Google Messages beta bug adds two app icons to your launcher

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A bug reported in Google Messages beta has been causing two extra app icons to appear on an Android device’s launcher. The icons look like additional copies of Messages, but they usually aren’t “new apps”—they’re duplicate launcher shortcuts or package component entries created during an update.

This guide walks you through reliable fixes, from removing the duplicates to clearing launcher-related data, updating or rolling back Messages, and handling edge cases like work profiles and dual apps. Follow the steps in order; you should be able to resolve it without affecting your message history.

Note: I’m assuming you’re seeing the problem on your home screen/app drawer after installing or updating Google Messages from the beta channel.

What the Google Messages beta bug is doing

Google Messages beta updates can change how the app registers launcher entries (the components Android uses to show icons). In some builds, Messages ends up exposing multiple launcher-visible components that the launcher interprets as separate icons. The result is typically two extra icons added to the launcher while the app itself remains one install.

  • Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
  • Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time
  • Use one of the many other NCH multimedia applications that are integrated with MixPad.

Depending on your launcher, those icons may be removable like normal shortcuts, or they may appear to “stick” and reappear after a restart.

Who’s affected and what to look for

You’ll most often notice this when you:

  • Install Google Messages from the Play Store beta program
  • Update from one beta version to another
  • Change launchers, apply an icon pack, or switch theme engines

Check what exactly you’re seeing:

  • Two new icons referencing Google Messages
  • Icons that open Messages but may land on different screens (sometimes straight to “Compose” or a “Messages” entry point)
  • Icons that reappear after reboot or app update

If you want to collect evidence for a future report, note your Android version (e.g., Android 14 / 15) and the Messages app version number from Settings > Apps > Messages > App details.

Quick checks before you change anything

Before clearing anything, do a couple of low-risk checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Apps > Messages (or Settings > Apps & notifications).
  2. Confirm you only have one install of Google Messages.
  3. Long-press each “duplicate” icon and see if it offers App info. If it takes you to the same app details screen, this is almost certainly a launcher/shortcut registration issue, not two separate installs.

If the two icons show different app info pages or different app package names, you may be dealing with a separate app (for example, an OEM messaging app, a “Messages for Web” launcher shortcut, or a dual app profile).

Fix #1: Remove the duplicate icons from your launcher

Start with the simplest method. Most launchers treat these entries as normal shortcuts.

  1. Go to the home screen/app drawer.
  2. Long-press the duplicate Messages icon.
  3. Select Remove, Uninstall (if shown), or Remove shortcut.
  4. Repeat for the second duplicate.

If the launcher shows Uninstall for that icon, stop and don’t uninstall unless you’re sure. Use App info to verify it’s the same Google Messages entry you want to keep.

Fix #2: Restart launcher and refresh app shortcuts

Many times, the icons persist only because the launcher cache hasn’t refreshed after the beta update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Long-press an empty area on the home screen and open Home settings (wording varies).
  2. Or open Settings > Apps > choose your launcher app (e.g., Pixel Launcher, One UI Home, Microsoft Launcher).
  3. Tap Force stop.
  4. Tap Open to restart it.

Then check whether the duplicates are still visible. If they’re gone, you’re done.

Features: Completely free.

Fix #3: Clear Messages beta shortcut data (without losing chats)

This targets local app data related to launcher entries/shortcuts. It should not delete your message history because SMS/RCS content is stored in your device’s messaging provider and/or Google’s service backend—but clearing app data can be disruptive, so keep this controlled.

Do not use Clear data unless you’re prepared to reconfigure the app.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Messages.
  2. Go to Storage.
  3. Try Clear cache first.
  4. If you still see duplicates, look for Clear storage or additional storage options. Prefer Clear cache only, and skip Clear data unless advised below.

If you must clear more aggressively, do it only after you’ve confirmed the duplicates are tied to icon entries and not a mistaken install. Clearing data typically forces sign-in/verification and may reset app settings, not your SMS history, but it’s still a “last resort” for stability.

Fix #4: Update or roll back Google Messages beta

Because this is a beta-specific bug, the most durable fix is getting onto a build where Google has corrected launcher registration. If you can’t wait, rolling back to stable often removes the broken component entries.

Update to the latest beta

Updating is the safest rollback-to-fix approach.

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Google Messages.
  3. Scroll to the app listing and check that you’re on a newer beta version than the one you updated from.
  4. Hit Update if available.

After updating, restart the launcher (Fix #2) and check if the two icons persist.

Leave the beta and restore the stable app

If the duplicates are annoying (or keep reappearing), exiting the beta channel is often the cleanest solution.

  1. Open Google Play Store > Google Messages listing.
  2. Scroll to the beta area (it may show Beta with a label like Joined).
  3. Tap Leave / Leave the beta.
  4. Wait for the Play Store to switch tracks.
  5. Install the stable update when prompted.

Then remove duplicates again. On many devices, stable builds register a single launcher entry for the Messages main activity.

Side effects of rolling back

  • Beta features may disappear until you rejoin the beta.
  • If you cleared data, you may need to re-enable permissions.
  • RCS/Chat features can require re-verification depending on the build transition.

Fix #5: If you use a work profile or dual apps

Some devices show multiple app icons when the same app exists in different profiles (personal/work) or “dual apps” modes (common on Samsung and some OEM skins).

  • Load an audio file and export to all popular audio formats from studio quality wav to high compression formats
  1. Check whether you have a Work profile in Settings.
  2. Open Settings > Accounts / Users (wording varies) and confirm whether Messages is installed in both contexts.
  3. If you enabled Dual apps, verify whether Messages appears twice by design.

If the icons open different profiles, removing both might be necessary only if you don’t want one profile’s shortcut.

Fix #6: Handle launcher-specific behavior

Some launchers hide the difference between shortcuts and launcher entries, which is why the same fix doesn’t always work everywhere.

Pixel Launcher (Android 14/15)

Pixel Launcher generally treats these as standard launcher shortcuts, but the duplicates can return until the launcher cache refreshes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Remove both icons via long-press > Remove.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Pixel Launcher > Storage > Clear cache.
  3. Reboot, then confirm icons don’t come back.

Samsung One UI Launcher

One UI often re-creates missing icons after a system UI update or app update.

  1. Long-press icon > Remove from Home screen (if shown).
  2. Open Settings > Apps > One UI Home > Force stop.
  3. Optionally: Settings > Apps > One UI Home > Storage > Clear cache.

Microsoft Launcher

Microsoft Launcher can keep its own shortcut index.

  1. Remove the duplicate shortcuts.
  2. Open Microsoft Launcher settings (app info can vary by build).
  3. Disable and re-enable icon/shortcut sync features if your version offers them.

Nova Launcher

Nova supports backup/restore and icon packs, which can reintroduce stale entries.

  1. Remove the duplicates.
  2. Check Nova settings for Icon packs and temporarily switch to the default icon set.
  3. Restart the launcher (Nova has a restart option in some versions).

Third-party launchers (general approach)

For less common launchers, the pattern is the same: clear launcher cache or restart the launcher process, then remove duplicates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Long-press duplicates > Remove.
  2. Force stop your launcher app.
  3. Clear launcher cache if available.

Prevent it going forward

Once you fix the immediate issue, you want to avoid repeated reappearance after every beta update.

Prefer stable if you don’t need beta features

If you’re not testing Messages features, staying on stable reduces icon registry issues. Google Messages is updated frequently; stable builds tend to receive fixes faster once they’re verified.

Watch for icon packs and shortcut managers

Icon packs and shortcut tools can map launcher entries differently. If you applied an icon pack, try switching back to defaults and see if the duplicates stop.

Report the bug with useful details

When you report, include:

  • Android version and device model
  • Google Messages beta version number
  • Exact behavior (two extra icons, whether they reappear after reboot)
  • Launcher name/version (Pixel Launcher, One UI Home, Nova, etc.)

Use the Google Play Store “Send feedback” flow for the beta app when possible. If you can reproduce it consistently, include steps like “After updating to beta version X, duplicates appear within 5 minutes.”

Troubleshooting: When fixes don’t work

If the duplicates keep returning, you likely have a cache/launcher index issue or a stubborn component entry from the beta build.

Icons keep coming back after every reboot

  1. Update Google Messages beta to the latest build (Fix #4).
  2. If it still returns, leave beta and install stable.
  3. Clear launcher cache (Fix #2/launcher-specific section).

Only one icon can be removed

Some launchers treat one entry as a pinned shortcut and the other as a true launcher component. If removal fails:

  1. Remove any pinned shortcuts related to Messages.
  2. Restart launcher / clear launcher cache.
  3. Rollback Messages beta to stable if the second entry keeps returning.

Shortcuts open the wrong Messages instance

If one icon opens a different compose flow or a different profile, it may be tied to a specific activity entry.

  1. Tap each icon and then go to Messages > App info from that context.
  2. Confirm they map to the same package.
  3. If it’s a work profile issue, disable the duplicate profile shortcut or uninstall Messages from that profile (if you don’t need it).

Launcher is stuck showing phantom icons

Phantom icons can happen when launcher indexes get out of sync after app updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Force stop the launcher.
  2. Clear launcher cache.
  3. Reboot.
  4. If still present, reinstalling the launcher app updates can help on some devices.

Comparisons: Duplicate icons vs real app duplication

It’s easy to assume you installed two copies of Messages. Usually, you didn’t. The bug is about launcher entries, not about installing multiple packages.

What you see Most likely cause What to do
Two icons both open Messages Duplicate launcher entry/components from Messages beta Remove icons, restart/clear launcher cache, update or leave beta
Icons show different app info screens Another messaging app, work profile install, or OEM messaging entry Verify package names in App info; uninstall/disable the unwanted one
Icons reappear instantly after removal Launcher index rebuild tied to the beta build’s registered components Leave beta, install stable, then remove duplicates again

FAQ

Does the Google Messages beta bug delete my messages?

No. The issue is about launcher icons. Avoid “Clear data” unless you accept the app may need reconfiguration. Your SMS/RCS message history shouldn’t be deleted by normal cache clearing.

Will updating Google Messages beta fix it?

Often yes. Beta builds get patched, and fixes for launcher registration are typically delivered via the next Play Store beta update.

Is it safe to leave the beta?

Yes, in most cases. You’ll switch back to the stable channel. You may lose access to beta-only features, and you could need RCS re-verification depending on your setup.

Why do some launchers show two icons even after removal?

If Messages beta registers multiple launcher-visible components, the launcher may re-index them when the app updates or when the launcher refreshes its cache. Clearing launcher cache and rolling back to stable usually stops the reappearance.

Should I uninstall Google Messages?

Only as a last resort. Uninstalling removes the messaging app and can disrupt SMS/RCS access until reinstalled. Fixing icons is typically achievable by launcher refresh and switching off the problematic beta build.

Bottom Line

The Google Messages beta bug that adds two extra icons is usually a launcher registration/cache issue triggered by a specific beta build—not a sign you installed duplicate messaging apps.

Remove duplicates, restart/clear your launcher cache, then update or exit the beta if they keep returning. If you want the cleanest long-term result, leaving beta and installing stable is the most reliable fix.
