Google AI Overviews and featured snippets are different Search features. An AI Overview is an AI-generated synthesis that may combine information from multiple related searches and present supporting links. A featured snippet is an excerpt selected from one page and displayed before the standard results. Both can send readers to source material, but they differ in how the text is created, when the feature appears, where a click leads, and what publishers can control. Google does not promise a fixed number of AI Overview links or one permanent visual layout, and neither feature can be guaranteed by a site owner.
What is the difference between Google AI Overviews and featured snippets?
The shortest accurate distinction is synthesis versus excerpt. Google Search Central describes AI Overviews as a way to help people get the gist of a complicated topic or question quickly, with links for further exploration. It describes featured snippets as special boxes in which the normal result format is reversed: the descriptive snippet appears first.

An AI Overview is generated for a query when Google’s systems decide that an AI response would add value beyond the usual Search results. Google says the feature can use “query fan-out”: the system runs multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources before assembling the overview. The result is intended as a starting explanation, with links that let the reader investigate supporting pages.
That process means the wording is not a quotation from one page. It is a generated explanation based on information Google selected for the query. The set of links and the exact presentation can vary; Google’s documentation does not promise a universal source count or a single layout for every search.

Featured snippets elevate an excerpt
A featured snippet is a prominent excerpt taken from a source page and placed ahead of the regular result format. The excerpt can be a paragraph, list, table or another format Google considers a good fit for the query. A featured snippet can also appear inside a People Also Ask or related-questions group.
The text is still presented as a description of the page, not as an AI-written synthesis across several sources. Selecting the result generally takes the reader to the source page and, when the browser and Google’s section-targeting system support it, automatically scrolls to the passage represented by the excerpt.
How do the citation and source links differ?
| Dimension | AI Overviews | Featured snippets |
|---|---|---|
| Content form | AI-generated overview intended to explain a complex question | Descriptive excerpt from a source page |
| How it is selected | Appears when Google’s systems judge that an AI response adds value beyond classic Search | Google’s systems select a page excerpt that fits the query |
| How sources are used | May draw on multiple related searches, subtopics and data sources, then show supporting links | Represents the page from which the displayed excerpt was taken |
| Typical click role | Links provide a jumping-off point for exploring supporting pages | The result opens the represented source page, often at the excerpt’s section |
| When it appears | Conditional; it does not trigger for every query | Algorithmic; Google decides whether an excerpt is a good match |
| Publisher control | Existing controls such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex can limit information shown in AI features |
nosnippet blocks snippets; max-snippet can reduce the chance of a featured snippet but does not guarantee removal |
| Special SEO markup | None. Google says standard SEO fundamentals apply and no special AI Overview schema is required | None. Google provides no direct featured-snippet markup or opt-in control |
“Citation” therefore means something slightly different in practice. In an AI Overview, a visible link supports part of a generated explanation and invites more research. In a featured snippet, the source page is the item being represented by the excerpt. Neither description supports the claim that only AI Overviews cite sources, or that featured snippets have no source.
Do AI Overviews cite sources?
Yes. Google says AI features surface links so people can explore and identify supporting pages. Those links are part of the feature’s purpose, but they are not a promise that every overview will show the same number of links or that every sentence will map to one clearly labeled page.
Why the source list can be broader than one result
Query fan-out allows Google to break a complicated question into related searches. An overview may therefore draw on pages relevant to different subtopics rather than selecting one page and reproducing its wording. This is useful when a question has several components, but readers should open the linked pages when the decision is important, technical, financial or safety-related.
What makes a page eligible
Google’s AI-features guidance says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet. Those conditions make a page eligible for consideration; they do not guarantee that Google will crawl it, include it in an overview or serve the feature for a particular query. Standard Search eligibility and helpful, accessible content remain the foundation.

What Google does not promise
- A fixed number of source links in every AI Overview.
- A stable visual arrangement for every query, device or Search experience.
- That a page meeting eligibility requirements will be shown in an overview.
- A quantified improvement in traffic or click-through rate. Google’s documentation mentions higher-quality clicks in which users are more likely to spend more time on a site, but the cited page gives no figure, sample or study details.
How does a featured snippet work?
Google’s systems choose an excerpt they consider a useful match for the query and place it before the normal result presentation. The site owner cannot mark a page as a featured snippet or force Google to select a particular passage.
The excerpt is generated from page content
Google’s separate guidance on ordinary snippets says Search primarily creates snippet text from the content on the page. It adapts that text to the query and may use the meta description when Google considers it a better description. A featured snippet follows the same broad idea of presenting a page description, but receives a more prominent position and format.
The click can target the quoted section
When section targeting and the reader’s browser support it, clicking a featured snippet takes the visitor directly to the part of the page represented by the excerpt. If that targeting is unavailable, the page can open at its top instead. The behavior is controlled by Google and the browser, not by a special publisher setting.
Featured snippets can appear in question groups
Google notes that a featured snippet may also appear in a People Also Ask or related-questions group. That placement does not turn the excerpt into an AI Overview; it remains a page-based description selected for a particular question.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why can the two formats summarize the same topic differently?
The formats answer different jobs. An AI Overview is built to give a quick orientation to a complicated question, potentially combining several subtopics. A featured snippet is built to expose one page’s relevant passage before the ordinary result list.
Generated synthesis versus page language
Because an AI Overview is generated, its wording may connect facts from more than one source and arrange them into a concise explanation. A featured snippet preserves the role of the source page: it is an excerpt or page description selected for relevance, not a cross-page synthesis. Readers who need the author’s full context should open the page behind the featured snippet rather than treating the excerpt as the entire article.

Different answers to the same query are not automatically an error
Search can show an AI Overview only when Google’s systems judge it useful, while a featured snippet can be selected independently for a page excerpt. The two features therefore do not have to appear together, use the same wording or point to the same page. Their selection systems answer different presentation needs.
Can publishers opt out of AI Overviews or featured snippets?
Publishers have controls that limit snippets and machine-readable page content, but no command that guarantees a preferred appearance in either feature. The effect depends on which control is used and which Search feature is being limited.

Controls that affect AI features
Google says the existing Search controls nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex apply to limiting information shown in AI features.
nosnippet: prevents Google from showing a snippet for the page.data-nosnippet: marks selected page text so it is not used as snippet content.max-snippet: sets a maximum snippet length; a shorter limit can reduce what is available for display.noindex: keeps the page out of Google’s index, which also removes it from normal indexed Search eligibility.
These are information-display and indexing controls, not ways to request inclusion. Using a restrictive directive can reduce a page’s visibility in ordinary Search as well as in AI features, so apply it only when withholding the text is more important than receiving Search exposure.
Controls that affect featured snippets
nosnippet blocks snippets generally. Google’s guidance says max-snippet can make a featured snippet less likely, but it is not a guarantee that the page will never be selected. Google does not provide an exact minimum excerpt length that guarantees a page will or will not qualify.
What publishers cannot do
- There is no special AI Overview schema that guarantees inclusion.
- There is no featured-snippet markup that lets a publisher nominate a passage.
- Indexing a page does not guarantee crawling, serving, an AI citation or a featured-snippet placement.
What should a publisher do to earn visibility in either format?
The practical approach is to make the page eligible and useful, then treat both features as algorithmic outcomes rather than placements that can be purchased or configured.

For AI Overview eligibility
- Keep the page indexable when you want it considered. A page must be indexed and eligible for a normal Search snippet before it can be eligible for Google’s AI features.
- Use ordinary SEO fundamentals. Google says there are no additional technical requirements or special schema.org fields for AI Overviews. Make the page understandable, crawlable and genuinely useful for the question it addresses.
- Organize complex subjects by subtopic. Query fan-out can involve several related searches, so clear sections help readers and Search systems identify what each part of the page answers.
- Choose snippet controls deliberately. If selected text should not appear in AI features, use the relevant Search directive and accept that restricting snippets can reduce Search visibility.
- Do not promise a citation to yourself or a client. Eligibility is necessary but serving remains unguaranteed.
For featured-snippet eligibility
- Write a direct passage that answers a specific question. Google selects the excerpt algorithmically; there is no submission or markup step.
- Make the surrounding page complete. The featured text is only a description of the source page, and a click may bring a reader to that section for more context.
- Use
nosnippetonly when blocking snippets is intentional. It prevents snippet display, including the featured-snippet format. - Use
max-snippetas a likelihood adjustment, not a switch. A lower limit may reduce selection but cannot guarantee removal.
For ordinary snippets that feed both experiences
Google may generate text from page content and adapt it to each query. A meta description can be used when Google considers it a better description, so write one that accurately reflects the page while keeping important explanatory content in the page itself. This does not force a particular snippet wording, but it gives Google clearer material to evaluate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should a searcher do when an AI Overview or featured snippet appears?
Use the feature as an entry point, then match the click behavior to the type of result.
- For an AI Overview: inspect the supporting links, especially when the answer combines several claims or when the decision has meaningful consequences. The overview is a generated starting point, not a fixed quotation from one source.
- For a featured snippet: open the source page and read beyond the highlighted passage. If automatic scrolling works, the browser may place you at the relevant section; otherwise use the page’s headings or find-in-page search.
- For either format: check the date, context and qualifications on the linked page before relying on a summary for a high-stakes decision.
Common misconceptions about citations and summaries
“Only AI Overviews have sources.”
False. A featured snippet is explicitly an excerpt from a source page, and its result links to that page. AI Overviews add supporting links around a generated synthesis, but both formats can lead readers to source material.
“Every complicated query gets an AI Overview.”
False. Google says AI Overviews appear when its systems determine that the feature adds value beyond classic Search. They do not trigger for every query.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“A publisher can add schema to win a featured snippet.”
False. Google provides no direct featured-snippet markup. Selection is algorithmic, and publishers cannot guarantee that a particular excerpt will be elevated.
“A shorter max-snippet value definitely removes a page.”
False. Google says max-snippet can make featured snippets less likely, not impossible. nosnippet is the control that blocks snippets generally, with the corresponding visibility trade-off.

What is the practical takeaway for readers and publishers?
Read an AI Overview as a generated orientation with supporting links, and read a featured snippet as a prominent excerpt from one page. For readers, that distinction tells you whether to follow several source links or open one page and inspect its surrounding context. For publishers, the same distinction explains why ordinary SEO eligibility matters, why no special AI markup is required, and why neither feature can be promised in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the same page appear in an AI Overview and a featured snippet?
Google describes separate selection systems for the two formats and does not promise that eligibility for one produces the other. A page can therefore be considered independently for each feature, with no guaranteed combination or shared wording.
Why did a featured-snippet click open the top of the page instead of the quoted passage?
Automatic scrolling depends on browser support and Google’s section-targeting behavior. When either is unavailable, the result can open at the page’s top even though the snippet came from a lower section.
Why does Google sometimes show a meta description instead of text from the page?
Google says ordinary snippets are generated primarily from page content, but it may use the meta description when that is a better description for the query. The choice is made per query, so writing a meta description does not lock the displayed wording.
Does Google publish a minimum excerpt length for featured snippets?
No. Google’s featured-snippet guidance does not specify an exact minimum length that guarantees selection or removal. Length limits can influence likelihood, but they are not a deterministic eligibility rule.
