Google Keep tests floating bottom bar or a new FAB

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Keep occasionally runs UI experiments, and one of the most common targets is the quick action area: a floating bottom bar or a new floating action button (FAB). If you’ve noticed your buttons “move,” “float,” or behave differently after an update, you’re likely seeing a staged test rather than a permanent redesign.

This guide shows you how to confirm what’s happening on your device, what the floating bottom bar or FAB usually changes, and what to do when the new layout makes tapping, searching, or editing less comfortable.

What Google Keep is testing: floating bottom bar and FAB

Keep’s UI experiments typically aim to reduce the distance between your thumb and the actions you use most (like creating a note, switching views, or opening search). Two patterns show up in these tests:

Floating bottom bar

Instead of a fully anchored bottom navigation area, you may see a bar that looks “floating” above content—often with a shadow, rounded container, or partial overlap—so it stays visible while you scroll or browse notes.

New FAB (floating action button)

A FAB is usually a circular button that performs a primary action (most often “Create” or “Add”). The FAB can relocate between screens (notes list vs. editor) and may appear/disappear depending on your context.

Why this change matters

Even small UI control changes affect speed and accuracy. A bottom control that floats above content can improve one-handed use, but it can also cover parts of a note, especially on devices with smaller screens or aggressive display scaling.

FAB experiments also matter because the “primary action” is often the fastest route to capture. If the FAB lands in a new position or overlaps important controls (like tags, titles, or checkboxes), you’ll feel it immediately in daily use.

Before you try: prerequisites and what to check

You don’t need anything special, but a few checks will prevent false conclusions.

Confirm your current setup

  • Android vs. iPhone/iPad: Most FAB/bottom bar UI changes appear first on Android due to Play rollout patterns.
  • Google Keep version: Open Play Store (or the App Store on iOS) and check the installed version if shown.
  • Display size: If you use large font scaling or high display size, floating controls are more likely to overlap content.
  • Accessibility: Settings like Magnification, Display size, or large touch targets can shift layouts.

Know what “test behavior” looks like

  • Buttons appear only on some screens (notes list) but not others (note editor).
  • The new control appears after an update but disappears after clearing cache or switching accounts.
  • UI differs between devices using the same Google account.

How to verify whether you’re seeing the test

Use a quick verification routine that isolates whether you’re seeing an A/B test, a per-account experiment, or simply a rollout update.

Step-by-step check

  1. Open Google Keep and go to the notes list view (don’t open a specific note yet).
  2. Look for a FAB (often labeled only by behavior, not text) and note its position (bottom-right is common).
  3. Scroll down through your notes. Check whether the bottom bar is anchored or floating above content.
  4. Open a note and check whether the FAB changes behavior (for example: disappears, moves, or changes function).
  5. Return to the notes list. Confirm whether the floating bar/FAB returns immediately or after a transition.

Cross-device confirmation

If you have another device (another Android phone, tablet, or iPhone/iPad), compare behavior on the same Google account. Experiments often roll out differently, so one device may show the new floating controls while another stays on the older layout.

How to enable access to Google Keep updates (Android)

Android rollout timing can make the difference between “I see it” and “I don’t.” These are the most practical ways to reach the version where the test appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Option 1: Install via Google Play and wait for staged rollout

Google Play uses staged rollouts, so not everyone gets the UI at the same time. If your version hasn’t changed, the floating bar/FAB test may simply not have reached your cohort yet.

  1. Open Play Store → search Google Keep.
  2. If you see Update, install it.
  3. If you don’t see an update, go to the app page again later (or after restarting your phone).

Option 2: Join Google Play beta for Google Keep

Beta builds are more likely to contain UI experiments, including floating controls. You’ll also see more bugs, so treat it like a tradeoff.

  1. Open Play Store → search Google Keep.
  2. Scroll to the app’s Join the beta or Become a beta tester section.
  3. Confirm enrollment and wait for the beta update to install.
  4. After trying the floating bar/FAB, you can leave beta from the same page if the layout causes issues.

Option 3: Check device language, DPI, and accessibility settings

Some UI experiments become more visible only when display metrics change. If you recently updated font size, display size, or accessibility, that can trigger a different layout path.

  1. Open Android Settings → Display.
  2. Check Display size and Font size. Note if they’re significantly higher than default.
  3. Return to Keep and repeat the verification steps.

How the floating bottom bar and FAB typically work

While exact labels can change, the patterns are consistent across experiments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Floating bottom bar behavior to look for

  • Overlap: it may sit above scrolling content, sometimes obscuring the lowest lines of a note.
  • Visibility rules: it may fade or reposition when you open a note or start editing.
  • Touch targets: taps should still be accurate, but overlapping UI can increase mis-taps.

FAB behavior to look for

  • Primary action: typically “Create” a new note.
  • Context changes: FAB may shrink, disappear, or change function when you enter edit mode.
  • Animation: transitions often happen during navigation; if you experience lag, it can feel like the FAB is “stuck.”

Best practices while the UI is in flux

When an app is testing controls, the goal is to keep your capture and editing workflow fast—even if the layout isn’t yet second nature.

Compose, search, and pin without breaking flow

  • Use search first when you need accuracy; UI changes can temporarily affect quick taps.
  • If your FAB creates the wrong type of note, check whether Keep is showing a shortcut menu or a last-used default.
  • Pin notes you touch often so you’re not dependent on frequent “add” gestures.

Gestures and accidental taps

Floating controls are closer to your thumb, which can be good—but it also increases accidental taps while scrolling.

  • Pause scroll briefly before tapping near the bottom-right (where FABs commonly live).
  • If the floating bar overlaps the note list, try turning off high contrast or display scaling temporarily to test whether layout is the real problem.

One-handed use and screen size differences

On taller phones, a floating bar can remain comfortably out of the way. On smaller displays, it may cover the last few rows of note text or checkboxes. That’s not you—it’s layout math changing under different experiments.

Troubleshooting when the test causes problems

If the new floating bottom bar or FAB is causing practical issues, handle it in the most direct order: check overlays, clear cache, update, then escalate to beta/stable switching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom bar won’t stay put or flickers

  1. Force stop the app: Settings → Apps → Google Keep → Force stop.
  2. Update Keep via Play Store (or confirm you’re on the latest beta).
  3. Re-check screen recording/mirroring apps and accessibility overlays; overlays can trigger redraw issues.
  4. Restart the phone and test again.

FAB overlaps notes or edit controls

  • Try reducing Display size and Font size by one step.
  • Open a note, rotate the device (portrait/landscape), then rotate back and see if the layout recalculates.
  • If it’s only happening on one device, compare with another device running the same Keep version.

Buttons don’t respond after an update

  1. Clear cache: Settings → Apps → Google Keep → Storage → Clear cache.
  2. Don’t clear data unless you’ve confirmed you can sign back in easily—data clearing can require reconfiguration and may remove local state.
  3. Test after reopening Keep and waiting 30 seconds (some UI assets preload).

Search and keyboard conflict

If opening search or the keyboard causes the floating controls to jump, it can be a window-inset issue. Try:

  • Switch keyboards (temporarily) if you use a third-party one.
  • Disable any “floating keyboard” or “assistive touch” overlay features.
  • Update Google Keep and your Android System WebView (if prompted by your OEM).

Crash or black screen after UI change

  1. Uninstall/reinstall Keep (the cleanest reset when UI components fail).
  2. If you’re on beta, switch back to stable by leaving beta.
  3. After reinstalling, sign in and test on Wi-Fi first.

Rolling back or reducing impact

UI experiments can feel worse than they sound. If the floating bar/FAB changes make Keep less usable, use these rollback-style options.

Leave beta and wait for the stable version

  1. Open Play Store → Google Keep.
  2. Go to You are a beta tester → select Leave the beta.
  3. Wait for the stable update to download and install.

Clear cache vs. data (and what you’ll lose)

Clear cache is low-risk and often fixes UI redraw problems. Clear data is higher-risk because it can reset app state and log you out depending on your setup.

Alternatives if Google Keep’s new controls are hard to use

If you need a working workflow now—while Keep tests the floating bar/FAB—switch temporarily to other capture or viewing paths.

Use the “web view” flow across devices

When the mobile UI feels off, use Google Keep in a browser to create and edit notes. It won’t depend on the exact floating layout, and it keeps your data consistent.

Pin important notes and reduce reliance on quick-create gestures

Pinning won’t fix the UI, but it reduces how often you must tap the floating controls. This is especially helpful while the experiment is still rolling out.

Switch capture method temporarily

If your primary complaint is creating notes too easily by accident, use voice capture or copy/paste from another app instead, then refine on the editor screen where controls are usually more stable.

FAQ about Google Keep’s floating bottom bar and FAB

Is the floating bottom bar a permanent redesign?

Not necessarily. UI experiments are often tested with specific cohorts and can be rolled back or refined. If it feels unstable, it’s reasonable to assume it’s part of a test.

Why do I see it on one device but not another?

Staged rollouts and beta enrollment can differ by device, OS version, and even rollout cohort timing. The same account doesn’t guarantee the same UI simultaneously.

What should I do if the FAB overlaps checkboxes or text?

Try reducing Display size/Font size, updating Keep, and clearing cache. If it persists, leaving beta (if you’re enrolled) is often the fastest route back to a stable layout.

Does this affect data safety or note syncing?

UI experiments shouldn’t change note syncing or data storage behavior. Still, if you encounter crashes, keep testing after reinstalling and ensure you can open your notes after signing back in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

If Google Keep tests a floating bottom bar or a new FAB on your phone, treat it like a normal staged UI experiment: verify by comparing screens and devices, then adjust your setup (display size, overlays) if the controls interfere with taps.

When it genuinely breaks your workflow—flicker, overlap, or unresponsive buttons—use cache clearing, beta/stable switching, or a temporary web workflow until the experiment stabilizes.
