Choose Google Cloud Data Agent Kit for data work in an IDE or coding agent; choose Google’s agent-building path when your deliverable is an AI agent that needs to be built, deployed, governed, evaluated, or monitored. They address different parts of a project and are not automatic substitutes. Google’s product names have also changed, so this comparison distinguishes Data Agent Kit from the Agent Builder and Agent Platform surfaces described in Google’s documentation.
The short answer: data workflow or AI agent?
The deciding question is what you are trying to produce. If the work is centered on finding and using Google Cloud data—exploring assets, writing SQL or Python, developing pipelines, or carrying out data and ML work—Data Agent Kit is the more focused fit. Its IDE extension and coding-agent plugin provide ways to work with Google Cloud data services from development tools.

If the deliverable is an AI agent that reasons with tools, automates a workflow, and must be operated beyond local development, use the relevant Google agent-building path. Google’s documentation describes options spanning low-code development, custom code, managed deployment and runtime, and capabilities for governance, evaluation, and observability.
These needs can overlap. An agent may use Google Cloud data, while Data Agent Kit may support agentic skills in data workflows. That overlap is a distinction between capabilities, not evidence that the products interoperate automatically. Confirm the integration path for your design rather than assuming one product invokes or manages the other.

Google Cloud Data Agent Kit
Data Agent Kit is aimed at data scientists, data engineers, and data app developers. The Google Cloud Data Agent Kit overview describes an IDE extension that gives users a unified view of data assets and workloads in VS Code or compatible IDEs, as well as a plugin for working with Google Cloud data through supported coding agents.
Documented work includes data discovery and exploration, asking questions in natural language, Python and SQL analysis, building and deploying data pipelines, AI/ML work, and agentic skills. In practical terms, it is a data-workflow surface: it helps a practitioner work with cloud data and workloads from a development environment. It is not described as the complete lifecycle platform for deploying, governing, and observing arbitrary AI agents.

Google’s Vertex AI Agent Builder overview describes an agent-building route, including building with the Agent Development Kit (ADK) or another open-source framework and using Agent Engine for managed deployment and operation. The page also describes tools such as search, code execution, retrieval, cloud integrations, and MCP.
Google’s newer Agent Platform overview and Agents overview describe a broader platform surface: low-code Agent Studio, custom-code ADK, managed agent APIs, runtime, sessions, memory, governance, evaluation, and observability. Those capabilities matter when a project must move from an agent prototype into managed operation and oversight.

The table summarizes different scopes, not a feature-for-feature equivalence. The service list and Data Agent Kit limitations are from Google’s Data Agent Kit overview; the agent-building options are described in Google’s Vertex AI Agent Builder overview and Agents overview.
Choose Data Agent Kit when the work starts with data
Data Agent Kit is a strong candidate when your team wants to work with Google Cloud data inside its existing IDE or coding-agent workflow. Consider it when the central task is to discover available data, ask questions about it, analyze it with SQL or Python, or develop data pipelines and related ML workloads.
Its workflow is broader than a query editor
The documented sequence can begin with data discovery and exploration, continue with natural-language questions, and then move into SQL or Python analysis. The same surface is described for pipeline development and deployment and for AI/ML work. That makes it relevant to a practitioner who needs to move between understanding data, testing an analysis, and turning the result into a repeatable workload without leaving the development environment.

Agentic skills in the Data Agent Kit description do not change its center of gravity. They indicate that data workflows can include agent-like assistance; they do not establish that the kit is a replacement for a production agent platform with runtime, governance, evaluation, and observability features.
Check service coverage and authentication first
Google lists BigQuery, Dataflow, Managed Service for Apache Spark, Managed Service for Apache Airflow, Knowledge Catalog, AlloyDB, Bigtable, Cloud SQL, Spanner, and Cloud Storage among the services supported by Data Agent Kit. A listed service does not by itself establish that every operation or authentication method your project needs is available. Validate the specific service and access path against the overview and the Data Agent Kit documentation.
The overview calls out database authentication limitations for AlloyDB and Cloud SQL. Treat that as an implementation checkpoint: verify how your users and tooling will authenticate to the particular database before choosing the kit as the basis of a workflow. Do this early, because a convenient IDE experience cannot compensate for an access method your environment cannot use.
Account for the pipeline deployment constraint
Automated deployment of orchestration pipelines works only with GitHub Actions, according to Google’s overview. If your release process depends on another CI/CD system, that is a meaningful fit question. Determine whether the documented deployment route fits your team’s process before building a pipeline workflow around the kit. You may still use the kit for exploration or development, but the deployment boundary needs an explicit plan.
When Data Agent Kit is the wrong starting point
Do not select it merely because a project uses the word “agent.” If the primary deliverable is a conversational or task-performing agent that needs managed sessions, memory, governance, evaluation, and production observability, start by assessing the Agent Platform paths. Data Agent Kit can remain relevant for the data access and analysis portion, but the agent lifecycle is a separate requirement.
Choose an agent-building path when the agent is the product
Use the agent platform route when you are building an AI agent as an application: one that uses tools, performs actions or automates a process, and needs a managed operating environment or lifecycle controls. The right development style depends on how much control your team needs and how much infrastructure it wants Google’s platform to manage.
Use low-code development when speed and guided construction matter
Google’s Agent Platform documentation describes Agent Studio as a low-code path. It is the relevant option to investigate when your team wants a platform-led way to build an agent rather than implementing every part of the development flow in custom code. Confirm that the available controls, integrations, and governance mechanisms match the application’s requirements before committing to a low-code design.

Use ADK or managed APIs when code and platform services need to coexist
Google describes custom-code ADK and managed agent APIs. These paths are useful to evaluate when developers need to define agent behavior in code while relying on platform services for some parts of development or operation. Compare the degree of control over logic and tools with the amount of managed runtime functionality the project needs. The Vertex AI overview also names open-source frameworks as an option, so a team should identify the framework boundary and the Google-managed services it plans to use.
Plan the tools the agent will call
The Vertex AI Agent Builder overview names search, code execution, retrieval, cloud integrations, and MCP. Treat that list as a planning prompt: document which tools the agent must call, what data each tool can reach, and which actions are read-only or state-changing. The documentation establishes that these tool categories are available in the product description, but it does not guarantee that every connector, permission model, or operation is identical across environments. Validate the exact integration and security behavior for the tools you select.
Include lifecycle requirements in the design
For production-oriented projects, development is only one part of the decision. Assess runtime and deployment needs, session handling, memory, governance, evaluation, and observability. Google’s Agent Platform documentation names these as platform capabilities. Write down the required behavior for each one: how sessions should persist, whether memory is needed, who can administer the agent, how quality will be measured, and what operational signals must be monitored. Then verify the specific configuration and suitability in the relevant documentation.
How to decide for a project that needs both
A data-grounded agent project can involve both kinds of capability: a workflow for accessing and analyzing Google Cloud data, and an agent application that uses tools and requires an operating lifecycle. Treat those as separate design questions rather than searching for one product to cover every layer.

If it is a repeatable data or pipeline workflow, evaluate Data Agent Kit first. If it is an agent application, evaluate the Agent Platform development paths.
- List the required data services and operations. Compare each service and authentication route with Data Agent Kit’s documented support; do not infer support for an unlisted operation from a service name alone.
- Map the agent’s lifecycle needs. Decide whether you need low-code construction, custom code, managed APIs or runtime, sessions, memory, governance, evaluation, and observability.
- Separate data permissions from agent permissions. Identify which identity accesses each data service and which identity runs the agent. The documented database authentication limitations for AlloyDB and Cloud SQL make this separation especially important.
- Trace the integration boundary. Specify how the agent will access data and how data workflows will be triggered or maintained. The cited product descriptions do not establish automatic interoperability, so confirm any needed integration separately.
- Test deployment against your operating process. For Data Agent Kit orchestration pipelines, account for the GitHub Actions-only automated deployment route. For an agent platform path, confirm that its runtime and operational controls meet your release and oversight requirements.
- Define acceptance tests. For a data workflow, test discovery, query, analysis, and pipeline behavior against the required services. For an agent, test tool use, session behavior, memory, evaluation criteria, and monitoring signals. Keep the test plan tied to the chosen product surface.
This method avoids choosing based on the word “agent” alone. Data Agent Kit includes agentic skills, but its stated focus is data work; the Agent Platform’s stated focus is building and operating AI agents.
Practical fit examples
Data exploration and pipeline engineering
A data engineer who needs to locate assets, ask natural-language questions, write SQL and Python, and develop a Dataflow or Airflow-related pipeline should begin with Data Agent Kit. The IDE extension and coding-agent plugin align with that workflow. The engineer still needs to verify service support, authentication, and the GitHub Actions condition for automated orchestration deployment.
A customer-service or operations agent
A team building an agent that searches information, executes code or retrieval steps, calls cloud integrations, and must run as a managed application should begin with the Agent Platform options. The team can compare Agent Studio, ADK, managed APIs, and the runtime and governance features according to its control and operations requirements.

An agent grounded in BigQuery data
This is an overlapping case, not a reason to assume one-click integration. Data Agent Kit may help practitioners discover and analyze BigQuery data, while an Agent Platform implementation may provide the agent’s tools, runtime, sessions, governance, evaluation, and observability. Specify the interface between those layers, the identity used to access data, and the deployment process before selecting both.

Cost, governance, and procurement questions
The cited Google pages do not provide a quantitative, apples-to-apples cost comparison between Data Agent Kit and Vertex AI Agent Builder or Agent Platform. Do not claim that one is inherently cheaper. Instead, ask what components your design will actually use and verify current Google Cloud pricing and licensing terms for those components.
Cost planning should include the selected development and runtime services, data processing and storage, tool calls, and any operational infrastructure required by your architecture. The products have different scopes, so comparing a data-workflow surface with a complete managed agent lifecycle can produce a misleading total unless the same workload and operating assumptions are used.
Governance is likewise a requirement to map, not a marketing checkbox. For Data Agent Kit, confirm data-service access and database authentication. For the Agent Platform, document administrative ownership, runtime controls, sessions, memory, evaluation, and observability. If your organization has a required review or monitoring process, verify that the chosen product surface supports it before implementation.
Common pitfalls
- Comparing names instead of outcomes: both surfaces use “agent” language, but one is centered on data workflows and the other on agent applications and their lifecycle.
- Assuming a listed service means every operation is supported: validate the precise service, operation, and authentication path.
- Ignoring the GitHub Actions limitation: automated orchestration-pipeline deployment through Data Agent Kit is documented only with GitHub Actions.
- Overlooking database authentication: the overview specifically identifies limitations for AlloyDB and Cloud SQL.
- Assuming automatic interoperability: the product descriptions do not promise that Data Agent Kit and the Agent Platform invoke or manage each other automatically.
- Using an old product label without a date: Google’s agent products and documentation surfaces have evolved, so record the exact page and capability being evaluated.
- Skipping lifecycle planning: an impressive prototype still needs a decision about runtime, sessions, memory, governance, evaluation, and observability if it will be operated in production.
Understand Google’s changing product names
“Vertex AI Agent Builder” does not refer to a single unchanging product boundary across Google’s documentation. Google’s page titled What is AI Applications? says the original Vertex AI Agent Builder product was renamed AI Applications and that the product functionality and endpoints remained the same at the time that page was written. Newer Google documentation describes Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform as an evolution of Vertex AI, while a Vertex AI Agent Builder documentation collection remains available.

What the comparison does not establish
The cited Google pages establish product descriptions and named capabilities, not a complete apples-to-apples evaluation of cost, performance, regional availability, or every integration detail. They also do not provide a quantitative benchmark that would show one option is faster or cheaper for a particular workload. Base the choice on the documented use case, then verify current implementation details for your Google Cloud environment and chosen product surface.
