Google AI Mode is built to answer complex, exploratory questions by searching across related subtopics and synthesizing a response with links; traditional Google Search is the conventional results experience. Ads can appear in both contexts, but their placement and formats vary. Google has described ads in AI Overviews and, at different dates, tests of ads within AI Mode. Neither experience guarantees an ad for every query, and Google’s announcements do not establish one fixed layout or availability pattern for every country, device, account, or search.
What is the difference between AI Mode and traditional Google Search?
AI Mode is a more conversational, synthesis-oriented Search experience for questions that may involve several parts, comparisons, reasoning, or follow-ups. Traditional Search is the familiar results experience, where the page presents results for a query. The distinction is not simply “AI versus no AI”: Google has added AI features to the broader Search experience, and the conventional results page can vary by query and rollout.

AI Mode is also not the same thing as an AI Overview. AI Overviews can appear within Search; AI Mode is a separate end-to-end experience. Treating the terms as interchangeable obscures where an answer appears and what Google has said about ads in each setting.
| What you’re comparing | AI Mode | Traditional Google Search |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | Complex, multi-part, exploratory questions, comparisons, and questions likely to lead to follow-ups | Queries entered into the conventional Search results experience; Google’s announcements do not define a single set of query types for it |
| How the response is presented | An AI-powered response that synthesizes information and includes links for further exploration | A results page whose layout can vary; Google does not describe it as a fixed number of blue links |
| How the search is handled | Google says it can break a question into subtopics, run multiple searches concurrently, and use them to form a response | Google’s announcements do not provide a complete technical specification for every conventional results layout |
| Follow-up and refinement | Designed for follow-up questions and continued exploration | Google’s announcements do not specify one universal follow-up flow for conventional Search |
| Ads | Google has described tests and rollouts of ads in AI Mode, with formats that may appear below or within an AI response | Search ads can appear in Search; Google’s announcements do not establish one fixed placement for every results page |
| Availability | Google’s rollout statements are dated and do not establish a complete availability matrix for every country, language, device, account, or query | Availability and page composition can vary; Google’s announcements do not state a complete matrix |
The comparison is between two ways of engaging with Search, not two perfectly fixed page templates. Traditional Search remains the baseline results experience, but it may include AI features such as an AI Overview. Conversely, AI Mode’s synthesized answer can still point outward to websites. The more useful distinction is whether you want Google to organize an answer around a complex question or prefer to start from the conventional results page and choose links yourself.

How does AI Mode turn a question into an answer?
Google describes AI Mode as using “query fan-out”: it breaks a question into related subtopics, issues multiple searches simultaneously, and brings the results together in an AI-powered response. Google Search Product Management Director Robby Stein described this approach in a May 20, 2025 Search Blog post, “AI Mode in Google Search: Updates from Google I/O 2025.”
Stein’s description was: “Under the hood, AI Mode uses our query fan-out technique, breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf.” In practical terms, the interface is intended to take on some of the exploration that otherwise might require a person to search several related phrases individually. A multi-part question or comparison gives the system a broader task than a short keyword query, though Google’s description does not guarantee a particular response for any individual prompt.
For a reader, that means the starting question does not have to be a short keyword phrase. A prompt that asks for a comparison or combines several related needs is the kind of query Google says AI Mode is designed to handle. The synthesized answer is not meant to be a closed endpoint: Google’s May 2026 description of its generative Search experiences emphasized article suggestions, direct links, and previews of linked websites as ways to discover original content.
Those links matter because a synthesis and a visit to an original source are different things. Google’s May 2026 description presents links and previews as part of discovery, giving people a route to continue reading rather than implying that every detail of a topic is contained in the generated response. The announced approach does not promise that every answer will contain the same number of links, the same article suggestions, or a preview for every source.
That description explains Google’s intended product approach, not a guarantee that every AI Mode answer will surface the same sources, number of links, or presentation. Google’s May 2025 and May 2026 product descriptions do not provide a complete specification for how every query is processed or how the experience behaves in every region and on every device.
Where do ads appear in Google AI Mode?
Google has described more than one AI Mode ad approach, at different points in time. In May 2025, it said it was starting to test ads in AI Mode and that, where relevant, they might appear below and integrated into AI Mode responses. In May 2026, Google described two ad formats under test: Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers.

What Google said in May 2025
Google’s May 2025 Ads announcement said that ads might appear below and integrated into AI Mode responses when relevant. It also named Performance Max, Shopping, and Search campaigns with broad match, including AI Max for Search, as eligible for appearances in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Eligibility is not a promise that an ad will be shown for a particular person or query.
For advertisers, “eligible” is therefore a narrower claim than “will appear.” Google’s announcement identified campaign types that could qualify for appearances in those experiences; it did not promise a specific impression, placement, or frequency. A reader comparing a live page with the announcement should not assume that the absence of an ad means the campaign category was ineligible, or that eligibility guarantees an ad beside a particular answer.
What Google described in May 2026
Google described Conversational Discovery ads as a format that answers a person’s specific question, and Highlighted Answers as a format that may appear in a recommendation list. It said both would include an AI explainer alongside advertiser creative and continue to be labeled “Sponsored.” These were formats Google described as under test; the announcement is not evidence that every user currently sees them.
The names indicate different ways an ad could relate to the surrounding AI experience: one is framed around answering a specific question, while the other may be highlighted within a recommendation list. Google’s description does not establish exactly how often either format appears, what every explainer contains, or whether the format is available for every topic or advertiser. The “Sponsored” label is the important signal Google said would remain, rather than an assurance that a user will encounter one of these formats.
Google’s descriptions point to placements that can sit alongside or within an AI-generated experience, rather than one universal position. A reader should look for the ad label on the page in front of them instead of assuming that every sponsored result will occupy the same location.
Are Google Search ads shown inside AI answers?
Sometimes, according to Google’s descriptions, but not as a universal rule. Google said ads in AI Overviews were expanding to desktop in the U.S. in May 2025, and that it planned a later English-language expansion to selected countries. Separately, Google said it was starting to test ads in AI Mode, and in May 2026 described additional AI Mode formats under test.
AI Overviews and AI Mode should be kept distinct here. The May 2025 announcement covered Search and Shopping ads in AI Overviews as well as tests in AI Mode; a statement about one placement does not establish that the same ad format or rollout applies to the other. Google’s later descriptions likewise do not establish that a sponsored item appears on every answer or for every user.
For a particular search, whether an ad appears depends on relevance and the serving context. The May 2025 and May 2026 statements do not supply a query-by-query rule, a complete current country list, or a guarantee that a campaign marked eligible will receive an impression. They also do not establish that ads will be placed in the same position each time a person searches a topic.

That is different from saying every AI answer contains an ad. Check the label and context on the page itself, and treat an individual search as one instance rather than proof of a universal rule.
How do the ad formats differ from ads on the conventional results page?
The clearest documented difference is how Google says ads can be presented around an AI-generated response. In AI Mode, the 2025 description allowed for ads below and integrated into responses, while the 2026 formats were described as conversational answers or highlighted items in a recommendation list, with an AI explainer alongside advertiser creative. Google’s announcements do not provide a full, side-by-side specification of every conventional Search ad format and position.

| Ad context | Google’s dated description | What that does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| AI Overviews | In May 2025, Google said Search and Shopping ads were expanding to desktop in the U.S.; it also described planned later English-language expansion to selected countries. | A dated rollout statement, not a promise of an ad in every Overview or a complete current availability list. |
| AI Mode, initial test description | In May 2025, Google said it was starting to test ads that might appear below and integrated into responses when relevant. | A test description, not a fixed layout or universal user experience. |
| AI Mode, named formats | In May 2026, Google described Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers as formats under test, with an AI explainer alongside advertiser creative and “Sponsored” labeling. | Google’s description of formats under test, not confirmation that all users see them. |
| Traditional Search results | Google’s announcements do not give a complete, universal placement specification for conventional Search ads. | Do not infer a fixed position or compare every conventional layout from these announcements alone. |
This evidence supports a comparison of the AI-related formats Google described, not a claim that all ads on a conventional results page look one particular way. The conventional Search page may vary, and Google’s dated statements do not lay out every position or creative format there. Likewise, an AI-ad format being tested does not establish that it has replaced other Search ad placements.
One reliable comparison point is labeling: Google said the May 2026 formats would continue to be labeled “Sponsored.” Beyond that, placement, wording, and visibility should be read from the actual interface rather than inferred from the format name. Google’s descriptions do not provide evidence for a universal difference in advertiser cost, click-through performance, or conversion results between AI Mode and conventional Search.
What do Google’s rollout statements mean for availability?
They are dated snapshots, not a permanent specification. Google’s May 2025 announcement described AI Mode as rolling out in the U.S. and called it its most powerful AI Search experience at that time. The same month, Google described AI Overview ads expanding to desktop in the U.S. and planned English-language expansion to selected countries. Those statements should not be generalized to every geography, language, device, account, or query in October 2026.
Google’s May 2026 description of ad formats under test adds information about what the company was exploring, but it does not amount to a complete availability chart. If the interface or ad placement differs for you, that difference is not by itself evidence that one of Google’s announcements was false; the announcements leave room for variation by rollout and query.
Dates and scope are especially important when comparing what you see with what Google announced. The May 2025 statement about AI Mode rolling out in the U.S. is a description of that rollout at that time, while the May 2026 statements describe formats under test. Neither one tells a reader precisely which account, device, language, or query will receive a feature today. Google’s announcements do not supply a complete current availability matrix, so avoid treating a test, an expansion plan, or a market-specific rollout as a global launch.
What evidence does Google give about how people use AI Search?
Google reported that Search usage increased by more than 10% for query types that show AI Overviews in the U.S. and India. Google said this result came from an experiment comparing cohorts over time and from internal data covering September 2024 through the end of April 2025. It is a Google-reported experimental result, not an independently audited causal finding, and it concerns query types that show AI Overviews—not a universal measure of AI Mode use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat figure should not be turned into a claim that all Google searches rose by the same amount or that AI Mode alone caused the increase. Google’s stated scope is narrower: query types that show AI Overviews in two countries, based on an experiment and internal data over the specified period. The announcement supports reporting what Google said, but it does not provide an independent comparative test of AI Mode against traditional Search.

In 2026, Google also said that 75% of people reported making faster, more confident decisions using AI Mode in Search. The announcement passage does not provide enough study detail to independently evaluate what was measured or how participants were selected. Attribute the figure to Google rather than treating it as a general population estimate.
The two numbers describe different things and should not be combined into a single performance claim. The 10% figure concerns Search usage for query types that show AI Overviews, with a stated U.S. and India scope and a 2024–2025 measurement period. The 75% figure is Google’s report about people’s perceptions of decisions using AI Mode in 2026. Neither establishes that every user will prefer AI Mode, that an answer is more accurate, or that advertising performs better in one interface.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which experience should you use?
Choose based on the job you want Search to do. AI Mode is a reasonable fit when the question has several connected parts or when you want to explore a comparison through follow-ups. The conventional results experience remains useful when you want to scan results directly and choose where to go. Neither is a guarantee of a particular page layout, source list, or ad presence.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Use AI Mode for a multi-part question, a comparison, or a topic where you expect to refine the question as you learn.
- Use conventional Search when you prefer to review the results page directly and select individual links yourself.
- Check the links and labels in either experience: an AI-generated response can include links, and any sponsored placement should be identified by its on-page ad label.
- Keep the terminology straight: an AI Overview can appear within Search; it is not another name for AI Mode.
A simple way to choose is to start with the shape of the task. If you need a response that connects multiple parts of a question and expect to ask follow-ups, AI Mode matches the exploration-oriented use Google describes. If you want to compare individual pages yourself from a conventional results list, traditional Search is the more direct starting point. That is a choice about interaction, not a claim that one interface always provides better sources or more reliable answers.
In either case, treat the generated answer as a starting point when the details matter: follow the links Google provides and read the source material directly. For ads, distinguish an “eligible” campaign from an actual impression and distinguish an announced or tested format from something guaranteed to appear in your own results. Those habits are useful because Google’s public statements describe product direction and particular rollouts, not every possible live result page.
The practical difference is the starting interaction: AI Mode organizes a search around synthesis and exploration, while traditional Search presents the conventional results experience. Google’s ads announcements show that sponsored content is evolving across both, but they do not support a universal rule about where an ad will appear for a given search.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Google mean by query fan-out in AI Mode?
It means Google says AI Mode can break a question into subtopics and issue multiple related searches at once before assembling a response. Google Search Product Management Director Robby Stein described that method in the May 20, 2025 Search Blog announcement.
Best Value
What did Google measure when it reported a Search usage increase of more than 10%?
Google said it compared cohorts over time and used internal data from September 2024 through the end of April 2025. The reported increase applied to query types that show AI Overviews in the U.S. and India, not all searches or AI Mode alone.
Does Google’s 75% AI Mode figure prove that most people make better decisions?
No. Google reported that 75% of people said they made faster, more confident decisions using AI Mode, but the cited 2026 announcement passage does not provide enough study detail to assess the result independently.
Are AI Overviews and AI Mode the same feature?
No. Google describes AI Overviews as a feature that can appear within Search, while AI Mode is an end-to-end Search experience. An ad announcement about one should not automatically be read as a statement about the other.
Where did Google say AI Mode ads might appear?
In May 2025, Google said it was testing ads that might appear below and integrated into AI Mode responses when relevant. In May 2026, it described Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers as formats under test. Neither statement guarantees that every user or query will show an ad.

Which campaigns did Google identify as eligible for appearances in AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Google’s May 2025 Ads announcement named Performance Max, Shopping, and Search campaigns with broad match, including AI Max for Search. Eligibility means a campaign may qualify; it does not guarantee an impression for a particular query or person.
Does Google’s announcement tell me whether AI Mode or its ads are available in my country or on my device?
Not completely. Google’s May 2025 statements described a U.S. rollout for AI Mode and an AI Overview ads expansion to U.S. desktop, with planned English-language expansion to selected countries. Those dated statements do not establish availability for every country, language, account, device, or query.
Do Google’s announcements show which experience has cheaper or more effective ads?
No. The announcements describe ad eligibility, placements, formats, and some rollout plans, but do not provide a complete comparison of advertiser costs or campaign performance between AI Mode and conventional Search.
Quick Recap
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: AI Mode is Google’s synthesis-oriented experience for complex questions and follow-ups; traditional Search is the conventional results experience, which can also include AI features such as AI Overviews. Google has described ads in AI Overviews and tests of ads in AI Mode, but its dated announcements do not promise a particular ad, placement, or availability for every query or user. Check the links and “Sponsored” labels on the page you see, and treat rollout claims as specific to their stated dates and scope.
