Google AI tools are a collection of specialized ways to work, not one chatbot with a different name in each window. I’d choose among them by the task and how much autonomy I want: use Google AI Studio to experiment with models and prompts, Gemini Code Assist for help beside code in an IDE, Firebase Studio for browser-based prototyping, Gemini CLI for terminal-based work, and Jules for well-defined GitHub changes that can run unattended and return for review. The Gemini app is another part of the ecosystem, but the useful starting point for building is to match the tool to the work rather than expect one interface to do everything.

Why are there several Google AI tools for builders?

Because building software involves different kinds of work. Exploring whether a model can handle a task is not the same as writing code inside a project, setting up a prototype, or asking an agent to make a bounded change to a repository. Google’s developer-tool guidance treats its offerings as complementary and recommends choosing by task and workflow.

That distinction changed how I’d plan a build. Instead of asking, “Which Google AI tool is best?” I’d ask: “Where am I working, what do I need done, and how much should the tool do without me?” A chat-style interaction suits exploration; assistance embedded in an IDE keeps coding help close to the project; a terminal fits portable, command-oriented work; and delegated repository work is useful when the task can be specified clearly enough to review afterward.

This is a workflow map, not a claim that every tool has to appear in every project. A small experiment might start and end in AI Studio. A larger effort could move through several tools as the work changes. Richard Seroter, Google Cloud’s Chief Evangelist, made the same central point in Google Cloud’s August 20, 2025 guidance: “It’s important to see these tools as complementary, and you’ll likely use a mix to accomplish your tasks.”

Which Google AI tool should I use?

Start with the kind of work in front of you. The table summarizes the roles in Google Cloud’s guidance; it is not a ranking of quality or a promise that every capability is available under the same terms.

Tool Where it runs Best fit Working style
Google AI Studio Browser Trying models, prompts, grounding, media features, Live API, and lightweight app work Experiment and refine with direct feedback
Gemini Code Assist VS Code or JetBrains IDE Code completion, explanation, generation, tests, custom commands, and agentic coding Supervised assistance alongside the code
Firebase Studio Browser-based managed development environment Prototyping and vibe coding from templates in a customizable VM Build in a managed environment
Gemini CLI Terminal; also usable through integrations such as GitHub Actions Portable interactive work, tool use, MCP support, and asynchronous repository tasks Interactive or delegated, depending on the task
Jules GitHub-oriented workflow Clearly specified repository changes such as documentation, test coverage, or surgical modernization Unattended batch work that returns changes and a pull request for review

The interaction model is a useful second filter. Google’s guidance describes a spectrum from collaborative work, through supervised assistance, to delegated execution. If I need to keep steering and revising, I want an interactive or IDE-based workflow. If I can describe a bounded change and judge the result afterward, delegation may make sense. A vague instruction is a poor fit for unattended work, regardless of how capable the tool may be.

How do I start building with Google AI?

Start with a small, concrete outcome, then move to a more project-shaped workflow only when the work requires it. For example, a builder exploring an idea can first test whether a model follows a useful prompt, then decide whether the next step is an API-backed prototype, IDE work, or a repository change.

  1. Define the job. Write down the input, the output you want, and what would count as a useful result. “Explore whether a model can classify these examples” is a more testable first task than “build my product.”
  2. Experiment in Google AI Studio. Try Gemini or Gemma models, compare prompt approaches, and explore tools such as Google Search grounding or media generation if they fit the problem. Keep the experiment focused on a question you can evaluate.
  3. Choose a build environment. For coding help in an existing project, use Gemini Code Assist in VS Code or JetBrains. For a managed, browser-based prototype, consider Firebase Studio. These are different ways to work, not interchangeable versions of the same workspace.
  4. Keep implementation supervised while the task is still changing. Use the IDE or terminal interactively when you are still discovering requirements, diagnosing behavior, or deciding among approaches. Review generated work as part of normal development rather than treating output as automatically correct.
  5. Delegate only bounded work. Once the desired change is specific and reviewable, consider Gemini CLI for terminal-based or asynchronous work, or Jules for a clearly scoped GitHub task. Read the resulting changes and pull request before accepting them.

This sequence is a practical way to move from uncertainty to implementation, not a required product pipeline. It is reasonable to skip stages: if the task is already a well-defined documentation change in a GitHub repository, a prompt experiment may add no value. If an early model experiment does not answer the product question, moving into a managed environment will not fix that uncertainty by itself.

What can I do in Google AI Studio?

Think of Google AI Studio as an experimentation bench: it is for learning what a model and prompt can do before committing to a more involved build. Google’s developer guidance describes experimenting with Gemini and Gemma, comparing prompts, using tools and Google Search grounding, generating media, trying the Live API, and obtaining API keys for programmatic calls.

From rough idea to repeatable prototype

A productive experiment has a narrow question. I might begin with a rough instruction, compare how alternative prompts handle the same kind of input, and refine the approach until I have a behavior worth testing in an application. That gives the next stage a clearer target than an untested prompt copied into a codebase.

Different features answer different questions. Grounding is relevant when the task calls for information connected to Google Search; media generation and the Live API are paths to explore when the product idea depends on those capabilities. They should not be added simply because they are available. The experiment should tell me whether a feature belongs in the design.

AI Studio can also bridge exploration and code: its guidance includes obtaining API keys for programmatic calls and doing lightweight app work. That does not make it the same thing as a full managed development environment or an IDE extension. It is most useful when the central question is still about model behavior, prompts, or a lightweight prototype.

What is different about Gemini Code Assist in an IDE?

Gemini Code Assist brings AI assistance into VS Code and JetBrains, where the builder is already working with code. Google describes capabilities including code completion, explanation, generation, test generation, custom commands, tools, and an agent mode powered by Gemini CLI.

The practical difference is context and cadence: I can ask for help while reading or changing code rather than switching to a separate chat as the primary workspace. That makes the IDE a natural choice when the task is tied to an existing project or when I want to inspect suggestions as part of the coding process. Completion and explanation can support small decisions; test generation or agent mode addresses larger coding tasks, but still calls for review.

This is not the same autonomy model as handing a task to run unattended. IDE assistance is a fit when I expect to stay close to the implementation, check the result, and adjust the request as I learn more. The fact that agent mode is powered by Gemini CLI does not erase the distinction between working inside an IDE and choosing the terminal as the main interface.

When does Firebase Studio make sense?

Firebase Studio is the browser-based route for building in a Google-managed development environment. Google Cloud describes a setup with templates and a customizable VM, intended to support prototyping and vibe coding, including a path for people who are not full-time developers.

The appeal is convenience: a builder can work in a managed environment rather than first assembling a local toolchain. That can be useful when the goal is to get a prototype moving or explore an idea without making local setup the first project. It is a different proposition from bringing AI assistance into an IDE that is already part of a developer’s local workflow.

The tradeoff is control. A managed browser environment is not automatically the right home for every long-term project or every preferred local setup. Choose it when the supplied environment and prototyping workflow fit the task; choose a local IDE or terminal workflow when that is where you need to work. The published product guidance does not establish that one environment replaces the other for all projects.

When should I use Gemini CLI or Jules?

Use Gemini CLI when the terminal is a useful home for the task or when you want portable interactive or delegated work. Choose Jules when the work is a clearly specified change against GitHub source that can run unattended and be reviewed afterward.

Gemini CLI: terminal-based and portable

Google calls Gemini CLI open, fast, and flexible, and describes built-in tools, MCP support, integration into other products, and GitHub Actions for asynchronous repository work. That makes it a fit for builders who prefer terminal interaction or need to connect AI work to a broader tool-based workflow. It can be used interactively, so using the CLI does not automatically mean handing off control.

Jules: delegate a bounded repository change

Jules is aimed at a different handoff: provide a clear task against GitHub source, let it perform batch work unattended, then examine the returned changes and pull request. Google’s examples include documentation, test coverage, and surgical code modernization. The key condition is that the work can be described precisely enough to assess when it comes back.

For example, “add tests for this clearly identified behavior” is more suitable for delegation than “improve the project.” The first has a boundary and a review question; the second leaves too much discretion about scope. A pull request gives a review point, not a guarantee that the proposed changes are correct or ready to merge.

Can I use several Google AI tools together?

Yes. The tools can serve different stages of one workflow, but using more of them is not inherently better. The useful handoff is where the nature of the work changes: explore in AI Studio, implement with IDE assistance or in a managed environment, and delegate a well-scoped repository task only when the change is clear.

For a concrete example, imagine testing an idea for a small app. I could use AI Studio to compare prompts and explore whether grounding matters; move to Firebase Studio for a quick browser-based prototype, or to an IDE if I am working in an established codebase; then use Gemini CLI for terminal-oriented work. If a discrete documentation or test task is later clear enough to run unattended, Jules is another option. This is a menu of possible handoffs, not a claim that these products automatically share project state or that the output of one transfers seamlessly to another.

At each handoff, carry over the information the next stage needs: what the feature should do, the behavior already explored, and how you will judge success. Keep the experiment’s result distinct from the implementation decision. A prompt that looks promising in an experiment still needs to be evaluated in the context of the application being built.

  • Where do I want to work? Browser, IDE, terminal, or GitHub are meaningfully different environments.
  • How much supervision does this task need? Stay interactive while requirements are moving; delegate only when the task and review criteria are clear.
  • Is this exploration or implementation? Model and prompt experiments belong naturally in AI Studio; code assistance belongs naturally beside code in an IDE.
  • Do I need a managed prototype environment? Firebase Studio is described as browser-based and managed; that convenience may or may not fit a project requiring a different setup.
  • Have I checked current product terms? Verify access, availability, and pricing directly with Google before planning around a particular tier or preview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Google AI Studio only for Gemini models?

No. Google Cloud’s tool guidance says AI Studio lets builders try both Gemini and Gemma models. Which models and capabilities are currently accessible can depend on Google’s changing product terms.

Can Jules merge a pull request automatically?

The cited Google Cloud guidance describes Jules as returning changes and a pull request for review; it does not establish automatic merging as part of that workflow. Treat review and the decision to merge as separate from the delegated work.

Does Firebase Studio require me to be a full-time developer?

Google describes Firebase Studio as a managed browser-based environment with a path to building software without being a full-time developer. That is not a promise that every project or task requires no technical knowledge.
