Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries in Search, with links intended to help you explore the underlying information. Treat an overview as a starting point, not as a verified answer: Google warns that AI responses may contain mistakes, and the cited pages still need to be checked against the claim, their dates, and other authoritative sources.
What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are generated snapshots that summarize key information about a search topic or question. Google says they appear when its systems decide generative AI is especially helpful, such as when a question calls for understanding information from a range of sources. They are part of Google Search, not a replacement for the pages they summarize.

The overview can help orient you, surface a few relevant points, and suggest where to read further. But a concise generated summary can leave out qualifications, disagreeing evidence, or details that matter to your specific situation. For that reason, use its links to investigate rather than treating the summary itself as the final authority.
Where do AI Overview citations and source links come from?
Google says AI Overviews use a customized Gemini model alongside Search ranking systems and the Knowledge Graph. Those systems identify relevant, high-quality indexed results to support the generated text; the links let readers visit underlying pages and consider their information and perspectives.
#1 Best Overall
A displayed link is useful evidence of what Google selected as a supporting source, but it is not a guarantee that every sentence in the overview is fully supported by that page. Open the page and check the specific passage, context, and qualifications. A page may provide background on a topic without substantiating the precise wording or scope of a generated claim.
The visual treatment of those links is not fixed. Google product announcements have described prominent source links, site icons on mobile, and experiments with links placed in overview text. Placement can change as Search evolves, so do not assume that every device, query, or region will show citations in the same location or format.
Can you trust an AI Overview?
Use one as a starting point, not as a standalone source of truth. Google’s Search Help guidance explicitly says, “AI responses may include mistakes.” Google has also acknowledged that some overviews were odd or inaccurate, citing issues such as query interpretation, language nuance, or limited high-quality information on the web.

After problems surfaced following the May 2024 launch, Google said it made more than a dozen technical improvements. That is evidence of ongoing product changes, not a promise that a particular overview is accurate or a published accuracy rate. The Google materials described here do not provide a universal accuracy percentage; a single number would not tell you whether the answer to your particular query is reliable.
Google says its core web ranking and safety systems are integrated into AI Overviews. In a May 2025 paper, it said the feature is “built to surface information that is backed up by top web results.” Google also describes a higher bar for reliable supporting information on Your Money or Your Life (YMYL) queries and says users may be prompted to seek expert advice or verify information. These safeguards do not remove the need to check consequential claims yourself.
How do you check whether an AI Overview is accurate?
Check the claim, not just the presence of a link. The most useful review compares the overview’s exact wording with current, authoritative sources and accounts for whether the information applies to your location and circumstances.
- Identify the claim that matters. Separate specific facts, dates, instructions, or recommendations from broad background text. A summary may be broadly helpful while still getting one important detail wrong.
- Open the supporting page. Find the passage that is meant to support the statement. Check whether it actually establishes the same claim, rather than merely discussing the same subject.
- Check the date and context. Look for when the page was published or updated, and whether its advice applies to your country, language, edition, or situation. Older or geographically mismatched information may not answer your question.
- Compare independent authoritative sources. For consequential facts, look for agreement from more than one reliable source. If sources conflict, investigate the difference rather than relying on the overview to resolve it.
- Match the verification effort to the stakes. An ordinary background fact may need a quick check. Health, financial, legal, safety, or other high-impact decisions call for stronger evidence and, where appropriate, advice from a qualified professional.
These checks reflect the key things that determine whether a summary is useful: the quality and authority of its sources, whether those sources support the sentence, recency, geographic fit, independent agreement, and the consequences of being wrong.
How widely are AI Overviews available?
Google’s product page lists AI Overviews in over 120 countries and territories and 11 languages. That describes the stated rollout, not a guarantee that any particular person will see an overview for every search.
The experience can vary by country, language, account, device, and query, and Google updates rollout details over time. Link placement can vary too. If you do not see an overview, that alone does not establish that the feature is unavailable in your region or that something is wrong with your device.

Can you turn Google AI Overviews off?
Google says AI Overviews are a core Search feature and do not have a permanent off switch. If you want a results view without them, use the Web filter in Search, which shows text-based links.
You can also rate an overview or report a problem. Feedback gives Google a way to hear about a result you think is unhelpful or inaccurate, but it does not replace checking a claim before you act on it.

Google Search Central says the usual foundational SEO requirements apply: a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet, must follow Search policies, and should provide helpful, reliable, people-first content. Google says there are no additional technical requirements specific to AI Overviews.
In practice, eligibility is not the same as a guarantee of selection. Google’s description says its systems identify relevant, high-quality indexed results to support generated responses; it does not promise that a particular page will be cited for a given query. Website owners should focus on making their pages discoverable and genuinely useful, rather than looking for a special AI Overview markup or a guaranteed placement.
- Make sure the page can be indexed and is eligible to show a Search snippet.
- Follow Google Search policies.
- Publish useful, reliable content written to serve people.
Those are baseline Search conditions, not a recipe that guarantees a citation. The overview’s sources can vary with the query and with Google’s ranking and quality systems.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a link in an AI Overview mean Google endorses that website?
No. It means Google selected the page as a supporting link for that overview; it is not a blanket endorsement of the publisher or every claim on the page. Judge the particular evidence and its relevance to the statement you are checking.
Why might two people see different AI Overview links?
Google says the Search experience can vary by country, language, account, device, and query, and it can update the product over time. Those factors can affect whether an overview appears and how its links are presented.
Is there an official accuracy score for Google AI Overviews?
The Google materials described here do not publish a universal accuracy percentage. A single score would not establish whether an individual answer is correct, so check the specific claim against current sources.
Can a website guarantee it will be cited in an AI Overview?
Google’s guidance describes baseline Search eligibility and content practices, but it does not promise a citation for any page or query. Selection depends on the systems that choose relevant, high-quality results for the generated response.
