There is no generally available Google API that exports the exact answer object shown in consumer AI Overviews or AI Mode as JSON. Google documents those features as Search experiences, not as a public response format. If you need a current, web-grounded answer in a predictable JSON shape, the supported approach is to call the Gemini API with its Google Search tool, request structured output with a JSON Schema, then parse and validate the result. That produces a Gemini response, not a byte-for-byte copy of the Search page. Custom Search JSON API can return search results, while Vertex AI Search can generate answers over content you configure; neither is an export of the consumer AI Overview payload.

Can I get Google AI Overviews as JSON?

No. Google’s public Search documentation does not identify a generally available endpoint that returns the exact consumer AI Overview answer, its internal citations, layout, or model metadata as a JSON object. AI Overviews are generated inside Google Search when Google’s systems decide an overview adds value to the ordinary results page, so the visible answer is a Search experience rather than a documented API contract.

You can still build an application that produces a similar kind of current, sourced answer. The practical pattern is to use Gemini’s structured-output feature together with the Google Search grounding tool. Your application defines the fields it needs, asks Gemini to answer using current web sources, receives JSON text, and validates both the syntax and the meaning of each field. The result is generated by Gemini through an API request; it should not be represented as the original Search UI response.

What Google does publish about the Search experiences

Google Search Central describes AI Overviews as a way to get the gist of complicated topics with links for further exploration. AI Mode is intended for nuanced questions, follow-up exploration, reasoning, and comparisons. The two experiences may use different models and techniques. Either can fan a question out into related searches and data sources before composing an answer.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Because Google can change when and how an overview appears, scraping the rendered page is not a stable substitute for an API. A scraper also has to cope with personalization, geography, experiments, consent screens, changing markup, and answers that are not shown for every query. None of those page details is a documented JSON interface.

Is there an API for Google AI Mode answers?

There is no documented public API that returns the exact answer generated in consumer AI Mode. Google presents AI Mode as an interactive Search product with follow-up questions and comparison-oriented reasoning, not as a developer endpoint with a published answer schema.

For an application, separate the requirement into two possibilities:

  • Exact Search payload: no generally available endpoint is documented for exporting it.
  • A fresh answer with web grounding and your own fields: use Gemini structured outputs with the Google Search tool.

This distinction matters for testing and compliance. You can reproduce the workflow—search the web, synthesize an answer, return citations or source URLs in fields you define—but you cannot claim that the generated object is the same model response, ranking, citation set, or wording a user sees in AI Mode.

How do I force Gemini to return web-grounded JSON?

Use a schema-first request: enable Google Search as a built-in tool, ask for current web-grounded information, set the response MIME type to application/json, and provide a schema for the object you want. Then parse the returned text and validate it in your own code. “Force” means constraining the output format; it does not guarantee that every factual value is correct.

1. Design the output contract

Start with fields that your application can verify and use. For example, an answer service might require a prose answer and an array of source URLs:

{"type":"object","properties":{"answer":{"type":"string"},"sources":{"type":"array","items":{"type":"string"}}},"required":["answer","sources"],"additionalProperties":false}

Gemini structured outputs support string, number, integer, boolean, object, array, and null types. Schema properties can include required, enum, and additionalProperties, but not every JSON Schema keyword is supported. Keep the schema within the subset documented for the Gemini API instead of assuming that a validator’s entire JSON Schema implementation will work.

2. Add the Google Search grounding tool

Google’s built-in Search tool runs as part of the API request. Gemini uses the tool results to compose the final answer, rather than your application having to implement a separate crawl-and-rank pipeline. Ask explicitly for current information and instruct the model to populate every required field from the grounded answer.

A minimal conceptual request has this shape:

{"model":"<supported Gemini model>","input":"Answer the question using current web sources.","tools":[{"type":"google_search"}],"response_format":{"type":"text","mime_type":"application/json","schema":{"type":"object","properties":{"answer":{"type":"string"},"sources":{"type":"array","items":{"type":"string"}}},"required":["answer","sources"]}}}

This is a conceptual shape, not a promise that one fixed model name, SDK method, or endpoint will remain unchanged. Treat the model and API surface as deployment-time configuration because supported models and interfaces change.

3. State freshness and evidence rules in the prompt

Tell the model what “current” means for your use case, which geography or date matters, and how to represent uncertainty. Require source URLs for claims that need checking, and define what to do when the tool cannot establish a value—for example, return null or an explicit status rather than inventing one. A schema controls structure; these instructions control how the answer handles missing or conflicting evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Parse the returned text as JSON

Structured output is returned as text with a JSON MIME type. Your client should decode the text with a standard JSON parser, reject malformed responses, and record the request identifier and model version for troubleshooting. Do not extract fields with regular expressions or assume that a successful HTTP status means the object is usable.

5. Validate syntax and meaning

Run a JSON Schema validator, then apply semantic checks that the schema cannot express. Examples include verifying that every URL uses an allowed scheme, that a date is plausible for the requested period, that an enum value is permitted for the business rule, and that required source fields are present when the answer makes a factual claim. Google recommends robust validation and error handling because syntactically valid JSON can still contain semantically incorrect values.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

6. Handle failure branches

  • Tool or network failure: retry according to your service’s limits, then return a typed error rather than an empty answer object.
  • Schema failure: log the raw response securely, retry with a simpler schema if appropriate, and do not silently coerce missing required values.
  • Weak or conflicting sources: expose an uncertainty field or a “not established” state and show the sources that caused the conflict.
  • Stale information: include retrieval time in your own envelope and rerun the request when your freshness policy expires.

What is the difference between Gemini structured output and an AI Overview export?

Gemini gives you control over the JSON contract; an AI Overview export would give you Google Search’s own consumer answer object. The former is documented as an API workflow, while the latter is not documented as a public interface.

Option What you receive Freshness or grounding Schema control Access and lifecycle
Gemini API with structured output and Google Search A Gemini-generated answer in the schema you provide, not the exact Search UI payload Google Search grounding is available in the request; freshness depends on the tool results and your prompt Strong control over supported JSON Schema fields Requires a supported Gemini model and API access; model and endpoint availability can change
Custom Search JSON API JSON web or image search results from a configured Programmable Search Engine Returns result links and metadata, not a documented AI answer Controls the result request, not an AI synthesis schema Requires a Programmable Search Engine and API key; Google says the API is closed to new customers and existing customers have until January 1, 2027 to transition to an alternative
Vertex AI Search Managed answer or search-summary workflow over content and search apps you configure Grounded in the configured enterprise or website search index Product-defined answer workflow rather than a consumer Search payload Requires product setup; generative responses must be enabled, and website search may require enterprise features and advanced website indexing
Consumer Google AI Overview or AI Mode An interactive Search experience rendered for eligible users Google decides when to show it and which searches and sources to use No public answer-object schema is documented No generally available export endpoint is documented

The right choice follows from the object you need. Choose Gemini when your application needs a defined JSON contract and current web context. Choose Custom Search only when result retrieval is the requirement and your account is covered by its availability terms. Choose Vertex AI Search when the answer must be generated over a controlled enterprise or website corpus. None should be labeled an AI Overview or AI Mode API.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Custom Search JSON API return AI Overviews?

No. Custom Search JSON API returns web or image search results from a Programmable Search Engine. Its documented REST endpoint is https://www.googleapis.com/customsearch/v1, with parameters such as key and cx. The API documentation does not describe a field containing an AI Overview or AI Mode answer.

That makes it useful for obtaining result links, titles, snippets, and related metadata that your own application can process. It does not provide Google’s consumer synthesis, citation cards, follow-up state, or internal reasoning. If you build a summarizer on top of those results, the summary is your application’s output and should be identified accordingly.

Availability caveat

Google’s current overview says Custom Search JSON API is closed to new customers and that existing customers have until January 1, 2027 to transition to an alternative. Confirm the lifecycle status and your account’s eligibility before committing to it; a previously working key does not establish that new accounts can be created.

When should I use Vertex AI Search instead?

Vertex AI Search is the enterprise-oriented option when answers should be generated over content you configure rather than over the open consumer Search experience. Google Cloud documents search summaries and an answer method for configured unstructured-data or website-search applications.

Plan for the product prerequisites before writing the answer layer:

  • Enable generative responses for the search application.
  • For website search, check whether enterprise features and advanced website indexing are required for the capabilities you plan to use.
  • Define which documents, domains, permissions, and refresh policy the application may use.
  • Decide how your client will represent citations, access failures, and answers that are unsupported by the indexed content.

This is a separate product from consumer AI Overviews and AI Mode. Its value is control over the searchable corpus and an enterprise workflow, not access to the hidden payload behind Google Search’s public interface.

How reliable is web-grounded JSON?

Grounding improves the chance that an answer reflects current web information, but it does not remove the need for application-level checks. Search results can be incomplete, pages can disagree, and a model can still select an unsuitable source or map a fact into the wrong field.

Use a layered validation policy

  1. Transport: confirm the request completed and the tool was available.
  2. Syntax: parse the response as JSON and reject trailing prose or malformed values.
  3. Schema: check required properties, types, arrays, enums, and whether unexpected properties are allowed.
  4. Semantics: test ranges, dates, URL formats, identity fields, and cross-field relationships.
  5. Evidence: require sources for claims that affect users, money, safety, or compliance, and flag answers whose sources are missing or contradictory.
  6. Freshness: store retrieval time and refresh according to the subject’s volatility rather than treating one response as permanent.

Design for uncertainty instead of forcing a guess

Include fields such as confidence, status, or not_established only when your application has a clear policy for them. An enum such as confirmed, uncertain, and not_found is often safer than requiring a value for every question. The model should be allowed to say that a fact is unavailable when the grounded sources do not establish it.

What do publishers need to do for AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google says publishers have no additional technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet. There is no special schema.org markup or new machine-readable file required specifically for these AI features.

Normal Search fundamentals still matter: allow crawling, publish helpful text that is accessible to users and search systems, keep structured data accurate, and fix indexing or snippet eligibility problems. These steps can make a page eligible to be considered, but they do not guarantee an AI Overview, inclusion in AI Mode, a particular citation, or a stable position.

What should an implementation log and test?

A production service should make each generated object auditable without pretending it is a Search export. Record the model configuration, request time, grounding-tool status, schema version, validation result, and source URLs returned to the client. Protect prompts and user data according to your security policy, and avoid logging secrets such as API keys.

Test cases worth automating

  • A straightforward question with several authoritative sources.
  • A query whose answer changes by country, date, or product edition.
  • Conflicting source pages that require an uncertainty state.
  • No-result or inaccessible pages.
  • A response containing valid JSON but an invalid date, URL, enum, or cross-field relationship.
  • A tool timeout, quota error, or model-unavailable response.
  • A schema revision that adds a required field and must remain backward compatible with stored objects.

Compare outputs against expected facts and source requirements, not against the wording or layout of a consumer Search page. The consumer interface can change independently of your API workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which approach should you choose?

Use this decision rule before selecting an integration:

  • You need the exact AI Overview or AI Mode object: there is no documented public export to call.
  • You need current web-grounded answers in a contract your code controls: use Gemini structured outputs with the Google Search tool, then validate.
  • You need raw result links and metadata: Custom Search JSON API may fit existing eligible customers, subject to its transition timeline.
  • You need answers over a managed enterprise or website corpus: evaluate Vertex AI Search and its generative-response and indexing prerequisites.
  • You are publishing content and want eligibility: follow ordinary indexing, crawlability, helpful-content, accessibility, and structured-data practices; no special AI markup is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I scrape the Search page to capture AI Overviews as JSON?

You can technically parse rendered pages, but that is not a stable or documented integration. Markup, eligibility, location, personalization, experiments, and consent flows can change, and an overview may not appear for the same query every time.

How do I include citations in Gemini’s JSON response?

Define a required array for source URLs or source records in your schema and instruct the model to populate it from grounded results. Your client should still verify that the returned links are present, well-formed, and relevant before displaying them.

Can structured output guarantee factual accuracy?

No. Structured output constrains types and shape, not truth. Use Search grounding, source requirements, semantic validation, freshness checks, and an explicit uncertainty path for facts the available pages do not establish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will publisher schema markup make my page appear in AI Mode?

Google does not require a special schema.org vocabulary or AI-specific file for these experiences. Eligibility still depends on ordinary Search requirements, and meeting them does not guarantee inclusion in an overview or AI Mode answer.
