not appear in the camera view. Check each folder’s backup switch before enabling the all-folders option, because future folders can then enter the upload scope automatically.
Can face-based Partner Sharing include the wrong person?
It can: Google cautions that face-group matching may occasionally include photos without the selected person. Treat the face-group choice as an automated filter, review what is being shared, and use a narrower manual method for material that cannot tolerate an incorrect match.
What should I do before leaving an account unused for a long time?
Download important photos and videos to a computer, keep a second copy on separate storage, and make sure the account can receive Google’s warning emails. This gives you a recovery path if inactivity or a prolonged storage overage eventually puts the cloud collection at risk.
